Kevin: "Show me something else painted at least two colors."

I've used this photo before, but it was handy.

How about a string of New York Central "Pacemaker" box cars?

More multi-colored railroad cars, please.

1954 is not known as a colorful time in railroading, but the new STRATTON AND GILLETTE "Comet Frieght" TOFC service trailers do have some color to them.

Of course it can be more than one color Ed.  I seen one of those cars in Red Wing before things all started.  I only wish I had one of those Canadian rainbow railroad cars.

My Imgur site is on the fritz or I'd have a colorful car to post.

Please excuse my Interruption and continue with the regular scheduled program here.

Another rail car in an interesting color.

I think the Magenta 86' Hi-Cubes of the DT&I qualify!

Ordered for service to the Woodhaven Stamping Plant, at the time all cars painted this color were assigned to that plant.

This has no grounding in reality but I needed a view block for the incline at the back of the layout so I ran the main line through the building. This is only started but you can get the idea.

Show me something else made to fit a scene

I've always been fascinated with buildings constructed over trackage (air rights) as in New York City and even in my native Cleveland, Ohio.

With that in mind I built a "Postal Annex" as we had such a structure here in Cleveland:

Something more you made or bashed into what you wanted.

I made this tank depot from a Lionel O-27 tank car and four Lionel trestle pieces, plus a whole lot of evergreen plastic.

It is actually a piece of wargaming terrain for Warhammer 40K, but it made a good prop for train photos. This piece has now been donated to the store terrain collection at Darkside Comics and Games in Sarasota, Florida.

Show me another creation you made.

I have a Kiskiminetas Junction on my railroad. I wonder if they are related?

I believe so, Ed.  The railroad is located in Schenley, PA, and is near where the Kiskiminetas River joins the Allegheny River.

As far as I'm aware, the railway is not currently in operation, as there's an embargo on the bridge which connects it to Norfolk Southern.

...Please show another car made of wood.

This "wood" express horse car is built on a Rivarossi coach, using the underbody, ends and roof, with new sides of Evergreen car siding.  It's based on a photo of the real one, and is almost dead-on for length...

The 8907 turned out so well that I decided to continue making similar head-end cars using cheap and readily available plastic passenger cars.

This one was formerly an Athearn Pullman, and also replicates its prototype...

...as does this former Athearn coach...

I have several more freelanced versions for my own railroads, and plans to create several more based on photos of real cars.

Ed: ... The NYC caboose is very nice.

My previous layout modeled the 1900 era. I saved many of the wooden passneger cars and freight cars.

The baggage car in this picture is an example. It was a Labelle kit which I put together many years ago. I recently added a 1900 era scene to my layout which is mostly 1960 era. This photo is from that.

Please show another car made of wood.

Please show me a kit YOU built , that had to be "fixed/ modifyed/ or altered in some way.

This covered hopper was built from a Funaro And Camerlengo kit for a "Carbon Black" hopper car, but I wanted a more general service car. I replace the roof hatches with resin castings for square hatches and completely scratch built new release doors for the bottom of the car.

That's sweet Wayne!  I never have seen the four-axle ones, only the six and that's all I have.  I do remember some unique ones where separate axle trucks went out beyond the other axles on the outside ends of the cars.

I would like to get my hands on a few of those and if anyone can show a picture of those, that would be cool.

Forgive my Interruption and back to our regularly scheduled program.

Hi, Wolf. They were imported by Crown Custom, sometimes known as Railworks, and are brass models.

I watched for almost a year before one was available at a "decent" price.

There are some photos of the car in service here. (Scroll down)

Here's the wye at Airline Junction, formerly part of the Erie Northshore Interurban line....

Another turntable, please

This one was scratchbuilt, using a block of wood, a couple of Atlas through-girder bridges off the "used" table at my former LHS, and a beater shaft from an old electric mixer....

The handrails use stanchions from Athearn diesels, while the ring rail is cut from a piece of Atlas flex track, with the pit floor the cut-out plywood, with pit walls made from 1/8" Masonite....

Total cost was my time and a couple of bucks, as pretty-much everything else was stuff that I had on-hand, not being used or intended for anything in particular.
Table rotation is manual, with indexing by the Mark II eyeball method.

IAIS 6988 is a Chinese locomotive that has been Americanized, and the same is true of my model.  It started out as a Bachmann China QJ and I removed the shroud around the stack, built a new feedwater heater (since the molded on on wasn't very good and wasn't going to survive the shroud removal process anyway), plugged the old headlight mounts on the front, added an American headlight, class lights, bell, and whistle, and added a bit of plumbing that wasn't really visible before, and a bunch of various other details, plus of course the paint job and custom decals

My old number 3 (now number 7) started as a Bachmann On30 Forney:

It's had the rear end chopped off and replaced with a scratchbuilt tender, and the front shortened to make it an 0-4-0.

Please show me more modified engines.

Wow! You're very talented with these scratchbuilds and kitbashes. If I may go off topic from the thread for a moment, how did you scratchbuild your tender? What materials and techniques did you use? I've been thinking about building an auxiliary tender for one of my steamers for quite some time now, but I've never been entirely sure of the best way to go about it. I'd also like to say that I've really enjoyed all the photos everyone has posted so far. Keep 'em coming!

Please show another customized or modified locomotive.

Here's an old Akane USRA 2-10-2 (the tender is from Bachmann)...

...and here's the same loco, re-worked into a pretty-decent representation of one of 10 that the CNR bought, used, from the B&A...

I had a couple of Bachmann's nice-running 10 Wheelers...

...but thought them a little too old fashioned -looking for my late '30s-era railroad, so upgraded them to look like this...

This IHC Mogul, based on an Espee prototype, I think, got dolled-up a bit when I first got it...

...but later got a full makeover...

I don't have a photo of this Proto USRA 0-8-0 "stock" form, as I had intended to get rid of it due to it's extremely limited pulling abilities, but after addressing that issue, I stripped it down completely, lengthening the front of the frame to accommodate the CNR-style front end treatment, and completely replaced all of the undersize piping to match a photo of a CNR prototype.  I also managed to add weight to it, correcting the otherwise anemic performance...

Great job on the Tyco car carrier. Your paint job looks much more realistic than the original toyike orange and black plastic. The buicks are a knockout!

Tim, thank you for the kind comments. Those Buicks are the reason that freight car exists. My wife saw the beautiful Buick models and she said that they needed to be on my layout. Unfortunately, they are 1955 models, and my layout is set in 1954.

I decided an open car carrier would make them work. They are on the way to the dealership for the September presentation of the new model year.

I added a lot of detail to the auto carrier, and I am very happy with it.

Kevin asked for the Letter "D".

I think all the "D's" in DT&I Qualifies.

How about the Letter "E"

Rule 1: This is my railroad.

Rule 2: I make the rules.

Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!
