Ken, thanks! I really don't foresee a need for a four lane highway bridge, but thanks anyway!!

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, The gang and I will have a Beer and give SteveO (the enforer) Steven and Rick what they like.

Health Front Went to the VA today for my Diabetic health care to have my feet checked. While I no longer have any feeling in them they where in good shape. Got a Flue shoot (mainly because of Nancy)  and had some blood drawen for my A1C test. Would love another 5.5 A1C but if I where to guess it will be around 6.5 because of the Holidays. I love stuffing! Dinner

Ed Could you repost the phots on another site? When I tryed to open it all I got was pop up ads.

Steven I only have one unbulit kit. So I stopped by K-10 Model Trains and bought a few things for you, nothing fancy. Found 2 Cotton Belt 50' Covred Hoppers that are Atharn Blue Box kits pluse a Walthers four lane Auto Bridge. If you do not need the bridge let me know and I will pick up another kit.

BBQ is done and so am I.

Good morning from 4568km 18.44m South of the North Pole. It is 10c with a high overcast.

Garry, that is great work on the layout. For some reason, around 1900  is my favourite era. Dirt and grime just excite me for some reason.Laugh I am watching with interest.

My friend that is a contractor phoned me up a few years ago and asked if I could come and install the cabinets in the kitchen of his rental house. He had really hurt himself and the tenants were moving in the next day. I went over that night and they were Ikea cabinets. It was a large kitchen with a lot of cabinets to install. I got them all unboxed and installed by about 4 in the morning, including the countertops. The house was move in ready when I finished. Ikea makes some really nice stuff.

It is my 20th anniversary tomorrow, the wife is still getting over the flu and so we won't go out. However, a bunch of friends phoned and are bringing a big spread over to help us celebrate. In reality, they just want to see the pups.Laugh They are 19 days old already.

My wife's best friend is losing her hair from chemo, so the jokes will be flying tomorrow. One thing I'll say about most of our friends, we have the ability to make light of even the most serious issues, it is just the way we deal with it. She was over the other day and I moved the garbage can next to her as it was starting to fall out by the handful.

Three of my wife's doggie friends in the U.S. have died from the flu this year. They have all stayed at our house at one time or another, so it is a bit of a shocker. Apparently, none of them had the flu shot.

I have actually been getting a lot of time in the trainroom lately and feel great for doing so. Progress is a great motivator.

The kid is apartment hunting in Ottawa for next year. He figures he won't return after this summer as he will start doing work in international affairs as part of his education. He really wants to get out and work all over the world. When he was young I use to tell him that the world is a wondrous place. I should have kept my mouth shut as now I won't see him very often.SighLaugh

Well, time to go glue something. I have to take my daughter to the barn to ride the old plug tonight as the wife isn't up to it. Actually, it is a beautiful show horse that stands over 17 hands. One needs to use the stairs to get on her.

All the best to all. First round on me tonight and give Ken a double.

Brent

Kevin,

FWIW I have used Home Depot to do both my kitchen and my main bathroom over completely and I was really happy with the work. Very professional, highly skilled installers who did what was needed instead of saying "that's not in the contract...." There were some problems with the bathroom installation but they got addressed promptly.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Sigh... had to clean up another thread... just so the message has the opportunity to spread far and wide, here's what I posted in that thread after doing so...

SteveO Was the post in the dinner?

No, but some of the participants post here, and it's a message that all should see.

Answers to questions about kitchen project:

.

No, I am not working with a designer/contractor. That was the plan. When I had a week off from work in December when I started this, I met with three contractor/design teams. They all said exactly the same thing. They had no interest in my $20,000.00 project when they could spend the same time on a $50,000.00 project somewhere else.

.

I did all the demo work myself the next week. I hired my own plumber, electrician, and drywall people to do the work I could not do myself. I did the painting and I am laying the tile. The cabinets will be installed by the seller.

.

While the drywall was down, all the custom wiring for the home theater system was installed. The living room is on the other side of the kitchen wall.

.

I ended up buying the cabinets and countertops through Home Depot. I am not going to turn this into a Home Depot Disappointment thread, so I will not discuss the details here. Things are working out with Home Depot now, but they need to have the kitchen measured again before they will finalize the plan. The original plan they came up with had a large cabinet where I did not want one, so that had to be changed, and caused delays. I do not understand why the kitchen needs to be measured again. It has not changed size in 30 years!

.

Wish me luck. It looks like it will be about 6-8 weeks before anything is completed.

Yeah, design-build firms gravitate to higher dollar projects;however please don't feel slighted.  The people you talked to have enough volume business going right now that they can afford to pick and choose, so to speak.

The reason the box store installer will measure a second time is to verify the measurements from the first time they measured, or to verify homeowner supplied measurements.  Because with the box store, if they install and the cabinet won't fit, they eat it,...usually.  Also, to be somewhat reassuring, I've known a few very good designers who work at box stores.  Some of those are even NKBA certified.  I hope you got a decent one.  I'm glad you are having the box store install the cabinets because there's a lot that can go wrong and if they do it, they'll make it right.  HD installers are sub-contracted and go through a rather stringent process to be selected.  If the homeowner installs and something goes wrong,....umm, sorry!

FYI:  Cabinets are made per order.  Assembled cabinets would take up way too much warehouse space to inventory.  That's why it takes 6-10 weeks to get them.  It's similar with countertop fabricators.  They store the flat slabs (or the slab you purchase) and cut to order.

i hope all goes well.  Let us know how it all turns out (with pictures, of course).

Less is more,...more or less!

Good luck!

And Ken, there was a thread in here about quartering loco drivers.  Maybe check it out.

Good Evening, Folks!

Things are relatively calm in this neck of the Great Lakes area... A slight warm up to perhaps 40°F this weekend.

Any Tips On Installing BLI Traction Wheels? I am worried about getting them out of quarter.

This sheet covers the Niagara, Ken. Maybe it will help? I'll check to see if I have the instructions for the Hudson, later.

You shouldn't have to worry about quartering since you are not going to twist the drivers on their axles. It should drop right in. Be sure the bearings don't get dislodged.

Ed, I have had a very easy slide through life. I have had setbacks just like most, however, they didn't upset me much. My philosophy on that is, everybody has events in their lives that they would rather not have had. Wasting time and energy dwelling on them is as productive as complaining about the weather.

Excellent philosophy, Brent! Some folks find themselves dwelling on so many negative events that they drag themselves into some serious issues.

I used to skip to work singing "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah"

 Cheers, Everybody!

Kitchen Remodel: I transferred the design for the cabinets to the walls using blue tap. I am finally getting towards something we both really like.

.

.

I think we can finalize the plan and order the cabinets pretty soon.

.

It warmed up to about 58 degrees today, so I was able to go outside and cut a few floor tiles.

Kevin are you hanging your own cabinets?

Unless they're built for a French cleats, I've always liked trimming a piece of plywood into 6" strips and using that in lieu of the sheetrock behind the upper cabinets. We'd take a 2x6 and run it between studs, and then face it with the plywood to be flush with the sheetrock. Paint the plywood and then seal over the joint with a vapor barrier prior to putting up the cabinets.

Ken I can answer there of your questions...

1 the post Mr. Otte had to clean up was EMDMikes "who models BN here?" Thread...

2 I can learn to solder from one of the club members...

3 I was running Rods MTH triplex at the club and one of the traction tires came off so I figured out how to reattach it... if you unbolt the side rods from the driver on one side first and then get two precision flat jewelers screwdrivers and gently get the tire on, then reattach the siderods and do the other side... hope that helps... good luck...

We had a big snowstorm, over a foot, just about 2 weeks ago.  It was all gone within a week.  Then, we had a smaller storm yesterday, only 3 inches or so, and it looks like that will be gone in a week, too.

Fine with me.  Our DPW knows how to plow the streets and keep them open.  Since I'm retired, I wait until the snow stops and I'm plowed out rather than venturing out in the storm.  Then I'm fine.

Today it was about -15 C here in Southern Ontario with enough wind chill to make some people really unhappy. I did the garbage in my T shirt. Took my time too.Stick out tongueSmile, Wink & GrinLaughLaugh

It's the weather! The only two things you can do about it are to accept it calmly or move somewhere else. OH, sorry - there is a third thing - whine about it! Seems to be a popular choice!

Don't get me wrong, spring can't get here soon enough for me. Until then I choose to grin and bear it ('bare it' might apply too when I'm outside in my shirt sleeves)!

 Eveing Diners

Flo get the gang a Beer and give Rick, Stenen a RBF and leave a Stein outside for Ulrich.

Work Reading Front. Only person that came in wanted something to sleep on for under $50.00. Her reason is she has Bed Bugs and she will have to throw it a way anyway?

Train Front. Got the new turnout wired but it has a problem. Sapswitch cannot get the rails blades fully in to the thrown postion. I have a few ideas.

Tracton Wheels Installion. Yes the NYC Hudson came with Traction Wheels! Big Smile I thought it had a nut driver with the engine when I bought it. If it did, I removed it and no idea where I put it if it did have the needed driver. Whistling Guess I am going to K-10 Model Trains Thursday or Friday. Smile

Good (late) evening all.

Zoe - A big mug of hot cocoa, spiked with coffee please. (Half cocoa, half coffee.) This cold weather has me not breathing to well.

Weather - Cold.... Cold...... Cold......

Health - Yup... Asthma issues today. I think it's just from the bitter temps, as that will affect it.

Ken - Must be going around... My boss has the flu as well. (Although, she is a much better retail person than Nancy!)

W*^k - Slow today. Did decent yestrerday, but today "sucked rail spikes" to borrow from Ken. Yesterday I had one sale, but it was a decent one. Today? Zip, nada, nuthin'.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

The last 3 snow events I've had in SE. WI., since it's been cold, I've used the leaf blower.  Light and powder.  About 5" total, the last couple days.  The only shoveling is at the end of the drive, from the street stuff.

BUT, I'am about 30 mi. inland from the big lake.

2" of powdery snow kept schools closed today even thought the snow was over by 10 am.

Stumbled on this youtube drone footage of National Railway Equipment.   Looks like they have enough spare parts for the next 100 years.
