I have an underwear question. There is a really obnoxious Hanes commercial where a guy with a peculiar accent is advertising these long legged underwear, looks like bike pants. He says it helps your balance (balance rhymes with fall) Tommy Johns look the same.

My father's mens' shop sold Steadman midlengths in the 60's. I had the stocking job in the summer and I don't think we sold any. Eventually we only sold briefs and boxers.

Does anybody wear that kind? They look like they would be too warm.

Hello Railfans!

Today pretty much went as expected until about an hour ago. And correct me if im wrong but i seem to remember reading above something about "home" for this months theme???

Well, I got some of the worst news you could get from what used to be my "home" that hour ago.... Ive lost a very dear friend. Seems to be a recurring theme these last few days as we lost Preacher Bob (whom i did not know), Randy (whom I did), and now my friend.

Im pretty sure none of you would know him. But this guy was rather special, and i have to say very unique. Yes he was a Railfan. Tis why im mentioning this as he wasnt just one of my oldest and dearest friends, he was actually a Railfan's Railfan. The ultimate.

Im sure each of you could drop a name of a certain person in your lives who really put the fire under your hobby. My friend devoted hours upon hours mentoring me for which I will forever be greatful, and thankful for, and cherish the rest of my life. I couldnt have had a better way to begin this hobby!

He was a father, retired, veteran, god fearing, Southern Ry Railfan extraodinaire. Probably not in that order. Although he avoided the spotlight, I feel he should be mentioned. He always gave, never taikng a thing. I owe him dearly!

My friend was born Joseph L. Robey. Those who did know him, he was just Joe - under a green Southern hat.

"He climbed in' the cab, orders in his hand....

taking that trip to the promised land."

In memorium with all my Respect,

Douglas C.

Good Evening,

Seems silly to say good morning even though it is after midnight.

Wife got her second shot of vaccine today.

Very hot here, mifht hit 100F tomorrow but will be back to about 80 by Monday. Still no rain. The lawn in front crunches when you step on it. We water a lot in back so I'm expecting an outrageous water bill in August.

Kevin, that seems about right for tires. I have Michelin tires on my car which cost about $300 each. They only last about 40k miles as they are a softer compound. Mind you they have a V speed rating which I seem to recall means 160 mph but the softer rubber also means they aren't bad on ice.

No plans here except keepng cool. Think I'll have a G&T tomirrow with a shot of Roses lime cordial.

Good morning Diners. It is morning here in the UK, Charlie. Smile

Toast and tea please, Brunhilda.

PM Railfan. The loss of a 'Buddy' is hard I know. Some Diners know I grew up around road haulage and spent nigh on 70 years involved one way and another.

My buddy, John and I would spend many a Saturday evening telling 'tales of the road' with a glass of whisky in hand. Talking to the early hours 'til the bottle ran dry. -- --- I have a model of his vehicle he drove on my layout.

A quiet day in the diary, so I might be able to run a few trains later.

Happy Saturday!

I normally don't post videos that are exceedingly long but I'll make an exception here:

Wow, these folks have a backyard railroad to be envious of!

Since it is a long weekend for some of you, take the time to have a look Big Smile

Good Morning All,

Well who knew? That railroad is not more than 20 miles from me and I had never heard of it. Private indeed and more power to him. There is lots of undeveloped land in the vicinity and it used to be very cheap but even then, the commitment and expense is super impressive.

Still raining here but the temps have dropped significantly so I'm probably off to the old house to do some more load out and spackling and hopefully we can start on getting it listed soon.

Gotta run so I'll just take my regular to go and skedaddle. Ciao, J.R.

Good morning, diners.

Ed, that's an amazing railroad in your video. The curved trestle, the other bridges and tunnels, the working signals, and everything else... I can't imagine the work and the money.

Douglas PM, so sorry about the loss of your friend. Since we will all be there sooner or later, it's good to hear that it sounds like he lived life the way it should be lived -- helping others enjoy life.

Charlie, I also have Michelins on my Expedition. They are at about 55,000 right now, and they still look very good. I'm having them rotated next week, and the mechanic can tell me what shape they're in. I know the ride improved immediately when we bought them several years ago, so I was happy with them.

David, do you have any cruises coming up? I see that the American cruises are just beginning to go out again. We won't be taking any, but I miss them. I wish my wife would change her mind about going again.

JR, good luck on finishing the old house and getting it sold.

Henry, I don't think I've seen that commercial.

Not much going on today again. We're between trips right now, and about the only work I'm getting done is cutting the grass several times a week. I can't seem to be inspired to do much else.

I went over to the school the other day and visited several of the teachers. After being gone from there for only four years, it seemed like I was visiting a foreign country. I wanted to see the newly remodeled boys and girls PE locker rooms. I had a good talk with the most important person in any school -- the custodian. Nice time, but I don't miss the day-to-day at all.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday.

John. We are thinking of a 'Round Britain' cruise, but with Dawn being disabled, so many obstacles to go thru.

Maybe one day.

Two ships in Dubai. Standing next to Queen Elizabeth 2, Dawn and I made our first cruise together on. In the background our last cruiseship to sail on, MSC Bellissima.

The GF and I have done some cruises, both together and apart. We agree that smaller ships are better. We are particularly fond of the Windstar ships, which can visit much smaller ports and islands. Our favorite is the Wind Surf, which only takes about 300 passengers.

We had just returned from a Caribbean cruise when Covid hit. We were hoping to do Alaska but those plans went away. Not sure when we can cruise again. Being forced to wear masks kills travel for us.

Next time I sea her I'll alska.: )

Elevator is still not working in the monastery, and that has been three weeks now. WTH: I just might as well climb up to the train room and put the lights on.

I'll knead some ATF to clean the tracks...(Automatic Trnsmissi9n Fluid, not Alcohol Tobaco and Firearms)'

Speaking of firearms, the sporting goods stores here have been out of stock for months. They used to have thousands and thusands of boxes of ammo on the shelves, now all that is there is dust. They have a few rifles and hand gyuns, but none of them are sexy ones that people want. Those have been sold long ago.

Oh Yeah... ATF... I do not need a whole can of it, all I need is a little dropper bottle of the stuf, and I can get hat from the garage. (We have a nine car garage, and still park about seven cars out doors.)

Then I will climb up the stairs and with a felt pad attached to a stick, I will give the acessable tracks a thin coating, and then allow the wheels to spread it around the layout. After all, I do have 14 scale miles of track. And subway tracks *like* to live in tunnels.

Good afternoon diners.

I spent the last hour or two making a wonderful batch of Jambalaya.

I bought 4 pounds of hot country sausage at Carroll's in Sylvester, Georgia when I was there. This is the good stuff.

I made a huge batch with four pounds of rice. A pound of chicken and three pounds of shrimp.

It is so delicious!

Lion, when you finally crawl up to your third floor, how about some pictures of the subway system? I've missed them.

If you can make it, come on down. There is plenty.

Continuing to go through all the old pictures.

I don't know whose layout this picture was taken on, but it shows part of the early version of the Fleet Of Nonsense, in N scale. The picture is probably from the early 1990s.

I have a feeling it was my old friend Ron's layout in Naples, but I cannot be sure.

There are a few STRATTON AND GILLETTE boxcars, one for RAIL TREK, and one for the OKLAHOMA CITY AND OMAHA. I received the latter two roadnames through decal trades.

In this picture, STRATTON AND GILLETTE layout #3 can be seen under construction in the upper left. I know this picture was from January, 1992, because it was taken right before we left for the Metallica concert at the Lee County Civic Center. This was a great day.

I am amazed at how many pictures of my kids have random train cars in them.

My wife and I pondered that picture for a while. The only thing we can figure is that she must have sat down at the table after her older sister ate whatever was in the bowl. She was not a neat eater!

BigDaddy
I have an underwear question. There is a really obnoxious Hanes commercial where a guy with a peculiar accent is advertising these long legged underwear, looks like bike pants. <SNIP> Does anybody wear that kind? They look like they would be too warm.

I think this is the first undergarment question I have seen in the diner.

Whistling

I have only worn Fruit Of The Loom boxer/briefs for a couple of decades. The legs are not quite as long as the Hanes product you mentioned.

The ones you described look very comfortable, but warm. Yes, the "accent" is obnoxious. I was going to post the video, but it is a tad bit too over-the-top for this forum.

Happy Independence Day!

My middle daughter rode her big wheel in a small-town celebration of the Fourth Of July back in 1992.

Kevin the rules don't specify not discussing clothing. Lion is flying closer to the sun than I am. The toy store here has some of the sexy toys but nothing to feed them with.

The commercial plays a lot on the channels I watch and is easily found on youtube. It achieves it's goal of being memorable. I could do with fewer commercials for highly personal products, but underwear is mostly ubiquitous. I've only know one doctor who did not wear underwear.

For the record I used to wear briefs, switched to boxers and back to briefs after varicocoele surgery.

Whale... It web server that we have is undergoing a meltdown (again). I think I will outsource the "Lion" server again and sea watt I can do.

Even if I cnnot get to the train room, there is no reason why I cannot get a server working and display the work that I already Have.

But I do have to make a new video, since mush has changed since the last one.

Happy 4th of July!

My town had a lot of money go up in noisy smoke last night, and I'm sure there will be a lot more tonight. I haven't bought any this year since we aren't going anywhere. I'll just watch the action tonight from my front porch. I love it.

It's a great day for grilling meat, drinking cold drinks, and enjoying the day.

We are heading into our normal July heat wave. This week, the temperature will be near 100° with a dewpoint over 70°. It's steamy.

I'm working on some small buildings for the layout. The railroad doesn't get much attention in the summer.

This week I will try to head out to get some photos of trains and stations in my area. If you don't like coal trains or grain hopper trains, you wouldn't like much train watching here.

I hope everyone has a good holiday today and tomorrow.

Good afternoon all.

Zoe - A Coke float please. Thanks.

Henry - So it's now "Boxers, Briefs, or Leggings?" Huh?

Ed - Neat vid. Thanks. I really like how big that track layout was, and the working full size signals are very cool!

David - Neat little museum there.

Lion - Hopefully the server issue is an easy fix for you.

Continuing WNYP - Most of the trains they run near me, are locals. Following are pictures of two typical locals.

WNYP 630 Winter by Richard W, on Flickr

Yes, this is a typical winter day in my area. Snow and clouds. C630M 630 (Former A&M, Built by MLW for CP as 4500 in 1968.) leads a pair of 4 axle units.

ME-1 by Richard W, on Flickr

On a much nicer summer day, 421 leads sister units 426 and 430 on a ME-1 returning to Meadville while rolling just west of Columbus Pa, which is just east of Corry. (421 & 426 in my last post, 430 is Alco built C430, built as NYC 2050 in 1967.)

This railroad has 3 operating C430 units! (All 3 were made in HO scale by Bowser, and are very well done models.)

One neat section, located in Columbus, is a very unusual prototype. There is a passing siding located here, with control points of East and West Columbus. The turnouts are controlled by Dispatcher, and have operating signals, but they are set to display turnout position for direction of travel. Green means clear main, yellow clear siding. It also has a siding that sits higher than the main!

Siding Prototype for everything 1 by Richard W, on Flickr

When Conrail single tracked the former 2 track Erie RR main, they used the main that was the freight bypass route, that went east of Columbus through Lottsville PA, before crossing into NY state. (The original Erie main went through Bear Lake Pa into NY state, but had a steeper grade than the cutoff.) But because that was the "newer" line, it sat lower than the alongside "old" main that was torn out. They left a segment here for a passing siding, and WNYP did use this siding as a passing siding when they hosted NS 520 series coal drags. At times, they would have a loaded and empty NS Coal drag meet here, with the local meeting both here as well!

Now, it is a storage track for the time being. But there really is "a prototype for everything", including sidings sitting at or higher than the main line. (Boy, won't THAT make rivet counters go bananas!)

WNYP & NS by Richard W, on Flickr

Here is WNYP train ME-1 passing a NS 520 series coal drag that had outlawed at the Columbus siding.

NS Coal 52X sitting on Columbus siding by Richard W, on Flickr

Here is a NS 520 series empty coal waiting on the siding for a 520 series loaded train coming eastbound.

I mentioned they have recently acquired some rebuilt GE locomotives to replace the "Big 6's" they have. Following are 2 of them, taken from the wrong side of the tracks on one unfortunately, but when they surprise you, you take what you can get.

WNYP 6002 on Home rails by Richard W, on Flickr

WNYP 6004 by Richard W, on Flickr

While they are not Alco's, they do look sharp in the corporate black and yellow scheme.

They cross the B&P at grade in Corry Pa, at MS Interlocking, known as Corry Diamond, which operates on a "first in first through" principal, with working interlocking signals. WNYP has the old CR round Tri-lights, while B&P has old PRR Position light signals, converted to displaying red signals when in Stop. They also go under the B&P in Carrolton NY.

426 led ME-1 Smoke Show by Richard W, on Flickr

Here is a picture of 426 leading ME-1 westbound, with the diamond in the background. Typical WNYP engineer "railfan" smoke show as well.

This line formerly hosted OC&T excursions, pulled by a NYLE Alco set, but that ended when NS agreed to run the 520 series trains through.

Next installment will be about a different line.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

The local TV station had a human interest story about dedication on a bench, outside the old Chesapeake Western Rail Depot. I don't know anything about that railroad, but the building still exists in town.

It is dedicated to a railworker who died in 1973. He started working for the railroad in 1938. He was supposed to manatorily retire at age 65 but he kept showing up for work, then at age 70, then 75 and he kept coming back. Finally they said this is it. He went out to the bench, sat down and died. Or at least that's the story they are telling us.

At any rate he had a dedication to his work and should be remembered for that.
