Evening
I took a trip down to Candyland with my Brother today. We both spent a small stack. I thought I'd share some pictures of the field trip in case any of you haven't been to your Candyland lately
That's just the model railroad stuff that's about a third of the store and I see I missed an Isles or three. If you saw anything you like perhaps I can send it to you
Thanks for looking at my favorite hobby shop and Nighty night, I gotta hit the rack

SeeYou190 I'll take care of the drinks since TF forgot.
How inconsiderate of me Kevin
I would think that should be sufficient to wet everyone's whistle this evening
Thanks for the Sam Adams. I love Boston lager.
Now I really got to hit the rack. Rest well my friends
Hello everyone!
We are closing in on the end of the month. That means we have to choose a new theme or location for the Diner. Any suggestions?
Personally I'm in the mood for some snow plough action (there's that English spelling again!). There are lots interesting videos on YouTube showing ploughs in operation with snow flying everywhere. Anyone interested?
Alternately, I'm sure a lot of us northerners would appreciate seeing some trains in locations which are warmer than what we are getting now. Southern Ontario has been hovering in the -20s and -30s C for almost two weeks and there is no end in sight. I'll be glad to see January's backside.
If you have other suggestions please speak up.
I'll move the Diner unless someone else would like to do it. I don't want to be a 'Diner Hog"!
Thanks for your input,
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Good morning Diners. Janie, Are Kevin and TF trying to get me drunk before 10.00am? I'll have a full Engish to soak up the alcohol, please.
Naming a model railroad is fun. If it is ficticious give it a history. A history as to why it is there. Why was it built? When was it built? Why is it still in existence? The factories etc. it serves? Get it right and it will grow to be (almost) real.
Another busy day ahead. Try and call in later.
David

Hi TF,
That looks like a well stocked train shop! We have a similar store here in Mississauga, ON which carries a huge inventory. My problem is that I can't search the store in detail because my back starts to hurt so much. Standing is bad enough but bending down to see what's on the bottom racks is excruciating. Same goes with train shows. I have a wheel chair but it is so obtrusive that I won't use it in crowded venues.
Thank goodness for the internet!

Great store, been going there since 80's. There, and Becker's in New Brighton.

Good Morning All! Janie, scrambled eggs and sausage please. Patties, not links.
TF, what a candyland! I haven't been to a well stocked hobby shop in ages. Where is that? (Edit: I see Terry answered that. Thanks Terry!)
Kevin, thanks for the beer. Never saw the Alpine Lager before.
Bear, you bring a topic that frequently embarrases me about my fellow Americans. I don't know if it's because of our size and relatively isolated location, but many have no clue there is a whole world out there. When we had exchange students, I always thought some questions about holidays were warranted, like do they celebrate halloween, or do they have something like labor day. It always made me shake my head when folks would ask if our exchange students celebrated Thanksgiving (with the North American history of it specifically). I was appalled when we were hosting some British soccer coaches one summer, when someone to whom I am related by marriage (not my wife) asked them if they celebrate the 4th of July! Um, no.
Ed, did you get the snow we got up here?
Naming a railroad is fun. You can even use your present location, regardless of if your railroad actually represents the area. When I first got into trains as a kid, my grandpa took me to The Train Barn in Portage, Michigan where in the upstairs was an O gauge layout called the Portage & Southern. It had no bearing on the Portage, Michigan area what so ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4Tvw6eIsPA
In addition to the layout, they had a HUGE collection of Lionel trains that actually took up most of the main floor of the barn. The collection spanned all the way to the very beginning of electric trains. You can see some of it starting at about the 8:55 mark in the video linked above. The hobby shop portion was only a very small amount of the space.
Have a good day everyone.
Mike
Good morning
I didn't really forget to answer Kevin's hobby store location question, nor trying to be an ignoramus or anything I was just waiting till I ran a thread this morning to see if I want to call the store and have a diesel pulled off the shelf.
There's a highly sought-after locomotive down there that's almost impossible to find any more. Bruce just got it in and it wants to fly off the shelf enough on it's own without advertising. I was unhappy to see it has a warped railing.
Even if just a handful of Minnesota model train enthusiasts go through that store today, that locomotive will be gone in 60 Seconds

My Wisconsin friend Terry is correct. Hi Terry

Man Dave, I feel for ya my friend.
I wish there was some kind of procedure you could get done to get rid of or at least minimize that awful back pain of yours. I know most of those procedures are extremely serious but so is really bad back pain all the time as I know you're certainly well aware of.
Most of us take our backs for granted until they go out. I'm just thankful my dilemma from repetitious abuse in the construction industry is only temporary when it does go out.
It's not really my style to stick my nose in where it doesn't belong but I just want to share with you about a procedure I had done.
My mechanic referred me to a friend of the family and also a client. He is a PRP specialist that performs this non-invasive procedure.
My mechanic Damien had a knee injury similar to mine and multiple surgeries that never really worked. He also told me of his God-awful pain in his wrist from turning wrenches his whole life that has brought him to tears at times.
He informed me he had the procedure done on his knee and highly recommended it. He also informed me a little over a month after the treatment he felt like he could run again. After his procedure on his wrist he said it doesn't hurt to turn wrenches anymore.
I had the procedure done to my knee that has had me in such horrible pain for most of my life. I have also had multiple surgeries done that never really helped. I can't say anything but good about that procedure as it worked for me as well. The only time my knee hurts anymore is when the weather changes abruptly. I plan on getting my torn rotary cuff shoulder done a bit down the road here.
Like I said, PRP is a non-invasive procedure that only takes a couple hours and one has nothing to lose looking into it.
I, of course am no authority on the success rates of the procedure done on back problems but maybe there is a good chance it could help you.
This procedure is an extreme conflict of interest and for those reasons most doctors and surgeons pretty much won't have anything good to say about it.
Good morning, diners. It's late morning and I'm ready for brunch. I'll have an omelet with just about everything in it. And coffee.
MisterBeasley, that's pretty neat to have a station called Bullwinkle on your layout town of Moose Bay. That's the kind of thing I am now considering. I guess I will know it when I think of it.
Jim, I don't remember the 1958 game although I remember watching Johnny Unitas. I don't remember seeing him on TV, but I must have watched sports reports of him. In my memory, I don't think I've ever seen an ending to a game like that Buffalo - KC game. I've been to quite a few NFL games, but nothing like that.
TF, what a great store. We have something like that in Spring Creek Model Railroad Store. What's amazing is that it is located in a small town of 750 people, 15 miles off a major highway, and 90 miles from a town of any major size. They do a lot of mail order, but their claim to fame is the personal interactions that they do at just about every train show. This weekend they are in Amherst.
Kevin, how's the ceiling work coming?
Dave, you have my vote for the diner having fun with snow plows. Thanks for doing this.
Bear, at least I can understand most English from NZ or Australia. It's the UK English I struggle with. I've watched UK programs like Keeping Up Appearances and Midsomer Murders when I had to rerun certain parts of the shows just to try to figure what was being said.
David, I have no problem reading your UK English, but I'm not sure I would be able to understand all of your spoken English. I think English people, like almost everyone else, slur their words and speak in undertones that makes it difficult for me to decipher some things.
Terry, it's nice to have you check in on the diner.
Mike, I know what you mean about many Americans and their knowledge of other parts of the world. I blame education, and I was in education. I was amazed at the number of students entering high school who had never had any study of geography or world culture. Of course, I'm only talking about some. There were many others who were on top of just about anything, even if they hadn't a class on it.
OK, now that I've bored everyone with my sermon on the evils of modern education, I'm going to take out some frustrations on my layout. Today, my chemical plant comes down. I'll try to save as much as I can. I never really finished it, so maybe it will get some finishing touches on the new layout.
I hope everyone, including those with health issues, have a good day today.
York1 John
York1 David, I have no problem reading your UK English, but I'm not sure I would be able to understand all of your spoken English.

I never said a word!
Mindst you, when I met Dawn neither of us understood each other. I am still trying to understand her.
Greetings
Just chekcing in, working late today as there is a project going live this week that I am in charge of.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will mention it to my doctor the next time we speak. Anything is worth a try. All the experts that I have seen say there is nothing that can be done other than pain killers, which I do not like!
Cheers!!
Good Evening,
We had a one day heat wave here today. It hit 32F but the temp has already dropped. I used the opportunity to get the car washed.
TF, nice hobby shop you have down there. We only have one small RR shop here now.
Interesting discussion on accents. I find it easy to understand the accents on shows from GB. I struggle sometimes with southern US accents. My paternal grandmother was born and raised in Surrey and I don't remember her having an accent at all. Guess it depends on what you are used to.
Nothing new here. Did a grocery pickup today. Haven't touched the passenger car kit for several days. Maybe I'll tackle the other truck kit tomorrow.
Have a nice evening. I have some tea from Fortnum &Mason and cup is in order.

Charlie, believe it or not, I have a brother in Georgia, and his entire family has such a strong accent that I have trouble understanding them sometimes.
In Louisiana, our school janitor was a Cajun. When he talked to me he would break out laughing because I would have a strange look on my face trying to decipher what he was saying.
32°F? Man! I hope you weren't out of suntan lotion Charlie. Send it down here again if you would. We've been in the Frigid Freeze Factor down here again.
Did you all know what day it is today?
Only a day and a half till WPF
POST HOG!
We used to go down to New Orleans quite a bit when most of Judy's family still lived down there. There is that Southern drawl thing going on.
The funny thing is people told me I had an accent and asked me where I was from. When I said Minnesota most people wanted to shake my hand. It was because around that time Jesse Ventura was our governor in Minnesota. I guess even people down there liked Jesse.
We stayed at Judy's sister's house in Gretna. There was a gas station a block and a half away from her house that had the best Po-Boys. Barb said you can go anywhere in New Orleans but they have the best Po-Boys right at our gas station cafe. Yep they were the good ones. You knew you had a good one when you needed plenty of napkins because the juice was dripping down your wrists
Judy and I are kind of excited because a new New Orleans restaurant is opening up in Edina here. It's called Mister Pauls and I guess the reviews of the food are Excellent! Paul is a chef born and raised in New Orleans so this place ought to be good.
Gretna -- on the West Bank! Several of my friends used to live over there. It's a little easier to get to since a second bridge was built in the 1980s. My wife taught a fourth grade class over there.
Small world, that's kinda cool John. I remember talking New Orleans with ya a few times here over the years.
We would rent a van and all take turns driving down there from Minnesota. I remember we'd cross this bridge just prior to arriving that just kept going and going and going. You didn't feel like you'd ever get to the end of that bridge.
Tired, I'm hitting the rack folks. Have a great night
Good morning Diners. A full English please, Zoe.
Gretna! I thought we were in Scotland for a minute.
We have family arriving for lunch today and I am cooking beef stroganoff with vegetables etc. There should be some left, so I'll leave it in the Diner.
Back later

I love beef stroganoff David. Glad ya left some in the Dinner. We are each in charge of certain dishes that we make here. I just got done making a great big lasagna a few days ago. I don't know what it is about Italian that it just gets better and better in the refrigerator. Judy makes the beef stroganoff and I think we are about due. I think I'm gonna have to rattle her cage about it this morning

Not much happening here. Hope everyone is doing well.
Good morning. Please bring lots of black coffee this morning.
Have a date with my dermatologist this morning. We get together every six months. Each time he asks me if I wear a hat. I think it's too late for that. He also told me that the problems I get now are probably from sunburns when I was much younger. Not sure why that means I should wear a hat now.

Yeah, and that was when he was speaking English. When you head out into Cajun territory, it's pretty neat listening to them talk to each other.
Destruction of the layout continues today. It's going much slower than I planned. I think there's an issue with the number and length of the coffee breaks taken by the worker.
Have a good day, everyone.
Have we done the Caseey Jones diner in Ronks PA?

Good Morning,
Sorry TF but the heat is gone. High today is to be 1F. Surprised you didn't get it too as it came on a strong wind from the south. Glad you scored on that DMIR loco. Have you seen the DVD that has footage of DW&P steam along with DM&IR plus Duluth & Notheastern? It is on a Newt Rossiter video from Greg Scholl. Not a lot of footage but it is nice to see steam in action.
I'm in the doghouse again. I moved the neighbour's ladder off of our fence. He used the post at the back corner of our yard to hang his ladder and it was 2 feet at least in my yard. The fence post is mine too. The wife is afraid he will retaliate and do something nasty. He isn't a bad fellow just a little thoughtless. His yard is behind the neighbour beside us so our properties only touch at one corner.
I've never been to New Orleans. Florida is the only area in southern US I have visited. My parents had a condo in St. Petersburg for 15 years and I visited a few times. Also did a road trip in 1973 from London,Ont. right to Key West.
Time for more coffee.

Mike, thanks for the support. I will be replacing the entire fence around our back yard in May, assuming the frost is out of the ground by then! I had the current fence built by a good friend when we moved in back in 1990. We located the survey stakes before the fence was built and it is 2" inside our property line. The new one will be to as we want to decide the style and height. The neighbours are fine with that as they get a new fence at no cost to them. We hope to do it in cedar so it will be a very expensive fence.
