 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and leave a stein outside for Ulrich.

Dang, the house did not blow up! Bang Head While that comment is in jest some times I feel a good house fire would do me some good!

It was a small leak behinde the stove. The culprit is the cut off valve it's self. Threads on the bottom of the valve is where the leak is. Because of that, the gas company had to turn the gas off at the meter. My furance guy will not repair it because his insurances will only cover gas lines to the main furances.

Plumper cannot get here till Monday. So no heat or hot water for us this weekend. Sigh By the way, wife told me not to use the hot water in the hot water heater! She wants to wash her hair Saturday! Laugh All so going down to the 40's tonight. Whistling She is not going to be a happy camper!

Contractor was supposed to come by this moring at 8:00 AM to give me a bid on my fascia. I did not get to bed till 1:30 AM with gas problem but I was up at 7:00 AM. Well the Dick Contractor did not show nor did he call! Guess I won't hire him!

Bought a Hot Plate so I can have a good beakfest Saturday. Wife bought me breakest from Hardies. Tasted like what the Army would have feed me in the feild and way to many carbohdrates. Felt like sleeping the rest of the day and did nothing.

Day 10 and 20 to go! If yesterday and today did not break down my will power I am 99.5% sure I will make the quest. I am starting to think of my self a none smoker.

Sure does help knowing the light at the end of the tunnel is a PRR I1sa steam engine!

Later, none smoking Ken. Well unless it is I1sa that is! Big Smile

I had already noted the main gas valve to shut off prior to this stupidity,

It should have been shut off before he even started messin with it, and the meter is the gas companies responsibility, eveything after is the property owner, at least that's the way it is here, in SE WI with WEenergies.

Mike.

That is correct Mike, same here in Minnesota.  You, as I know,  a property owner should still hire a licensed professional.  He can also pay the gas company to take care of it for him.

If the property owner knows how to do his own repair, he can.  Technically it's still supposed to be inspected.

We use natural gas.  My parents did, too, but my in-laws use electric kitchen appliances and oil heat.  No problems with our gas, but we get to replace our roof,  thereby proving you can't get ahead.

Meanwhile, in Triple Cities news:

Good news:  They caught the shooters, and it happened across the river from me.  Bad news: someone died. My office was locked up most of the day yesterday, till the perps were caught.

If Galaxy still pops in, I've got his tab.  Later.

Which the smiling Post Office carrier brought today!

I have not opened it yet. Do you want ME to put the Toluidine Red Keystone on it?

A pair of Indigo Buntings were at our feeders today. I've only seen one here before and that was years ago. Smile Pretty thrilled about that!

Cool Ed! We have seen a couple in our backyard over the years. We are off to Point Pelee next Wednesday. Hopefully we will see some there. We often do. Unfortunately the weather doesn't look great for the time we will be there so we may not see much of anything.

One of our club members is a gas fitter. Last week he told us about a man who tried to do a whole bunch of gas work all on his own. He apparently had relocated the gas furnace and dryer to another part of the basement much further away from the gas pipe coming into the house. His solution was to buy about 10 flexible metal connector hoses and daisy chain them across the basement. He couldn't figure out why nothing would work!Dunce

A house blew up close to us a couple of years ago. The owner was in the garment business and had used the gas lines in the basement to hang his inventory. Apparently there were hundreds of pounds of clothing hanging from the pipes when they broke!Dunce

I would love to have a gas stove! We have a supposedly top end GE electric stove which takes forever to heat anything up. My wife flatly refuses to discuss a gas stove even though we have a gas furnace and hot water heater already. She bases her argument on the fact that a couple of years ago her brother's gas stove malfunctioned one night and the breakdown caused the oven to come on and stay on high all night long. In the morning the stove was so hot you could barely touch it! The manufacturer (who I don't recall) admitted that there was a fault in the design but they wouldn't take the stove back. All they offered were repair parts.

Good Morning.  A cup of black go juice, I'll call it this morning,  Thanks.

Looking forward to helping at the Train Show today,  always a fun day.  I need to swing by the cash machine on the way there,  Oh Oh!

The gas subject.  It's plain and simple that anyone that doesn't completely understand it and have 100% confidence in what they're doing, has no business messing with it at all.

Dave,  I can't believe the manufacturer of your brother-in-laws gas stove, just offered parts for a defective appliance.  I wonder how many of them are out there.  I would hate to think of what would happen if someone was on vacation with a stove like that.  You would think a company would not want to roll the dice on such a liability.

The news is full of the examples, when people play with fire so to speak.  One that sticks out in my mind the most was a disaster involving a gas water heater.

I was taking a college course in home inspection.  The instructor passed out copies of a past article in the newspaper.  Someone installed a cap on the end of the pressure release valve on the water heater because it was dripping.

To make a long story short, the water heater blasted through two floors of the house like a rocket and ended up over two blocks away.  It was a miracle no one was hurt.  Not that time anyway.

Have a great day all.

TF

Good morning.

I am sorry I will have to wait to post photos here. I am not able to do that with my cell phone .

The celebration at Promontory Summit yesterday was absolutely incredible!

They had several speakers including senators , Utah governor, two members of the Presidents Cabinet. (I do wish a couple of them did not include some of their political malarkey however).

The two locomotives are beautiful replicas of the originals. They re-did the driving of the golden Spike. The conclusion had a fireworks display and a flyover of fighter jets in formation.

We spent the entire day in Promontory Summit. It was a great experience.

We will see the Ogden museum today where the Big Boy is with The museum‘s other locomotives . Tomorrow, we will try to see the Big Boy as it travels east.

A couple of days ago we had a very nice ride on a scenic train on the Heber Valley Railroad.

Cheers

Good morning.  Beautiful cool, clear morning to walk the trail.  Part of the trail is on an abandoned Burlington line.  When the water in a creek is low, you can still see the remains of a trestle.

I live in an all-electric house.  When we first moved here, I thought I would try to install a gas furnace, but never did.  The power company gives lower rates for all electric houses, and our winter power bills have been surprisingly low.  My wife doesn't mind the electric range -- she grew up with one.

High school graduations in the area today.  I have some receptions to attend.  Not something I enjoy.

Have a great Saturday, everyone.

The only Lancaster I know is the county 40 miles east.  The closest I come to Roses is the air freshener in our basement bathroom.

And I don't have anybody in my family named Elizabeth, so she must have been from the York group on the wrong side of the tracks.

I am Lutheran, though, so I could have a good argument with Saint Thomas More.

Good Afternoon,

A nice day here, supposed to hit 65F!

Ed, you are lucky with the Indigo Buntings! It is sparrow day here, with Song, White Throated, White Crowned, Harris, and a few others.

We have a gas cooktop and my wife wouldn't go back to electric. We installed it in 1990 when we remodelled the kitchen. She likes the precise control of the heat.

Ken, hope all goes well with the fascia. We had to replace a piece on the front of our garage a few years ago. I asked the carpenter if he was going to replace it with fir as that was what the house is built with. He laughed and said he would use clear cedar as it was far less expensive than fir. I guess that is why we haven't had any rot to speak of in a 60 year old house. Fir is fairly resistant to rot.

I've been running trains a bit. The Mikado is getting a little running. Sure like that loco.

When the word Lancaster is mentioned, I think of the WW2 bomber.

Time to do a few errands,

See you later,

CN Charlie

Afternoon all, it is another warm sunny 20c day here on the edge of the Salish Sea. I don't think I have been in this month, it has been busy. Spending lots of time with the kid since he got home two weeks ago. We played a round of golf which is painful and not very rewarding as I am not the golfer I was before Arthritis. We have bought tickets to a couple of Whitecaps games coming up, that will be fun.

The kid got all his marks back and got a perfect GPA, in fact, went over with the bonus marks he got from extra work. The University offered him a job teaching classes to law and economics students that need extra help. About 16 kids in each class. He will likely do that next fall. He turned down two weeks work in the TV show Altered Carbon as he was just too tired and needed time to rest. He also signed up for summer online courses in Law and Economics that will get him into Law school a year earlier. He can do the work in between takes on set when working.

Went into PWRS and had a look at the pre-production model of the Royal Hudson they had, pretty nice.

I have been tracking the (Royal Hudson) ship as it left China and it has now left the Sea of Japan and is in the Sea of Okhotsk, supposed to arrive in Prince Rupert May 18. They had a significant course change and left the Sea of Japan, North of Hokkaido instead of south. Probably weather related.

Got the pool up this week as it has been really warm. Water walking is really good exercise and the pool is a good depth for it.

Steven congrats on the golf course job, how is it going and what are you doing there?

Gotta run, the boss has returned from Costco.

All the best to all.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer Ed a Crown Royal and Brent a Royal Hudson and leave a stain outside for Ulrich.

Ed I would like you to install Toluidine Red Keystone. Might look at using driffrent packing for the front of the engine as well. Seems BLI messes up there packing and a lot of the I1sa smoke box doors are damaged. I think there 3 more on there out let store site. The one jLwii2000 reviwed was all so damaged on the smoke box door.

Train Front Got in gear and started to work on my Mighty M1a Ed knows why I am sure. Got the rear 2 drivers off thanks to Ed's Driver of nuts. But then I could not fine my Pin Vices. So I could not drive the pin out that holds the lower tower gear so I could replaces it. Sigh

Yesterday with all the caboose that went on from the gas leak I was beat. Today nothing but rain so I have not done anything outside. I hope to get the gutter remains cleaned out Sunday and start cutting them off so I can see what I am dealing with where soffit and fascia is concerned.

Short Video of a PRR M1a and I1sa

Trains are running great and day 11 smoke free Ken

Hi TF,

That was exactly my response! Something is wrong here!

I also couldn't believe that my BIL kept the stove at all. I would have bitten the bullet and scrapped the thing. I wouldn't try to sell it either. I wouldn't want to put anyone else at risk.

Great birding in the backyard today! Ed's indigo bunting paid us a visit! We had rose breasted grosbeaks, male and female baltimore orioles, both nuthatches, white crowned sparrows, dozens of goldfinches and even a hawk. The five cup sunflower seed feeder is being emptied in less than a day. We bought one large orange for the orioles and it is mostly gone in two days.

I have a question for the birders: You have made reference to feeding 'jelly' to the orioles. I have never heard of this before. What kind of jelly are you feeding them and how do you put it out?

Thanks,

Dave

We hang a tray from a tree branch with several plastic cups on the tray.  We put grape jelly, orange marmalade, and sometimes some other flavors.

Last year, the orioles mostly ate the grape jelly, but this year they seem to like the orange marmalade best.  We have three pairs visiting the feeder this year.

Thanks John,

That's easy enough to do. I'll have to figure out a way to mount a cup. I might just try putting one on the deck railing with a slice of orange beside it to see if they will come that close (10 ft from where we sit).

Does it attract bees? I'm guessing it would.

Dave

P.S. I'll give up the grape jelly but I think I'll keep the marmalade made with scotch to myself!Laugh

My wife bought an oriole platform feeder for me a few years ago. It is the one seen in the photo above. It has four plastic cups in it but sometimes when the oriole has eaten the orange I'll fill that with grape jelly, too. They are attracted to the orange color, too.

The feeder has two spikes on it to stick the orange halves onto. Several recommendations I've come across say to stick with plain grape jelly, not jam, not preserves.

They sure like it so I've never tried anything else. One of the closeout stores near me sells Smucker's for about $2 for a 32 oz jar.

Here are some feeder ideas:

https://tinyurl.com/y6a5lehw

I see some of the other birds occasionally take a nip at the jelly, too. The very first time I saw a Baltimore Oriole here, maybe fifteen years ago, was when one roosted on a hummingbird feeder and started drinking the nectar. Since then I've been making my own Oriole nectar, just plain sugar and water. The Orioles have been back every summer since then Smile

Ed   Has the Kingfisher been back?  That's always been my favorite bird.  I like the clicking sound they make when they fly to another tree.

Only saw him that one day, TF. He must have just been passing through on his way north. He may stop back in late summer on his way back home.

Today was the first time I could get out to cut grass, too. Soggy, wet ground and rain is due tonight. The mower deck needed some welding and a new "vortex baffle" installed. Modern mowers are really flimsy!

Cheers, Ed

Thanks for the feeder ideas Ed.

Our feathered friends deserve it Big Smile

I forgot to mention, if you can, get (or make) a feeder that has a little rain protection so the jelly doesn't get washed out. The birds seem to like a place where they feel sheltered and it helps to keep the food dry, too.

Here's a platform feeder I made over ten years ago with a peaked roof and the floor is a piece of stainless steel screen so the seed stays dry:

It has been a while since a red headed woodpecker has been at my feeder. I'd sure like to see him back again.

I immediately came to the same conclusion. I will either buy something or build something that has a roof on it to deflect the rain.

Thanks for teaching me something new about feeding orioles!

Good Sunday morning from flyover country.

It's 46° out this morning after a night of thunder storms. It smells clean and clear after the storms cleared out.  The birds are out in force after the storm.

It's off to church, then a day with only one thing scheduled.  My kind of day!

Still working on my N Scale gas station.  I thought I would be done weeks ago.  I'm just now getting ready to build the free-standing sign.

The layout was started last year, I'm 67 years old, and I'm already thinking of what I'll do differently on my next one.  By the time I finish this one, I will be 93, so I will switch to HO for my hands and eyesight.

Have an enjoyable day, everyone!

Good morning everyone,

I suppose it's lost on this audience, but Happy Mother's Day to all.

Ken: thanks for the heads up on sprung trucks.  Half of my fleet is yellow box kits and back then all of the trucks were sprung.  When I first started building Athearn car kits, the trucks had to be assembled.  So, I've done a few.

Are the sprung trucks the cause of more derailments over rigid frame trucks?

Anyone know?

York1:  You're contemplating going from N scale to the gigantic HO?  Funny, I've thought of going from HO to S for the same reasons.  Apparently, the right size is in the perception of the beholder.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!
