It has been a while, with good reason, since I have posted any progress pictures of my house.

I did a little side project, and built a corner landscape wall in the front yard.

I am quite happy with how it turned out.

WinkMornin' Folks!

York1
Another day to get leaves picked up. The oak trees are finally starting to drop the leaves. I wish they would all decide to fall at one time.

Only a couple trees around here that have not yet dumped all their leaves.  Usually the Maple tree next door drops them all in about 2 hours (whoosh!!!), this year it was over about a week's time.  I put on my winter coat and gloves yesterday, got my EGO Electric mower out and did the deed for the the last time this year.  Told a couple neighbors that was easier than shoveling the snow off the yard before I mow for the last time.....

Will start to thaw the Bird later today (in the refrigerator) for the Feast on Thursday.  Yep!  I am doing the Thanksgiving Dinner here for the family once more.  I think I have everything I need to do the bird, potatoes, baked squash, gravy.  Others will be bringing some other items.  Then next Saturday I will be taken to a rather famous and pricy restaurant to celebrate my birthday (75).  I told my DiL that if they were taking me to Belhurst Castle for my 75th. then where would they take me for my 100th.?  She came right back with, "Hooter's"WinkCool

Frankly, I would rather they kept it small and quiet.......

Life is a precious gift. I hope everyone can enjoy today to the fullest!

Amen to that!  In the words of my FiL on his 90th., "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!"  Then he took another puff on his cigar!

Have a good one wherever you are!

Good morning, diners.  Just coffee this morning.

I didn't stay up for the eclipse.  I wondered why they kept saying it was the first in 800 years since I saw an eclipse several years ago.  It was explained to me that partials are rare; normally they are full eclipses.  That's a pretty neat picture, Bear.

Another day to get leaves picked up.  The oak trees are finally starting to drop the leaves.  I wish they would all decide to fall at one time.

The kiwiburger looks good.  Is it lamb?  I ask because that looks kind of like tzatziki sauce.  And are those beets I see?

Mike, a Kiwiburger contains a beef patty, a fried egg, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, cheese, onions, mustard, and tomato sauce on a toasted bun. I make my patties with beef mince (ground beef), sausage meat, finely chopped onion, a couple of cloves of crushed garlic, and salt and pepper to taste.

Some things that happened last week.

After 5 years, part time, a local chap finished building this Bearhawk, I did the final inspection which included checking the rigging and travel of all the controls, The Civil Aviation Authority signed on the dotted line and a very happy chap went on the successful first flight.

It’s been a while, but I got to play with one of these.

Lyc IO-720 by Bear, on Flickr

Once a common power plant in the New Zealand skies, but now supplanted by turbines, the Lycoming IO-720, 400 hp, 8 cylinder horizontally opposed, with straight pipes is one of my favourite sounds, though in this short, shaky video, Tom the pilot was being courteous to the neighbours.

Another thing that graced the Friday night skies was the longest partial lunar ellipse seen here since 1212, how they know that I’m not sure as the first arrival of the great Polynesian Navigators in New Zealand is dated between 1200 and 1300! The next one is supposed to be in another 800 years, so I guess I’ll miss out on that event!

Good afternoon from a dry West Coast.

Just hung 46 strings of Christmas lights, once upon a time, it was well over a hundred strings. As they fail I do not replace them anymore, getting old makes the enthusiasm wain somewhat. People keep buying me stuff and I put it up but even with that, I am winning the attrition battle.Laugh Someone gave me two of those high-end light projector systems that I put up as well but that takes about two minutes. I was shocked at the price of them when my wife told me, I would have never paid for something like that. High-end industrial stuff.

CP says they should have the line to the coast open in ten days, I have not heard about CN yet. CP has over 20 major washouts including some pretty big bridges. Of course in this part of the country, it is all bridges.Laugh I can't imagine how many ships are now waiting up and down the coast.

May be an image of outdoors

When I was working I would always work from mid-day Christmas Eve through to dinner time Christmas day. I was single and thought it was important the guys with families spent the time with their families. Plus I got paid triple time for doing it.Laugh

The airport would be very quiet and I would often sit and think of how hard it must have been for those serving to be away from home over Christmas. My Uncle left Canada in 1939 and did not get home again until the fall of 1945.

Timmy, that old car is pretty cool. My Grandfather was a medic in WWI and started in the trenches for a couple of years and because he survived got promoted to driving an ambulance which was more dangerous according to him because he was always out in the open. We have some old photos of him and his ambulance. I still have his kit from that war.

It appears I can post photos again, couldn't yesterday.

They were interviewing some of the crews at anchor and they said they couldn't ask for better scenery while they wait.

Has a roast beef feast last night cooked to perfection, we get a rerun tonight, can't wait!Dinner I only eat once a day so I don't have to hold back.MischiefLaugh

Think I'll go fire up the layout for a few laps before happy hour and hockey.

All the best to all.

John.   My Grandmother was a WW1 nurse.  She never said anything about it except she was at the 'front line'.  To me the hospital staff were unsung heroes/heroines  in any war.

Afternoon, everyone.

David, reading through that wartime hospital train story, it made me think of our Christmas Eves and Christmases today.

We will be go a warm, comfortable church service, we'll come home to a nice warm house with a crackling fire, we'll eat and drink anything we desire, and we probably won't think twice how blessed we are.

It's hard to read how those wartime people suffered on Christmas -- not just the soldiers, but all the others who supported the war effort, like your story of the nurses and train crews.

Rough morning for me in the Trackside Diner!

First I get called Curly, then I get accused of ruining an innocent teenager's life.

Chloe, I am going to need to fill up on Bear's sweets to get over this. Bring me the whole plate!

As am I apparently.

The kiwiburger looks good.  Is it lamb?  I ask because that looks kind of like tzatziki sauce.  And are those beets I see?  As always, the sweets look good.

Planning on putting up the rest of the outdoor holiday lights today.  Other houses in the neighborhood have started lighting theirs, so ours will be on starting tonight.

MLC, the picture you posted of the three of you by Garry's layout made me think, well there they are.  In order, Larry, Moe, and Curly! Laugh  No offense intended.  Just found humor in a photo of three guys posted by someone who's forum name harkens to three (very?) different guys, one of which is sporting the same haircut as Curly!

Good evening, it was a rather quiet day today, the calm after the storm. Things should really start to crank up tomorrow to get things back to normal. They started gas rationing today as the pipelines have not been able to start pumping again. Someone suggested Washington State will help fill the shortfall in the fuel crunch but somehow forgot that Washington State gets a lot of its oil from Alberta down the rail lines that do not exist anymore. I have lots of gas on hand so we don't need to worry. The roads are very empty, I was going down the eight-lane on the edge of the flood zone and was the only one I could see on the Hwy in either direction for a while.

The passport requirement for Canadians going to the U.S. has been lifted for the first time since 911 so a lot of people that are trapped here can head East via the U.S.

If I was still working I can't imagine how crazy it would be. I worked 52 hours straight once when we had a major event happening. You only get tired when you have time to think about it.Laugh

It's early but I think it is rack time, who knows what tomorrow holds.

As I have been working on a landscape wall project for the past few days that nearly wore me out... I decided it was time to invest in a small concrete mixer.

This should save me a lot of time, which is in tight supply right now.

My countertop was supposed to be installed yesterday in my closet. They called and said it would be delayed until today. Today they did not show up and did not call. I am pretty upset about that.

The drawers are all stacked in the living room right now. I want to get this done!

After a long, hot, frustrating w**k day, my mood was not improved late last night, by the news of Heartland Garry’s passing.
However, after a far better day, (I actually achieved what I set out to do); on reflection Garry did mention occasionally his major medical “meltdown” requiring a major medical intervention, 13 (??) years ago.

So, my deepest condolences go to Shelley, who he mentioned with great fondness, his family, and his close friends.

But of those 13(??) years, as a forum member for the last 10 years, I got to appreciate that not only was Garry, a Gentleman in the true sense of the word, but a fine modeller, (if I can get my layout scenery flow as seamlessly to the backdrop half as good as Garry’s, I’d be a pretty happy chap), and a “terrible” Punster!Bang HeadLaughLaugh

And even though I’ll miss my weekly CB&Q fix, I feel thankful for small mercies.

Just knew Garry through this forum. His posts will be missed.

I realise the topic this month is 'War on the rails', so this may be a bit of a strech but,...

I believe this could have been used to transport troops

I somhow mannaged to upload all these pictures at once to postimage, ( never have been good with compooters) so, ... YAY, Timmy lernt something new !

Also: I recently got a brass locomotive for my birthday, but the tender has corroded and has decaying foam all over it . I gave it a bath in vinager, but that didnt really help. I also 'discovered' that its Brass plated copper, and the plating is coming off.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to get rid of the stains / corrosion.

I normally would just hit it with some Laquer thinner, ... but  I'm thinking  "Tarnex" may be my onlr hope.

Rust...... It's a good thing !

Thanks Kevin, recovering from a hip replacement.  I'll have more computer time.

Mike.

If it's any consolation, my former father-in-law had a hip replacement when he was 85 years old.  He did it to get back on the tennis courts, and he did.

Not a happy day here in the Diner.  Sorry to hear about our friend Garry.

We don't get much news at all about the devastation in Canada.  Of course, we don't watch TV at all, let alone the news, so our visibility into that is somewhat limited.

Good morning Diners.  A strong, black coffee please.

What a morning for sad news.

First, I was on the U.K. Forum I am a member of and had news of two members passing.    Now here I find Garry is running trains 'upstairs'.

My sincerest condolences to his family.
