Evening Diners,

TF be careful not to incur the wrath of Mr. Otte otherwise you might end up in the Cooler too!Laugh

I too feel bad for Ulrich, what's politically correct for him doesn't exactly line up with MRs policies, I understand that MR is just trying to prevent the flamethrowers from coming out, but as an individual having your voice silenced can be quite unnerving, all I can say is hopefully whatever Ulrich is dealing with gets better soon.

Well today was an interesting day at the Y, see we charge the dues either the 1st or 15th of every month, first caller was mildly peeved but understanding, second caller was really, REALLY peeved, after being cut off a half dozen times I told the lady to calm down or I'd hang up, she calmed down long enough for me to explain that I cannot accept payments over the phone that's YMCA policy, she decided that she should call Metro and complain, I told her that she could do that but it won't change the fact that she must come in to make a payment.

Lastly the last hour I was training with Amber the Bang Head, a lady came in to exercise, when I went to scan her in the computer told me she has a termination notice on her account, I told her about it, she explained that she paid her dues so it shouldn't be on there, then Amber told be to "shut up because I'm stupid and don't know what I'm talking about" as she finally puts her phone down after staring at it since she got to work, smartphone usage is against company policy, anyways I proceed to allow her to handle it.

Meanwhile I get a call about canceling a membership, I am trying to tell the guy that he must come in to fill out a cancellation form when amber starts yelling, I mean YELLING, at the lady with the termination notice, as soon as I get off the phone I calmly ask the lady if she would leave her name and number and I'll have my supervisor (the program director) call her to straighten it out, she says yes and thanks me for my professionalism, being around the hotel/hospitality industry I've learned you have to be nice to guests to get nice back otherwise you'll have plenty of shouting matches to have as a spectator sport.

Sorry for the rant

Anyways I got my paycheck today!

I was showing my coworkers the picture of me in my suit, one of the girls that's a lifeguard loved the tie, she got confused on why I went to prom when cause she thought I was like 27-28 years old?! Laugh

Top O Page!

Go ahead and put a whole keg out on the doorstep for Ulrich and let's tap a few barrels for us!

Steve

Henry  I feel bad for Ulrich too.  He and his lovely wife Petra (I hope I spelled that right) have had a plate of Hell on their hands.  I have talked to him on the side only a few times in the past and will keep that in confidence.  All I can say about him is he is a very prideful man yet humble and a very respectful man in my book.  I would help them if I could.

Evening all, it is still light out here on the coast and the sunset was beautiful.

I think anyone with health issues has a very tough go. It would be hard to earn your keep never mind get ahead. At least Ulrich is getting good health care.

I was forced out of work for health reasons (not my choice) and didn't miss a beat as far as income went as I was a year from retirement anyway. I know I would not be where I am today if not for good health in my first fifty years. I had lots of offers from my employer to come work on contract in management after I retired and had big plans to do so, these health issues can come out of left field before you know what hit you, I was unable to.

The magic # for the playhouse demolition was 395Kilos/870Lbs. Seeing as how there were only two participants I'll treat you both to a sunset Surf and Turf. If I am around and you pass by this way I'll take you out for a real one.

I have been to the Chicago Museum of Industry twice, it is very cool.

Big Daddy there is a B&W series on You-Tube called "The Silent Service" it is pretty good. It reenacts real stories. There are a lot of familiar faces in the roles before they were famous.

They say it is going to rain, I'll believe it when I see it, we sure need it and so do I, that is the only way I'll get back in the train room.

TF, came across this today Johnny Cashes last performance, two months before he died.

I really like the song "Sunday Morning Coming Down" it has been done by quite a few artists over the years.

Daughter has a Tutor here tonight, her math dropped to a 93% from 98% and she asked for a tutor, so he comes twice a week. Her marks have shown improvement so it is paying off. All her other grades are just about perfect so she wasn't happy about math. She has been getting lots of offers from schools around the world. Pathology is her current interest. I think Medicine of some sort will be it.

Herrinchoker, I have not heard of that before and did some reading up on it "GYP" it is, at least on the forum. The British used it referencing some of their hounds. I won't go into details.Laugh

Good morning all.  Flo, I could really use a western omelet and a side of wheat toast this morning.  Can I get a second one in a critter proof to go box?  With all the alcohol left outside for Ulrich, he's got to be feeling pretty tipsy by now with nothing to eat! I sure hope he comes inside soon.  Diversion and conversation can be good stress relief.  Ulrich, if you're out there, we're thinking of you.

Personally, I think Steven Otte does an excellent job here along with Tom Stage. I'm glad we enjoy a moderated forum. I've seen what can happen on other forums where the rules are non-existant or very loosely enforced. I believe we all owe our moderators a free slice of pie and a root-beer float.

Good morning.  A western omelette sounds kind of good, too bad I don't have an appetite in the morning.  I'll just have a black coffee, thanks.  The times I was in Chicago I never did ride the L.  I seen them all over.  It would be better to ride in that Pullman though Ed.

I learned the brake discs on the front of my truck are wearing thin at the dealer yesterday.  I suppose I'll turn some wrenches today while work is slow.  It would be better to take care of them now before they start grinding.

Good Morning All,

17F this morning, not the 60's we had in Sebring.  I got back early because everything broke. The usually reliable Audi picked up some fault we couldn't cure in the injection, and the 23 after winning it's sprint race was found to have bent the exhaust valves on a mechanical overrev. Quite unusual. I left Sunday morning got to just south of Mooresville N.C, and did the rest yesterday. About 20 hours total driving time with stops every couple of hours. Of course now my knee is swollen a bit and I can't walk well. As others have said - getting old is not for sissies.

Chicago is another place I have avoided. Went to boot camp at NTC Great Lakes and had a 12 hour pass so we went to the city. It was at the height of the great unpleasentness of the early 70's so it was not a good time. I have been through many times since but never spent time there.

didn't do much last night but relax a bit after getting home but I did start on the PECO turnouts that are shorting across the frogs on the layout. I have found 4 that short for sure and will probably just do all of the medium and long turnouts for safety. I tried filing the first one but quickly decided I could do just as well or better if I used the Dremel with a bit of caution. Tonight I will start with the epoxy to fill the divots after I route the frogs out.

Hope the rest of you, especially Ulrich are doing ok.  Cheers, J.R.

I dug out some pictures from a Navy Pier trip, I think about 10 yrs. ago?

North side of the pier, looking back at the city:

South side of the pier, looking back at the city:

Big ferris wheel on the pier:

The "L" kind of goes around the downtown Loop, could be a fun ride, I've never done it.

Have a great day!

Mike.

WELCOME

Jeffrey's Track Side Diner - APRIL,  2019

The Diner is being tied-down and restocked with delicious provisions as I type. While Chicago will be our base of operations we will visit many of the sights of this area that are rich in history.

From the the building of the early canals and railroads, the State of Illinois holds a treasure of fascinating stories and events. CHICAGO, the crossroads of railway commerce!

Chicago???

Had I known that, I might have volunteered to open the Diner. I am not a Diner regular, but I sure am a forum regular and probably one of the few who actually grew up in Chicago. Born and raised there for 23 years till I married and moved to the suburbs.

Anyhow, since this is a trains forum, someone's gotta show some pics of railroad bridges. So, how about the two double track bascule bridges (BOCT and SCAL) at 16th Street and the double mainline PRR lift bridge at 21st Street?

It's not my policy to discuss admin actions toward other Forum users, but in this case, there is nothing official going on, so I feel free to do so.

Ulrich is not, and has not been, moderated, banned, suspended, censored, edited, or otherwise penalized in any way. All I did was remind him that he has been warned, in the past, when talking about violence and unrest in his country, not to ascribe those acts to members of any particular ethnic, religious, national, or political group. I didn't even delete or edit the post in which he broke that particular rule, because I know that when I do so, he tends to get in a snit and storm off in a huff... which he did anyway.

His absence from this thread is entirely self-imposed. He'll come back when he's satisfied that he's stayed away long enough to teach me a lesson.

Steven, while I don't know any of the particulars of this case, I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your efforts.

I belong to an architectural engineering forum which is un-moderated.  After a steady stream from some members, unhappy with the present administration in Washington, making political comments on just about every forum topic, it has become almost unreadable.  What's maddening is that the comments almost never have anything to do with the forum topics.

I appreciate this forum because it's one of the few where I can get information about my hobby without all the mess on other sites.  I also appreciate the forum members who are knowledgeable about railroading who are happy to help amateurs like me.

Keep up the good work.

Good morning, it is another glorious day on the West Coast.

Woke up to see this on the screen, shipping in two weeks. I will not be getting both of mine together as the other one I ordered will be a few weeks behind. I am looking forward to getting them.

Image may contain: 1 person

I also really appreciate the civility of this forum and the job done by Steven O. Yes

I am sitting here right now enjoying a rather painful day from my arthritis. I have lots I want to do today and will make myself get going. The funny thing is an old co-worker of mine sent me this video just as I was starting to feel sorry for myself. He must have sensed a disturbance in the force.Laugh

So here I go.

All the best to all.

OK then.  So this is all Ulrich's thing.  So, how Ulrichs post is completely gone?  I didn't think any of us could completely delete our post.

Sure, you can go back and edit it, even erase everything that's in it, but a blank post remains, your name, avatra, etc, all there with no post in the box.

I didn't think you could erase everything, with no trace of you even being there.

Confused

Nice video Brent. I haven't seen the movie "Mule", so this must be in the movie?

You know.... for my own peace of mind, I feel the need to man up and say an apology to all.  I guess I fed into the kicked off the Forum scenario last night.  I have to admit I went about assuming half a story.  I'm man enough to know that usually doesn't pan out in the end.

I don't think it was the case here now but even if someone was to be suspended, I'm sure there would be a just reason for it.  I was dismissed for a while at one time way back.  There was a reason, I had it coming.

I also feel the need to give appreciation for the good job done here, keeping this Forum enjoyable and on track for the reason we all come here.

TF

My statements above, by no means change the fact, I like Ulrich and think he's a great guy.

I really don't know where this "deleted post" theory is coming from?

I spend a great deal of time (too much, actually) reading and re-reading posts here in the MR Forum and I have not seen any replies from Ulrich in the Diner since March 6th.

Seeing that I hosted last month I particularly kept watch on things in the Diner. After March 6th, there were no further replies from Ulrich.

He did post, as I displayed in the screen capture earlier in this thread, on March 25th  to the "Trade-Offs Between Scales" thread.  You can click on his screen name, then go to recent activity and all his recent posts are listed there.

I hope that helps to clear things up?

Cheers, Ed

Afternoon folks.....

Steven Otte
His absence from this thread is entirely self-imposed. He'll come back when he's satisfied that he's stayed away long enough

Not the first time he has done that....  Frankly there is no one that the forum can't nicely survive their not being here.  I add my voice to the others that have mentioned that they appreciate the excellent work you do to keep this place a sane and friendly place to be in.

I could be one that might spend a bit of time argueing politics if it was not prohibited.  I have some very strong opinions on current politics and such.  I very much appreciate the kind and gentle tone you keep here that is welcoming to all.  I did leave the forum a couple times in past years due to some very unkind things that were politically oriented that happened in here.  I do my best to keep my personal ideas to myself and enjoy the great moderation you do to keep it a friendly place to talk!

'nuff said!

Back on topic of Chicago..........I was born in Chgo when Roosevelt was alive and still President and still vaguely remember hearing His voice on the radio. Also not seeing My Dad or uncles around for some yrs., which now have been gone for many, many yrs. But have many fond memories of growing up in Chgo. If you weren't tough skinned or could take care of yourself.......you would not last long where I grew up. I also watched from a car window when they brought the U505 to the Museum of Science &  Industry.......long time ago for Me. Been living in the Burbs for the past 39 yrs.

OK, I give up, never mind, It's gotta be me, he made a post in here at the end of last months diner, I seen and Brent seen it.

I give up......I will never mention it again.  What was I thinking?

On to other things.  Back to Chicago!  No....wait...I'll stay in WI.  I mean the diner, back to Chicago!

I was always fascinated about the huge rail yards in Chicago.  Has to be a logistics nightmare.  But I suppose, you work there every day, it's just another day.

Great video Frank.  I wonder how many times, during the peak boating season, that massive piece of iron is raised and lowered?

Kind of makes you laugh, all of that so a couple little tiny sail boats could get through!

Well I got the brakes on my truck done. I am now safe again for America's roads and highways.

I wish I could contribute more here with Chicago pictures that I know I have somewhere.  I looked through everything digital, even old phone chips.  Judy thinks the last time we went to Chicago was before our phones took pictures and the old school pictures are somewhere down in storage.

Mike I look at it this way.  If those big steel Bridges didn't go up and down for the boats. I would have nothing to watch when I go to Prescott for a beer overlooking the BNSF Bridge on the St. Croix.  That's the whole reason I go thereYes

Approximately 50 times per year in total. During the Spring boating season, all of the downtown Chicago bridges (20 of them) are raised in order over a 90 minute period on Wednesdays and Saturdays from late April through the end of June. The process is reversed in the Fall from mid-September through early November.

Just so you know, I'll be off tomorrow, celebrating my birthday. I'll be 54, which may make me seem like a spring chicken by model railroader standards, but I can tell you it definitely feels like I'm rolling on the downhill side of life's journey. So far, at least, the brakes aren't smoking. While I'm gone, everyone have fun, and enjoy a slice of cake, on me.
