Hi Kevin,
Thanks for doing that.
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Dave,
I took care of it already. I assumed this addition did not need any discussion.

Living the dream.
Hi gang,
Can someone tell me how to add Garry's name and avatar to the RIP Track?
Garry Boyd aka Heartland Division CB&Q RR, 1944 - 2021
You can get his avatar on page 4 or 5 of the November Diner. I can't figure out how to copy it.
Thanks,
moelarrycurly4 I met him the one time along with Kevin.
That was a great day. I had a copy of the picture of the three of us in front of Garry's magnificent bridge scene. I cannot remember what I named the file, and I cannot find it.
I will open Weekend Photo Fun in a couple of hours with a special post for Garry. If you have a copy of that picture, I would love for you to share it in that thread.
So sorry to hear about Garry's passing.
Brent, I am glad that you are okay. Thanks for sharing the videos and the photos. The level of destruction is devastating. I hope BC can recover quickly, although I can see that some of the damage will obviously take months to repair.
Take care,
I am too tired to get up from the computer, the wife brought me a glass of the good stuff. I asked where hers was and she said she will drive if we get called. The perfect wife.
Here's to ya Garry.

Along with all the other damage, a lot of pipelines are shut down as are many Hydro routes due to washouts. This will affect the U.S. as well as B.C. supplies a lot of power to the South of the border.

Well,
Phooey, I just read of Garry's passing. He ws a really nice person. I met him the one time along with Kevin.
if I were not in Mississippi I would go to his memorial service.
Well doesn't this add to what has already been a week for the books. As Rich stated Gary was a true gentleman/gentle person that I will miss. He joined the forum shortly after I did if I remember correctly, back in those days there were some nasty people that tried to cause a lot of trouble, and when it came to the racist in the crowd I just could not sit back and keep my mouth shut. Gary would PM me way back then when his PM function would work, offering me support and telling me to just ignore them and let the moderators take care of it. We had some good chats way back when. Through our conversations, it sounded like his home life and family were just what one could have asked for. I bought a bottle of the good stuff to help relax from the long wet days we are going through, I will raise a glass for Gary tonight if the phone stops ringing.
Just got back from picking up a couple of thousand pounds of specialized feed and distributed it around. The death toll is in the hundreds of thousands for the agricultural industry. The saddest to see is all the drowned calves. This area supplies more than half of all the dairy and poultry to the province and it has been decimated.
I have sat down to post a few times but the phone would ring and off we would go. I had to get the saw out and clear three trees before I could even get off the street.
We bought some pumps and decided we had one more than we needed so I wanted to get it back to HD so someone else could use it as the shelves were empty. I was met by people out in the parking lot offering me big money for it, I said to the guy I sold it to, just give me what I paid for it and it is yours. I am glad I went to take it back as he was desperate.
The weather people are saying that it was a once in 500-year event, I can believe that. I have been to a lot of places on this planet and sat through many tropical downpours. On a flat island with some palm trees, the rain falls and runs into the ocean, here in the land of mountains, streams, and rivers it is not quite that simple. You could say we got ripped a new one in every valley that carries water.
We live on the high ground at 90m. Our property has a 4% slope. Even though we are at the top of the hill the water was pouring out of the storm drains, it has never even come close to doing that before.
The West coast is cut off from the rest of the country and they don't even know when the rail lines will get back up. The ships are already piled up at the anchorages along the coast and cannot divert anywhere else as they are backed up everywhere. An awful lot of container traffic bound for the U.S. mid-West and the Gulf States comes through Vancouver with CN running what they call "hot shots" through to these areas.
I don't think there will be shortages of anything, however, while I was out helping out where I could the wife surveyed our food supplies and said we can eat like kings and Queens for seven months and had 105 liters of gas on hand. She then fired up the generator just to check it worked. It better have worked, I took the thing apart and gave it a complete service during the dog days of last summer. She then contacted the inlaws and other elderly people we often take meals to and got a list of groceries they needed and she went and spent $1400.00 at Costco and delivered it all to them.
We only lost power for a few seconds here and there as the water caused a brief short and did not lose internet. I have said it before on this forum, those that are prepared for these times are great and it makes helping out each other easy. Those that are not are a pain in the ass. The one guy down the road has been trying to hire people for a bunch of issues he is facing and of course, he is on his own in this mess, the pros are looking after their own families or helping with more important things.
The internet is full of pics and vids but here are a few.

Today
311 people, 26 dogs a cat and 1 chicken to safety in Agassiz after landslides trapped drivers on one section of road in British Columbia.
It is still an hour and a half till happy hour, though I will hold off because the phone will surely ring.
So sorry to hear of Garrys death. Though I never met him I feel I knew him and considered him a friend. I can only echo others who found him unfailingly kind. I will miss him, Garrys sense of humor and his photos and posts. Most sincere condolences to his family. J.R.
So sorry to hear about Garry. We will miss his photos of his Burlington layout.
Sad day in the diner.

My Madigascar Palm has shed its leaves for the Winter. It is not actually a Palm Tree at all.
With the foliage gone, a large wasp nest was revealed. This was less than ten feet from my front door!
The nest was destroyed after I took the pictures.
Condolences to Garry's friends and family.

I am going to enjoy a Pumpkin Ale for the holidays, and remember a great day with my friend Garry.

bjdukertIt is a sad day in the Diner as Garry has passed away. I had met him twice and he was one of the nicest people to ever meet and he will be remembered for the way his layout looks and his puns.
I met Garry once, and visited his masterpiece of a home layout in Kentucky.
This is a tragic loss for our community. Garry truly was an underspoken nice man. A true modeler with a lot of talent.
That is very sad news.
I will miss his wonderful model RR and his wit.
Garry was a very caring person.

That is depressing news. Thinking of his family.
I'll raise a highball to toast his memory. Join me fellas. To Garry.
That is awful news and I'm very saddened to hear this.
My condolences to his family and friends.

BTW - I found out why embedded YouTube videos are not showing anymore. They need to be https instead of http. If you are able to edit your post and go to the Source Code <> you can add the 's' to your post and the video will show up. Most sites no longer show any images or videos that are not https as it can be unsafe.

Found this magazine ad from Dec 1943 Macleans Magazine:
Founded in 1912, National Steel Car is the largest manufacturer of rolling stock in Canada, and WW2 really brought the company back after the depression. They are still located in Hamilton - I drive by the plant when I visit my daughter there. They have a very cool Art Deco front building that can be seen at the corner of Burlington & Kenilworth:
Hi Everyone,
John: I really liked the map showing the military installations in 1943. The blow up shows Ft. Riley, which is still a busy fort, home of the First Division. It has seen lots of changes overthe years.
Another one is Camp Phillips to the west. Camp Phillips as an army post was abandoned after WWII. However, very close by was the old Smokey Hill AAF base. I'm not sure if they had B17s or B24s stationed there, but I am sure that they had B29s there. Later on there were B47s and KC97s (tankers) there. The name was changed to Shilling Air Force Base in 1957 and lasted until it was closed down in 1965. Almost devastated Salina, the town nearby, which depended on military economy. Fortunately, the town survived, but it was definitely a different place after the base closed.

Good morning all!
Left hip replacement went good, it was done on Monday, because it was late in the day, the doc decided I should spend the night.
I read the surgeon's notes and summery documents. We have a thing called My Chart, and it's a great way to keep in touch with your medical team. Messages get answered with in a few hours, or sooner.
He listed the inplants he used, were all from a manufacturer named DePuy. Even had part numbers, so I had to look them, and see what my new left hip includes.
What else does one do when you can't do too much?
He used an anterior (from the front) approach, less evasive. So now the healing starts.
Not much else going on in my world right now, as this hip thing has dominated my life since early Sept.
I won't attempt the basement stairs, to get to the layout, for another week yet.
Back to scrolling through MR reading and catching up on posts.
Mike.

Good morning, diners. Brunhilda, I'd like black coffee. Lots of it.
There must be video bugs on the site today. None of them are working. That means I won't be spending quite as much time as normal in the diner!
While cleaning my layout storage closet yesterday, I found this. I forgot I had it. It's a pretty neat map of all the military bases in the U.S. along with the train routes. I guess since UP did the map, their route is highlighted. The map's date is 1943:
Have a good day, everyone.
