I get why MTH tried the DCS route. They knew already that tech. To MTH, it made perfect sense.

But the fact they didn't try to make a fully DCC compatible unit is what turned me off. I have a very limited model train budget, and could not then nor now afford a system that only works with one companies offerings.

That is also why I don't use the Blue-toothed Bachmann units. I can not afford to convert my existing fleet over to that system either. (If you even can.) I went DCC early on in my model train layout building and purchases, and will stick with DCC until I get rid of model trains.

If something is not 100% DCC Compatible, and can not be converted easily and inexpensively, than I don't buy it and have zero interest in it.

So, while I am not too affected, I do feel bad for those who love MTH products. Especially O gauge folks, as the O line from MTH is very well done. If they don't find a buyer, that is the area that will be hurt the most.

I wonder how many of the responders here actually read Mr. Wolf's letter? He says he is looking at options to keep the company going, including turning it over to current employees:

Finally, I want to thank all of my employees for their hard work over the years. Most of them have been with me for decades and their loyalty and talents were paramount to our success.

With thousands of tools and molds and a wealth of intellectual property, a new model railroading company may arise from my former company as I entertain various options and buyers. One scenario is a new company organized and owned by members of my current staff. Their decades of experience, work ethic, and creative talent will ensure success regardless of who owns the assets while providing a welcome bridge between the past 40 years and the future.

It also sounds like Mr. Wolf appreciates the support he has received form his buyers and suppliers:

M.T.H. Electric Trains would not have enjoyed success without the support of the M.T.H. Authorized Retailer network. While traditional retail has changed significantly over the past decade, the independent hobby shop has been and continues to be the most important cog in our distribution chain. I truly appreciate the support and friendship these shops have shown M.T.H. I wish all of them good luck and prosperity in the years to come.

And it sounds like he has thought this process through and is simply not locking the door and walking away.

The remainder of my time will be busy as we clear out inventory and other miscellaneous items accumulated over the past 40 years. As that process evolves, we’ll be offering consumer and retailer purchase opportunities

Something else to consider is the serious loss of advertising revenue to the hobby press. I imagine MTH ad budget probably ran ten-grand a month if not more.

I think the guy deserves a little credit. I've witnessed a lot worse plant/business closing scenarios.

Cheers, Ed

Since nobody here has any inside information not already in MTH's public announcement, MTH's Mike Wolf isn't here to answer these questions and accusations, and there's no benefit to further uninformed speculation and second-guessing, this thread will be locked.
