Ken,

Brought the still on line last month----200 proof.  So far have sent one neighbor home on his hands and knees.

Burning wood, and dealing with the ash in the house precipatated trying the ATF, I can re-create Pompeii by using the vacuum on the exhaust mode, and hit one end of the layout. Most of it will disappear in a grey cloud. It does facilitate in realistic weathering however.

Ken, your question to Rick about real gas, a Road Ranger truck stop, here in East Troy, WI. sells regular gas, no ethanol.  It's about $0.20 more.  There is a web site that list ethanol free stations across the country, I'd have to search for it to find it again, but it's out there.

It's the best for small engines.  I fix, rebuild, and sell garden tractors as a summer hobby, and that's all I use.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed, Tom, Jan and I will have a Beer please and give Rick a Root Beer Float.

Work was real strange today. Got my first customer at 6:05 PM and I had two sales from the guys. Last customer came in at 7:30 PM and I got out half a hour late but they all so bought.

Jan No reason to thank me on the ATF tip! I was just trying to sucker someone to try it besides me! Smile, Wink & Grin I am glad it is working for you as well. I am going to give it another week before I do the whole layout. You lost me on the Blue Flame thing I will add.Whistling

Rick Where besides a Air Port or Drag strip do you buy Real Gas?

YGW Guess laction is everything when it comes to housing. In my neck of the woods a $500,000 home would be around 5000 sq feet.

Galaxy I hope you enjoy working again. What is your weight down to? I would guess working a Front Desk means standing a lot, hope they have stools you can sit on.

Health Feet Front. Sigh Found a new Black Callus on my right foot great toe this morning. Sigh I know what that means, I have a bleeding wound under the skin again. Here I have only cut the grass one time and I have a whole summer a head of me. Not counting all the other things I need to do like finshing the fences, cleaning the gutters, dead wooding tress and the list goes on and on.

 Later Ken

Garry - EEEEEWWW I would not be picking up that engine after a rim shot Dead I am with you I think the war bonnet paint scheme is really great.

YGW ... Hopefully the trains don't pile up. They might be wiped out.

Gidday Chloe, a large glass of cold pineapple juice with a few cubes of ice, please.

YGW. If you don’t mind a rambling Bears History of The World and Things, read on.Zzz

“How are you connected to Hawaii?”

Well, it is also in the Pacific Ocean.Smile, Wink & Grin

What we tend to forget, it that prior to the US Transcontinental Railroad completion in 1869, and the earlier Panama Railway, completed in 1855, the quickest route to California was around Cape Horn. Considering that the Californian Gold Rush which ran from 1848 to 1855, it is not hard to see that the sea route was extensively used.

The big problem in the sea route was Cape Horn, a notorious sailors’ graveyard, complete with strong winds, huge waves, competing currents, and icebergs; the East to West voyage made even more difficult as it was going against the prevailing wind. (This was in the days of sail, though as one of those ironical foot notes of history, with the advent of steamers, their coaling stations in South America were generally replenished by sailing ships!) There are documented cases where sailing ships have turned around and sailed east in the Roaring 40s, passing below the Cape of Good Hope, and below or between Australia and New Zealand to reach California.

What also has to be taken into consideration is distance. New York to San Francisco round Cape Horn is a voyage of 13328 nautical miles (15337 miles) whereas between Auckland and San Francisco is a mere 5680 nautical miles (6536 miles).

So, largely forgotten in the annuals of history is that from New Zealand’s early days, starting circa 1790s, there was a small but reasonably vigorous trade between the US West Coast and New Zealand, and Hawaii would have been as good as place as any to top up the water supplies if required.

Hawaii remained as a port of call not only with steam ships but was a refuelling stop for airliners flying not only from NZ but Australia, as well. In fact, it is only recently with the new long haul airliners that NZ to San Francisco, Los Angeles, or even Vancouver is now nonstop, though Hawaii remains a popular tourist destination.

As far as pineapple on food goes, is that long before the American Fast Food giants unfortunately found their way here, starting in the 1970s, a local “Hawaiian Burger” basically consisted of a minced beef pattie, a ham steak, pineapple, lettuce and mayonnaise; various burger bars had their own variations.

Galaxy, I wish you well with your new job and hope, apart from the financial aspect, you find it mentally satisfying, just don’t go busting your foo-foo valve.

der5997, most definitely the roast beef will be pink in the middle!!

Down in this part of the South Pacific the naming of a cyclone depends on whether it formed in either the designated Fiji or Australia regions, and is taken from the next alphabetic letter. So, Debbie was the fourth Australian region cyclone for the year, while Cook was the third from the Fiji region.

Lake Rotorua lies in the crater of a volcano that apparently erupted 230,000 years ago, last Tuesday. The area is still geothermically active, Mount Tarawera, some 15 miles south east of Rotorua, last erupted in 1886, with the loss of an estimated 120 folks. Operating a model railroad in an atmosphere that contains hydrogen sulphide (with its associated rotten egg smell) is why I’m a big fan of the “John Allen” track cleaning cars.

A view of Lake Rotorua, including Mokoia Island taken from home.

Herrinchoker, have sent a PM.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

JaBear:
I can’t comment for other ffolkes in the Commonwealth, der5997,you’re more than welcome to put in your two bobs worth, but the big change to cooking was with the “discovery” of Chinese cuisine in the late 70s. IMO they taught us how to cook vegetables, not only properly but that they also tasted yum!
So on that basis, I’d be prepared to put up “traditional” British Roast Beef, with roast spuds, parsnip, pumpkin, kumera, Yorkshire Puddings, steamed green peas, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, with gravy made from the dripping, and Hot English mustard, against any other dish!!
Right, on the boiled-to-grey-mush cabbage, glad to say that was not a feature of home cooking for us. (School “cooking” however is a in class of its own!)  Chucking the cabbage water –again, mum didn’t. Saved it for other cooking later. Just as my MIL did (but she liked over-cooked veggies – fortunately her daughter doesn’t!) I think you may be correct about the advent of Chinese take out (away?) and their light touch on the veggies. I hadn’t considered that factor. Cool.  Now this roast beef dinner you’ve proposed. The beef will be pink on the inside, yes? Looking forward to trying Kumera. Oh wait, the trusty Ipomoea batatas – sweet potato! Isn’t Google useful? I can’t recall having had that before emigrating to Canada. (50 years this August, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?) Love it now, pretty much a staple in DERland. Gravy made from the dripping of course, but save some dripping for Dripping “butties” at bed-time. Pause while I wipe drool from the keyboard….
Tropical Cyclone Cook … However, it was a week earlier that the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Debbie…
We’ve just had Tropical Storm Arlene pop up in the North Atlantic – easily a month ahead of the official season. These named storms start with “A” and go up the alphabet. Here you are having Cook after Debbie. Do Cyclone names start at or near Z and work towards A? If so, you’ve had a busy season to be at C and still some time until stumps are drawn. Incidentally, we’re very familiar here in Nova Scotia with systems joining forces. The northerly ones come across from Ontario and the southerly ones up the coast from Maine and meet somewhere around the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Depending on the nature of these beasts and the time of year we get plenty of rain or snow – and always windy withall.
Edgecumbe – it seems there's quite a few lakes in behind there – and the Rangitaiki has Stop Banks ( Levies or Dykes for any NA Diners still paying attention) all the way to the sea at Thornton. I can see how that low agricultural land around there could flood quite easily. Our next Province west, New Brunswick has the St. John River which is a fair size and gets ice jams when the river breaks up in the Spring, where it narrows. They can cause a great deal of grief, but the peak has passed this year and sighs of relief can be heard from over yonder! BTW, just dragging the cursor over the Google Maps image to Lake Rotorua – that looks like a meteor crater. Any thoughts?

Ulrich: That is a real pleasure, Heidi is a delight! Thanks for taking the trouble with the video.

galaxy:Congratulations on the Front Desk job! You’re right I think  in getting some mileage on the PT and then trying for the extra hours. See how the work load affects your well being – and branch out or not in the light of that. It is certain that the $s will be a relief. Thumbs Up

Have to walk quietly when I go upstairs after posting this. Mrs. DER is trying to catch up on sleep she missed from a bad night last night. Christmas, sadly, did not come this week – no package at the Post Office. All I know is that it was in Canada a week ago – tracking from the US stops at the border….
Anyway, Goodnight all, and Prayers for all in need. Angel

I recall reading that you had plans on visiting Kenia. Kenia is currently experiencing an increase in terrorist activities and also sees tribal unrest. The German Foreign Ministry has issued a number of warnings concerning travels to Kenia.

Sir Madog

The railroad around the rim has turned into quite a conversation piece! Some Brit built is (who else would do such a thing?) and appropriately named it "Flushing Meadows". There is more to it - the water tank in that wooden casing contains a underground mining operation and loading facilities on top of the tank. Nicely done, but I hate to have to lug a porcelaine toilet bowl weighing half a ton from train show to train show without a forklift truck!

I guess I got it right when I called it "The Flushing Meadows Line"...I was also thinking it could be called the "Sitz & Spinz RR"!!

I will go later to find out about the j-o-b. It will be my first earnest paycheck in some odd years. The only problem I see is he wanted to check my references...guess who weren't available yesterday? all three! One I know the manager can get ahold of today and the other two are MIA. But I know a personal way to get ahold of them, and can try that when the manager is available. I will dress up agian in person to esee the manager. Hoep he doesn't rate me on my typing! Darn fingers don't work right since I died. Guess certain language function brain cells died then too.

well, then If the rain stays stopped, I ahve 8 bags of rocks for the greenhouse to remove from my van to start that project tomorrwo when train mut frined comes over.

Busy bee I am, now for my aching back....

Good Morning,

I guess it is Good Afternoon for many of you but I still have 10 minutes of morning left so I better use it wisely.

A beautiful day here with sun and a temp of about 60F. We plan on taking Robbie for a walk this afternoon but that is the extent of the agenda.

Last night we went to a Gilbert and Sullivan production, our first. It was quite enjoyable but I don't think it will make a G&S fan of me.

On Wednesday we had our first Birding and Breakfast outing. We saw 39 different species which is a good result for an hour and a half.

I'm still contemplating buying a new pair of binocs but will wait to see if a friend will buy the pair I have now. If so I will have accumulate the cost of the new pair.

Nothing new on the RR front. I have opened the box on a Red Caboose reefer  kit but other than read the directions, no other progress to date.

We are still looking at a return to Africa next year but not sure if it will happen yet. I can't believe how much costs have gone up since last year. Sure glad we went then as we couldn't afford that trip now.

Well I had better get moving here,

Lunch time !

Hello all. Been a busy morning at w**k. Production meeting, inspections, scheduling, problem solving etc...

Hobby front - Yesterday I brought home a pick up load of #57 stone for the driveway to the hobby barn and guess what !? It started pouring down Lightning while I unloaded the stone. I looked like a drowned rat when I finally finished unloading the truck !

Ulrich - You keep amazing me. Round tuit ! I havent seen one of those in years : ) . How many views do you average on your You tube videos ? I know you have one more than you did a little bit ago ! You do a really nice job on them !

Howmus - B&D used to be the only electric tradesman tool worth buying. They used to make this wonderful 3/8 drill with a 1/2 chuck. The housing was like any 3/8 drill but the motor and the chuck could handle drilling or boring up to anything that you could fit in that 1/2" chuck. It was so powerful that one had to be careful not to hold it to tight. If the bit hung up it could break your wrist ! I still have the drill and it still runs !

Garry - EEEEEWWW I would not be picking up that engine after a rim shot Dead I am with you I think the war bonnet paint scheme is really great.

ATSF - Nice engine photos. Glad you could get back in ! Is that two engines back to back ?

Herrinchoker - I dont know if you can or want to share those photos but it would really be neat to see them.

Ricky - Some of the Kitchen aid appliances are well bit such as the dual feed range ( gas and electric ), Hoods. We are having a LOT of issues with the side by side frig. The bottom freezer drawer does not shut evenly and then it build up with frost with no way to capture the frost when one thaws it out. And as stated before the service is miserable. Here the link to the subdivision that I am in charge of if you want to look at it http://www.liveatelevenoaks.com/

Ken - You have  avalid point the replacement cost is always way more than the cost to buy. There is demo cost, protection of existing structure, storage etc...

Steve - I would not want to be near those hoppers when they rolled into town ! That would be like followng a farmers "honey wagon" down the road Ick!

Alvie - Sound like you have a busy day off ! Packed with lots of fun stuff to do !

Angel - Glad you are feeling a bit better. Did eating make you feel any better ?

Good Afternoon!

Well, it´s nearly supper time over here, so I´ll just go for a Drinks, please!

Got my aching back scanned, but won´t find out until early next week, if there is a remedy for it. I guess I will be in for some physio-therapeutical things, but no surgery.

I was in and out of the place within 30 minutes and already back home by 9am, so it was more or less a regular day. The weather has been quite unkind to us today, lots of Umbrella and Storm, which is a Crying shame!

Been playing with "Heidi" just a little today. She had a bit of a hitch crossing the unpowered frog of my one and only switch, so I thought I´d have to "juice up the dead frog", but I don´t have to! All I need is to install a spring pressing the switch blades gently to the stock rails and that´ll do the trick. For the time being, I have fastened the throw bar with a little nail until I get a

installing a DPDT switch as a lever.

Have a great day!

Sugar was 174 this morning... Sigh  Blasted Easter Candy everyone insists on giving me!  Hate to see what my A1c is going to be a couple weeks from now.  I've also spent way to much time sitting here at the computer getting all the overdue items finished thyat I had to do.

Major bunch of Thunderboomers went overhead last night.  Sky was lit up almost cnstantley for an hour or so.  It wash a major gullywasher too dropping about 1.1" of rain.  About the time it settled down, I ventured out to put out the trash and recycling for pickup today.  Good thing I did as the truck came by about the time I got up this morning.  Water was pouring down the entire width of Bennett St. down to the catch basin right on the corner.  Haven't been down cellar yet, but I can almost guarrantee I have a wet beasement....

Galaxy, good luck on the job!  Hope that works out for you.

ATSF Guy .... The SD75m's do look good. The one thing I did not like about the BNSSF merger was the demise of the Warbonnet paint scheme. Best paint scheme ever in my opinion.

Galaxy ... How about Potty Pacific Railway ? Everything comes out in the end.

Sir Madog

Good Afternoon!

No room to build a layout?

Look at this!

Oh dear, I guess MRRing really has gone into the crapper!

Let me guess? the  RVRR?  The Rim Valley RR? Would that be the Copper Tubing Express? The Cast Iron Pipeline Regular?  The Flushing Central?  The Flushing Meadows Line?  The Round River Line? Circ-U-Lation Line?  The Tid-Y-Bowl Express?  I guess this guy likes roundy-rounders RRs and Not point-to-point layouts!

Went to an interview and all but checking with my references will mean I am going to be a Hotel Front Desk Clerk, second shift. Naturally, my references were not home/work yesterday!

Other than that, I have slpt a lot..had an intense migraine preceeding a nasty storm yesterday adn last night, so had to sleep off the medication i take for it.

Workign second shift keeps my days free for my Appts and nights so i can still sleep!

ok, thats my real big news.

Prayers for all in need...

let you know later today how it turns out>...

In the second and last photo, with all lights on, the locomotives look like they're waiting for the signal ahead to change from red over yellow to red over green in order to proceed. Big Smile

Ken,

Update--track is clean, have started running a 4-6-0 that always made you wonder that when you sent it off if it would make it back--it has started running more smoothly, and even comes back to the starting point. I do believe the ATF is responsible for that, thank you again. Were you closer I would share some of my latest product with you. burns with a clear blue flame, and leaves no residue, and will ABSOLUTELY clean sinuses. Used some frozen strawberrys in the process.

Jimmy-B--

Pleased for you, when I was 23 I was married, had a daughter, and had a house with just over 1 mile of shorefront property here on the West side of the Island. I was also working two full time jobs, police officer, and commercial fishing. Also did carpentry when I wasn't busy.  If you can swing it, when you sign papers on your house pay one months payment up front, that will save you several thousand dollars in interest payment over the life of the loan. If you can make double payments each month, you will pay off your note in six years. I learned from a loan offficer at the local credit union. Also if you have a note,(car payment etc.) pay on the note each week, rather than once a month, you will save quite a bit on interest.

If you are interested, I still have a few of the photographs that were Dad's, that he acquired during the war when he was in charge of the B-17 program at McDonald aircraft at St. Louis Missouri. B-19 Super Bomber, PB2Y-3, A-36, (dive bomber version of the P-51), A-model of the P-51, before the Rolls engine, P-40, P-39 Coberas---PM a address and I will get copies off to you.

Thursday I get the injection that everyone hides behind a lead apron--except me--time to see what is going on/or not, with my  heart. The worst of the whole deal is no coffee on Wed. I do believe I will have a mug of coffee with me when I go into the lab, and just as soon as the proceedure is over will be sucking the bottom out of the container.  Went to pick up some script today, jumped from $45.00 to $347.58, no explanation--told the pharmacist to hold that thought, will talk with the doctor, and the insurance company tomorrow. If I have to I will bring my cutting torch up onto the deck, and tap into the oxygen tank.

Crocus are coming into full bloom, daffodils are just over 1/2 open, and judging from the buds, we should have a good year for blossoms. We have two Cardinals in the most vibrant breeding plumage that I think I have ever seen. both are stunning. Goldfinch have almost acquired all of their yellow feathers, wild turkeys are coming up to the base of the deck feeding on the seed spilled by the other birds. One more week, roast turkey---.

Ulrich,

Enjoy the vidoes, glad Petra is improving.

Ken,

Thanks again for the tips.

Lion,

Good to see your posts--

Prayers for those in need--

Good evening all.

Chloe - A nice RBF please. Thanks.

Weather - Lead off topic tonight due to the fact a Tornado touched down nearby, no damage at my place though. US RTE 6 is closed all directions right nearby due to a power pole that came down across the road. (I never lost power though.) Numerous trees and power poles came down further east of me, and reports to emergency services and 911 dispatch did have a tornado on the ground for a little while. Skywarn (storm chasers in my area) also reported a funnel cloud a couple miles from my house tonight, and that is the one that might have touched down a little ways further east. (They also were reporting a "ground level" tornado with tree damage from this same storm once it was to my south east.) Lots of hail and flooding as well.

YGW - LG service is subbed out to A&E Factory Services in our area, but they must pass a qualification course put on by LG to do the work. If they don't pass,  I do find it odd that Kitchenaid is not as good in your area, as they are made by Whirlpool Corp., who also makes Maytag, and their service is usually pretty good. LG makes their own, as well as high end Kenmore Elite products. (Cheap Kenmore is also Whirlpool Corp.)

Ed - Sorry about your losing Cicero. That is never a good thing. You might chuckle about what my kitty did just the other night, to tease the dog. He jumped onto the couch next to me, and snuggled up as close as he could. He then started rubbing his face on my arm, and then, after looking to see if the dog was indeed watching, began licking my hand. I said out loud, you are really trying to make the doggy jealous, aren't you?, and then asked him if he could possibly ham it up anymore at all, and he just looked at me and went back to licking my hand. When the dog left the room, he stopped and jumped down from the couch immediately. Yes, he was indeed just trying to get the dog jealous!

Ulrich - Heidi looks good!

Ken - We are actually informing our customers to not run any ethanol in any of their lawn mowers, tractors, weed whackers, chain saws, etc... as the ethanol (even as low as 10%) is killing the small engines. (It is warping carberators and destroying engine seals.) And no manufacturer warranty (at least that we have) is covering ethanol damage. So, ethanol free for all my small gas engines!

W**k - Good month so far sales wise. We are ahead of this time last year, so that is good.

Trains - Ordered some Kapton tape (finally took the plunge!) to finish the SD40-2 project, and will also use some on the next couple engine projects. (Might redo a BB GP60 I had already completed a DCC install in as well, as the Kapton tape will work better than the current electrical tape that is in it now.)

Hope all are well, and all have a good night!

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed, Tom and I will have a Beer please.

Ray While I was wondering if the Gas Lawn Mower would start I did look at new electric mowers. This Corn Gas is killing a lot of things beside Corn! When you add 10% Corn to normal gas, you have a 10% drop in power which means you use more Corn Gas and the only one that benafits are Farmers, Fule Line Manufacturers, Gas Tank Manufacturers, and repair shops!

Jimmy What is your Zip Code? For the heck of it I like to see what a $20,000 to $35,000 house looks like? Other things to look at is what the insurance and proptery tax is. My House payment is $739.41. $99.10 is princpal, $253.82 in intrest the rest of the $386.39 is inusurance and proptery tax. Ask for Insrances qoutes for full replacment cost on the $25,000 house. Bet rebuilding the $25,000 house is not $25,000.

Ulrich While Heidi is not my cup of tea, it is a very good looking engine!

Train Front All most had another old friend on the Main Line. Old Athearn Blue Box F7b Santa Fe. Stole the decoder something like 4 years ago. Got her runing with a DC chip (wired for DCC) and was pulling like .80 amps free running. That no good! Lubed her up and it helped, dropped to .63 amps. So I lubed again and had to much oil this time, Armature started somking and motor would die, restart, die and Amp readings went to 2.35! Pretty sure I killed it, but cleaned the armature with CRC and sandpaper. Took a few days and free wheeling it dropped down to .38 amps free wheeling and stalled at .86 amps so it should be good!

Installed a used DH 123 I had, when to speed match it and would not move. Funny decoder pro can read a dead decoder, but I am sure the Santa Fe F7b is good! Yes

 Later Ken

Hello Fellow Diners,

A large cup of Fair Trade coffee with coconut creamer please.

Ed/GMpullman, sorry for the loss of your cat Cicero, he looks like he had been a great companion and friend for you and your family.

Today is my day off, so it's a good day to catch up on various projects. I am going to visit a friend's place soon and replace the ball-cock in their toilet with one of those replacement kits they sell at home improvement stores. I put two into the toilets at my mom's house and they've worked well.

On the MR front, I've been on a resin kit building streak lately. I've built, painted, and lettered three F&C Reading boxcars. They are ready to go. I also built a PRR F33 well hole flatcar. I'll track test it on my club layout tonight before doing the painting and lettering. For anyone wanting to try resin kits, I recommend the F&C PRR F33 flatcar model.

BLI will send me a new decoder for my model of T1 2102, so *fingers crossed* that is all I'll need to get my model of 2102 running again. It currently looks great in my display case with numerous Preiser figures and a painted and assembled Tichy water column.

I just got my first two Kadee 2-bay AAR 50-ton hoppers, and wow, these are superb. One painted Pittsburgh and Shawmutt, and the other in the Reading roman lettering scheme. All I've done is replace the wheels with Intermountain Code-88 wheels and the couplers with the Glatzl dummy couplers offered by Sergent Engineering. They're stand-ins until I can get more of their regular couplers.

Angel - Hope you feel better today

I feel a little better today. Apparently my stomach is a still upset but it might just be hunger.

I don't think I would make a toilet railroad.
