FWIW relative to Van Halen's tongue cancer, Eddie Van Halen said that the picks he used and put in his mouth were made of brass and copper.

Didn't know that he was also a metalurgist.  But he thought there was something to it.

I have in-laws and a brother in Atlanta.  My father-in-law, who was raised in North Dakota, often said that with all the trees in Georgia, it was almost impossible to see a sunset like he remembered from his time on the plains.  He enjoyed coming to the farms in Nebraska reminding him of his boyhood.  I don't think he missed the winters, though.

Sure, no place is perfect.  Its a series of trade offs.

I don't know a lot about southern Georgia, but around here it seems like any open place that exists, exists because its been cleared by man at some point in the past few centuries.

The trees are pretty and impressive, but it can sometimes gives me a sense of claustrophobia when I can't see farther than 100 feet around me .

Much different than the plains of Nebraska.

Kevin, with the bathroom done and the doors and windows almost there, is getting the layout started almost a reality?

YES!

I am still seriously hopeful for a start on the layout of January 2021. I don't know what the opposite of a Golden Spike is called, but I am hopefully only 12-14 weeks away from that ceremony.

I have been putting cardboard all over the floors to protect them during the removal of popcorn ceiling, paint, and the windoor/door installation.

This is taking forever.

I have now run out of seam tape. I went through five rolls today!

Off to buy more...

Human papilloma virus can cause oral cancers, as well as booze and cigarettes.  I'll bet he had his share of all three.

My Grandmother who basically raised me had a saying that was instilled in me when I was a little boy.  "If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say it at all".

I've carried that lesson through my life and would especially apply it the day or the day after somebody dies.

But then that's just me and how I was raised.  Good fundamentals are better applied then negative things said

The contractor is supposed to be here next week to install the new front window and sliding lanai doors.

I'll look for old photos of the trip to share if I find them. The train had at least 10 passenger cars and a pair of TSBY GP35's. In Petoskey, we stayed at a restored old hotel. The excursion package included two nights in the hotel, and a day trip to Mackinaw Island via bus and boat. Also, there was time for shopping in Petoskey.

This sounds neat.  As I stated earlier, my wife wants to get me to Mackinac Island in the next few years.  She was there before we were married.

My wife heard the same report about the guitar picks.  She added that smoking, drinking, and whatever else is more likely the culprit.

I need no more convincing here.  I just shared the rumor going around MPLS.

I didn't come up with it.  It probably came from smokers that might make them feel a little betterSmile, Wink & Grin

Good morning everyone.

Flo, it is just one egg on a slice of whole wheat toast for me this morning. I think I will skip the coffee for orange juice as well.

The bathroom looks great Kev  Nice Job!

Thank you. My wife loves it, and that makes my life easier!

I still need to go buy the interior doors. It rained again yesterday. I have been working on putting carboard down over all the flooring in the house. The contractor is supposed to be here next week to install the new front window and sliding lanai doors.

Having a new bathroom is not all that rewarding when it still has a tarp for a door!

I won't state it as fact but I heard the reason Eddie died was from throat cancer from metal poisoning. It was said while he was battling it he stated it was because he always parked his steel guitar pick in his mouth his whole life. You know how rumors can be. I don't know if this information is true but it does make sense.

As a steel guitar player, it doesn't make sense. The finger picks that steel guitar players use are made from nickel-silver. (The thumbpicks are plastic, like regular guitar picks.) If nickel-silver or plastic was a health hazard, I'd think a lot of model railroaders would be getting sick from handling nickel-silver track with plastic ties over the years.

Eddie was a VERY heavy smoker, and chain smoked nearly his entire life. There is no way we could know with certainty what caused his cancer, but I know where I would place my bet.

We also are having an Indian Summer here -- cool mornings, but warming into the 80s in the afternoon. Corn harvest is just starting while harvesting beans has been going on for several weeks.  It's a busy time of year here.  I am in the middle of thousands of square miles of corn and bean fields.  In several weeks, corn will be piled on the ground in many small towns, waiting for empty train cars

Brings back memories John.  Both of my youth in Nebraska and most of my adulthood in Indiana.

Now stuck in the Atlanta suburbs, but these cool fall mornings have already been bringing back wonderful memories.  Thanks for adding more color.

Good morning ...

Ed ....... Thanks for the donuts, and thanks for posting photos and informaton about Petoskey, MI. .... You brought back memories.

Maybe 25 years ago, we rode on a special excursion train operated by a Michigan  Railroad Club. I think it had "Blue Water" as part of it name. The train ride was round trip between Ann Arbor and Petoskey on the Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway. TSBY is now part of Great Lakes Central Railroad. .... At the time, we lived near Ann  Arbor.

I'll look for old photos of the trip to share if I find them. The train had at least 10 passenger cars and a pair of TSBY GP35's. In Petoskey, we stayed at a restored old hotel. The layout has been sitting quietly for several weeks.  I hope to get back to work on it in several weeks.  There is a great looking white church about five miles from our house.  I think I will try to scratchbuild that building.  I'm going to get some pictures of it today.

Ed, thanks for the donuts.  There is always room for glazed donuts.  I don't ever let calories bother me while eating donuts.

Have a good Wednesday, everyone.

Good morning from the beautiful shores of Petoskey, Michigan!

Let's set the wayback machine to 1908, shall we?

 GRnI_Petoskey_1908 by Edmund, on Flickr

Click on the photo, I've kept the relative size of this 8 x 10 glass negative fairly large. Old No. 3 is getting her bell polished. Petoskey is famous for their fossilized coral known as Petoskey Stone formed in the Devonian* period.

The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad generally ran north-south from Cincinnati to the Straits of Mackinac way up in the U.P. The Pennsylvania railroad bought the cash-strapped railroad ten years after the above photo was taken.

Until 1961 the PRR operated the Northern Arrow on this route, a popular train for vacationers. This is pretty close to the view as it is today, looking north, toward the depot:

 Petoskey_view-north by Edmund, on Flickr

Ten-years or so back, there were a few trips here aboard private cars. Somewhere I have a few photos of one of those adventures.

The story is Eddie Van Halen had the guitar Mastered by the age of 13 in high school and probably long before that

He played Eruption from the start and had many versions of it from which he would play.  He fiddled around with his guitars and said the guitar was like a toy to him

He rose to fame quickly and was so young people would call the police on him for flipping hundred dollar bills out at hotels like it was confetti

He was one of the youngest most successful Rock Stars from his start

Long Live Eddie Van Halen!

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk a dog treat.

Far as Eddie Van Halen He could Rock!

Work Front. Got a little good news. We are change the store hours. During the weekdays we where opening at 11:00 AM and closing at 8:00 PM. Other mattress company's open at 10:00 AM. Many of times I have been waitting to turn across traffic to get to my store and seen people leave our parking lot to go eles where because we are not open yet.

After 7:00 PM, nothing! Last month the store had 2 customers after 7:00 PM and neither one bought a thing.

New hours will be from 10:00 AM too 7:00 PM. Much better, if I have a good customer come in at 6:59 I will hang in there to get a sale. (if they want a $100.00 King I am out of there!) Cannot help people I don't see.

Ed I will be calling you in the next few days if that is OK. You back night shift or day shift?

Later, Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof.

Erv looks like a great guy to hang out with.

I went wargaming a couple of times in September and saw a couple of friends I have not been with in months. Nothing like the big wargaming Friday nights of years gone by, but only three or four people now.

Good evening.  We put a lot of miles on the SUV the past two weeks, but we got to see the grandkids in their natural habitats.

Now we are sitting in our house, exhausted.  I think it will take a couple of days to recover from the last several days' driving.  Don't ask me about people who use their phones while driving on the Interstate.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery breaking your mind.  Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

I don't think this is at all political or breaking House Rules.

It was just Erv and me and a little creativity out in Prior Lake on a beautiful day with nothing to do and all day to do it.

It was a joint effort and Erv colors a little wider than me

Ed and Kevin,

Let me add my thanks to both of you for your posts about the Dazor.  Based on what I saw and read, I decided to pick on up for myself from Ebay.  It just arrived and I couldn't be more pleased.  Very sturdy!

Good afternoon Smile

My internet/DSL connection is still intermittent. A service tech is scheduled for tomorrow. I have about 500 feet of underground POTS wire. There could be a problem there.

Happy Tuesday everyone.

Flo, please bring me a couple strips of the bacon that Mr. Beasley mentioned, and I think I will have iced tea this morning instead of coffee.

I need to go buy doors today. It rained for the last three days, so that was not possible. Mulitday rain is such a rare occurance here.

This new storm, Delta, is crazy. It was an unnamed mild storm two days ago, and now it is a compact, well formed, category 4. There are still eight weeks left of Hurricane season. This has been a scary year.

We left for a wedding a couple of small Eastern states away late last week.  Good start to the diner.  Back home now restocking the fridge.  We are out of bacon.  (Hmmmm...do we have some frozen?)

Lovely wedding.  Very high priced.  The big "real" wedding was put off until next year, so they had this mini-wedding this year.
