That's funny you say that Dave. I am so allergic to blue cheese, it'll wind me up in the hospital. I prefer a creamy horseradish sauce with my prime rib or any other steak thereof that's what I'm talking about.... and another big man hug for you Dave. I hope things are coming along for you and your family, I can't imagine. I do see you are a very positive man though. I can admire that. Happy New Year to you and yours. May many blessings follow you into the new year. I admire your strength

Yes, blue cheese is not for everybody. I can only take it in small amounts or I will become a very loose character as it were.
Horse radish I can do! I like the hot version that clears your sinuses. My grandmother wouldn't eat red meat without it. She grew up in England when horse meat was about all that the proletariat could afford (that and mutton - yuk.) I guess the taste of the meat from a horse that had been working hard all its life was less than pleasant. It had to be disguised.
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
hon30critter I guess the taste of the meat from a horse that had been working hard all its life was less than pleasant.
Pretty much the same reason there's all the hot spices used with meats from the warmer climates, too.
For me an eighteen-year-old Scotch will work to kill off anything that's "off" in the meat.
TF, are you talking about the bridge thread in the Prototype Information thread? Still there as far as I know. In the interest of sharing burning bridges I'll present this video.
The bridge was set fire by a 19 yr-old trying to get attention. CN rebuilt it and had trains running over it in less than a month! Heck, it takes me that long just to take the trash bins out!
Cheers, Ed
gmpullmanIn the interest of sharing burning bridges I'll present this video.
Now I know how to build my next campfire!
The time lapse video of the bridge being rebuilt is really interesting too. There is a link to it in the upper right corner of the burning bridge video towards the end.
Thanks for the videos Ed.
Somehow I guess you took me wrong, it was all good

Track Fiddler, I don't understand your comment. Have I said something to offend you? If so, I apologize. Could you elaborate please.
You have been very supportive and I truly appreciate that. The last thing that I would want to do is offend you.
Hello again
Sometimes I do have trouble understanding you, TF. I'm sure you're talking OK. I'm just not hearing so well
[edit]
I thought TF was talking about ME Dave? Something about the bridge thread?
NWP SWPIts two thousand nineteen already!?!?!?
Keep livin' kid...
I remember all the crazyness of the Y2K "doomsdayers". Guys at GE were taking home 55 gallon drums so they could stock-up (hoard) gasoline and water in them.
People were buying generators because the power plants were going to shut down, planes were going to drop out of the skies and the banks were going to shut down with no computers. They were selling MRE meals and canned food like there was no tomorrow. One GE electrician had THREE HUNDRED gallons of gasoline in his garage!
Ninteen years ago! Hoo-haah. I remember it like it was yesterday. Now where did I set my drink down...?
gmpullmanNinteen years ago! Hoo-haah. I remember it like it was yesterday. Now where did I set my drink down...?
I don't suppose that drink was poured from a 55 gallon drum was it? Actually, the prospect of having a 55 gallon drum or three full of my favourite rye whiskey rather appeals to me! Fewer trips to the liquor store.
hon30critter Actually, the prospect of having a 55 gallon drum or three full of my favourite rye whiskey rather appeals to me!
I'm picturing something more along the lines of an oak cask, maybe. The stuff I drink would probably eat through a steel drum in days! Makes good track cleaner, though
Here's to 'ya, Dave (we need an "on the rocks" emoji) — Ed
Last I left I was allergic to to blue cheese..... true.
Nobody has said anything to offend me I've just been eating my shrimp my crackers and cheese and chicken enchiladas. Happy home camper here.
And now I'm eating achicken enchilada.... wouldn't you?
TF
A Mexican friend taught me how to make these things. If I could teach you how to make these. You would really like them!
Good morning, everybody .... Happy New Year. ...
Texas is a great place to start the New Year. I was born in Houston, TX. It is good to see so many interesting posts with comments and photos already this month.
May I suggest each of us start the year reading Steve O's "Forum Rules". We all want to be good citizens and stay out of trouble.
Dave ... Thank you for opening the forum.
Russ .. I just noticed you here for the first time. Belated welcome to you.
MLC .... You named some of the railroad companies with TX headquarters that are part of large railroad companies. ... Another was Fort Worth and Denver which was part of the Burlington Route.
We drove back home (Western KY) from southern Ohio on Monday. We had heavy rain for the first 250 miles of our 330 miles trip. At one point, the rain was very intense, and we had to park on the shoulder with near zero visibility. ... That was our "Northern Christmas" celebration with family members of Ohio and of Michigan. It was very enjoyable.
I hope to have time this month to continue making my coal mine on the layout.
Below is the Texas Zephyr.
Happy Model Railroading.

Happy New Year, all. Thanks for making it a smooth transition.
NWP SWP Steven, I know us old codgers are always offering you relationship advice you probably don't want, but here I go again.
You probably didn't mean it the way you said it, because it's a common turn of phrase. But it's important sometimes to think about the way we say things and what it means about how we think of them.
One does not "get... a girl." That makes it sound like you think of a girl as a prize to be won. A relationship runs in both directions. The girl, whoever she may end up being for you, expects the same things from a relationship that you expect.
Make yourself into a prize, and soon enough someone special will be trying to win you. :-)
Now that's all the advice a man who's had a total of 3 long-term relationships in his 53 years of life has to offer. My resolution this year is to stop being such a know-it-all.

Good Afternoon!
The sun has started to set here, ending a beuatiful sunny, but cold day. Life is back to normal now - the usual holiday cheer will have to wait for another 11 months to come back!
Steven O. - you are spot on! One just doesn´t "get a girl" - a trustful relationship is nothing one can buy at a store. That phrase sounds really cheap. There is some much involved to get that "butterfly in your stomach" feeling. And, whatever you, young Steven, try to achieve - it's finally the girl who decides to "get" you!
Take those words from someone who is going steady with the same gal for 35 years, over 34 years as a married man!
Happy times!

Morning (almost afternoon) folks,
Mr. Otte, I did not mean "get" in that sense I assure you.
Well it's getting near lunch time, see ya'll later.
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Heartland Division CB&QRuss...I just noticed you here for the first time. Belated welcome to you.
Why thank you, Garry! Sometime today, between cleaning up the kitchen and getting one of our cats ready for a vet appointment, I'll start working on replacing the axle gears on my Life-Like DL&W GP7. Have a great day, Crew!

Garry,
FW&D i could not think of that last night.
MKT was MKT Railway Company of Texas.
So you were born in Houston, I was born in Alvin. Grew up in Pearland.
Back on our tour, We are on Galveston island still as a crew works the molten sulfer train. There was ( may still be ) a huge pile of sulfer on Galveston island that bulldozers could run up and down.
we move to Northwest Houston out the old Hempstead Highway and we see an SP train making its way to Hempstead.
Afternoon folks!
Teaaaaaxis huh? That still part of the US???? (Kidding, just kidding guys!) Should be lots of good railroad stuff to see there!

Well said Steven O, I will be signing up at a well known "Over 50" dating site sometime this week to see what just may be out there around my area looking for a relationship. Took me half my lifetime to figure out that a couple is just that. Two people who each have the same feelings, needs, and desires. One saying that gets said in Scouts around the campfire when the "subject" of relationships gets brought up (older Scouts are generally obsessed with certain thoughts, just like other boys that age...) is:
Building a good fire and a good relationship are very similar. You take two logs, place them close enough together to keep each other warm, and far enough apart that they can both breath. Otherwise the fire goes out.
I'm hoping that my New Year's Resolutions may be productive for my having a happy rest of my life.....
Oh Steven O, your resolution is also one of mine... My youngest son gave me some good dating advise... Numbers one, three, and five are all the same.... LISTEN! I am trying to learn to shut up more and just be a good listener. Amazing what you can find out if you do!
Hope you all have a great day!

Evening Diners.... Young Steven, here's one for you.
A good relationship isn't just a given, it is earned. Sometimes the first one don't work, sometimes the second one don't work. If you are lucky enough to find the one that works, you are blessed by the Man Upstairs.
Found compatibility.... that's the only way I can describe it. My Judy and I have been together for 25 years. Everyday with Her is just as good as the first. She is my Best Friend.
I'm just glad I'm a worthy enough man to have Her. I would not trade all the riches of the world to lose one day with Her.
To find your Soulmate is a gift. One has to keep his eyes open, you never know when that gift might pass you by. You know when you find it. (end of message)
Wow Judy and I got ripped last night. I don't know what it is with the New Year's and how so many people decide they have to over indulge in food and alcohol until they feel like complete crap the next day.
You would think halfway intelligent people such as myself would learn from the previous year. Surprisingly enough, somehow we don't. We sure had a lot of fun though
So now, if anyone wonders why I didn't make sense for any portion of the evening last night.
Now you know......... TF
PS It's somewhat interesting how we type into our little boxes these days. Once it was just TV they had us looking into. Now they gave us more boxes. My Judy was typing to friends on Facebook last night, just as much as I was typing too.
10 years ago I didn't even know how to type
Speaking of Alvin TX, Here is a shot of the former ATSF Passenger Depot in Alvin. From here Passengers could go to Galveston or to Houston or points "north" like Rosenburg, Sommerville, etc. on up the GCSF line.
It was in pretty bad shape in 1991 but it has been refurbished by the Alvin Visitors bureau in recent years.

Alvin is also home of Nolan Ryan.
Look's like somebody leaned over the layout...... gonna need some glue to get that antenna back in place.
Rust...... It's a good thing !

My wife, made the mistake of "picking up the proverbial rock". When she did, ... I reached out and GRABBED her ! Sank my teeth into her ankle, and wouldnt let go !
Turn's out , her ankle was a DECOY !
She had me by my Stomach, before I figured out how to Excape !
Now, 11 year's later, She is Management.... and I'm Heavy Labor !

Mayhap it is not for everyone, but it was surely right for me. Most probably since I am so introverted that I would not want to be shared with another.

Good Evening Crew! Well, I never did make it to the workbench today. Being a retired geezer, I have bad inoperable spinal arthritis that can really just stop me even with the non-opioid pain medication that I take. We took our new feline family member, Grover the Cat, to the vet's earlier for vaccinations, blood work, etc. Next month he'll go back for booster shots and neutering after that. Then it'll be out other cat's turn for her vaccinations. Big vet bills, but hey, they're family and everyone gets medical care here. Good thing the vet's office is right up the street. Have a good night, everyone!
