Well, at least it looks like a subway station.

Nice thing about modeling a subway is you can slap-dash things together and leave crud all aroun and it looks perfectly prototypical.

 Afternoon Duners Sigh

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer Ed a Crown Royal and Brent a Royal Hudson and yes leave a stein out side for Ulrich.

Boy I have had better days off! $125.50 poorer I had stove, hot water and heat for a whole 1 hour! Sigh Wife and I both noticed a gas smell just after I paid the plumper and he left. Called him back and he doubled back and checked his work, could not find a leak. Only thing I did not like was he did not bring a meter to detect a gas leak!

Called the gas company again. Sent out the same person from last Thursday, all of the plumpers repair where corrected and not leaking. Guy from gas company thinks the leak is coming from under the house now. Seems odd but he said they Don't go into crawl spaces? That just seems odd to me!

Plumper is coming out agin this Friday with a gas dsection meter. Not looking forward to 3 days of cold showers, but did it before. Whistling

Jan I saw your PM but did not want to call just after you had surgery. What time would it be good to call you? I all so have free long distances.

Day 13 with out smoking. With the last 2 weeks being like it has been I think I may just make it.

 Cold showers again, Ken

Hi everyone,

All this talk about college brings back memories.

After literally throwing away opportunities in school, for guitars and rock n roll, I finally settled down years later and went to a community college part time and paid my own way too.  Got my two year interior design degree after seven years of classes and graduated magna ' ' Laude and made the Dean's list.

I do have one question for Ray.  50 years ago I tried to study double bass for a semester.  When I played with the concert band, I couldn't hear the bass at all.  Is that normal?  As a result I gave up on it and went back to the electric bass.  Funny thing, I'd like to take it up again, but I have real reservations about it.  Any thoughts?

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Jim (with a nod to Mies Van Der Rohe)

Good Evening All,

Ken - no hot water again. That's really hard though it at least is not the middle of winter.  Maybe take the wife for a day trip and include a motel in the itinerary with a hot shower. Not being suggestive just a thoughtEmbarrassed.

UP831 - possibly mike the bass just for yourself and use an earbud? On the other hand I tried playing drums with headphones and preferred without. But then it's a different deal and of course I never had any trouble hearing myselfWhistling

Foot got well enough to spend an hour or two on the layout. Finished the ballasting and reworked the road to the back shop and weathered it. Not sure I won't do more there. If I figure out how to download/upload the latest batch of pics, I'll try to post them tomorrow.    Time to get some sleep.    Cheers, J.R.

Another reason to be careful with gas appliances, an Ohio family of four and their three dogs, was just killed by a faulty vent on a tankless gas water heater:

My K4, on the right, has a bad decoder. Waiting to hear back from Broadway on a replacement. You mentioned that there were lots of these in the "Refurb Outlet" BLI must have another bad batch of decoders.

My local stray cat came around this morning for a tuna handout. I had not seen Spike in over three weeks! It was sure cold out for him (39°F)[4] We can't seem to catch a break on "Spring Time" weather.

Good Morning All,

A reqular, two over medium and bacon with toasted rye please Zoe. I could just see separation this morning between the bottom of the clouds and the Berkshire Hills on the horizon. Maybe the rain will let up for a day.

Ed - at least it didn't taste like chicken ! I thought it was sorta like Buffalo meat myself.

I still need to scenic and figure out a better transition from the concrete road over the main but it is progress none the less.

The turntable is still a w**k in progress but the motor works if notchy and the power to the bridge is still messed up. To the rear is the sole scenicked area now half overgrown with construction matl.

There is no place for complacency in this world. Gas leaks, electical faults, plumbing - all of it can be a huge expensive problem especially when small issues are ignored. Our house fire was caused because the rest of the family all decided that it was ok to leave computers on 23/7 including laptops and without extra cooling fans. When my youngest left his on , the battery went up in flames and sent the curtains up which spread to the rest of his room. just takes one mistake.

Well, I'm in need of getting some w**k done so off to the shop now.  CUL, J.R.

Lion, bet you could still hear it just fine though. Strangest gig we ever did was a dance at a school for the deaf. Only time we were ever asked to mike the drums louder and turn the bass up more.     J.R.

Yeah, at monastery we do not allow monks to burn candles or incesnse in their rooms.

But computers are on 24/7. Got five servers in my office in addition to may own workstation. The servers are 'headless' but my box has four monitors. : )

LIONS do not approve of laptops, and I try to keep them out of here, but some peeps inist on them.

All puters have UPS boxes, The entire rack, plus my computer are only puttin 25% of its capacity to use. UPS machines are well made and come with warranties and stuff. Besides UPS units do not use lithium batteries.

Good morning, everyone.  Had a nice walk this morning -- cool, clear, and dry.

With all the rain, I will have to cut the grass again today.  Some people enjoy yard work and gardening.  I'm the opposite.  I would just as soon put astroturf on our entire lot, sell the lawnmower, and enjoy my lawn chair.

Lion, when considering a model railroad, I never really considered a subway, but after seeing all your pictures, it looks great.

GMTRacing, I never thought my laptop may be a fire hazard.  I'm glad you told us and I will make sure to turn it off and unplug it tonight.

Have a great day, everyone.

I think for anyone that has a layout, a house fire is a terrifying possibility.

.

In Florida we do not have gas, and my house was fairly new and up to date when I bought it. I have owned it for 20 years now, and it is no longer new.

.

During the remodel, I was suprised to see some of the "less than professional quality" work that passed initial inspection.

Kevin,

In our case we were lucky. We were at work, my #2 son got #3 up and moving out of his smoke filled room with an assist from the retired fireman a few doors down. The fire department was there almost immediately and they were truely outstanding covering most of the stuff on the first floor and even putting poly sheet over the layout in the basement. Above and beyond. The fire got into the attic which sustained the most burn damage and I lost all my years of collectibles team gear, drivers suits, etc. The downstairs had water damage on the floors but was pretty intact. Most important of course everyone was ok though my youngest got an ambulance to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhallation returning home about an hour later. Stuff even unreplaceable stuff is not important, people are.

The mess in the aftermath is unbelievable. If it had ended there it wouldn't have been too bad but there was still insurance and building code to deal with. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Enough said.  J.R.

I know this all too well.

I was injured in an automobile accident in 2013, and the insurance mess dragged on for five years. I was not at fault, but I would have been better off to have been at fault. I would not wish that experience on anyone.

.

On a better note... Look at this burger Uber Eats brought to my hotel room! Those Tater Tots drawn in garlic butter were decadent beyond measure.

Ken.

My time, Eastern Daylight Saving. What is your Area Code??--We are getting upwards of 20 ++ robo calls a day, and I have become quite profane now when I answer the phone if I do not recognize the area code, or the number. Sometimes it works, others it doesn't----I was recieving calls from a young? woman 3-4 times a day offering time share opportunities. After nearly a month of this, the last time she called I asked her if she would like to consume some adult beverages, and participate in adult activities, that was five days ago---she hasn't called back---here's hoping------

I had resigned myself to my youngest delivering Chinese food for a career when he announced he was taking some classes at the community college. Lo and behold he got straight A's and continued. Transferred to one of our state colleges and got his degree averaging above a 4.0 GPA and then got accepted to grad school. This all from a square peg they spent 12 years trying to pound into a round hole.

I'm glad to hear that your son is succeeding.

I wish we had been more assertive when our kids were in school. Both sons were treated badly by various teachers but Dianne and I had been conditioned to believe that they knew what they were doing so we were reluctant to question the way our kids were being treated. How wrong we were! We went through some pretty rough times with our son Cole, partly school related and partly drug related, but he straightened himself out and now he is doing absolutely great!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Kevin,

You did well in capturing photos of the Ruddy Turnstone. The one with the brown feathers is a breeding adult, and the other one is a juvenile. They breed in the far North Tundra, and winter in the Gulf Coast, and along the coast of California, and the Baha area.

Hi guys

I wonder if young steven got his job situation ironed out?

WEll, 2 weeks I mentioned i crushed a certain anatamy part. WEEEEELLL,  I ended up being admitted to the hospital for 3 days, followed by a weeks bed rest. It got infected, and swelled up like a balloon. They called in the Infectious Disease Control Doctor!!! The floor nurse later explained they do that now so theat DR can determine which antibiotic to use for which infection. Ok, whew, I was envisioning something like ebola or listeria or something, wondering how THAT got THERE. It was a  miserable stay, though, and naturally *everyone* had to "see it". Egads. You lose some dignity in the hospital anyway, but REALLY? the CNAs don't *really* need to see it. I had to missa week of work {here now}. Whatever you do, protect that anatamy!!!
The infection is now gone, and the swelling has 1/2 gone down, but not clear yet, still sore, but better.

Since I was laid up, not much to report.

Gas and gas leak....our gas meter is IN our basement. I don't know why...veryone elses is on the outside. It worries me some. I asked the gas co. to move it outside. They said 1} they cpouldn't do that, 2} it would be my cost to move it. I said all it takes is a little piping to move it, but they said, if I wanted it moved, we'd have to pay. I said it shouldn't have beeen put down there in the first place!                     But unless I want to cough up BIG bucks...it wasn't cheap to move it for it being a few pipes to do so, it'll have to stay where it is. The thing is it has an outside guage they can read. Apparently they don't trust THEIR guage, because once a year they have to come in go down and read the acutal meter to be sure uit matches!

KEN:
On fire...gas or not related. I went through a house fire, trust me you don't want one!!! It was in the middle of the night in Feb in New England...I had to crawl out a window wearing what I wore to bed...only a pr of underwear and a pair of socks! I had taken my jacket off in the bedroom, so I had it too, it was  on the chair under teh window I crawled out of....I had to go to the hopital for smoke inhalation. I lost EVERYTHING! ALL I owned the next day, was a coat, a pr od socks, and a pr of underwear. Thehospital had to give me hospital pants to wear out. Coworkers were kind and allowed to go home ot get some clothes they'd part with to clothe me immediately. I had renters insurance{It was a rental}, so I was covered for $10k, but lost about $22k I calculated, and Im sure that wasnt everyhting. What wasn't burned up was water and smoke damage as half the house burned to the ground. The cause? electrical..old fuse system, that the wiring left and fusebox made no sense to the investigators. That was in 1989. I NEVER wnat to go through that again! Nor through another loss of everythign for any reason! Ihave too much stuff, but I likes me schtuff!!!

well, Its about time to run night audit, I wish the last guest would hurry and arrive so I can run it in peace.....if not i have to cancel his res. aND if he shows up during night audit, he'll just have to wait for the computer, or later than that, I have to cancel then reinsstate his  res. Ugh. Not a problem, but a whole bunch of extra steps if he shows. Reminds me...night audit is usally run about 2-3AM.If yu have reservations adn you are going to arrive that late...do the courteous thing and call the hotel directly to give an ETA so the niight auditor knows what to do with your res. Who knows, he may not even show, then we have to charge him for a no-show! so..if you AREN'T going to make a reservation...call and cancel it! makes life easier on everyone. a late cancellation with a reasonable excuse will usually get you out of the no-show fee, but if you are going to canclel, do so at least 24 hours in advance. end of rant/lecture.

well, best go start breakfast preliminary so as to waste time before runmning night audit in case he shows late.

have a great WEdnesday everyone!

I went through a house fire, trust me you don't want one!!!

We had our fire back in January of 2012. It was sure a "reality check" when you get complacent and think it can't happen to you.

I was one of those guys that never thrwe away the original boxes that my computers, speakers and audio stuff and scores of G scale boxes with lots of expanded foam. Plus we had dozens of patio seat cushions stored in the attic.

Once the fire got started it got those boxes and all that foam burning. Sure gets hot in a hurry. I emptied three 20lb. extinguishers but the fire just laughed at those. Wiring burned out so water pump died after the breakers tripped.

My wife was smart enough to get the cats out and the car out of the garage. Good thing, too as the fire department just arrived they could go right into the garage and up the pull-down stairs to attack the fire in the attic, the hottest spot.

My son is a leutenant on the FD and having him there was a blessing since we were afforded some leeway in helping the company. I saw one of the guys with a pry hook (pike pole) starting to go at the window glass. I shouted, wait! I'll just open them, no need to bust them out. Same with the glass on the sliding doors. They were ready to bust them out and I said, can't we just open them???

The next day the board-up guys came and the first thing they said was, "how come they didn't bust all your glass out? Never saw that before". I said I told them not to and my son backed me up.

Anyway, the fire was under control and the house wasn't a total loss. Very little water got to the basement and the layout. Many of my RR books got ruined but I replaced many of those and no one got hurt.

Funny how you don't even think of simple little things like a few cans of bug repellant that were flaming like torches high up on a shelf where I couldn't even get to them. Those three little cans, with butane propellant, caused lots of additional damage! The little plastic nozzle melts off and the remaining can acts like a flame thrower.

Nope, I don't wish that on anybody!

Cheers, Ed

Good Morning All,

Just a regular to go please. Docs visit this morning, still on "light duty" but the skin graft looks good and the donor site is healing nicely as well. And bonus, the sun is out today.

I had forgotten Galaxy had had his fire though I remember the story now. It's just messy and you really never get back to where you were so you just need to move on. In my case, I lost my layout not due to fire but from water damage incurred during a storm where the approved contractor didn't tarp the house properly. The secondary claim from that was at least twice the initial one - all the walls, all the wooden floors etc.

Back to the shop for me.   Chow, J.R.

OK, I'm going out right now to remove two cans of OFF from a shelf in my garage and move them to my shed.

I feel your pain.  I was receiving upwards of 15 calls per day, many with spoofed caller IDs.  The ID would say people and numbers from my small town who I would normally receive a call from.  When I answered, it would be "Rachel" or "Alice" from cardholder services offering zero credit card rates.  We were close to stopping our phone service completely, although we like it better than cell phones in our house.

Finally, I subscribed to a free service called ROBONOMO.  You let your phone ring at least one time.  After that, if it is a bogus call, the phone does not ring again.  If it continues to ring, you can be pretty sure it is a real call.

At first, we had 15 single ring calls per day.  Now we are down to one every other day.

It's not perfect.  Every so often, a bad call gets through, but it is so much better now.

Yikes, I don't want to think about what would happen if there were a fire at my house... Indifferent Let's have some more "friendly" fire, shall we?

The Timber's Authentic MKE Style BBQ food truck is coming to the Kalmbach Media parking lot at lunchtime today. So the Diner's lunch special today is barbecued brisket, cooked low and slow over a wood fire and served with slaw... Enjoy!

Now it's time to say good morning!  It started sprinkling this morning during the walk, but now the sun is out, and we are expecting 90° today.  When it gets this hot this early, we can usually expect strong storms over the next days.

You can always tell stormy weather is coming in my little town.  At the interstate, the motels' parking lots have the storm chasers cars and trucks parked there.  We seem to be in a central location for storms, so the storm chasers congregate here, waiting to see which direction to go for the best chance to encounter a tornado.

I had to laugh once during a storm.  Our town's tornado sirens began to sound, and from my school office window, I could see the dozens of cars heading out to see the storm.  Our tornado horns seem to now mean:  "Don't go to your basement. Go outside to a clear area so you can take a selfie with the yourself in front of the storm."

Hope everyone has a great day.

P.S.  GeePee35:  I will now have to spend several hours trying to get my toes uncurled after reading about your continuing medical issue.  I can't even imagine ...

Having a phone number with an area code not local helps screen out robocalls For example if I live in New York getting a Las Vegas number where  know no one helps

Joe, that was my problem.  The calls I got were not only from my area code, but also with my local 3 digit prefix numbers, meaning my local area.  My caller ID indicated I got a call from my local doctor's office number.  Another  was from my financial advisor.

I even got told at church one Sunday that my name and number were being used for some calls.

I have been told by police and legislators that there is not much they can do.  When they stop one group, the group moves to another system.

Yikes, I don't want to think about what would happen if there were a fire at my house... Indifferent Let's have some more "friendly" fire, shall we?

Uhhh, friendly fire is not good either! I think the chance of death is even more likely!

This is getting really depressing...

Uhhh, trains aren’t depressing though... Yeah I like trains, let’s talk about trains!
