Evenin' Folks!

Just thought I would drop by for a cup of decaf....  Been busy today getting caught up on things that should have been done a week or so ago.  Would have gotten more done but I had to take the two hour break to drive to Canandaigua to take care of my sister's kitties.  They are sweeties.....

Oh, my two kitties used to look like this:

That was taken at least 6 years ago as that was when I got rid of the old seat...  Well actually it now sits down in the crew part of the layout rooms down cellar.  Manét is the one on the right and Blackie is on the Left.  Here is Manét way back about 17 years ago when he first arrived at my house.  He was, and still is, a cutey!  He is my snuggle kittie every night.

I am currently printing the materials for the MLK Committee Fall Scholarship Fund Drive.  We will be sending out about 300 letters asking for donations.  Hope that will turn into another $24,000 we can give to needy, deserving students for college next year.

Oh, and for you that have never heard Jupiter from The planets by Gustov Holtz.  Turn on your best speakers and turn up the volume and give a listen!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz0b4STz1lo

Have a great evening out there!

73

Blackie gets his snuggle time by keeping me from getting things dine at the computer.  He loves to sit on my shoulder with me holfing him in my arms.....

We'll get there sooner or later!

Ken Big Smile Takes more than that to make me ill.  I got paid well to deal with phlegm.  But there was not enough money in the world that would have convinced me to be an OB-GYN, proctologist or podiatrist.

Spent 3 days at my SIL's in Virginia. The bedroom was too hot, the pillow was two high and I tossed and turned every night.  Got home with a "not enough sleep" headache and too tired to sleep.  Haven't experienced that in 10 years.  Was able to take a nap today and the headache is gone.

She lives in Port Republic where there was a 2 day Civil War battle that no one ever heard of.  Stonewall Jackson was almost captured on the first day and on the second day, he summoned one of his junior officers in the middle of the night.  The officer found him face down in bed, full uniform, boots and sword.

They were firing triple cannister (grape shot) shot at the Yankees and one of the homes in town, that was used as a hospital, still has blood stains on the floor.

MR I need to install a decoder/speaker on one of my small Bachmann 4-4-0 or 4-6-0.  The tenders are tiny.  I made a mess of taking apart a Vanderbilt tender, which turns out to have the opposite plugs of what I needed so I need to google up the parts diagram.

That is funny Ken. I agree, that is pretty quick for a living room going down the road.  When you're comfortable in your living room, you're not in that big of a hurry anywayLaugh

 Afternoon diners! Big Smile

Flo, get the gang and I a Beer and Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they want.

Henery I hope the comment about reading about my plegm was some what tongue in cheek. If not I am sorry I made anyone feel ill.

Feeling much better today. Nothing to turn anyone stomach came up to speak of. Whistling Airing out the house helped a lot today!

Ed I have posted this before but I was a Caddy guy my self. I had 3 Eldorados and 1 Deville. What made me a Lincoln guy was a jerk at a Cadillac Dealer ship. Was looking on there lot at the the new Cadillac but there where no prices tags? Jerk came out and I asked "Why are there no window stickers on the cars? Jerk said "If you have to ask how much they cost, you cannot afford them!" Got back in my 68 Road Runner and drove to the Lincoln dealership and bought my first Town Car. Drove it to the Caddy dealership, got out of the Town Car and gave the Jerk the bird!

Track Fiddler Hum, you can make a Caddy 500 CI engine haul. I installed Nitiors on my 1975 Eldo, recurved the distrboutor, HP fuel pump and 3" exhaust where it would fit. Won't say it was fast, but 15.4 in the quarter mile is not slow for a 5,000 pound car. Guess it was a quick living room. Smile, Wink & Grin

M1a Front Ran into the same problem I had 9 to 10 years ago. Could not get the motor seated to where it engauge the tower gear? Found the problem again after few trys. Ground wire that goes under the motor it self needs to be screwed down first, ground wire stuffed into a slot under the motor, then the insulation shelid goes down then screw down the motor!

 Later, Ken

Good Morning,

Another cool day here, won't get above 40F so Track Fiddler you can expect a few more cool days. By the way, nice Mustang. I've always been partial to Mustangs especially the '66 2+2.

Steven said a while ago that he had several outdoor cats. Not many of those left in rural northern Minnesota. Our friends live on a quarter section north of Thief River Falls. About 10 or 15 years ago the coyotes moved in and all the feral and outdoor cats 'disappeared'.  We don't have any around our neighbourhood either as we live near the river and a golf course where several Great Horned Owls are resident. Anyone who lets their cat out at night likley won't see it again. It is actually illegal to let cats roam in our city as it is with dogs.

Well time to get going as we are taking the MIL out for lunch in lieu of Thankgiving.

There's definitely nothing wrong with a Cadillac Ed. If you want to ride around in luxury and comfortability that's the way to go. It's like driving down the road in your living room.

My Grandfather drove a Cadillac. The one that sticks out in my head the most was the big black one in the sixties, when I was a little boy. It had the tall wings in back over the tail lights.

Good Morning...

I had my AC on yesterday and probably today as well. It was 88°F (31) here yesterday! Rain and cooler weather is supposed to arrive Wednesday.

Thanks for the Boston Cream Pie, Mr. Otte! Always has been one of my favorites. My dad used to make Boston Coolers (invented in Detroit?) these are like root-beer floats but made with Vernors. I prefered the root beer, or Orange Crush, thank you.

You're turning into a PRR fan, Ken? Not so bad, actually. They sure had a great variety of equipment. I'm glad you are supporting and helping your wife. Don't be too critical if she is being overly cautious about falling. The last thing either of you want to deal with now would be a broken hip! I try to be very careful and plan my steps carefully. Ed ..... That looks like a bad place for your cat to sit. I don't allow our cats anywhere near the model railroad.

That photo was from 1999 and the layout was pretty much bare plywood, Garry. Very rarely I'll allow Wilson to visit me in the layout area and he sleeps on the chair next to me while I'm w**king on models. He knows the rules.

Maybe tomorrow we will have some Boston Baked Beans now that we've all had our colonoscopies! I had mine in January and the doctor said I don't have to go back until 2028! Confused That IS something to crow about!

Native Americans had made corn bread and baked beans. The Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony learned these recipes in the early 1620s and likely added barley to the corn meal to invent New England brown bread.  At that time, molasses was added to local baked bean recipes, creating Boston Baked Beans. In colonial New England, baked beans were traditionally cooked on Saturdays and left in the brick ovens overnight. On Sundays, the beans were still hot, allowing people to indulge in a hot meal and still comply with Sabbath restrictions. Brown bread and baked beans along with frankfurters continues to be a popular Saturday night staple throughout the region even today.

Today is the anniversary of the wreck of the Sunset Limited near Palo Verde, Arizona, twenty-three years ago. One sleeping car porter was killed and seventy-eight passengers injured. The cause was sabotage and a suspect has never been found.

Enjoy the day, folks!

I forgot to mention that my b-day present from Mom will be ordered about the middle of the month. Of course, it will be a new railcar. Even when it comes, it will go to the paint shop for renumbering. The car will be based on a car that I saw in amodern  maintanance train that I saw about 2 months ago. However, it was in revenue service in the era that I model.

Brent that little golden retriever is so cute it melts my heart. Look at him, he fell asleep with his corn cob.

He is just nine months old and was snoring up a storm with that thing in his mouth. Sound asleep on a lazy Thanksgiving.

Evening all from a soggy West Coast. The whole household has been total deadbeats today including me and the dogs.

Got a few small jobs done around the house as we are going through one of those phases where everything is breaking and it's hard to keep up.

Ed, thanks for the video, sat down with a nice glass of Shiraz and watched it just now, beautiful. The leaves out here on the coast are still mostly green and on the trees, very unusual that they are still hanging on this late.

The kid thought he would be going to Cape Town to do this movie as the pieces were falling together. The shoot was from Dec 11 to the 26. It was to be all motion capture and he was really excited about it. He was to fly out of Ottawa to Toronto then via Paris to South Africa on a 26-hour trip. Then the shoot date got changed so that is the end of that as he wasn't about to give up his year at school. I am kind of glad as now he will be home for 3 weeks instead of 1 week over Christmas break. He was to fly back to Vancouver from S.A.

Happy Birthday to the FRRYKid and yes pass the cake and thanks. My intake is not keeping up with my outgo as I am still racking up tons of hours on the bike.

All I can say about the digital exam is my next Dr. is going to be chosen by the size of his/her hands.GrumpyLaugh We get PSA, stool, urine, and full blood workup once a year as standard practice along with the flu shot. It doesn't cost a cent so why not.

Two of the kids roommates are really good cooks and wanted to cook a Thanksgiving feast, so the kid gave them a $100.00 and the two cooked an amazing dinner for 15 of their University friends. He also pays one of his roommates to clean the house as well, more just to help him out than anything as the poor guy doesn't get any support from his parents. I think it is the parent's responsibility to make sure their children are educated and that includes University. Hopefully, the kid will contribute by working when they can, but usually, even at that, they need help along the way.

Young Steven, I like hearing about your "Babes-O-Plenty"Laugh Takes me back to my first 40 years of life and then I got married to my perfect wife. It took me 40 years to find her. I lead a pretty active life and I was and am a long way from being a gorgeous hunk, however, I was always was being chased and never was without a girlfriend even if it was just to have someone to share things with like traveling. I firmly believe the more you participate in life, the more people you meet with similar interest and that can give you some good companionship along the way.

The only advice I can give as far as finding a wife goes, and I have had a few thank me for this advice is, if you ever find yourself asking yourself "do I really want to marry this girl", the fact that you are asking the question in the first place is your answer. After forty years and a few girlfriends, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind about wanting to marry gal I did. I am just as happy 23 years later. The fact that she is the spittin image of Meryl Streep doesn't hurt either.Smile, Wink & Grin

Last time we took the kid to the airport we were in the Starbucks line and this really cute little Asian girl (about 20) came up and asked her if she was Meryl Streep and could she get a picture together.Laugh  That made a bunch of other people say, oh wow, you really do look like her. Happens quite often.

Well, Meryl and my daughter are about due home from riding the nags, so I best get cooking or maybe I'll forget and we'll have to go out for Thanksgiving Sushi. We had the big dinner last night, never the less Happy Thanksgiving to those in countries celebrating today. ( I think it is eight other countries today) I stand to be corrected.

All the best to all.

let me put what I said into context, I meant "all over me" by asking a bunch of questions and acting like I was some sort of celebrity or something. Anyways, not much else going on. Happy birthday FRRYkid!

That said, you might lose out to the phlegm.  Speaking of which, my uncle in law? delighted in annoying my uncle, who was a wine connisseur.  "Bob I like this wine, it cuts the phlegm well"   I use that line every chance I get.  If you know any wine snobs, use it.

While I'm on a medical roll, I found out my sister in law wears a CPAP mask.  This is the same sister in law that I asked a couple years ago to encourage my wife to exercise and go to the gym.  She looked at me like I just made the most obscene suggestion you could imagine.

I just found out her two other sisters use CPAP masks, and their brother did, who.....well let me just say, if you are a guy, you shouldn't look like you are carrying triplets. I saw him at a family gathering and all I was shocked.  I hadn't seen him in 6 months and all I could think was he was a walking heart attack.  He had one a couple months later.  In less than a year, he died with his CPAP mask on.

After the finger and the colonoscopy, you need to go the gym

Took my Machine out for a romp this weekend. Saturday was the last day for Cars and Coffee. A huge classic car get together every first Saturday of the month in Shakopee. Going to have to put her away for the winter soon.

Stopped by my buddy Erv's. He's a Vietnam vet and puts his flag out in the front yard quite a bit. He's always happy to see me  and I'm always happy to see him as well. How appropriate, American Muscle under the American Flag..... sweeeeeeet.

The stripe on 69 Mach ones are reflective chameleon. They are black during the day, gold at dusk and bright reflective white at night. I only like when they're black.

Take care Rail Fans.... Fiddler

Yeah, I tried to get one of those when I actually turned 50, and thanks to my excessively euphemistic phrasing, ended up getting a colonoscopy instead. Tongue Tied Which found some issues, so I guess a little misunderstanding can be a good thing.

I get regular colonoscopies and they have found polyps about 1/2 the time. You are preventing cancer if they found issues.

The other reason for the finger, is a prostate exam. My internist said since he was ordering a PSA for prostate, he didn't care if I passed on it.  Sounded good to me.  Then I found someone in another forum who had a low PSA, but failed the digital exam.  PSA testing is controversial, but you don't want to fail the digital exam.

As for TMI, I'd rather hear about Stephens wimin, than Ken's plegm.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, you know the drill and give Kid what ever he likes! Happy B-Day

My health? Whistling Another up and down day as far as breathing goes. Sat on the front pourch for 2 hours today and breathing was much better. Go in the house, not as good. Wife has made me keep all the windows shut for the last 20 years plus because A Bug Might Get In! I cannot use any kind of bug spray because she does not like the smell, so house is full of spiders!

So Tuesday the windows come open! Bang Head More than likely some bugs will get out and not in! House has a musty smell for being closed up all these years. I am not going to live this way the rest of my life! SoapBox

Wife Walking Front I be dang, she went outside today and walked further today by about 100 feet! Then she visted with Dwight next door for 15 minutes and then we came home.

BLI PRR M1a New tower gear is installed and seems to roll freely! Big Smile Hope to get her going yet tonight.

Came across this Video on U Tube.

Ok, I am now hooked on PRR Geat looking layout either way. But beside PRR I saw a Bessimer engine and some B&O as well! Big Smile It really looks like a small railroad and not a HO train layout.

Ed Great job hosting the dinner this month! Bow

Kid Happy B-Day again and how old are you?

Todd Sure wish you stopped more often. Sigh

 Jan Same with you.

Well Chicken Buritos for dinner tonight! Dinner

  Later, Ken

Evening all,

MY House AC went out yesterday afternoon. I found that the condensor fan had quit causing themal cut out of the compresssor. So I bought a new run capacitor hoping that was the fix, no dice. So I got a new motor. I was getting ready to start the install process when I found a broken wire going to the old motor. Splice and I  am back in business. I will install the new motor over the winter as I need to rewire the one that is on there and keep as a spare. The insulation was getting bad. I hopefully will only need this a few more days as cool fronts are coming. I have kept this unit going for the 20 years I have been here. It dates from prob 1972, they don't make them like this anymore. The AC guy that came and gave it a freon boost a few years ago told me not to replace it until it dies completely. I had to give it a boost this year with some freon.

That is about all from KY this evening.

Flo (or whoever's handy), please deliver a round of birthday cake to everyone in the Diner. You have a birthday guy here. (Me!)

I have spent a chunk of the day getting some more of the wiring done on the new layout. At the moment I have a sea of blue and yellow wire. (Switch machine wiring.) I hope to add to that sea a bunch of red this afternoon and evening. (Track control rails.)

I also got the rolling stock off the floor. (Got a couple of 3 shelf plastic shelving units. They were on sale for $3 each. I decided to turn them into three 2 shelf units as three shelves wouldn't fit under the layout. The only extra parts were four shelf support posts.

Top of the page! Halloween treats are on me!

Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends in Canada.

Thanks Ed, and thanks for the fall colour video too.

Dianne and I just got back from a colour cruise. It is a bit early in our area. Only about 1/3 of the trees have started to turn. Usually we take a trip up to Algonquin Park to see the view. The trees there are about 80% turned but we are not going to drive up into cottage country on a long weekend. That would be insane. We might go through the week but it is supposed to rain. We'll see.

For those of you who are anticipating your Thanksgiving turkey, we found a method for making the skin really crisp without overcooking the bird and without having to deep fry it. It is very simple. Dry the skin and rub a small amount of baking soda into the skin. You want just enough to turn the skin a bit white. Then rub the skin with some olive oil (the oil is optional but it prevents any unabsorbed baking soda from showing white after the bird is cooked). Then cook your bird!

We start ours at 450 degrees and then immediately turn the oven down to 350. (I almost forgot to turn the heat down on Saturday!Dunce) The skin will bubble up when it is cooking but don't worry, the bubbles will go down when you take the bird out of the oven. The skin is a real treat!!Dinner

Bon appetit

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Another thing to look forward to now that you're on this side of fifty: a digital exam. I should inform you that they're not as high-tech as you might think.

At the Mohawk Valley hobby shop in Schenectady, NY there are two cats, Delaware and Hudson. Here is Delaware, Hudson was hiding when I was there.

IMG_6477

Hudson is a great cat name! I'll have to remember that one for a future cat. (And what a handsome boy Delaware is!)

Other names we have in the queue for future cats include Rio (for Rio Grande), Espee, and Tweetsie. My wife didn't like Rocky (for the Rock Island) because "people will think we named him after the boxer." So I said, "OK then, how about we name him after the Great Northern's mountain goat mascot?" She said, "What name is that?" When I replied "Rocky," you should have seen the dirty look she gave me. Laugh

At the Mohawk Valley hobby shop in Schenectady, NY there are two cats, Delaware and Hudson. Here is Delaware, Hudson was hiding when I was there.

One of those things was my first-ever visit to the cardiologist. I don't have any major issues, just some of the typical nagging worries that come with crossing the half-century mark.

Another thing to look forward to now that you're on this side of fifty: a digital exam. I should inform you that they're not as high-tech as you might think.

Good morning, all. Been away a few days, got some stuff done.

One of those things was my first-ever visit to the cardiologist. I don't have any major issues, just some of the typical nagging worries that come with crossing the half-century mark. Among other things he told me was to lay off the sweet stuff. So, since here in the Diner it's all virtual, let's enjoy some of that famous New England treat, Boston Cream Pie. Yum!

The other thing I did I'm afraid I can't upload a photo of just yet. But there's a new addition to the Otte roundhouse: Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Ry. Cat, aka "Missabe" for short. She's a 7-month-old black-and-brown spotted tabby, quite energetic and friendly as the day is long. Once she's out of "medical isolation" for a spot of kitty-cold, we're hoping she'll be a great playmate for our next-youngest cat, 3-year-old Clinchfield. Yes, we name all our cats for railroads. Big Smile Missabe joins Clinchfield and (Santa) Fe, who's 13 and will probably want nothing to do with this brand-new bundle of energy. (Other railway cats we've owned: Pennsy, Miss Katy, and Frisco.)

So anyway, looks like things have been quiet while I was gone. That's good. Quiet is good. Smile

The way back I had three girls, yes THREE GIRLS all over me

Good grief, please give it a rest.

There is such a thing as too much information.
