Well, I knocked off 8.6km today on our walk which burned 646 calories. I am on my second rum and Pepsi and the wife is preparing an Italian feast, could life get any better?

TF sorry to hear of your Diverticulitis. We know three people with it, two of them have read, read and read some more on it and live like they don't even have it. The third is the Mother-in-law. She doesn't even want to make the effort, drives my wife crazy. She has been rushed to the hospital many times and had three chunks of her bowel removed in the past few years. Education is always the key.

I feel great with the ramped-up exercise this week. When your wife cooks as well as mine does, I would rather do more than eat less.Laugh

Canucks are on tonight, it's a good day.

Brent, years ago when schools first got websites, there was a lot of worry about showing students online.  We had a lot of parents who said they did not want their kids pictured online, and it was nearly impossible to have any photos on the school websites that had any students at all.

I hear ya John, however, this one video was in our house with lots of clues as to where it was. Both my kids have a big internet presence now. When I Google my son's name the first six pages are all him and if you click on images it is the same result. The daughter has plenty of pics online as she excelled in school on the swim, golf, and equestrian teams, now at University it is Equestrian and Archery. She also plays the piano, cello, and clarinet, though the piano is the only thing I hear these days when she is home. I kept my Moms Yamaha Grand piano and told her it is hers when she gets her own place.

Well I just did 45 minutes on the bike and 10 minutes of weights so it is time to hit the trail with my bud (our only male dog) I love taking off on him when he stops to sniff things, I run as fast as I can and he comes after me once notices I am not there anymore. He catches up and laughs at me because I am going flat out and he just saunters along beside me without breaking a sweat.Grumpy

Couldn't get much guitar playing done today as the arthritis in my hands would not let me. I'll try again later.

All the best to all.

John, how's that for my bad wording?  You'd better get me a donut, too, while I try to rewrite that sentence!

Brent, years ago when schools first got websites, there was a lot of worry about showing students online.  We had a lot of parents who said they did not want their kids pictured online, and it was nearly impossible to have any photos on the school websites that had any students at all.

Then, along came Facebook.  Parents themselves began putting their own kids' photos online.  The photos were liked and shared all over the place.

At school, we finally had a provision in the school handbook that if a parent did not want their child's photo to ever appear in the school's website, they had to fill out a form and submit it to the office.  Since that change happened, not a single parent ever filled it out.

I just got back from the train store.  I decided to go today.  I love that place.  They claim to be have the biggest selection of N and HO between Chicago and Denver.  True or not, they have so much stuff to look at I could have spent all day.

BATMAN

Sorry everyone, I am getting senile in my old age. Try this.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ANKIWnmhUKs?&ab_channel=BATTRAIN1

Another beautiful day in paradise. I'll get the grass cut today but as it is still early here, I think I'll sit down on the back patio with my guitar for a couple or three hours. Johns right, can't beat retirement. I have been retired for 13 years now, packed it in at 52.

Enjoy your day all.

EDIT: Sorry people I had to delete the video as it had 1200 views in the first 40 minutes and was attracting the wrong kind of comments. I will post another down the road and get the visibility setting correct next time. I posted it publicly instead of unlisted and I hope I stopped it from going viral. More to come.

On you tube studio if you click additional settings on the bottom of the first page that sets thumbnails description etc a setting will pop up where you can approve comments or turn them off completely. Maybe that might help.

I had meant to post it as unlisted, that way only the people here would see it and that usually means two or three people. I accidentally hit public and away it went. I just deleted it altogether and the way it was taking off I hope it wasn't snagged and reposted by someone else or it is out there forever.

When my daughter was young we sent a private video to all the Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents of my daughter playing the piano. We asked it not be shared with anyone and of course, someone reposted it to a friend and it hit the WWW forever. The problem was the emblem and name of her school were clearly visible on her sweater in the video. No harm came of it, but that was the last time we sent any videos out of the kids.

I don't mind at all if my MRR videos end up in other places but judging by the views that is unlikely to ever happen.Laugh

I didn't know that trains took vacations.  Would they schedule them with their dispatcher?  How would they do stuff like hotels and rental cars?  And then there's their families.  Oh my, I need another donut!

Good morning, everyone.  It's 68°, sunny, and beautiful outside.  The only way to make it better would be for some rain.

You may recall that David (NorthBrit) suggested that we tack the Diner onto a few vacation trains. I think that sounds like a great idea!

I'm one of the few clowns who actually enjoys seeing other people's vacation photos.

Brent, I also couldn't watch the video.  Message said private.

Kevin, I've never heard of Island Coastal beer.  I see that's it's brewed in South Carolina.  I will have to try and find some -- not sure if it's sold anywhere here.

I'm not sure what I did to deserve this, but I have another day with nothing scheduled.  The grass isn't tall enough to cut, and cleaning the shed can wait.  I went to the grocery store yesterday.  There's nothing to do but work on the bridges for the layout!

I think tomorrow I may drive down to Spring Creek Model Railroad store to buy some more styrene for the bridges.  It's an hour drive with no traffic.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love retirement?

In a couple of weeks there's an auction near here on the estate of a lifelong railroad collector.  It's an amazing collection.  I wish I had more room (and money) to bid on some of the stuff.  Wouldn't this signal look great in the backyard?  Almost all of the stuff is Burlington, with lots of station stuff and lots of signals.

Hi gang!

The end of the month is rapidly approaching so that means that we have to get ready to move the Diner. You may recall that David (NorthBrit) suggested that we tack the Diner onto a few vacation trains. I think that sounds like a great idea!

What say ye?

Cheers!!

Dave

I'll offer a second for vacation trains.  And also offer that those of with roots across the pond and big lake will likely call them "holiday" trains.  If I get confused I'll see if a donut (doughnut?) helps. Smile, Wink & Grin

Good morning

gmpullman

It was fun to see the picture of the past out the back of the Lacrosse Depot Ed.  83 was the year after I graduated high school.  Although right next door, my journey through life wouldn't be taking me there till many years later.

It appears Mark on Flickr perhaps took the picture out of the north side of the building seeing the higher vantage point of the photo.

We went there on a weekend get-away early last spring.  Here's a few pictures of the south side of the building.

Waited for a train as Judy waited for meLaugh  Walked down to wave to the engineer in the Canadian Pacific cab.  Much to my surprise an unmanned train reversing direction to connect to a string of more hopper cars further down the line.

I had seen this sort of thing before at the yard in Savage Minnesota with the locomotive controlled in the yard office.  I don't know where they were controlling these two CP locomotives from.  It left the area after just that one stop picking up the cars while passing through.

It appears your alike van in the picture was from the third generation series.  My guess is 72 - 73, but out of curiosity, what year was your van?

Thanks John.  Looking forward to seeing your bridge progress you mentioned.  I'm glad the pictures were helpful to you.....AnytimeSmile

I hear ya about the rental car rates Lion.  I saw the effect the pandemic had on them last spring.  Last Summer I decided to roll the dice and risk driving the 18 year old Ram on our Mount Rushmore ten day road trip.  I felt if I had to dust off the Visa for a road hazard, it might be cheaper anywayIndifferent  I hope you can get the time off to go see your Brother in North Carolina.

I prefer those vanilla Oreos lately as well Kevin.  I didn't notice lemon on the package rifling through them rather quickly.  I'll have to look next time as maybe I've been eating the wrong onesLaugh

Have a great day gentlemenWink

Lion, you said you will visit your brother this summer. Is that back in NYC? Will you get a chance to ride the subways while you're there?

No. R. lives in North Carolina. Have no brothers in NYC. I am thinking about that for next summer. I'll be 40 years a monk by then and maybe can get more weeks away. May stay at a Catholic retreat house. If my stability does not get worse.

No, I will fly in to RDU and then rent a car for several days. Car rental will cost more than the air fare.

At least when (or if) I go to NYC I will take AMTK to NYP and will have no knead fo a kar!

Just peeled off 7.18km with a mutt. The Garmin says I averaged 7.3kmh. It is a perfect day here to be outside. I didn't see another soul on our walk and it would have been deathly quiet if the birds weren't making such a racket.Laugh

My son took possession of his new place a week or so ago and after the really old guy moved out the walls were full of screws as he had dozens of pictures covering just about every square metre. The kid was trying to get painters in, but the wait was so long that the wife and I jumped in a did it for him. It is a beautiful high-end joint with beautiful crown molding and a completely renovated kitchen and bathrooms. It was a lot of work, especially the finicky crown molding. I also ripped out the blinds and drapes and we installed new ones in the whole place. The wife managed to find those really quickly. I just have to do a few odds and ends and we are done. I detest painting to the point I hire painters to paint my own house and I hate other people working on my house, the things we do for our kids.Laugh It will all be a housewarming gift for him and his GF.

My son and his GF stayed with us for several nights while the wife and I worked on their place and it was a really hectic couple of weeks for my son as they had a big convention on and he is the big boss. The kid came home exhausted every night and we drank rum and watched hockey and talked for hours, it was great. The wife cooked some amazing feast some nights after painting all day and a couple of nights we ordered in.

I am up three pounds with all the good grub and rum so today was de-gooing day #1. I was on the bike for an hour, lifted weights and went for the walk. The Garmin says I burned 1683 calories doing those activities. That's good for half a pound, by the end of next week I'll have lost the rest.Yes

Just waiting for a call from the U.S. Bank. I am still getting bills for a safety deposit box in Seattle for the lady whose Estate I am working on. They closed her accounts a year ago but they are saying they will be deducting the annual fee for the box from her account. The bank manager says her death certificate and copy of the will are right in front of her and the accounts are closed yet they keep sending a bill. IDIOTS!

All the best to all.

I just use my half-inch drill with a ship auger to drill it out and a new post slides right in, no digging.

I wanted to be able to pry it out.  Unfortunately, the post had broken down in the concrete.  I thought about drilling and chipping it out of the square hole in the concrete, but I decided that I would just dig the whole thing out.

I should have done what you did.

I had a few posts that were just mush down in the hole and I just scooped the goop out with my hand. Up to my armpit doing that.Laugh Didn't take long though.

A couple of times I drilled down the centre and easily pulled the post out by pulling up on the drill. It will either pull right up or I'll get a fallers wedge and do a couple of taps on each side and that is all it takes to break the post away from the cement.

I might add I bought a cheapo ship auger bit for that job. A good one is too pricey to use in that situation.

If it wasn't for the dogs, we would not have any fences. The neighbours are far enough away that we don't worry about staking our exact territory out. In addition to the 1-acre dog run, we have a second for when the girls are in season and need to be kept away from the lads. It is only 40' x 100'.

Living fences are more attractive.

But they don't keep herds of animals in. Our dogs have about an acre fenced in as their dog run.

I couldn't throw them away, so I now have a bunch of hammers in my shed.

I won't even guess how many hammers I actually own. Six are hanging on the garage wall and four more are in one of the drawers in those gray toolboxes.

York1
I was told (rightly or wrongly) that tile outdoors or in unheated garages is a hit or miss.  Evidently the tiles don't do well in below zero up to 100 degrees climate.

I think my garage tile has been down for a year now, and it is still perfect.

The porcelain tile I used was specifically for outdoors and had a pressure rating suitable to park an automobile on. It was only about $2.00 per square foot.

I also used the "polymer modified large format outdoor tile setting mortar" that was specified for this job. That cost as much as the tile.

The "grout" is supposedly stain proof and flexible.

The fence he built has 128 posts and I have replaced many and have not dug one up yet.

I replaced my fence with 56 Vibirum Shrubs, then 44 Areca Palms. The concrete blobs had to go.

Living fences are more attractive.

The previous owner used at least 300lbs of cement for each post in our fence. I just use my half-inch drill with a ship auger to drill it out and a new post slides right in, no digging. One hole in each corner and one in the middle, then use a pry bar to break it up. The fence he built has 128 posts and I have replaced many and have not dug one up yet.

I remember this one fence job so many years ago John.

Like you suggested, some madman used so much cement in the holes it must have been quite cheap back then or he didn't know what a post hole digger or an auger was.

I got my Motorhead friend involved with that job as he had a heavy duty cherry picker (engine hoist).  We still had to dig around the big masonry blobs on top to get the cable around but it made the job much easier ratcheting them up.

Some of those cement blobs had to weigh 300 lbs.  The customer was also a friend and had his friend with a roll-off business drop off a dumpster.  It was a smaller roll off truck that was not powerful enough to pull all that cement weight up.  We had to unload half the dumpster and then load it back up on the truck.Tongue Tied...Sad

Just when you think you're smart and found a way to make a job go so much easier, something happens to take it all awayLaugh

I do remember I was quite sore that night like you said you were.  But I also remember sore, didn't feel as sore, back when we were youngerLaugh

Good morning, diners.  The usual for me, Brunhilda.

It's a nice day today.  Nothing scheduled!

MisterBeasley, it's funny that you said you had eight hammers.  When my father died, I found a bunch of hammers, some of which he had inherited from my grandfather.  I couldn't throw them away, so I now have a bunch of hammers in my shed.  I only use one of them.

Lion, you said you will visit your brother this summer.  Is that back in NYC?  Will you get a chance to ride the subways while you're there?

Ed, that photo of the MGB reminds me of high school.  My brother came home from the Navy on leave, and he had a red MGB.  Naturally, I wanted to drive it to impress my high school friends.  He let me drive it once or twice, but he was afraid I'd wreck it.  I remember sitting so low that I could barely see anything.

Maxman, I hadn't thought of the Transformers for Kevin's tool box until you mentioned it.  Now when I looked at it again, it does seem to fit.

David, have a good trip to Norway.  My wife's family was from there, and she used to want to go there for a trip, but now I can't get her out of the house.

TF, I'll try to take some pictures of my bridge-building project and post them later.  Your photos have helped me a lot!

Mike, that part of a job is not nice.  In my time working, I had to fire several teachers, and it was the worst part of the job.

Kevin, I'll pass on the Flamin' Hot Mountain Dew!  Your tile job in your garage looks great.  I wish I had that here.  Back when you were working on it, I asked around up here, and I was told (rightly or wrongly) that tile outdoors or in unheated garages is a hit or miss.  Evidently the tiles don't do well in below zero up to 100 degrees climate.

Robert, I'll also pass on the maple bacon donuts.  I'll just have the old-fashioned bland glazed donuts.

For everyone not mentioned, I hope you are doing well.

Here's a stock car with some unusual 'stock' inside:

Have a great day, everyone.

Really?  I guess I never thought of that but makes sense to me Mr. Lion.

I sure wish they'd come up with special flavor N scale stuff to get extra shelf space at the train shows thenLaugh...Wink

Been feeling better the last few days and was asked to paint the back walls that get banged up by carts in the two elevators in the building.  But some movers are on the east wingSad  I'd rather Not clean up painting utensils twice for half a job.

I haven't told them about installing a guard rail to protect the walls as painting the elevators twice a year is job securityWhistling

Frequently these er... "special flavored" products is just a ploy to get more shelf space in the supermarket. It does not matter if the product sells just so long as the companty gets an extra shelf!
