I hope there isn't a paywall here.

I remember reading this story in Trains Magazine. I saw the 1401 a few years later. They had a decent sound decoder in her. I remember the speakers were cleverly hidden and the appropriate sounds came from the respective source, ie ringing from the bell, air pump sounds from the compressor, etc.

I understand the sound system is no longer functioning. They should try a reset Whistling

Carling O'keefe was bought out by Molsons.

With all the merger/acquisitions in the brewing industry there may as well be one global brewing company. Well, it seems it's getting that way at least.

If you dig deep enough you'll find that some (many) of the "craft" brewers are owned by the mega corporate brewers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molson_Coors_Brewing_Company

There's lots of contract brewing, too. Hard to keep up with all the big corporate takeovers and buyouts. Sad that they have to mess with our BeerBeerBeer

South of the border? The biggest, Anheuser-Bush-InBev is headquartered in Belgium. #2 is Heineken (Netherlands) 3. China Snow Breweries, 4. Carlsburg (Copenhagen), then Molson-Coors. The next four are Asian, then French.

The last time I visited Ontario, I came home with a trunk full of Brick Lager. I guess they are called Waterloo now? At one time they made Red Cap Ale. I remember seeing that as a kid with the distinctive "baseball" cap you could open without a "church key". Carlings had a big brewery here in Cleveland, served by the Nickel Plate Railroad.

Charrigton Toby! That was a favourite of mine too.

Carling O'keefe was bought out by Molsons. I just sent them a note asking if they might consider resurecting the brew. I think it would do quite well up against the myriad of Microbrewery offerings that are out there today. I have tried many of them, but they never quite seem to equal Charrington Toby in taste.

Dave, Charrigton Toby! That was a favourite of mine too.  After I moved to Manitoba I'd always pick up a twofour whenever I was back in Ontario. I like Alexander Keiths too but I've always preferred ale over lager.

I was a commuter student so my food was home cooking.

I stayed at university even during the school breaks except for a few days at Christmas. My mother's cooking was often worse than the school cafeteria!

I always had survival rations in my room. They consisted of caraway rye bread, specifically 'Jane Parker' brand from the Atlantic and Pacific Grocery Company(A&P), and Cheeze Whiz accompanied by copious quantities of Charrington Toby beer. Few North American beers taste good at room temperature. Charrington Toby was so good that I never had a fellow resident refuse one (or three) because it wasn't cold. Of course, the prospect of free beer will overcome many obstacles.

Alas, 'Toby' was discontinued years ago, partly thanks to the influx of cheap beer from south of the border. I miss it enormously. I loved the taste. With all due respect to my American friends, I won't have American style beer in the house. Now it's Coronas or Alexander Keith's.

There, that ought to light some fires!Smile, Wink & Grin

Sports - The first SuperBowl game was between Green Bay and Kansas City, so let’s get them both back into it for the 100th NFL season. (Counting before SB era as well there.) GO PACK GO! (State Farm Insurance Bowl anyone?!?)

That would be a good game!  I'll take the Chiefs.

I lived in New Orleans in 1975, and the Super Bowl was to be played in the Superdome.  But the dome was not finished, so the game was moved to Tulane Stadium (Sugar Bowl).

Tickets were easy to get, and my friend asked if I wanted to go with him.  It was cold and rainy that day, and I said no.  The Steelers beat the Vikings.

That was before tickets were thousands of dollars and were sold only to select people.

Good (windy) evening all.

Flo - How about a big RBF tonight. Thanks.

Larry (Brakie) - Glad your getting the bail money paid up! Wink

Ed - Thunderstorms your way? I didn’t get that. Now, ice, snow, rain, wind, THAT I got! (And am still getting.) Some nice pics you posted.

Lion - As always, nice subway pics.

Ken - Some very nice mattress tips.

Winter weather - Snow, sleet, snow, wind, freezing rain, rain, wind. Supposed to change back to snow and wind. Had a major pile-up on the interstate north of me near the NY border, involving a few cars and 15 semi trucks. My dad was riding with 2 friends going to Dunkirk when it happened around them, they somehow missed, and got missed, by all the others there. Way too close for their comfort though!

The big trucks were still doing 50+ MPH in icy conditions, which worsened the crash by continuing to pile more into it.

W*^k - Very slow day today, from the weather issues. I did not mind as I really did not wish to be making many deliveries. The one annoying bit was the moving truck rental issue - Only dealt with the customer for 3 hours because they tried to use a prepaid gift card to rent a moving truck. Doesn’t happen, as if they load just enough to cover the one day, then never return, we are out the truck and have nothing to go on other than information they gave for contacts. So, it doesn’t go out on a gift card. Now, it’s scheduled for tomorrow, for the same customer.... Glad I’m off tomorrow!

Health - Still coughing, still do not have my normal stamina back yet. Slowly gaining some of it, but all the coughing has my chest and back muscles tight now. That is really hurting my strength (and stamina most likely) at doing things.

I cough way more at night than during the day, though if I get to doing too much too fast, I do still have a coughing fit or two during the day.

My Dr. wants a follow-up chest X-ray, but i was not informed until after 3 pm yesterday. It did not get done yesterday, due to the fact I was w*^king, nor today due to today’s weather. Maybe Monday will be more conducive for it.

My o2 stats are still 96-98% throughout the day, but my pulse is still a bit Tachy (Fast.). Fever has not returned since Thursday though, when it was a whole  99.9F.

Trains - Still doing little projects, nothing big progress wise on the remodel nor new layout. Until my strength and stamina returns, won’t be much (if any) major progress on that front.

Sports - The first SuperBowl game was between Green Bay and Kansas City, so let’s get them both back into it for the 100th NFL season. (Counting before SB era as well there.) GO PACK GO! (State Farm Insurance Bowl anyone?!?)

Hope all are well, and all have a good night!

A neat look at some '60s New Haven movies.

I was fortunate enough to see a few of those EP-5 Jets in 1971, still running for Penn Central. Painted plain black, though.

The beginning of this movie was filmed approximately in the area of Park Avenue where the earlier photo was posted of the GCT steam shovel.

I went to Florida Tech for a year. Steak was always breaded and fried.

.

That might have been a weird part of Florida, or was that in the college cafeteria? The only places I know of to get breaded fried steak is Grandy's, Denny's, and Cracker Barrel.

.

Of course, I don't seek out breaded fried steak.

Afternoon all, it is 4c on the West Coast and the snow is melting, YEA!

Been a deadbeat all-day, ya just need a do nothin day sometimes. Getting together with the usual crowd tonight so maybe that will bring some life back into me.Laugh

Ken, good to hear you making progress on the walking front and Lion as well with his 20lbs. My buddy is slim and trim now and it all started when I dared him to pack two 25 lb dumbbells when a group of us went on a walk together. He needed to lose 80lbs and lugging that 50 lbs was enough to make it happen as it showed what his body had to carry (and more) every minute of every day. He is now very fit.

Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss and/or fitness and you have to find your own pace. Check out this guy, I really like what he has to say and have learned a lot from his videos. He doesn't appear to be trying to sell anything which is even better. Remember it probably took you 40 years to gain the weight so a 3-year plan to lose it is a good option.

https://www.youtube.com/user/KenDBerry

You already have a six-pack, everyone does, so wait until the goo that is hiding it is gone before you start doing millions of situps and then you won't get discouraged.

About four times a year my body says time to rest and it told me that this morning. Think I'll go run a train or two and just say no if someone asks me to do something.Laugh In a few days, the old body will demand I get back into working out as it starts to go through withdrawal. Then WATCHOUT!Laugh

Garry hope all is well with you as you have not been posting quite as often as you usually do.

The kid in Ottawa just got an amazing offer of an eight-month-long dream position, a high paid internship (didn't know there was such a thing) from his favourite NHL hockey team. He has a tough decision to make, as the University has also been trolling him.Laugh It doesn't seem that long ago (what's 45 years) I was starting out to conquer the world and it worked out quite well for me, I am enjoying watching his journey.

To the train room, Have a good Saturday all.

I went to Florida Tech for a year.  Steak was always breaded and fried.  I survived on salad and hamburger and cheese pizza.

Little bit of snow, sleet and lots of rain today.  Strasburg got enough to cover the ground and Horseshoe Curve a couple inches at the most.

On the webcams, looks like Skykomish, WA got the big dump.

I was a commuter student, too and my food was home cooking as well, but it couldn´t have been worse. My mother never liked cooking at all, so I took every chance I had to "eat out". There were plenty of cheap but good student places around wher one could get a decent meal for very little dineros!

Happy times!

Yep getting a good coating of the fluffy white "stuff" here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS today....  Hoping it will stick around for a couple weeks or more this time.  Huh???  Oh, my lady friend and I want to take a Sleigh Ride together some time in early February (with another couple) and it is difficult to have a sleigh ride when there is no snow!  Smile, Wink & Grin

I stayed in residence for a year and a half. One reason I got out was the food. Only decent thing they served was a tuna casserole. I remember a meat dish they called 'mock duck'. No idea what beast it came from but it was disgusting.

I only ate Breakfast and Dinner at the cafeteria at Eastman School of Music for a year and a half (three semesters). Lunch you purchased at the little lunch place at the school. After that I was married and commuted to Rochester to college.  However the food at Eastman was restaurant quality and I remember good portions.  Served to us by "Waiters" (students who were paid toward tuiton costs) and was basically all you could eat.  Well, Eastman back then was a cut above the rest in a lot of ways. Whistling

I will say, there were a lot of "other" benefits to commuting though...  WinkWinkLOL

Mail just arrived.  Why do they call it Mail?  We have to pay to have things sent to people, so why isn't it called....  Feemail???

Have as good one where ever you are!

Our college food was terrible.  The had something called rib-eye steak, but they never said what animal it came from.  About 3/16 inch thick, mostly fat and gristle, and cooked to the consistency of shoe leather.

I learned to cook pretty well after graduation.

Good Morning,

We are digging out here and expecting a little more snow today but the wind is supposed to hit 40 mph in gusts so I won't be going anywhere. At least the snow is powder so it isn't hard to clear. I have a service that does the driveway.

While waiting for the bits to put my Hudson back together I have been running my Rivarossi 0-4-0 Dockside up and down the track. I got it for my birthday in 1959. It still runs quite well and although it doesn't exactly crawl, it does run smoothly.

This brass Hudson I bought has renewed my interest in acquiring a CPR Jubilee. They looked like a Royal Hudson minus one drive axle. Although I model CN, that is one CP loco that has always fascinated me. I really want an F2 but would settle for an F1. It would have to be painted and that really narrows the field. It was on the list that Rapido said they wanted to build but I'm not holding my breath.

Well I think more coffee is in order. I bought some beans from Rwanda and I think I'll sample some.

At my college, the food was actually good, but there was never enough of it. We were served in a food line, food was piled on a tray, and we didn't get a choice.

.

I went to college in Nashville, and it was the same. Pretty good food, but never enough.

.

There was a burger drive through named Central Park Burgers that sold 1/4 pounders for 79 cents, 89 with cheese. We filled up there often.

TOP OF THE PAGE, but it is not even noon yet. I guess I will have a bottle of Spring Water. Join me if you like.

Windy last night. Very windy. Temps in the -10s, shingles off of the roof blew.

Indeed, I regret to report that half of the moon seems to have blown away too. Not sure yet what that will do to the tides.

The cat is in her cathouse, cant say that she is happy, but she is doing well. Hew spare water was frozen, but not the water in her heated cup. I'll go out after lunch and refill her water, the jug should be thawed by then.

Got new lenses in my spectales yeater day, it improves the view greatly. Had some rice and egg rolls in the Chinese joint before visiting Wal-Mart.

I have lost 20 pounds since last summer. I have started the Bagel Diet. If they are serving over cooked meat (all of it is over cooked) or pork (they serve way too much pork) then I just eat a bagle instead. That and smaller portions seemeth to the trick doeth.
