Good Evening!

One of those days I should have stayed in bed. My pair of galsses is driving me nuts! There seems to be no way around buying a new set of spectacles!

Bang HeadBang HeadBang Head

Jimmy - I am sorry to hear about you losing your job! However, as awkward as the situation is at the moment, I am quite confident that you will find a good job in no time. You are a good man!

Are you anywhere near Pittsburgh? Check with the Port Authority of Allegheny County - they operate bus lines as well as light rail in the Pittsburgh area. Maybe a job driving a trolley would be thrilling ...

Good luck!

Happy times!

Good Evening, Crew! Today was another early Spring-like day in the upper 40s, clear, and with bright sunshine. I'm wondering if we'll have much of a Winter here in NE Ohio. Nah...never did move my workbench to find that GP7 gear. I did go to the grocery store for some stuff including stacks of cat food for our furry family members, though. I'll reserve tomorrow for moving the bench and getting back to work on the three-diesel fleet. Have a good one! Smile, Wink & Grin

so I need a new set of beepers. That will be roundabout $700,

That is high.

In the US we have chains of optical stores and we have a independent optical stores.  The later are hugely expensive.  The Big Box stores like Costco and Price club are even cheaper than the chains.

It is the same with hearing aides, which can cost several thousand dollars.  My friends in Florida say Costco is the place to go.

I have heard of people buying glasses from China.  I have not looked into that, but for $700, I would.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and what ever Jimmy wants.

Jimmy Well it could be the best thing that could have happened to you? I lost a low paying job due to no fault on my behalf. ( I was told this by the manager that had to give me the ax ) But it led to the best job I had in hindesight far as money. In fact I was 27 same as you when it happned. Rather be 27 looking for work than 62 that is for darn sure!

Have any of you had dealings with Caboose in Denver? Not the old company but the owner for the last 2 years. Think about using them to repair my PCM Y6b and Big Boy.

Been Playing The Big Hook Tonight! Said way to many words that would get me a crack in the head with a skiltet to repeat here in the dinner! When the Trains Mojos goes bad, it goes really bad! Sigh

No, but if you search Youtube for Ken Patterson's latest What's Neat, it was filmed in the store, which sponsors the program.  The owner once owned a shortline railroad.

The last couple videos this year from Brasstrains.com, also mentioned people who work on brass locos.

Howdy .

TF ... I noticed your interesting thread about Casey Jones was moved to the section called Prototype Informtion for the Modeler. ....

Ken ... I have not dealt with Caboose Hobbies since it has a new owner. I would think it would be just as good.

Russ .... On my Proto 2000 GP7, I changed the wheel sets (gear, wheels, and axle). Same with other early Proto locomotives. Probably would have been cheap to just change gears, but I found a use for some of the wheels.

Everybody: ..... Happy Model Railroading.

Checking in from the Southern command,

Not much going on here, been quite relaxing. and quiet. The thug neigbors appear to be gone. That poperty has been a revolving door of ner'do wells.

will be coming back to KY on Monday via  a new way around Memphis since they have opened I-269 from i-55 to i-40E. We normally go 55 all the way to Charleston MO but we have to stop by Martin TN on the way home so we will go back to KY the "long" way

Hey all. I'm not doing well at all.  I got laid off and feel like a failure.

Hey Jimmy,

Did you get laid off because of something you did, or was the cause beyond your control. I suspect the latter. If so, you are being far too hard on yourself. Take a couple of days to recoup, and then "get atter again".

Life can be the pits sometimes. Dianne and I lost a son when he was 18, and we just lost Dianne's brother in law under truly tragic circumstances. There have been many other losses in our lives. We can choose to dwell on those things forever or we can choose to move on after a reasonable pause for reflection. Try to move on Jimmy. Look at it as an opportunity to get a better job.

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Evening folks,

Went to see 4141 and 1943 again with the whole family this time, on the way out I ran into our fearless leader at the MSMRC, Casey Leblanc, he had his kids in tow so he wasn't in a talkative mood.

Tomorrow I'm heading up to the club in the afternoon to do some trackwork.

I've got church in the morning and it's late so goodnight all!

Late evening Diners

Didn't quite fall asleep. Hopped out of the rack to get me one of those (I don't know bedtime teas) ... wifey showed it to me, I hope it does the trick.

My young Steven..... As I know you.... I know it wasn't intentional on your part but politics are strictly forbidden here.

Besides the fact,  DON'T let that crap consume you. It's just a waste of your time.

As the old saying goes, It Is what It Is and none of us can do a darn thing about it.  We just live our lives as best as we can.

My advice to you, have a big chicken enchilada or whatever food you have that looks good in the fridge, eat it and hit the rackDinnerZzz

Please reconsider before posting.

You blame the media for getting people worked up yet it would seem that you are the one who has had his fur ruffeled here.

Jimmy, even though I just get nipped by “the Black Dog” from time to time, (I think that trying to laugh at myself, and as an extension of that, “Beartoons", are my way of coping), I am in no position to give you any meaningful advice regarding your current position, but you can be rest assured, we’ve all been in our own “Bad Situations” no matter how hard we’ve tried to avoid them, and worst, not of our making!

However, I do take my hat off to you, in that you’ve identified and admitted to your negatives but what I suggest that you now make a list of your positive attributes, which I’m sure will far outweigh the negatives, starting with “A Good Bloke”.

Good luck,
Kindest regards, the Bear.Smile

Good Morning!

The first Sunday of the new year! Time for my big, unhealthy breakfast! Virtual food is very enjoyable - you can eat whatever you like and never gain an ounce!

Steven - although politics is supposed to unite people, it just does the opposite. That´s why we better stay away from it in here. We certainly all have quite a different view on issues, but out of mutual respect for each other´s opinion, we keep this as a politics free zone! I have to admit it is quite difficult not to get indulged in a political discussion these days, but let´s keep this place a realm of peace and quietness vs. the noise of politics.

May I suggest to revisited your post and take the first paragraph out of it?

Bear - I just love your "beartoons". Please keep them coming!

Happy times!

I just went out to the garage to work on my project, and it is 54 degrees out there!

.

WHAT ON EARTH? Why am I exposed to these arctic conditions on a weekend? I can't work in such frigid a climate.

.

Fortunately it is supposed to get up to 74 degrees today... I might survive.

Good morning, everybody ....

Particpating in the Diner is a priviledge provided by our host, Kalmbach Publishing Company. They allow off topic conversations, but we must adhere to Kalmbach Forum Policies. One of Steve O's duties at Kalmbach is to administer the Forum, and that includes policing comments to be sure everybody adheres to Forum Policies.  When an individual breaks the rules, Steve O has the right to take appropriate actions. Steve O is the "judge" who decides if an indiviudal broke a rule. ...

So ......... Read the Forum Policies from time to time to make sure you understand them. The rules are very clear.

Here is the policy regarding politcal conversations. The language is very clear.

"No political discussions or signature messages. We know, railroads are sometimes affected by politics. However, we’ve found that political discussions almost always turn into arguments. We have a common thread of being interested in railroads. Don’t let that common bond be destroyed by political differences."

Good morning all,

Another day at the southern command. Not much on tap for today. I will indulge in that virtual unhealthy breakfast! Give me a huge thing of bacon , hasbrowns and a waffle. We will go in to Oxford MS again today to visit the subject of the wife's book.

Guess I missed the political post, good, I try to ignore politics anyway.

I hate when that happens. I lost a thread I was replying to the other night that way. I think you told me where that one went too. At least I know where to go look now when that happens.

Posting from your phone I'm sure is different than on a computer. I have to actually go out of the Forum and come back in a different way to find the separated categoriesConfused

Watching youtube videos.

This one starts off as a pseudodrama with the engineer telling the captain it will take 5 hours to "get steam up" with coal.  They then discuss naval steam, powered by oil.  No coal to be seen anywhere. Somewhat similar to locomotive steam.   The engine room sailors were filthy dirty and it looks like the pipes are covered in asbestos.

The next film up was a tour of the USS Iowa, the tour guide claimed it used sea water for steam.  If so, what happens to the salt?  The British film and WW2 destroyer made a big deal about using distilled water.   There wasn't much applicable to MR there, so I won't link to it.  Also the youtube guy didn't know what or when VJ Day was.The fire (gun) control room was amazingly complex.

Life was easier and there were only 3 networks and they all told us the same thing.  Here is my history lesson.

An AM radio station in Baltimore claims to have started the first talk radio show in the nation, in 1962.  It was the station owner, 2 news reporters and the sports reporter talking about local and national events.  The sports guy was a real character with a dense Baltimorese accent.  Analagous to a Cockney accent if you happen to be dining with the Queen tonight.  We actually listened to it, as part of social studies, in class in the 7th grade.  Nobody called anybody foul names.

We were encouraged to listen to it by our teachers, because it was the only place where you could here intelligent people disagree about issues and discuss those issues on TV or radio.  Back then it was done with facts, or at least opinions, and not dire predictions and insults.  This was before CNN, Fox, Agronsky and Co., Limbaugh, Hannity or Maddow.

Baltimore had competing newspapers back then.  My family read the Baltimore Sun, the paper of HL Menken, and looked down on The American.  I wish someone tasked me with reading them both and then forming an opinion.  No one did and only the Sun survived.  My impression was the competition was more on local politics, but I could be 100% wrong on that.

Menken was the Walter Cronkite of the 20's, only in the newspaper business.  Well maybe add a little George Carlin into the Walter mix.  He covered the Scopes Trial and had some colorful and politically incorrect descriptions of the locals. His name for the trial on teaching evolution would not pass the PC challenge today.
