That's the kitty Ja Bear. Thanks. I got to staand on the slider plate and observe as we ran the line up and back. Had a little more room on the way back as the other two passengers had had enough. A memorable experience and we were double headed that day as well as they were shaking down the second engine having just shopped it.
Did some more with the backdrop wall but I think I will go back to the panelling for most of it instead of the lightweight plastic display board I used. We shall see.

A few posts up were some comments related to Canadians. I am obliged in spirit to chime in, having never said verbally much of what will follow, let alone on a forum.
I grew up in Michigan and my dad, who wasn't home a lot, would take us to Canada on occasions. Early remembrances were of the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit (also went through the Windsor Tunnel a couple of times) and the Blue Water Bridge between Sarnia and Port Huron. There's still a photo of my older brother and sister arguing over who would get to look at the ore boats through one of those drop-in-a-dime binocular machines. For three summers during junior high years, my dad arranged at least three days of productions and events at the Shakespearean Festival in Stratford, Ontario. Then some few years ago we went with friends for three days in Victoria, BC.
In all, I have always found Canadians to be more than friendly, helpful and gracious folks. The same applies to all the interactions that go on with them on this forum. The only wrench worth noting that has been thrown at that has been the recent requirement to fork over a passport at the border. But I suspect that even that hasn'y replaced the time-honored "Where were you born, sir? Here for business or pleasure? How long are you staying? Have a great time and welcome to Canada!" Frankly, that hasbeen a "rite of passage" (pun intended) that I have always looked forward to.
I will grant that no nation is without its jerks and curmudgeons. But that aside, if I ever run across a Canadian in any distress whatsoever, I'll have his or her back in a heartbeat. There's a common heritage of goodwill that I grew up with and I'm stickin' to it. And, while we're at it, there's been a lot of pretty good junior hockey here in Portland oer the years. When I attend and the Winterhawks are entertaining a Canadian team, I also remain standing with hand over heart for 'O Canada". Bless you all, folks to our north.

I've only been a subscriber to the magazine for about three years and on this forum for two years.
I have enjoyed it, and I like the fact that I have met people online who share my hobby.
I know that if some of us talked in person, we'd probably find things we don't like about each other.
That's why I appreciate Steven O. stopping certain topics. It keeps us focused on what we have in common. We have a group from different countries, political parties, ages, religious or non-religious, education levels, and economic status. With all that, it's a group that we can call friends.
Another thread I enjoy is the Weekend Photos. There are some super-talented modelers there, and there are some like me. Everyone is encouraging and helpful. You don't find that in too many other places.

Well said Jim, I would never complain about anything that is free and could not imagine doing so. I have had issues logging on lately and still do but I don't waste my time with it, if I can't log on with coffee in hand I click on one of the Victoria Secret pop-ups instead.
I really appreciate being able to pop in here when this old man needs to sit down for a rest. Also thank you Steven Otte for keeping us on the straight and narrow.

From some between the lines comments from our hosts several posts back, I'm getting a feeling that Kalmbach management may (emphasis MAY) be looking at the forums to evaluate whether the company would even want to support them anymore. If so, they would be looking at the trade off of benefit to the hobby (read resultant sales) as opposed to cost of maintaining these forums. IF we want the priveledge of being able to exchange information and ideas here, which I for one do enjoy, it would be in our interests to appreciate them. As someone once said, if you don't like it here, someone will be listening. For what it's worth.

Gyprock is an Australian product, but different areas of the country call things by different names.
CNCharlieMy gouse has stonelathe covered in plaster.
Stone lath is a panel that's used as a backer to thin set, or manufactured brick and stone, or plaster and stucco finish. I use a mesh panel that is very similar when I veneer the face of a "zero clearance" type refab fireplace, with thin set stone, or brick panels.
Different locations = different names.
I hope every one East survived the big drenching that left the midwest area. We were about 2" of rain short for the month, but very quickly caught up.
There was a member in here, for awhile, from Newfoundland, I think his name was something like "Oldschoolscratchbuild", something like that. He did things "different".

I had never heard of the word sheetrock until a few years ago when talking to my friend in Minnesota. Up here we call the stuff gyprock. My house has stonelathe covered in plaster. The 2 add up to about an inch thick. Stonelathe is a very heavy type of wall board. Makes for a quiet house though.
Very warm today. Supposed to hit 65F! Will take the cover off the AC. That will result in a temp reversal for sure. Hope to get some lawn raking done. We are weeks away from any thoughts of mowing.
The Juncos have departed but we have a few Song Sparrows that do have a nice song.
Dave, Ontario is fine with me. Long ago I lived in Barrie, London and Sarnia plus a a few years in Rainy River which is little town in NW Ont. Rainy River was a CN division point and the home to 4008, a 2-10-2 on display there since 1960.

Those that worked with you and considered that we were a team for the good of our students I liked. Those that thought all other school employees were just peons for them to rule... Not so much. Several of my long term close friends even today belong to the first bunch!
Oh, I might add that some School Board members saved my neck (career) on more than one occasion when I was not on good terms with a particulaly nasty Superintendent... Several just happened to be parents of some of my Boy Scouts. Their sons also earned Eagle (and I do Mean Earned!) way back when.... I was told about what happened in "Executive Session" after I was accused of something by the Super...... Made me smile and chuckle a bit, it did!

Anyway, good morning all. Not much going on here today, the weather is supposed to be good today. Things are changing at work for the good.
Making progess getting things repaired and ready to leave basement. 1937 Philco working and about to be reassembled. 1930 Atwater Kent, waiting on parts. I fixed my $10 Goodwill record player so I can have tunes in the basement again. I play lots of 78s and this machines does that great.
I prob will need to mow again tomorrow since we have had all this rain the past few days. I don't mind mowing, it is kind of a therapy.

I went and did my weekly grocery shopping at 6am this morning. The "Friendly" market in Waterloo where I shop has hours for seniors and other "impaired" folks two days a week from 6am to 8am. Looks like Thursday may be the best for me as it was almost completely empty when I was there. Tuesdays are a lot more folks in there shopping.

Yep! I was in the diner when some flamable, against the "rules" stuff was posted. I was wondering how long before Vinnie got up and cleaned house. Personally I have been to a few of the other sites and like this one much, much more. If I want to fight with people, I could just go back to teaching and deal with some less than adult adults... (Some teachers and , of course, certain administrators, parents, etc.).
I have been trying to get the next NMRA Division "Extra" newletter finished and to the website. Seems the easier it appears the more time I spend to make changes to please other "humans!" LOL It will contain a short article from a very well known MR Author (whose name I will not mention), who has around 1,000 articles published. A couple other people seem to want to rewrite his article for him! Several of the changes wanted, I know that the author was totally correct in his wording, but....... I have refused to make some of the suggested changes. We shall see what we shall see, I guess. I'll be sending what, I hope, will be the final copy to them in a bit. I should say that most of the changes I am requested to make in articles are absolutely correct and are often just a screwup that I make (in cut & paste) and typos.

They are Tim Horton donuts. I had many of those on many trips to Canada during my working years. I like Canada and Canadians very much.
I think I read we are considering Ontario for our May location. I approve. I would prefer the entire province instead if just one city in Ontario.

All the oak trees in the neighborhood dropped their seeds last night. It looks like tumbleweed in front of my home this morning and 2" of rain are in the forecast.
Twitter abslutely makes my blood boil, nothing I've ever seen on this forum even comes close to moving the needle off 0.

Good Morning All,
49F and rainy today. Not much to report on the layout front except I started on some more backboard for the area behind the yard. I have a basic U with a 3' isle up the center. the back wall of the basement is two sides of the backing and one side and one end are open. I hung cheap panelling on hinges behind one long section to close it off where it opened onto the rest of the basement and have had the rest open around the yard while I figured out what to do. I had an old shower door on a slider so I fit that next to the column where the table wraps around and then fit a piece of display board painted with the generic overcast sky color. I couldn't hinge that part since it would interfere with the long panel sections so it just slides back out of the way. I tried some display board for the long bits but I can still see the ribs through the paint so I may need to break down and get some thing better. I don't see filling and sanding a 4 x 8 sheet of anything if it's avoidable. Pics when I get done.

As has been noted there are other websites with fewer restrictions but I like the degree of civility offered by those same restrictions as opposed to the flame throwing that occurs "out there". I have always been able to find the answers i need on this forum and in fact if it wasn't for the patience shown me over a few weeks of struggling, I still wouldn't have a working yard. This forum can hardly be a profit center for Kalmbach and anyone in the publishing business can tell you that times are not flush. Bottom line, I will spend time here as available and not worry about it. I no longer participate in anything else trainwise and the rest of my presence online is to do with my work in racing.
GArry, you asked about the pics from the old layout and I fear they are lost to the wilds of Photobucket along with the pics from vacations and the first couple of trips "down under" including the cab ride i got in New Zealand.

I think my layout town needs a bank, so I'm going to start building one today. I have plenty of plastic, windows, etc. I'll probably make up a paper or cardboard version first to make sure of the measurements.
I have no preference on where the diner travels tomorrow. I've never been to Newfoundland.

GMTRacing We never had a problem with the mess and dust. Workmen leaving debris all over inside and out when they were "finished", yes. I always expected "broom clean" and sometimes had to say something.
The guys that installed the new tub left the bathroom SPOTLESS! The bare cement floor is absoltely dust free in there.
It was bad when they got there becuase I pulled the tile up, and thinset dust was everywhere. Very good. Things are moving forward.

Anyway, there are a number of model railroading forums available, which work much better, are also free and are way more interesting and entertaining as this one. As others have noted before me, this forum has lost a lot of its appeal over the years. The reason why I am still participating is more out of a habit, but lately I have come to think of it as a bad habit. If it were not for the handful of virtual friends which I can meet here, I´d consider it a waste of time!
