Did not do much today. Planted a few flowers for the wife and that is pretty much it. Still in the dump about what I saw yesterday that needs to be fixed.
Richard Yes I am still vaping and before you blow me any smoke about it one step at a time. Yes I am still taking in Nicotine, but no Tar or Carbon Monoxide. Next step will be getting a new vaping system so I can control the amount of nicotine I am ingesting. If you where not going to blow me any smoke, sorry.
Train Front Starting to enjoy short trains? Something is wrong with me! Running a C&O RS2 with only 9 cars and a SW 800 with 8 cars on the manline?
Day 6 with out sucking in tar or carbon monoxide.

Good evening all.
Zoe - A RBF please. Thanks.
Lion - Glad you got the server figured out. And, nice pics!
Ed - Nice catch of the hummingbird. They are tuff to get in focus at times, as they are always moving. I now have a pair making a nest in a lilac bush out in the back yard.
Ken - Whilest I dislike the vaping as well, the not smoking cigarettes is a very good move. And, there is nothing wrong with running short trains.
Kevin & Garry - Safe trips.
Weather - It was 76 today, will be much cooler tomorrow. The asthma has not been happy with our up and down temps, nor the "incident" yesterday....
Incident - During the mandatory overtime, there was another individual cleaning stuff near the front customer service/register area. I thought they were using window/glass cleaner. After a while, it clicked that they were not using that, exactly. It "smelled funny" for glass cleaner. When I asked what they were using for cleaner, as it "smells funny", the answer I got, was "bleach."
I then said that I thought they were using window cleaner, and they said they were.
So, yes, they were indeed using both glass cleaner, and bleach.
Now, I am aware that most glass cleaner contains ammonia.....
I immediately said "What!!!! Stop it!" And went to prop open the door.
Haven't been breathing right at all since.
Seems they couldn't smell it, as they are a smoker... And they had no clue that you can't mix amonnia and chlorine together. YIKES!
So, not only is smoking bad for your health, it can be very dangerous to you, and your cow*rkers!
It, can also be very messy, as the following video shows....
https://youtu.be/w8uyGJzwo58
Hope all are doing well, and all enjoy the night!
EDIT: Hmm.... Video didn't work... Let's try it as just a link....

I can now see it! That had to be the most fun the gas station attendant has had at work.

Rainy and cool morning. Around here, no one complains about rainy days in the spring. It may delay planting, but the rain is so welcome, everyone is in a good mood (except my wife -- she can't stand cloudy days -- she grew up where sunny days were seldom seen).
Have to drive to a city about 40 miles away to do some shopping today. There are no hobby shops there, but my two favorite all time stores are there - Menards and Home Depot. I can spend hours roaming the aisles and dreaming of being rich enough to buy everything.
Keep thinking of Ken -- I know what you are going through. The nicotine is very addictive -- you will feel better off of it.
Everyone have a good day. I'm going to enjoy seeing some real UNION PACIFIC trains today while driving, and then I'm going to enjoy running my UNION PACIFIC trains on my layout.

Not meant to offend, just to understand. My daughter fought the valiant battle with the cancer sticks and won. Vaping was the ticket for her as it allowed her to gently wean herself from the nicotine. Keep it up. Fight the good battle. And all that stuff.

First two hummingbirds of the season last evening! Both males and fighting for territory of course. The ladies will be along in a few days.

hon30critterFirst two hummingbirds of the season last evening!
Yes! Mine showed up at 10 AM this morning. Thanks, Rick, for the reminder to put out the feeders!
Amazing to see the tiny hummingbird and compare to the Pileated woodpecker or Turkey vulture and realise they are in the same avian group!
A Bee Hummingbird, native to Cuba, the male averages around 1.9 grams weight!
Cheers, Ed
No hummies yet here but we had an orange crowned warbler in the yard today and there is a redwing blackbird trying to call a mate.
Heading out to try the Turkish food at a little local restaurant. It is inexpensive but supposed to be good.

Thinking of gas stations and travel, last summer when we drove to the northwest, we drove through Oregon. I pulled up at a gas station, got out to fill the car, and was surprised to have a guy ask me what kind of gas I wanted, and he pumped it for me!
Not since the 1960s had I had someone pump gas for me. I found out it is an Oregon law. Maybe there are other states that do this, too, but it sure surprised me.

NJ has the same law. I wish it were like that here in Ohio so that I could just sit in the car and listen to the radio while someone else pumps the gas for a change.

Explain to the "Milennials" today how it used to be
Texaco_3-1958 by Edmund, on Flickr
I used to be a pump-jockey at a Sunoco station for a while. Great summer job!
I met my wife while she was working a part time job, pumping gas, ( and going to school) when she first arrived in WI., from the Navy.
She was working her way back to Montana, and WI is as close as she got until we both went out to Billings, so I could meet my future in-laws.

Not only did they pump your gas, but the attendants would also check your oil.
When we were in Oregon several years ago, the attendants came out and offered to pump my gas. I didn't want to let them do it and was reluctant to hand over the pump nozzle until the guy explained that he had to pump the gas by law. Well since he put it that way, ok. Unfortunately, millennial s have no idea what the 50s were like. Nuff said on that!
Got myJune MR yesterday. One of the featured layouts had a 3' long tilt bridge. That is really something. The name for those bridges escapes me for the moment.
Quick question for anyone: Are old sprung BB trucks worth salvaging by replacing the original wheels with metal wheels? Or, are they not worth the effort?
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.
Jim (with a nod to Mies Van Der Rohe)
I’m from Washington, and the Oregon border is only about 1.5 hrs away, so I’ve been to Oregon quite a few times. While having gas attendants is nice, I believe that the gas price goes up when you enter Oregon, for that reason! Also in Oregon, you still have to pump your own Diesel, though at a few stations the attendants may pump that too.
Regards, Isaac

UP 831 when you said sprung trucks do the trucks have real springs? If so don't waste your time with them. When YGW sold me 36 B&O coal cars about 10 of them had trucks with real springs. Every one of them fell a part. Luckly I have a huge box of trucks and took care of the problem. Thanks Ed!
Richard Soory I may souned harsh. I have been waiting for some negative feed back and jumped to the worry conclusion. I am sorry if I might have offended you. Glad it worked for your daughter!
TF I need yours and other help. I am going to have to try a DYI project on my Fascia by my self. Will be appoximately 35 feet in a L shape. Main thing I am wondering about right now is there any tool, device or method to hold one end of the wood to a rafter while I attach the other end? There will be others, but that is my first concern.
Ed again a great pleasure talking with you and taking my order! But I did save you a little money!
7 days without smoking and did not crave one today.

Ken,
Tack a 1X2 at the point of the L to butt the facia up against. Start in the middle of the facia, slide the facia board up against the 1X2, using it as a stop. Tack in 1-2 nails to hold in place, you might have to make some adjustments before you nail everything tight. On right angle corners I 45 the corner, and prime and paint the raw edge. I fit the facia, and then prime and paint both sides before installing.
Sofitt--I remove part of it, make new section, prime and paint both sides. When I nail it back on I use scrap wood nailed over the old section, allowing it to hang over the joint by 3/8 of an inch or so. Place the one end on top of the scrap (they hold the end up), fasten the near end, and then move over 2-3 rafter ends and fasten there for additional support, then finish nailing the section on. When you get to the last section, just reverse the process. I will be doing this later on this summer after my shoulder re-build,(again). Had to do this about 10 years ago, and this is how I did it working alone. Make sure of your measurements before you cut to length, if not break out the Bondo.

Law requires an attendent to pump the gass.

Toto... I don't think we asre in Kansas anymore.
Good Morning All,
A regular and a blueberry bagel toasted with creamcheese please. Sorry Mr. Lion, I like cheese of most types.
No progress on the layout the last couple of evenings but I had my follow up with the doc yesterday and he says the skin graft took well and the rest is healing nicely with no signs of infection. I just have to be good a little longer and not bend the knee. Fortunately I have no upcoming cameo on Game of Thrones so not bending the knee is not an issue.
Ken - that was great advice you got on the solo soffitt w**k. The best part was painting all exposed surfaces before installation. We even did that on our deck with the treated uprights and joists and it is hanging in there just fine.
Back to the shop with me, still wrestling with a worn out steering rack and housing but I'm making progress. Chow, J.R.
Mornin' folks!
I don't like having to pump my own gas either. Don't mind plugging in the Volt though...... When I do have to fill up with fossilized Dinosaur Dung it only takes about 7 gallons anyway.... I get around 134 miles on a gallon (not counting the kWhs)...
I see a pickup outside in my driveway so the guys are arriving to start tearing out the old sheetrock in the hallway.
Monday I set a new record for myself... Walked (and ran) over 8 miles. Did the lawn after my walk at the fied house. Yesterday my son and I moved all the stuff out of my bedroom to the dining room and the living room. I have some muscles talking back to me today... Actually feels good...

We'll get there sooner or later!
Good morning, everyone. Another cool, dark, rainy morning. I love it.
Another day of driving. My wife is going with me to another Home Depot. That means I won't be able to stay as long as I want. She has to have time to walk the aisles of a Hobby Lobby.
Lion, great pictures of the subways. I haven't riden the NYC subway since the 1980s. I did ride the Atlanta subway to get to a Braves game in the mid 1990s. Both times I was too interested in looking at the people and I didn't really pay attention to the ride.
Ken, seven days without a cigarette. A month ago I'll bet you didn't beieve it could be done. Congratulations.
herrinchoker, excellent advice about working on soffit. I wish I had followed your instructions when I did this.
SPSOT,
SPSOT fan I’m from Washington, and the Oregon border is only about 1.5 hrs away, so I’ve been to Oregon quite a few times. While having gas attendants is nice, I believe that the gas price goes up when you enter Oregon, for that reason!
You're right about the prices. We entered Oregon from Washington, and I noticed the price increase. I thought at the time it was due to higher taxes, but when I learned of the attendents, I realized they have to get paid somehow.
I'm working on my N Scale layout's gas station. I've finished with the building and the canopy. Strangely enough, I'm spending more time and worry on the gas pumps than I did on the building. They're so small, and I just can't seem to get the look of them right.
Since we're reminiscing about gas stations of the past, remember riding around as teenagers, and pooling money to put a dollar's worth of gas in the car? We could drive up and down the town's strip all evening on that dollar.
Have a great day.
