German food
Gasthof Zur Gemutlicherkeit is simply the best German restaurant in the Minneapolis area.
My reaction the first time there was what's not to love. Surprisingly they are not overpriced, they have live accordion music playing and great German beers on tap.
German pastries
Edelweiss in my original hometown of Prior Lake. They opened not too long ago.
There German pastries are to-die-for, moist and melts in your mouth. I have never tasted better.
It might even be good they're closed for a while. We could'nt stay away, we were down there three times in one month.
They have inside seating and if you don't get there early in the morning the line goes out the door and down the sidewalk.
I am going through restaurant withdrawals

Probably this one in one of its' former iterations.
The name and patrons change but the ambiance is the same.
We had a great German restauraunt in the town next to us. It was in the CFO's family home. One time we were there and she remarked that she was uncomfortalbe because we were eating dinner in her parents bedroom. Top that! It is closed now but would have been a great oppourtunity for Ulrich and Petra. We took one of my drivers there who had spent a ton of time in Germany and he said the food was authentic. Like Mr. Beasley we couldn't eat there often if we wanted to avoid becoming diabetic. They tore out all the paneling and a lot of the original house to make it a Tapas place but that went under in a couple of months.
So after 6 hours of Donald Duck did you become Daffy Ulrich?
Off to the basement and the sub station. No, not New London. Ciao, J.R.
York1I remember hearing thatthe same was true of sausage factories.
Someone who grew up in farm country told be the same thing about pickle (India) relish. I can't imagine why, nor understand the comments on French bakeries, but having only been in Paris once, I did not care for some of the street smells, which were definitely sewerage.
Now that I have ruined everyone's appetite, my wife made codfish croquets. They were good, but I grew up eating Coddies, a potato, salted fried codfish cake that was a Baltimore delicacy. I've looked at recipes that say they are not codfish cakes, but I don't see the difference. Codfish, mashed potatoes, spices, fried and served with mustard on saltine crackers.

On a whole different topic, I wonder if you long-time diner patrons remember a diner forum that was already on its fourth page on the second day of the month?

Tinplate ToddlerMy travels took me into all 4 corners of the world and I had to eat things I didn´t how to pronounce, let alone know what it was or what was in it. Some of that stuff was really tasty and I wouldn´t let anybody spoil that taste by telling me what I just had.
The same was true of Louisiana "Gumbo". It tasted great, but if you didn't cook it, you didn't ask what was in it.

Tinplate ToddlerNo, thank you! If you ever come to Paris, go for a walk along Rue de Belville very early in the morning, just before the shops open. You will be able to get a view on French bakeries which will make you never enter one of them in your life.

MisterBeasleyThe only German restaurant I ever ate at was in Huntsville, Alabama.
The only German restaurant I have been to is in Epcot Center! I do enjoy that restaurant a lot. It used to have the distinction of being the only place in the Walt Disney World Resort that you could buy beer! That has changed.
I went to a German bakery once.
French bakeries are so much better there is not a number big enough to describe the difference!
TOP OF THE PAGE! Everyone have a delicious French Pastry on me!

Living the dream.
Tinplate Toddler If we were 10 years younger, we would move to US and open a German food place. I bet this would be a winner!

And I would eat there, if only occasionally as my diabetes allowed it.
The only German restaurant I ever ate at was in Huntsville, Alabama. It may have been a carry-over from the German rocket scientists from WW2, who helped get the US rocket program going. I tried speaking my limited high school German to the staff, but quickly realized that no one in the restaurant other than me spoke any German at all. Good food and beer, though.

Tinplate Toddler6 hours of good old Donald Duck!
6 hours of Donald? Sounds like someone is Goofy.
Post Hog Post Hog
You Know, ... I just love my Judy to death. But over three weeks together can become a little trying sometimes.
She has dragged me into her spring cleaning craze. I have never realized how many clothes I have before now. She's having me go through them.
keep pile, work pile, donate pile, throw away pile........ I have favorite work shirts that are not suitable for anybody to wear let alone me and I'm wondering why I kept them
I did two drawers so far and I'm taking a break.
Next I have to go through my good clothes drawer, dress clothes. I told her I only go in this drawer once a year. She asked me why. I told her because I'm not good, I don't like dress clothes.
Tinplate Toddler Edit: I am starting to become a post hog

I used to think I was good at it but you are the champion my friend
SeeYou190This is nothing like being in prison.
German prisons are much different than yours. Single rooms, each room with TV, small groups eating together - more like a holiday camp. And they can go outside into the prison garden!
Track fiddlerI bet you two are getting everything that's not being used right now very well organized and labeled.
Actually, about half of our stuff is destined for the dump. We are getting rid of so many things that have not been touched for years, as moving them will cost a fortune and a half. Lots of books, which our library doesn´t want, clothing, and myriad of little things which should have been thrown away first place. We will also donate some of our furniture - providing someone wants and will pick it up. No, we are not victims of the tiny house craze which swept through the US and Europe, but it is sometimes cheaper to dispose of stuff and buy anew if the need arises.
Petra and I are pretty well seasoned movers. We have moved 7 times in our marriage, mainly due to my job taking me places. This time will be different, though (should we ever get to making that move to Denmark). My back won´t allow me to lift heavy things, so we will have to hire professional services for the job.
gmpullmanLocomotive engineer in California runs his engine and x-number of cars through the end-of-track to draw attention to his claims of nefariousness regarding the USNS Mercy hospital ship?
I saw that on the 5:00 AM early news this morning, and thought I was hearing things.
The report said the engineer drove his train off of the tracks and steered it towards the USS Mercy, and stopped only 250 yards from the ship.
I was thinking I must have misheard this... what kind of locomotive can be steered off of the track and driven towards a target?
Better news reports surfaced later that explained it a bit better.
Crazy.
Tinplate Toddler Going for a walk is a no no, with a $500 fine attached.
Going for a walk is a no no, with a $500 fine attached.
That all sounds just terrible. I hope there is a positive side of things like Petra's incredible cooking. I gotta tell you, some of those meals and pastries you have talked about have made my mouth water from thousands of miles away
I bet you two are getting everything that's not being used right now very well organized and labeled. So many years ago, the last time Judy and I moved we were in such a scrambled mess. We didn't know what was what unpacking.
Ironically she pulled out boxes in the back of the closet from our last move yesterday. Some of the stuff we had forgot about and it was like getting a Christmas present. She is in her spring cleaning mode so a lot of it she threw away.
One of the things was my Greatland Express Train that runs around the Christmas tree that she wanted to add to the donation box. That was one of the spats that was short lived
Not being able to go for a walk and a 500.00 fine sounds awfully harsh Ulrich. We are lucky here, they are not enforcing most of the things on the shut down, especially travel restrictions.
The only thing they are starting to enforce which I seen yesterday on the nightly news. Teenagers are ducking the roped off areas at parks. They are playing basketball and other activities in groups.
It was said on the news last night they are going to start handing out $1,000 fines to the parents of the minor children. For now I understand the police are just verbally breaking up the groups as a warning. I would think the chance of getting a $1,000 fine may get the parents attention.
"Stange Days Indeed"
In the mid 1990s, my wife, three daughters, and I took a several week trip to Alaska and northern Canada.
We left Vancouver on a ship, got off at Skagway, Alaska, and rode the White Pass and Yukon railroad into British Columbia. The train went further, but we got off at Frasier, BC, and took a bus to Whitehorse and eventually to Yukon City.
I don't have pictures, but I got this off a video we took. Sorry for the quality, it's the best I can do.
We had just gotten off the cruise ship and were ready to board the White Pass.
Steven OtteTomorrow is my 55th birthday
Happy birthday sir! I am only a couple-three years behind you.
York1It's gotten cold, cloudy, and they're predicting snow starting this afternoon. It's not easy to take after several days of nice weather.
We had a "Cold Front" go through last night, and the overnight temperature dipped into the 60s. We will only get up to the mid 80s today.
At least the front broke the heat wave we were having. We just had six days of record-breaking high temperatures.
Track fiddlerJudy and I had quite the spat yesterday and the day before. It was over nothing and short-lived. We realized how ridiculous it was right away afterwards. It is extremely rare for Judy and I to ever fight.
Yesterday my wife stole an 18-city farm from me in a game of Carcasonne, and we did not get into a fight. That was right after she conquered me in a game of chess. If we can live through that peacefully I am sure all of us can do it!
Tinplate Toddler We feel like being imprisoned.
This is nothing like being in prison. That point of view is similar to the people down here saying this is like going through a Hurricane... NO IT IS NOT! This is dream living compared to prison or a Hurricane.
Cheer up, spend time with your loved ones if you are fortunate enough to be "imprisoned" with your better half. I am, and we are loving it.
York1I didn't know someone made such a tiny live steam model. Very neat!
Only 5 of the OO9 scale live steam engines were built by the British craftsman Brian Caton a few years ago. Gerd was lucky to be able to buy one, but it certainly didn´t come cheap.
TF - Fortunately, Petra and I didn´t have a fight, but we came close to it. She made a actually quite trivial remark about something absolutely unimportant and I just wnt off like a safety valve. Just made it around the bend before an argument could have been started. We have such a long bucket list to work down prior to any move, but we are just condemned to do nothing. I have so many things that are supposed to go to the dump, but that place is closed to the public right now. Going for a walk is a no no, with a $500 fine attached. We feel like being imprisoned.
With lots of time to waste, how´s that:
6 hours of good old Donald Duck! He is a bit like me!
Steven! All the best wishes!
Tinplate ToddlerHere is how my southern German friend Gerd keeps himself busy:
That is a pretty amazing video. I thought it was some kind of kit, but reading the comments, I found out that he made the entire setup after buying the steam locomotive. I didn't know someone made such a tiny live steam model. Very neat!
Tinplate Toddler It´s not only I who is getting edgy Steven - mind if I have one of each? And two of the last item?

Ulrich, ...I can certainly relate to you. Judy and I had quite the spat yesterday and the day before. It was over nothing and short-lived. We realized how ridiculous it was right away afterwards. It is extremely rare for Judy and I to ever fight.
Neither one of us knew where this came from.
Two of the last item?? And I know that as well is extremely rare and so unlike you. But in this day and age I can say I certainly understand.
Keep your chin up, we will all have better days ahead
P.S. Is that what they call snap track? Steam Loco Layout in a box. That's pretty neat!
Steven. A day early but I never know if I will get to the diner or not. That stew looks too good to pass up and the last two for later if you please.
Good thing that locomotive didn't have steering. As someone else said, the engine driver had a loco motive..... J.R.

Happy birthday, Steven. I was your age once.
It's gotten cold, cloudy, and they're predicting snow starting this afternoon. It's not easy to take after several days of nice weather.
I'm waiting for some things to dry, and will then work on the layout again. I've been watching ruruns of the TV show "Monk". I didn't watch it when it was first run, but have now gotten to like it 10 years later.
Have a good day, everyone.
Good Afternoon!
A truly boring day! Nothing to do, nowhere to go to, just stay put and wait, wait, wait! It´s not only I who is getting edgy these days. I pity the parents with little children, being locked up in a high-rise apartment house, not being able to go outside! I also feel for all the elderly people who are effectively locked up, like in a prison, not being able to go for a little walk in the sunshine. I hope that theis madness ends soon!
Here is how my southern German friend Gerd keeps himself busy:
Stay safe!
Thanks
They all look good
Can I have a sampler of all four and the last two?
Happy Birthday Steven

Thank you for your service, Sir!

Welcome to Thursday! Or, as I call it, Friday. Tomorrow is my 55th birthday , and I'm taking the day off. I'll still be monitoring the Forums, though, so be on your best behavior. In the meantime, though, we could all use some comfort food. So take your pick.
