One of the key problems of internet forums and web page comments sections. People hide behind their avatar and say things they would likely never say if standing face to face with someone as most have been taught to treat others with a little courtesy. Not saying folks weren't asked for their feedback, or that anyone responded outside of how they actually feel. Rather, online anonymity shuts off some individual's courtesy filters so brutal honesty sometimes comes out. That is a problem with me, even if I were talking to someone, I tell the truth, good, bad or indeferent. Don't ask for comments unless you really want an answer.

Ahhhhhh! We really DO want the answer. I would just say that some folks have a hard time communicating that answer without being brutal. This is an awesome hobby populated by awesome people. But, civility can sometimes be supplanted by aynonymity. I hope to hear your feedback as the series progresses: good, bad, or otherwise - this is why we started this thread.
Thanks and rail-on my friend!

blucrsrSteve, keep up the great work. Really enjoy your presentation style and look forward to future videos. Been watching your YT videos for a while and I honestly was shocked to see you here at MRR. Welcome aboard!
Thanks and that is AWESOME! You know how much I love hanging out with the community. Over on MRVP it's a little harder to engage, so we agree to open this thread. Tottaly cool to see you here and I look forward to talking about the vids as they are published.
Thanks again, and rail-on brother!
Didn't I say "no sniping at other Forum users"? That means no name-calling, even if you aren't referring to a specific person. Posts have been edited.
If I have to step into this thread again, penalties will be handed out.

First I would like to congratulate Steve for what he has done by making videos for our enjoyment and education on model railroading. I am sure it is harder than it looks and Steve has certainly made some nice professional looking content that still takes the angle of a regular model railroader.
Steve asked for comments and feedback so I thought I would give some of my opinions. Please this is just my views and preferences and Steve and others may take them with as little or as much value as they wish.
I like Steve’s enthusiasm, though I would agree with some others that it is a bit much, and I think his style of ”blog” video as oppossed to “how to” style videos fits a more enthusiastic person. I would prefer a bit less talk and a bit more show of the layout, and based on what I’ve seen of It’s My Railroad on YouTube. I would also prefer Steve shorten his videos to about 20 mins instead of 40 by eliminating some talking. That is NOT to say get rid of the talking all together, we need it to get an introduction to the videos, but as it is I often skip much of the talking myself to get to the actual “content”. Of course once again this is my opinion and it may not be how others like it or more importantly how Steve likes it (these are after all his videos and he can decide how to make them.)
I look forward to seeing more It’s My Railroad and thank Steve for taking this brave step to get some feedback. Steve’s willingness to accept feedback should continue to make his show better and better.
Regards, Isaac

ItsMyRailroad SPSOT fan I would also prefer Steve shorten his videos to about 20 mins instead of 40... Hey thanks for the feedback SPSOT! I have taken it the spirit I believe intended and I appreciate your candor. Just curious if the durations you mention are possibly typos? No big deal, just want to be sure I'm reading it right. Thanks again for chiming in, and rail-on my friend! s~

I read it a couple of times, and I think SPSOT is talking about Steve's other life on YouTube with his "It's My Railroad" series.
Mike.
My You Tube
Mike has got it correct, I was talking about YouTube. I assumed Steve would follow a similar format to his YouTube videos on MRVP, and that his 13ish mins video was just an introduction.
Got it. You can expect the MRVP videos to be under 20 minutes. Thanks again for the feedback guys!
ItsMyRailroad Got it. You can expect the MRVP videos to be under 20 minutes. Thanks again for the feedback guys!
Great. I think 20 mins is the perfect limit for most model railroad videos. Any longer and I tend to get bored, and 20 mins is sufficient time to get some good content in. MRVP seems to have figured this out because few of their videos excede that time.
Once again I really appreciate Steve for being willing to accept feedback, it’s going to make for some great content!

Since model railroading is such a visual hobby, I could watch a video all day if there is a lot to look at in terms of a completed layout or the progress of a layout under construction.

You’ve got that right Rich! I completely agree!

Az, I'm pretty sure you have to subscribe to MRVP to see any more of his videos. That first one was just an "introduction" to him being part of MRVP.
Here's his other You Tube thing, which he had going before being part of MRVP.

Thanks Mark! Couldn't get back to the forum in time to announce that. Rail-on brother!
Boom!
Okay rail-fans the next episode of The Port Smith Project Build is up on MRVP! If you get a chance to watch it, let's talk about it here!

What are you talking about? When I asked the Question that epsiode was not available yet. FYI: I'm a member of MRVP.
Glad to see you’re still around Steve!
Saw your second video, it was good, but I have some feedback if your willing to accept it. I would like Steve to be aware that I skiped through a lot of the video. I found it a bit long for the amount of content covered. It’s hard for me to watch 12 mins just for stringing two strands of LEDs.
Of course if others like this style I can just skip through it and get what I need out of it. I may be alone in my opinions. Steve says, it is Steve’s railroad!

This seems to be a bit strange to start a thread about a series of videos and then not be able to view the rest of the series without paying a $45 fee.
Goodness, my original post on this thread considered it as "advertising".......
Guess I was right.

After the second episode Steve, I would say you are growing on me. Never would imagine that a 1/2 drill bit would shatter, Harbor Freight?
I wish you would have discussed how big a transformer one needs for the LED strips. We had a thread on that here, and I wish I payed attention. It might matter for the guys with the larger multi-level layouts.
I'm a subscriber and a fanboy of MRVP. All comments on the videos there are moderated. By the time your comment is visible, you've lost interest in continuing the discussion. I'm sure Steve learned a lot more here in a couple weeks, that he would have learned in a year reading the MRVP comments.
Advertising? Sure but why is that a problem? There are 4 ads for 3 products on this page, as I type. Go to to your favorite news site, national or local, progressive or conservative and there are ads for all sorts of click bait. I'm looking at baby eagles on a webcam and there is an ad for Railcar Movers.
Railcar Movers and baby eagles? I think maybe I better check my privacy settings.

Hi Kevin, my only mission is to promote this awesome hobby! Thanks for watching, and rail-on my friend!
BigDaddy After the second episode Steve, I would say you are growing on me. Never would imagine that a 1/2 drill bit would shatter, Harbor Freight?
I'm in construction and I have been using drill bits for decades just like eveyone else. Never seen a drill bit to that before. Scared the heck out of me for a second there! LOL!
BigDaddy I wish you would have discussed how big a transformer one needs for the LED strips. We had a thread on that here, and I wish I payed attention. It might matter for the guys with the larger multi-level layouts.
Actually, I just bought the transformer they make for that set of lights. I am not certain how much they draw, but 2 of those strands per transformer seems to be about all that is practical. But, you're right, I should have given those specs as well.
Thanks for watching, my good man, and rail-on!

It’s hard for me to watch 12 mins just for stringing two strands of LEDs.
Hey thanks for the post! Actually, the episode is not about stringing two strands of LED's. That would be a very short video indeed! Rather, the parts you may have skipped over are the difference between color tempuratures for lighting, types of lighting to use, and the technical differences between LED strips. There's a segment of our community that wants to know that sort of thing, so I make sure and include it.
Sure appreciate yoiu watching the episode, and for the feedback! Rail-on my friend!
BigDaddyI'm a subscriber and a fanboy of MRVP. All comments on the videos there are moderated. By the time your comment is visible, you've lost interest in continuing the discussion.
Probably off topic, but now that you bring up comments, many of them are actually questions relating to the videos. Most frustrating, at least to me, are the relatively few answers.
So, this is where the discussion is for a video service you have to subscribe to?
Obviously, the only comments are going to be from subscribers.
Why isn't the discussion there, with other subscribers?
OK, I get it, it's supposed to get my interest up, so I subscribe to find out "what's everybody talking about"
Comments on MRVP are more for feedback on a video, or to post a question that hopefully will be picked up in the next video, like Ask MRVP or Cody's Viewer Mail segment. It's not really a discussion forum like here. Nor, really, should it be, it's bad enough there are 4 or 5 popular model railroad forums, don't have the time to add any more (I gave up all the others anyway, wasting too much time participating on forums and not enough on actual modeling), and certainly not a second compelte one from the same source.
Questions on something seen in an MRVP video can be asked and answered without necessarily having seen the video - ask clever enough questions and you may do Kalmbach's marketing for them, if someone askes a question aout a method that sounds interesting, it may very well drive someone who isn;t a subscriber to sign up so they can check it out. So there's plenty of incentive to keep the forum component of MRVP limited to comments on something seen in the video and saving the back and forth rsponse sort of things for here where everyone, even non-subscribers, can see the conversation.
