Kitchen Remodel: I transferred the design for the cabinets to the walls using blue tap. I am finally getting towards something we both really like.
.
I think we can finalize the plan and order the cabinets pretty soon.
It warmed up to about 58 degrees today, so I was able to go outside and cut a few floor tiles.

Rick Nancy is the worst retail person I have ever meet! No Morals At All, all she wants is there money and she will say and do anything to get it!

Steven can you solider? I found a Switcher I never ran and forgot about. It is DC and I think I have a NCE decoder that could be installed I can send.
Any Tips On Installing BLI Traction Wheels? I am worried about getting them out of quarter.

I hate Rust
Ken I can answer there of your questions...
1 the post Mr. Otte had to clean up was EMDMikes "who models BN here?" Thread...
2 I can learn to solder from one of the club members...
3 I was running Rods MTH triplex at the club and one of the traction tires came off so I figured out how to reattach it... if you unbolt the side rods from the driver on one side first and then get two precision flat jewelers screwdrivers and gently get the tire on, then reattach the siderods and do the other side... hope that helps... good luck...
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Kevin are you hanging your own cabinets?
Unless they're built for a French cleats, I've always liked trimming a piece of plywood into 6" strips and using that in lieu of the sheetrock behind the upper cabinets. We'd take a 2x6 and run it between studs, and then face it with the plywood to be flush with the sheetrock. Paint the plywood and then seal over the joint with a vapor barrier prior to putting up the cabinets.

Good Evening, Folks!
Things are relatively calm in this neck of the Great Lakes area... A slight warm up to perhaps 40°F this weekend.
cudakenAny Tips On Installing BLI Traction Wheels? I am worried about getting them out of quarter.
This sheet covers the Niagara, Ken. Maybe it will help? I'll check to see if I have the instructions for the Hudson, later.
You shouldn't have to worry about quartering since you are not going to twist the drivers on their axles. It should drop right in. Be sure the bearings don't get dislodged.
BATMANEd, I have had a very easy slide through life. I have had setbacks just like most, however, they didn't upset me much. My philosophy on that is, everybody has events in their lives that they would rather not have had. Wasting time and energy dwelling on them is as productive as complaining about the weather.
Excellent philosophy, Brent! Some folks find themselves dwelling on so many negative events that they drag themselves into some serious issues.
I used to skip to work singing "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah"
Cheers, Everybody!

Answers to questions about kitchen project:
No, I am not working with a designer/contractor. That was the plan. When I had a week off from work in December when I started this, I met with three contractor/design teams. They all said exactly the same thing. They had no interest in my $20,000.00 project when they could spend the same time on a $50,000.00 project somewhere else.
I did all the demo work myself the next week. I hired my own plumber, electrician, and drywall people to do the work I could not do myself. I did the painting and I am laying the tile. The cabinets will be installed by the seller.
While the drywall was down, all the custom wiring for the home theater system was installed. The living room is on the other side of the kitchen wall.
I ended up buying the cabinets and countertops through Home Depot. I am not going to turn this into a Home Depot Disappointment thread, so I will not discuss the details here. Things are working out with Home Depot now, but they need to have the kitchen measured again before they will finalize the plan. The original plan they came up with had a large cabinet where I did not want one, so that had to be changed, and caused delays. I do not understand why the kitchen needs to be measured again. It has not changed size in 30 years!
Wish me luck. It looks like it will be about 6-8 weeks before anything is completed.

The reason the box store installer will measure a second time is to verify the measurements from the first time they measured, or to verify homeowner supplied measurements. Because with the box store, if they install and the cabinet won't fit, they eat it,...usually. Also, to be somewhat reassuring, I've known a few very good designers who work at box stores. Some of those are even NKBA certified. I hope you got a decent one. I'm glad you are having the box store install the cabinets because there's a lot that can go wrong and if they do it, they'll make it right. HD installers are sub-contracted and go through a rather stringent process to be selected. If the homeowner installs and something goes wrong,....umm, sorry!
FYI: Cabinets are made per order. Assembled cabinets would take up way too much warehouse space to inventory. That's why it takes 6-10 weeks to get them. It's similar with countertop fabricators. They store the flat slabs (or the slab you purchase) and cut to order.
i hope all goes well. Let us know how it all turns out (with pictures, of course).

Kevin,
FWIW I have used Home Depot to do both my kitchen and my main bathroom over completely and I was really happy with the work. Very professional, highly skilled installers who did what was needed instead of saying "that's not in the contract...." There were some problems with the bathroom installation but they got addressed promptly.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Good morning from 4568km 18.44m South of the North Pole. It is 10c with a high overcast.
Garry, that is great work on the layout. For some reason, around 1900 is my favourite era. Dirt and grime just excite me for some reason. I am watching with interest.
My friend that is a contractor phoned me up a few years ago and asked if I could come and install the cabinets in the kitchen of his rental house. He had really hurt himself and the tenants were moving in the next day. I went over that night and they were Ikea cabinets. It was a large kitchen with a lot of cabinets to install. I got them all unboxed and installed by about 4 in the morning, including the countertops. The house was move in ready when I finished. Ikea makes some really nice stuff.
It is my 20th anniversary tomorrow, the wife is still getting over the flu and so we won't go out. However, a bunch of friends phoned and are bringing a big spread over to help us celebrate. In reality, they just want to see the pups. They are 19 days old already.
My wife's best friend is losing her hair from chemo, so the jokes will be flying tomorrow. One thing I'll say about most of our friends, we have the ability to make light of even the most serious issues, it is just the way we deal with it. She was over the other day and I moved the garbage can next to her as it was starting to fall out by the handful.
Three of my wife's doggie friends in the U.S. have died from the flu this year. They have all stayed at our house at one time or another, so it is a bit of a shocker. Apparently, none of them had the flu shot.
I have actually been getting a lot of time in the trainroom lately and feel great for doing so. Progress is a great motivator.
The kid is apartment hunting in Ottawa for next year. He figures he won't return after this summer as he will start doing work in international affairs as part of his education. He really wants to get out and work all over the world. When he was young I use to tell him that the world is a wondrous place. I should have kept my mouth shut as now I won't see him very often.
Well, time to go glue something. I have to take my daughter to the barn to ride the old plug tonight as the wife isn't up to it. Actually, it is a beautiful show horse that stands over 17 hands. One needs to use the stairs to get on her.
All the best to all. First round on me tonight and give Ken a double.

Health Front Went to the VA today for my Diabetic health care to have my feet checked. While I no longer have any feeling in them they where in good shape. Got a Flue shoot (mainly because of Nancy) and had some blood drawen for my A1C test. Would love another 5.5 A1C but if I where to guess it will be around 6.5 because of the Holidays. I love stuffing!
Ed Could you repost the phots on another site? When I tryed to open it all I got was pop up ads.
Steven I only have one unbulit kit. So I stopped by K-10 Model Trains and bought a few things for you, nothing fancy. Found 2 Cotton Belt 50' Covred Hoppers that are Atharn Blue Box kits pluse a Walthers four lane Auto Bridge. If you do not need the bridge let me know and I will pick up another kit.
BBQ is done and so am I.

Ken, thanks! I really don't foresee a need for a four lane highway bridge, but thanks anyway!!

Yeah, the tracking on my end said by 8 PM tonight, well after the P.O. closes.
Things are packed pretty tightly in that box! Hope everything gets there OK
I'll check in later when the Prime Ribs of Beef au-jus is ready
Cheers! Ed
By the way, I'm not sure who suggested I look for a Kemtron Cab Forward casting but actually found one for under 10 bucks!
Hey Gents
Got called into work tonight, coworker had emergency. We desparately need the money, so i working. But it sucks rail spikes for a friay nite. Only 7 check ins. First one didnt come until 3 hours into my shift. Have 4 to go in 5 hours left until midnite when I get out.
SOme of you ahve posted how well your life has gone for you. Thats great. Life for me has been sour grapes and FULL of adversary. only my early 20s were prosperous. Then medical issues set in. Ive had to start completely over 7 times in my life and moved to do so in many cases. Also a house fire took everythign I owned, a home invasion took what I had replaced after the fire, and I was once homeless living under a bridge nest to teh RR tracks. It was comforting to know the 12:05, the 2:30 aND THE 5:00 am ttrains were on time. It was winter too. NO, FAMILY WOULD NOT help out. I had a friend who let me sleep on his couch on bitter cold night and shower on ocassion and throw my laundry in with his. Finally beng homeless, I was able after 5 applications to get welfare, adn then to apply for my SSDI. My life has been a mess.
Even today, mY oh hours got cut and I got cut to 8 hours here adn that means 32 hours of pay are missing, and the company at job#1 for MOh did NOT come through wiht year end bonus this year, we were sick for two weeks, no paychecks adn are now definitely behind on almost all our bills. I have no idea how to pay the gasoline bill or the energy bill. Plus my van broke down $500 to fix. Needed money taken away form bills. I have absoloutely no idea where the funds will come form!!!! NONE! I sold off the old washer and dryer, am listing the portable dishwasher for sale just to get $$ to pay bills.
Recently a member here sent me somehtin, I said when I had funds I insisted on reimbursing him, but he declared NO WAY was I to do so! Thanks for that, you know who you are.
I have not been sleeping, I think due to the bill problem, aslo winter depression is firmly in place, and i go through cycles of not sleeping, but not usually in winter. Usually in winter I hibernate more, but not sleeping now is taking its toll, I have to get through tonight, tomorrow day shift and sunday 4-midnite before I can sleep a day away if I can! I have no choice. he manager originally wnated me to work tonight instead of tomorrow, but I wrnagled the extra day out of him, though I will come in tomorrow a little later than usual.
Garry: Nice work on the layout! Im envious! of both space and layout!
WEll, Id best get off here, the company has issued a "no personal use clause", so technically Im breaking it.
later
hope all is well for all.

galaxySOme of you ahve posted how well your life has gone for you.
I was robbed at gunpoint at age 20 (every day since then has been a gift) —
Lost my job at 24; First wife died when she was 27 and left me to raise two children and two foster kids.
Burned the house down (almost) back in 2012.
Still... life has been good (on average) At 61 I don't have any complaints.
Could have been a lot worse Not trying to have a competition just sayin' you have to try to keep going in the face of adversity.
You just never know what burdens some folks have had to deal with and I certainly admire you for carrying on, Galaxy.
All we can do is hope for the better and accept what we have.
See if this is better, Ken.

Brent ..... HAPPY ANNIVERSARY .....
Galaxy ... Thanks for commenting about my scene.
Afternoon folks,
not much going on here. lsitening to the ice and snow slide off the roof. went to the thrift store today and scored a nice vintage record player (actually a turntable).
I have yet to find any trains at a thrift store now that i think of it. I did get a Bachman spectrum engine off of the goodwill auction site once but that was about it.
someone brought more radios to be fixed....sigh....
Evening diners, looks like everybody's busy today...
Well maybe some oldies on the jukebox will draw in some folks...
I guess it will be quite a while before I see a restaurant again. The OH went to be feeling bloated. Not the usual symptoms she has been having from the chemo. I honestly don't know if I would be willing to put up with months of nausea and diarhea. Her meds only help some.
Not complaining, I see other diner members have their share of problems.

Evening All! Flo (or whoever's handy), could I get some breaded mushrooms and a side a blue cheese dressing? Thank you so much. Could you also give all those with problems whatever they want want?
Hobby Front: Got the three turnouts that I had ordered. They form the beginnings of the new rail yard. I priced out the lumber and hardware for building the structure for that yard. However, I would have to rearrange the layout room a little to get the pieces installed whenever it does get built. (The storage table will be in the way.)
Picture Front: Monday I hopefully will get the chance to finally get the GMD GP9 photgraphed. The weather looks to be good enough. I also plan to go back later in the afternoon to see the transfer table working as well when it is parked inside to keep it warm. (I saw it work once many years ago. I plan to take a video of it and will try to send a copy to the uncle who took me to see it that particular day. I think he should get a kick out of it that it is working again.)
Evenin' folks!
Janie, I could sure use a cup of decaf to warm me up while I bare my soul here for a while.........
One week ago I recieved the message that a very dear old friend of mine passed on after having a slow decline from Dementia. She technically died at home a week before that but was recusitated at the emergency room at our hospital and spent 3 days in ICU. They then decided that she was not going to recover (no Expletive deleted!) so they put her Hospice care and removed all the life support.
Over the years since I moved here to Geneva, NY and particularly after my wife died and I became a member of the MLK committee (Was suggested after I became a Deacon at the Presbyterian Church) Rosa and I became friends. She was the Vice President of the MLK committee at that time. When the gent who was the President of the committe was killed in a horrible vehicle accident, she became the president and I was elected Vice-president. I later became the Treasurer which is a position I still hold on the committee. Anyway Rosa came over to my house many times to work on various items needing to be updated. Usually we would figure that it would take a half hour or so.... And... after three hours, we would be at least half way done with the project, but...... Rosa and I would have solved all the problems of the world. Unfortunately nobody would listen to us and that is why there are so many problems out there!
Anyway, today was Rosa's "Home Going Celebration" (most churches would call it a funeral or memorial service). It was held at my church because we are one of the largest (capacity) in the Geneva area. Good thing, as the church was packed. There were 16 Ministers, Pastors, and Bishops speaking at the service which went on for 3 hours. (Those folks really know how to send someone off!!!). I provided extra mikes (for the choir) and made sure the sound was working. A local City Councilman who is also a professional musician (and can still hear) worked the sound board. One of the mikes I brought in for it is a Shurer KSM27 Large Diaphram Condenser mike I saved from back when I was in the recording business. That has a sweet sound, and the councilman loved it! I was in church for a total of 5+ hours today......
Since I know most all of her family (one daughter used teach elementary school here back when I was teaching, and another daughter works with kids who want to be college bound but don't have the finances nor background in their families to make it easily (She has done that both in the High School and at the local college...), and I have been the guy taking 100's of photos of MLK events over the years, I went through my computer files and found 12 really good portrait photos of Rosa, printed them, and dropped them off to one of her daughters. Turns out they used four of my photos at calling hours, and at the service today. Made me feel good!
Just a little about what this Southern poor country girl did with her life (from the obituary). "....she helped establish a scholarship fund which has helped over 200 students realise thier goal of attending college. She received the Loftus C. Carson Human Rights Award from the NYS Division of Human Rights; the Agnes Slosson Lewis award from the League of Women Voters; and the Springsted Award from the Geneva Rotary Club. In May 2012, an honorary docorate of human letters was conferred on her by Hobart and William Smith Colleges in recognition of her service to the community." ( I omited several other awards...)
I am very touched that she and her family consider me a good friend! The local cable channel showed up and did a nice video piece on the "Home Going Celebration"! You can see it here if you desire: http://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/rochester/news/2018/01/20/geneva-civil-right-s-activist-rosa-blue-passes-at-86
Sorry to be so long winded, but, it has been a very long week and I am about ready to feed the cats, turn off the lights and head to bed. Will try to get up in time to make it to church tomorrow morning. BTW, one fun thing about having a former teacher and professional singer as our pastor is, both of us know how to get with the rejoicing music at things like this........
Later! And, as Robert Frost once said, "I'm not confused, just well mixed."

The wife and I have been on a bit of a rough road lately. Her mom has been ill her blood pressure is sky-high and she's had a hard time breathing. She was admitted to the hospital Thursday and my wife had to leave town to be with her. I could not get away from work. She drove up with her sister.
I can only wish and pray the best for her mom first priority. I have to say after being with someone for 25 years and all of the sudden she's just gone I feel like half of me is missing every day and every night. I went to a small railroad show in Woodbury today to get my mind off of things. I hope her mom Springs back soon and my wife can come back home I really miss her.
