Good morning Diners.  Tea and toast  please, Flo.

A warm, cloudy day here in the UK.

Plenty of activity in the Diner last night. Smile

Kevin.  Another great set of photographs.   Thanks.   Enjoy your stay in Seattle.

Not sure what the plans are today.  I'll try to 'escape' to the train room.

Those missing from the Diner I hope are well and whatever challenges they are facing will soon be over.

Thoughts & Peace to All who Require.

Hello and good evening to everyone.

This is going to be a short update. There was rain most of the day, and picture taking was minimal.

We drove across Washington today. The weather was bad, and the sky was threatening while we were on the Eastern side of the state.

We saw some beautiful farmland, but the lighting and atmospheric conditions were just terrible.

When we hit the middle of the state, the skies opened up and the rain came down. We drove through some beautiful terrain, but could not take any pictures.

We arrived in Seattle at about 6:00 PM after a very difficult final leg of the drive.

The rental car has problems. The check engine light came on, and I was given notice from the information screen that the engine is running in a derated condition, but I did not notice a difference. I will call National tomorrow and find out what to do.

Here in Seattle we ran across a pretty pregnant woman that looks a bit like me. I think I will spend the weekend hanging out with her.

I will probably not post another update until next week.

Take care, and stand by.

The World Is A Beautiful Place.

Hi TF,

I have been listening to Gordon Lightfoot for more than 50 years. It never gets stale. Our son gave us tickets to see him a couple of years ago. We were really looking forward to seeing him again, but Covid caused the concert to be cancelledGrumpy. We don't know if he will do any more concerts. We hope so but he is in his 80s.

He does have a colourful past. I saw him in Peterborough, Ontario in the mid 70s. He was so drunk on stage that he fell off the piano stool. (Yes, he plays piano too).

We listen to Lightfoot regularly on You Tube Music. I love it because they play the old stuff as well as the new.

A black and white video for you Ed, since you sent so many through the years.

I have always liked Geddy Lee and shook his hand once at the old Met.  Neil Peart and John have shorter hair now and I should that play that video some time soon.

Some nights are raspier then others and demand other bands that sound better!

And no one does it better than the three man Canadian band Rush

Nobody took much notice.  It was Harrison Ford.  He is around our area filming the next 'Indiana Jones' film.   The local Television Companies are 'going mad'  as they haven't seen him yet.

Interesting stuff.

Before I fell back into my Construction after coming back from the Canadian border to the city again, I started out as a pizza delivery guy.

My friend Wayne bought his first pizza franchise and now to this day owns 23 of them.

I managed his second pizza store in Farmington for two years.

The rising of the dough trays left out after being delivered was the hardest part of the job that you could not screw up or forget.

After they trays were put in the walk-in cooler and the volume of business and how much pizza would be sold was very important on the timing as well.

The doughs rising was slowed down by the cooler but if you didn't calculate things right you could waste a lot of money or even run out of the resources to make pizza in the middle of the week.

I had that stuff down back then but wouldn't want to do it again!  The restaurant business is very stressful and handled better by the young!

I'd have to say I like Michael Buble.

It's the classic music that was kept real simple with a simple beat like Johnny Cash's stuff.  And so many other great Artists "Back In The Day"

You know!  The happy stuff

It's the simple stuff when it comes to music that I enjoy the mostYes

Once in awhile I get a wild hair and put in the Rowdy Stuff but not for everyday lessening is my general ruleWink

I get a kick out of these promotional films, mostly from the Post-War years. Always bragging "biggest, best, fastest, high-capacity" machinery and chemistry for the well being of the populace.

Good afternoon Diners, and I trust you are having success in all your projects.

Black tea and Tate and Lyle's Golden Syrup on whole wheat toast please Zoe.

  • Mowing was task one here today, both the riding mower and the electric push mower for the fiddly bits. (Until the battery ran down, which it does far too quickly for my liking Angry) That done, recovering the lost elbow for the northwest corner downspout involved getting out the 4 sections of fibreglass pole which came with our Avalanche snow-on-the-roof clearing kit. That makes up to about 25 feet, which was enough to reach the errant elbow which had been blown to the far southwest corner underneath the deck. Managed to get the thing nudged across and then along the deck until it was ejected, and reinstalled on its downspout to direct flow into the water butt at that coner of the house. Good thing as we've been using water for the garden; and there is a 30% chance of showers tonight. Next up was finding and reinstalling the two trellises which support our delphiniums (spell check suggests felonious, religious and euphonium for those!) Then I got the supports for our peas installed, and called it a day. Mail was brought in by Kris but did not have the hoped for package from DigiKey. So the ditch lights will not be a thing this weekend. Couldn't do them tomorrow afternoon anyway as there is a cross-Canada Zoom call I'm attending. This tablet is not good for Zoom (Android, and I can't see the controls, nor do I get to see thumbnails of all the participants at once) However its about a subject which interests me, so I shall do the best I'm able.

Good evening all.   A coffee please, Janie

I like most types of music.  Listening to Crooners' Radio at the moment.

A family member has just given me a box of old model railway items he was going to throw away.  Been sorting it out.   A lot of not worth having  and is in the trash bin.   Then I came across a small amount of lovely items.   The next time I can get to the train room I shall see how they run.

Dinner  Mushroom & Goats Cheese Burger with Wedges  and Pea Shoot Salad.

Stay Safe Everyone.

TF, I love Tony and Frank and listen to them all the time. Micheal Buble is another favourite and he is a local kid and is very involved and well-loved in the community. The tunnels are lookin good. Finish the inside properly because I guarantee you will run a camera through it one day and will kick yourself if you don't.Laugh

Good call Brent.  I was kind of thinking about that the other day.  All my mountains with tunnels are removable so they can be done at any time is the nice thing.

I really like good O'l Frank too.  I'll have to check out Michael Buble, never heard of him but you sure have my curiosity goingHuh?Yes

Good Morning,

Kevin, I agree with the others, it is a raven. In winter I see them often flying over our house. They don't caw but make a croaking sound and have feathers on their legs. Supposedly they are even smarter than crows.

Errand day today. Showers are expected for most of the day.

I wonder if Ken will come back. I hope so.

Morning from a cloudy West Coast. A few days of rain showers coming our way so I need to get the grass cut today.

The wife and I sure feel great after our high-speed hike yesterday, the dogs were sure tired but they cover a lot more ground on a hike than we do as well as all the swimming they do along the way. They got an extra ration to cover the energy burn.Dinner I usually only eat once a day but may have to have two meals today as the hike burned a lot of coal and my firebox is complaining.Laugh

Enjoying the pics Kevin, too bad there is weather moving in while you are in Seattle maybe it will be far enough North you will get missed.

All the best to all.

Good morning

A good one!  Good call Ray!  Here ya go

I've always liked ravens and their loud caw!  They will call back to you and fly closer.  A curious bird.

A little uncommon but if they split their tongue, perhaps on a soup can lid at the dump, they can talk like a parrot.  We had one like that up north.  I loved that bird, his voice was a trip.

In my old neighborhood in St Louis Park, a raven adopted my childhood friend Missy one day.  He just came down and landed on her shoulder and deciding that he liked her.  Missy loved animals and always had a way with them.  Her and that bird was something else.  That raven was usually waiting for her when she came out of the house in the morning.  If not she would just yell birdy a few times and he would come to her quickly.

There's a Little House on the Prairie episode where an elderly woman had a pet raven.  They are known to usually prefer adopting females.

Google the Crow and Cat.  An interesting video how a raven befriended a cat.  Crow is false terminology for a raven.  The video does not allow to be shared is why I didn't post it.

P.S.   Alan Parsons was the sound engineer for Pink Floyd.  Check out these album cover similarities 18 years apart.

I liked the bus mural BearYes

Gidday Chloe, a large cup of hot chocolate would go down nicely, please.
Gilbert and Sullivan, eh! In my last year of high school, a couple of unlikely lads including myself were dared to take part in the end of school production of “The Yeoman of the Guard”. The challenge was accepted. One of the lads could actually sing and to everyone’s surprise, including himself, got a leading role, whereas the Bear whose singing could be more described as a lusty drone, got the role of 2nd citizen which, from memory, had a few spoken lines and the safety of being in the chorus!!

My daughter has been kept very busy with her new job, but when time permits, is slowly exploring her new locale. Though slightly weathered, she thought I’d be interested in this mural on a bus shelter in Ravensbourne, Dunedin.

Hi Kevin,

I believe that you were looking at a raven. They are fairly common in northern locations. You might actually have been looking at an immature bird because the bill is not as pronounced as it is in most adults. They are beautiful birds. The Indigenous people revere them.

Thanks for all the pictures and your travelogue!

Cheers!!

Good evening everyone.

We have arrived in Washington. Tomorrow we will complete the last little bit of the journey and arrive in Seattle for some time with our baby.

This was the view near our hotel this morning.

At the start of our journey, we stopped and visited Pompey's Tower National Monument. My wife has a lifetime pass to all National Park Service sights, so we stop at lots of these.

OK, look at this pile of junk I saw on the side of the road in Montana. I swear it looks like a cast resin "junk pile" for train layouts. I have never seen a real junk pile that looked like this.

Also, how about this row of junk equipment. I would swear I have seen rows of old equipment like this on dozens of layouts.

And... how about this terrible scenery? It looks like wet plaster soaked paper towels were just draped over plywood formers and painted earth tones. Hardly any gound cover at all, and the scenic form looks terrible. Somebody put no effort at all into this scenery... embarrasing!

Today I made my first stop at a hobby shop this trip. I went to Jim's Junction in Billings Montana.

This was a great stop. This was a small but well stocked hobby shop. It reminded me of Riverdale Station in Atlanta.

Everything in the store was 20% off, and Montana has no sales tax. I got a whole bag full of bargains. The owner was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Before we left Billings, the BURLINGTON NORTHERN SANTA FE made an appearance and posed for this picture.

Thank you for the information about the white pelicans. I had no idea they would be inland like that. Fascinating.

I saw this horror today. It looks like a crow, but it was huge! The size of a hawk. What is this terrifying abnormality?

A bad storm rolled in as we came to the steep mountains. As we climbed to West Yellowstone, Montana the temperature dropped from 90 degrees to 34 degrees in less than 30 minutes, and then it began snowing!

Snow in June? That is insane.

The next two hours of the trip were very slow and scary. We were going down 5% grades in 40 degree weather with rain falling. This was not what I was ready for.

Fortunately all the other drivers on the road were being cautious and courteous, and we all made it through the storm OK.

It just occurred to me... I haver not seen one accident on the roadway since we started this trip. That is good.

We made it to Idaho before the sun went down. It does not look very different from Western Montana.

The hotel in Spokane is wonderful. I was upgraded to a massive suite, and the breakfast service is in full operation for in the morning. I have not had a custom Hilton Garden Inn breakfast in a long time.

The World Is A Beautiful Place.

-Kevin
