Unfortunately, we ( pet owners) eventually get to a point where we must decide if we should prolong their misery or put them down.

We all love our pets, but keeping them suffering in pain because we love them is not being kind. Our pets' lives are extended by the care we give them. Unfortunately, too often that care is extended for far too long.

Howdy...

Brent ... That sounds like a very frightening experience with the huge bolder on the highway.  I’m glad you avoided a serious accident.

Ken ... It is very sad  about Sparkie. Unfortunately, we ( pet owners) eventually get to a point where we must decide if we should prolong their misery or put them down.  As TF described , it is heartbreaking when that happens. We have done that with both dogs and cats. If we don’t have them put down, later we feel guilty for making them suffer until they finally died a painful death. When we do have them put down, we feel guilty for doing that. Can’t win .  Very sad.

I can appreciate what you are saying Dave.

My daughter stopped by last weekend and somewhere in between conversation she asked me how my phone was working.  I said it's working kind of slow.

She said you have an Android smartphone it shouldn't be working slow let me see it.

She grabbed it out of my hand and showed me the crap that was on it.  I had over 500 temporary files.  Close to 200 YouTube files.  And the list goes on and on for the crap she cleared out of my phone.

Your phone is a mini computer she said. You will find it works better now.  What she did took about 60 seconds, at least it seemed like that.

You have a good point Dave..... good information

NWP SWP
you need to talk to an expert about ensuring your files are safe and probably/possibly getting a new machine.

Hi Steven and Ken,

I am equally inept when it comes to computers, but before splurging on a new computer I would suggest that you take the old one to a computer shop and ask them if the problem is mechanical or if the computer is simply overloaded with useless programs.

Here is the layman's explanation: Over time your PC will accumulate dozens if not hundreds of programs that clog up the system. In many cases you didn't deliberately download the programs. They just come with other stuff you may have looked at or opened. Most of the stuff is not malicious but it probably has been downloaded without your knowledge. These programs will often start automatically when you turn your computer on. The more programs, the longer it takes for the computer to start, and then everything takes longer to process because the computer is trying to perform so many tasks at once with all these programs running. Eventually it just can't cope.

My computer is about 10 years old and it was working fine but a few months ago it started to really slow down. Then it just plain quit. I figured the hard drive was kaput. I took it to a local repair shop and they figured out that the hard drive was fine. The problem was that the computer was simply trying to do too many things at once. They cleaned everything out and then reloaded the Windows operating system. When I got it back it worked like it did when it was brand new!

You will have to reinstall the programs that you commonly use that are not in the normal Windows offerings, but you would have to do that with a new computer too. It is crucial that you keep all of your program licenses and passwords or you will have to buy them again. It is also crucial that you have backed up all of your important files because they will be dumped just like the junk that you are trying to get rid of when the computer is cleaned.

The best thing is that this process is cheap. I paid $85.00 to get my computer working like new.

CudaKen.  The exact symptoms you are describing is exactly what happened with our Nel-Bell, that was her nickname,  our Nellie. "Goose"

It got really tough in the end.  Not only her external problems but she whined at night from her achy joints.  It's a very hard thing to do.  We cried hard.

At a certain point you can't prolong it.  It just gets worse the longer you wait.  It's so hard to do.  You just have to swallow hard and do it.  I don't know what else to say...I am so sorry.

The history on this old steam locomotive is fun.  I just dug in a little deeper and read some more.

Feel free to add pictures of CA / NV.

Not a picture, but a video of the true star of the TV series "Petticoat Junction" - the one and only Hooterville Cannonball engine # 3, now serving as Sierra RR # 3 in Jamestown, CA.

I felt the need to dig up an old bone from days ago.

Ulrich it was kind of ironic you posted this post a few nights ago.  I watched the video and enjoyed it,  Thanks.  The Steamer #3 pulling around the red caboose.  She is an old movie star.

The night you posted this I watched Little House On The Prairie- Runaway Caboose.  It was a yellow Caboose but the same Steam Engine #3.

The Steam Engine that is Sierra Railroad California now had a busy job all through the years.  This Steam Engine was in a lot of weekly series and a lot of movies.  It was used frequently is probably why she still runs so good today.  Machinery likes to keep moving.

My Judy always likes to watch Little House On The Prairie every night.  I saw the same number 3 Steam Locomotive again today when Charles and Mr. Edwards rode the train to the railroad job transporting nitroglycerin back in the 1800s before it was put into a solid.

I looked up the history of The Cannonball.  There is a lot to itYes

TF

Saint Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba was on the side of the tender on Little House.  On some films the cowcatcher on this steamer was painted red.

When I flew, way back in another life, I would test the metal of the lady in the passenger seat with a few rolls and spins. I always had the barf bag ready just in case.

I have a vivid memory of a flight from London to Rotterdam in one of those 50 seater jets. Shortly after take-off, the pilot announced some rough weather ahead and asked for our understanding, that neither food nor drinks would be served during the flight. I was the only one who regretted that, all other passengers made good use of those bags.

Happy times!

Have you checked with a used book store?

None around in my neck of the woods. Used books are no business here.

That's too bad. We have a couple of used bookstores around here that buy books. They only give you about $0.25 on the dollar for what they sell them, but, as my mother always said, "It is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick."

Good morning from a Sunny West Coast, it is 0c with winds gusting to 100kmh.

Welcome back Galaxy, still working at the hotel?

The kid had a doozie of a rough ride going down into Ottawa last night as there was quite a storm going on. He said stuff was flying around inside the plane everywhere. I wonder why people don't stow their gear as the flight attendants ask them to. I was on a flight to Hawaii from Oahu once and the flight attendant hit the ceiling of the plane as he was announcing the rough weather ahead on the big island. I'm always hoping they don't charge extra for that kind of fun.Mischief

When I flew, way back in another life, I would test the metal of the lady in the passenger seat with a few rolls and spins. I always had the barf bag ready just in case.Laugh

Garry, too bad about the slide slowing your trip home. I was coming down the Fraser Canyon at 0300hrs in the pouring rain in the early 1980s and a rock the size of a large house had rolled onto the highway. I came around a curve and had to slam on the brakes. I was able to just drive around it and continue on my way over the rubble with the truck. I didn't waste any time getting out of there as small rocks were rolling down all around.  I was the first one to come across it so I stopped and called the police at the next inhabited place I found, the highway and rail line was closed for a week as they had to blow the rock into manageable pieces and stabilize the rest of the cliff above the highway. I keep thinking about how close I came to being under that thing. The only other car I came across was a guy that had been following me quite a ways back, he also had to hit the brakes in a hurry, like me it was much faster to just go by it than to try and back up.

Well, I think today I will first burn off the 700 calories that were in the bottle of Cab Sav I had last night by riding the bike and then start soldering LEDs for the RH. If the wind dies down a bit, I'll take a dog for a long walk later before I have to pick up my daughter from school at 1530hrs.

All the best to all.

Good Afternoon!

Good to see you back in this place, GeePee35 aka Galaxy!

Nice sunshine today - lots of flowers are stickung out their little buds. It´s nice to see some color again after months of a brownish grey! The sky above us is filled with birds on their way to Scandinavia - a sure sign that Spring ist starting to spring!

We have started our pairing down job. After only a few hours, there are three piles - a big one marked dumpster, a much smaller one which says "must keep" and a tiny one marked "sell". We aim at cutting down out gear by half (minimum) and that´s not including the furniture we most likely won´t be taking with us. Although we don´t yet know exactly when the move will be up, it´s good to get an early start on sorting out things. I´ll be heading to the community dump tomorrow, with a couple of old electronic/electric things which are not broken, but of no use any longer. Tons of books will follow. I talked to the local library to donate the books, but they are not interested. Fine with me!

Something to enjoy!

How about New York and New York State for March 2019?

Happy times!

Galaxy, I use a Samsung S9 for accessing the forum, I also used an older S4 (both using different versions of the Android Operating System), try using the "desktop site" option in the hamburger menu in Chrome.

Hopefully that might help!

Galaxy! welcome back and happy birthday.  Sorry to hear about your knees.

As I understand it, the IT people are working on the Kalmbach site and they have their work cut out for them.  At times no one can access the site, posts disappear and they made the electronic access available to everyone until they figure out what to do about it.

We have had 30 mph wind gust all night long.  The power went out in the middle of the night but it is back on now.  At least its sunny today.

GeePee35

Hello All!

I'm formerly known as Galaxy, and I'll try not to stir up trouble. Mr. Otte, I'm sure will watch my posts to be sure.

I came in under a new name as my old name had problms accessing from my smart phone. Looks like this name, as well, I have problems accessing from my smart phone. Mr. Otte put me intouch with a lovely lady who tried to help, but said it looked like a registration problem. SO I've registered anew, and I still seem to have problems. Maybe this site isn't compatible with Samsung's Android platform? I never had such problems before on my motorola smart phone, this site worked like a charm. I couldn't even sign up on the samsung, I had to resort to this lold ancient slow computer we have here. Maybe Mr. Otte can have someone look into it yet again.....??

have a great day everyone!

-GeePee35, formerly known as galaxy

Welcome back, Galaxy! I'm sorry, but your message sat in the moderating queue all weekend, so it appeared a couple pages back. Hopefully this reply will make people scroll back and read it.

I'm afraid I can't help with technical issues. I barely understand the Forum software. Call the same lovely lady you spoke to before.

For everybody else... is it too early to discuss where the Diner will be moving later this week?

Good morning.

NWP... I suspect "auto correct" gave you a late night snake. ...... Some auto corrects are laughable like that one. Smile, Wink & Grin ... Edit.   You corrected it.

We went to see Shelley's Mom in Nashville yesterday. Unfortunately, she did not recognize us. Sad.

On the way to Nashville, we had to detour off of I-24 because of a major mudslide close to the city.  All inbound lanes are completely blocked. It will be at least a week before the road can be re-opened .

Just got up for a late night snack and saw your post TF,

I'm sorry but I actually am about as clueless as to a computers workings as one of my generation can be, I would suggest this if Ken can see the forum, if you didn't install any new programs or anything, you didn't visit any strange websites, you didn't download ANYTHING, and you didnt loose any data then it could be a fluke, if you did install or download a potentially malicious program or file boot in safe mode and delete the file OR if you were lucky enough to have a restore point recent enough boot in safe mode and restore to that point ONLY do this if you have a backup of your files and you haven't created anything important since the restore point, by restoring your computer will basically time travel back to its state when the restore was created so technically it should undo anything caused by the crash and theoretically prevent the crash.

Like I said I'm no expert, crashes aren't ALWAYS a sign of doom, but usually if the system is old enough and if you start having repeating events then yeah you need to talk to an expert about ensuring your files are safe and probably/possibly getting a new machine.

Well I hope my 2 bits help! Good luck, I know computer issues stink!

Yes! The 2860 in BCR dress (not the fancy one from PWRS).

Evening from the West Coast, it is 5c, clear and windy.

Happy B-Day to Ken, hope it was a good one.

Well, the kid took off 45 minutes ago and I went out on the driveway to wave goodbye and took some pics of the plane going over. It takes about ten minutes from takeoff to the West until he flies over the house.

There he goes off to the East.

His flight plan takes him right over Track Fiddlers house. I told him not to let anyone flush over Minnesota.Laugh

I opened a bottle of McWilliams Cab Merlot to drown my sorrows.CryingLaugh

We had some really good talks while he was here and as always the best one was on the way to the airport. He so has his act together.

Had a big group in last night after the dog show and had a huge feast of Chinese food. We have been getting together for years on Saturday nights and all our kids are now in their twenties except for my daughter (17)  and all of them have been coming since they were newborn babies. What made last night special was every one of all our kids was here last night. It has been a long time since that has happened. This week finds some of them leaving for Japan, France, and destinations throughout North America.

I think we will be eating Chinese food for a few days.DinnerLaugh

Hope everyone had a good weekend, I did.

All the best to all.

Good Evening,

Happy Birthday Ken!!

TF, that sea bass does look good. I like black cod and there is a restaurant here that does it with a miren sauce that is really great.

There is a cold warning out tonight, the windchill is -36F right now and is expected to get down to -41. Sure has been a cold February.

We have been busy today doing small touch up paint jobs around the house and cleaning up in the office. We sure seem to accumulate a lot of stuff.

Soon it will be time to watch the next installment of Victoria, another great BBC historical drama.

Keep warm,

CN Charlie
