Howdy ...
It is good to see so many people particpating in the Diner on the first day of them month. Please continue for the rest of the month.
Jeremy ... Sincere condolences for your loss.
Ed .... Interstingly, ATSF continued to use the round end observtion on the short local train. The railroad discontinued observation cars on the Super Chief and other name trains, but not the Clovis train.
Regarding, black widow spiders ... One of my model train friends was nearly killed by one of them. He did spend about two weeks in the hospital at the time, and was in very bad condition.

I traveled through New Mexico last year. The Navajo Nation runs a neat monument where the states of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico meet at one point.
The first picture is the actual point determined by the Department of the Interior, and the second one is when I stood on one foot in all four states at the same time.
It's a little off the beaten track, but if you are anywhere near there, it's a good stop.

Hi Jeremy,
So sorry to hear about your dad, especially since he was so young. My condolences.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

JeremyBthose are some stunning pictures of that black widow, they say we have them here in these parts of onatrio but have never seen one
Thanks Jeremy. My good camera just happened to be in the garage where I keep the wasp killer, so I snapped a few pictures.

For as frequently as I see them down here, I am surprised that I do not know of anyone that has ever been bitten by one.

Living the dream.
New Mexico is great. I love a state where waiters simply ask "red or green" and expect you to know what they are talking about.
I have the right to remain silent. By posting here I have given up that right and accept that anything I say can and will be used as evidence to critique me.

Hi carl425,
Okay, I'll bite! What are they talking about?

Yep! I came across that phrase once upon a time myself.

One of my favorite Jack Delano photos. SO much going on here, and the hints for modeling details. I counted about forty railroad employees, probably more, plus those unseen.

This is the same spot the photo Dave posted on page one was taken. That's a GE U30CG in your photo, Dave.

Correcting my earlier comment.
it was a bite from a brown recluse spider , not a black widow spider, that sent my friend to the hospital.

Thanks Ed,
In hindsight, the answer is pretty obvious.
It is interesting how our tastes have evolved with respect to hot sauce. Our parents might have had a tiny bottle of Tabasco on hand, and it might last for years! My English grandmother also had Worcestershire of course, but it was used sparingly. We saw Tabasco in restaurants decades ago but were too chicken to try it.
Today we always have four or five varieties that are kept on the counter right next to the stove. We buy Frank's Hot Sauce in the largest size available. I put 32 shots of Franks into a 16 oz. Bloody Caesar, plus half a dozen shots of Worcestershire.
We give our son bottles of firey hot sauce for Christmas every year and he loves them.
Something we haven't experimented with much is green hot sauce. I'll have to buy a couple of bottles.
Cheers!!
Roswell, Area 51 yeah I got that wrong.
Still waiting for Comcast to tell me how much they want to charge me for running cable to the house. It is the only provider in my neighborhood, but they have decided I am not in their service area, even though the next door neighbor has it.

That attitude on their part "sucks rail spikes" as Cuda Ken would say! It just sounds like an excuse to gouge you. I suggest that you start by going right to the top of their ladder. Send a polite note to the President of the company. The worst he/she will say is "no". Everything else is progress.
Here is an interesting example of recent investments in New Mexico railroading. Twenty million dollars sounds like a lot of money, but have a look at my next post to get an idea of how much money the railroads spend to stay current!

More later!
Good morning everyone. Flo, I'll take a large cup of joe.
September is shaping up to be an expensive month. Found my garage roof sheathing is getting soft, even without any leaks. Ventilation issue. Seeing the rest of the house roof is getting up there in age, its time. I've got the tools and know how to do it, but what I don't have right now is time. If this were spring, I'd plan on working on it during one of summer's dry spells. This time of year, I need to have it done. I don't have much (any) help available, so the time commitment would be substantial for just me. Winter is too close. Can't take the chance. Then, we have to have some trees taken down. On the plus side here the first place I contacted for a quote came back with a price I was pleasantly surprised with. Then the second place came back with an even better price! I just hope this isn't fate setting me up for a nasty roof quote! Haven't heard back from the roofers yet. It has really surprised me how difficult it has been to get someone to give me a quote for that. So far, I've contacted 4 contractors. One never returned my call, one said no thanks, one came and measured and discussed details, but then never sent a bid. Let's hope the guys that looked at it yesterday come through with a bid. If they don't, I'll be doing some creative reinforcement of my roof until I can get to it next year.
Flo, how about mixing a little something from the bar in that coffee. I think I need it.

They had to run somewhere once they were pulled off the mane lion. Seems like a good train to run them on.

I camped near Santa Fe once. I really like it in that area, The thing that always got me was that you could see for miles. At the camp gorund we were 25 miles from the interstate, yet you could see it way off in the distance. That mountian that look like it was "just over there" was a day's drive.
Jeremy, I am sorry for your loss.

That 1943 photo is indeed a great shot. I have a few questions about the details it contains. Would it be appropriate to ask them here or would you post the picture to the prototype blog for discussion?
Thanks,

Late to the model railroad party but playing catch-up.....
When I returned from Tampa yesterday, I noticed a lot of yard signs in the neighborhood. I drove up and down a few streets and noticed no fewer than 15 "For Sale" or "For Rent" signs have popped up in front of houses.
Looks like a lot of people will be leaving, and new people moving in. I hate when that happens. We have enjoyed several years of a really good set of neighbors and no neighborhood drama.
Things can only get worse.
I know I should not be such a pessimist.

Green, every time.
Speaking of green, we would be remiss if didn't stop in Hatch, New Mexico for some green chiles. Unfortunately, the annual Hatch Valley Chile Festival has been cancelled this year. (It would have been this weekend.) Be sure to add it to your itinerary next year.
Richard
We stopped and ate at this place in Cimarron, New Mexico. My wife was reluctant to eat, but it was great food.

We have amayroal race going on this year we said one candidate that was running a close second to For Sale, according to yard signs.
RideOnRoadGreen, every time.
I go for green on pork or chicken and red on beef. Both are awesome.
It could be a good thing. There have been news stories about how hot the current Florida real estate market is. People who are tired of the taxes and other issues in Northeast cities are looking for somewhere else to settle.
This should be good for Florida's economy, as money comes in.

Good call, Tim.
I'll start a thread in the Prototype heading later this evening. I'd like to "crop & zoom" some of the details. I'm sure there will be others interested in commenting.
I have a fairly large "Union Station on my layout. One detail I completely missed shown in the Delano photo was how many carts loaded with laundry bags are there. I have plenty of baggage carts in my station but none loaded with Pullman laundry
Hello all! This is my first time joining in the diner. Where my girlfriend used to live in wisconsin, there is a diner that was bought and shipped from pennsylvania in 2 peices! Also sits next to the abandoned CNW trackage.
Great setting to join in at. On a family road trip to California, we drove through new mexico and it had by far the best views! The landscape was simply incredible. It was weird to pace a BNSF train in the median of an interstate!
Great photos and videos. One can get lost in the amazement of New Mexico.
I don't have any real life pictures of the Santa Fe so heres my newest engine, FVM GP60
Looking forward to talking to you all in the coming months. Are there any rules I need to know about?
