Good morning ...

Just out of curiousity, does Daylight Savings time cause climate change ? .... Whistling

It's cool here now.

Continuing with this months theme. As a kid, I rode on various trains in Wisconsin between Chicago and the Minnesota. (I grew up near Chicago.) The Milwaukee Road named its trains "Hiawathas". This photo shows one of them leaving Chicago for Milwauee and points beyond.

My favorite tool for cutting foam is a snap blade. I tried steak knives and a hot wire cutter and, for me, neither came anywhere near to the results from the snap blade. By controlling the length of the exposed blade, you can control the amount of bend in the blade which is great for shaping. Hands down, my favorite.

One other foam tip, for what it is worth. When it comes time to sweep up all of the static-infused strips, a light mist from a water bottle neutralizes the static and makes it much easier to sweep up.

Der- Progress is looking good. Don't worry about the missing scenery ideas it will come in time.
yes, letting things sit and perk generally has good results. For instance, Ulrich’s Swiss layout has that road and river crossed by a stone bridge – and that inspired me to put in a stream and the road access I hadn’t thought about before to the N mainline station below my N3n line. This has resulted in a drastic narrowing of the scenery depth available for that line so the “wandering curves” which would increase the track length run up the grade will have to be reduced. Just what the final result of that will be I’m not sure, but I’m confident that the resolution of these things will come after just letting it digest a bit over a few nights. I’m hoping that the kit from which that bridge will be built will come in the mail next week – maybe as early as Monday. Until I get that built up I can’t really see exactly where the bridge makes land-fall on the far side of the stream. Once I know that I can get on figuring the grade’s path. I’m planning on building the track-bed on the bridge on the grade. I know this is done with steel bridges – but does anyone know if stone bridges were built on grades? Ultimately of course it’s “My Layout, My Rules”; but it would be nice to know. Here’s where matters stand for the scenery build as of this evening.

Bob:    to the Diner! I see YGWhas set you up with vitals! The seating, being virtual, is limitless – I think it has to do with the vast empty spaces inside atoms! So, if you were in someone’s seat – should such a thing exist - they wouldn’t likely notice anyway. There are booths available, and of course stools at the RC (Rivet Counter). You’ll get to know the staff soon enough, but beware upsetting Vinnie, the Maitre d’…
moelarryc: That’s WAY too many tornados this early! Further comment would likely get political! Whistling
We’re back in the deep freeze for tonight and through tomorrow – with a Nor’ Easter thrown into the mix mid-week. “Sheila’s Brush” ‘tis known locally. Almost without fail coming up to mid-March we get something of this sort.
Don’t forget to shift the clocks forward tonight – I’m off to do that now. Goodnight all, and Prayers for all in need. Angel

 Evening Diners?

Flo, wake up! I will have a Beer, if Ed and Jim make it in given them a Beer as well.

DC Jim On cutting foam I use a razor blade. If it a 2" thick section, I make the first cut, bend a little and cut again. You might try a cheap Harbor Freight razor knife for opening boxes. There blade slides out and will get around 4" long. (blade can be broken off bit by bit)  I thing they are around 49 cents or so.

For craving the foam I use a bread knife. Yes, it makes a mess but that is why I have a shop vac. On semi smooth slopes I use a sanding block and 220 grit sand paper. Again, it makes a mess but I like the resulits.

DC Jim, to cut foam I use a hot wire that I bought at Michaels. It is battery powered, was cheap, and it works very well. No mess.

Another cold day here so a good one for a little work on the layout. I should be able to get the last of the ground foam down this weekend.

Tried cutting some extruded foam, but the first attempt was less than successful. The cut had more of a reptilian shape than a straight edge. Wrong type of blade and wrong technique. Will make another attempt this week.

Try using a hot knife. I use a lot of bead board type foam for my hill construction. (A lot of recycled packing blocks from irrigation pipe and sheets of beadboard insulation.) If I don't use the hot knife, it creates a great mess but the hot knife melts the foam and the "beads" don't get all over the place. It does take a bit of practice to get the cuts exactly right but it is a very handy tool.

Hobby Front: Got the decal sheets that I had ordered. First piece of business is to get a coating of decal protectant on them. Even if they are new from the company, I put a coating on them. (Improves the strength of them especially on stripes.) I got three of them sprayed last night and need to get the other three sprayed. (The area I use is only big enough for three sheets.)

Afternoon diners,

yougottawanta

Angel - I am very interested in the Wood land Plug system. Can you keep us posted on how that goes ?

I just planning on placing them on without lighting it up. If the layout was more permanent I might turn them on.

Thank Ken, Beer cheers!

YGW.  Those must have been some thick grade beams.  I actually did an early retirement at 62, in July of 2011, as the union expects 63 as a full retirement age.  I took a tiny, tiny hit on my pensions for it, but nothing I miss.

I was a member of the BAC (Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman) for a short time, so I get a small pension from that, but I was in the OPCMIA Local 599 for 30 yrs. http://opcmia599.com/   where my main pension comes from.

Back in the early 80's, I was a forman for a mason and concrete firm that did hundreds of basements, block, brick, etc., in all of the fast growing subdivisions around the Milwaukee / Waukesha, WI area.  On a typical 12 to 1400 sq. ft. ranch, 3 of us, 2 finishers and a laborer were expected to have the garage floor, basement floor, and front and back stoops done and out of there in two days.

On the 3000 and up sq. ft houses, I got an extra finisher and an extra day, maybe 2.  You have to keep moving, but all in all, where else are you going to get a good pension and excellent health coverage, for life!

I spent the last 20 years working for a huge GC, WWTF's, was where I spent a lot of time.

Your shed looks like a great idea, train room with a basement, and garage.

See you all later diners!

Mike.

Evening all,

Since Mother Nature is bipolar and it's back down to 25 degrees after being 80 on Thursday, I'll have a nice Hot Fudge Sunday, hold the nuts.

Henry - Didn't know that I was in such esteemed company. Three years ago this spring I had my aortic valve replaced for the same reason. No souvenir pictures though.

Ed - I attended several knee replacement surgeries while doing clinical rotations. They still look like an episode of This Old House.

YGW - Sounds like a hectic week. Surprised that you survived the meeting with the FM. Usually when you argue with the inspectors it's like arguing with your wife..... Even if you win, you still loose.

Doing the 911 gig tonight. Three calls so far tonight, and two of them have been at motels that advertise "great weekly and monthly rates". Definitely NOT 4 star quality. I frequently stayed at one of them 17 years ago when I was building my house, but things have gone down hill since then. Now I lock the doors to the ambulance while I'm inside the patients room.

Finally got started on a new layout. GE Appliance Park is still on the horizon, but I decided that it wasn't the wisest move to start with that monster as the first layout after a 30 year absence. Now I'm working on some modular pieces that will help refresh the skills and give me something to play with while working on the larger stuff.

Tried cutting some extruded foam, but the first attempt was less than successful. The cut had more of a reptilian shape than a straight edge. Wrong type of blade and wrong technique. Will make another attempt this week.

Been doing a lot of browsing for plans. Came across Spookshow's "Confessions of a Mediocre Modeler". All I can say is that I aspire to "mediocrity".

Time to hit the sack again. Hopefully will get to sleep until shift change at 0800.

Just curious, Howmus, are you really getting 20 Lb. or is it 15?

I recently became aware that they were only filling them with 15 pounds of LP around here. I'm sure they are doing it for the "convenience" of the customer, like the 15% flavor enhancement solution that gets pumped into our meat products.

Just wonderin'

Ed

I have no idea as I pay for by the gallon, not lbs.  They are filled as much as they can be at this dealers and I am standing right there when the pump lugs down and he has to shut off the fill.  The 3 tanks came to 13.4 Gal.  Which is pretty close.  If you are trading in your bottles (like at a convenience store) then the store may be not filling them completely so they are "Easier to lift..."  WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin.  The new equipment that is used in the tanks today for safety may also take up an amount of space (I think I was told that back when) which means the tanks can't hold quite as much as they used to.  But.......  The tanks are called 20lb. bottles.  So that's what I refered to them as....

Just as a sideline, back when I was a Scoutmaster the owner of the place brought his training equipment in to a meeting and did basically the same training for the scouts and the parents as he does with new hires.  He very much reinforced the safety proceedures and the dangers of using and handling Propane.  He had a small glass lined bottle he connected to a small stove where we could actually see the propane boiling inside the tank as we watched the frost build up on the outside....  Way beyond what we had to learn to be certified by the Boy Scouts in Liquid Fuels and fastinating!

The fact that I was out of propane got me to load all 3 20lb. tanks into the Volt and go over to the Dealer

I was looking for a post I made about looking I made that had a link to youtube videos of private railcars.  The title was If I win Powerball.  The search said the post had been deleted.  Not sure what rule I violated.  Was I promoting gambling?  Dunno.

Anyway found a for sale site for railcars.  Speeders at $4k and up, cabeese 10K and up, and RDC for $90K and passenger cars form $35k to 500K.  I expect the low end prices would need some work  Big Smile

You can even by an S2, a couple of steam engines, hoppers, gondolas and Hy Rails.  http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/index_rw.asp

So far the lottery hasn't come thru and Ivanka hasn't picked me as her old man toy so I just have to be satisified to dream.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a cup of decaf right at the moment...  Thank you Ma'am!

I spent the day running errands and hoping that some of the people I need to hear from (NMRA) would have their power back on and get back to me.....  Went over to the Collegfe Fieldhouse and walked a mile on the track this morning.  Yep, getting back to it after way too long an absence.  Have made it over there to do a mile 3 days this week.  This afternoon I went down to the local printer to oder the invites for the MLK Scholarship Dinner.  He is located in a one way street right in the middle of downtown.  There is almost always a few parking spots in the alley, but today, I circled around 4 times and every slot was filled.  So I parked around the corner up the street.  Walked back to his shop and there, right in front of his place is....... an open parking space.  Oh well the extra walk didn't hurt me.  He told me that line crews from several states and Quebec in Canada are still trying to get power back up for a couple hundred thousand customers in the Rochester Area.  Quite a mess I guess.

Decided I wanted to use the BBQ Grill tonight in the wind and cold.  The fact that I was out of propane got me to load all 3 20lb. tanks into the Volt and go over to the Dealer I buy from (former member of my Troop Committee).  One of the guys who usually is out delivering in one of their tank trucks waited on me.  He was supposed to be in the suburbs of Rochester today delivering.  Said he decided to deliver tomorrow and hope the roads are passable (in other words, all the downed trees have been cleaned up).  While I was out I made my run to the Natural Food Store in town and got my month's supply of organic coffee and such.  Also got some time to work on the layout as well.

Taxes.....  Got mine done by the second week of February and have already spent my Tax Refund....  The Volt is paid for!  Only "Stocks" I have are invested in Green Funds in my IRA which was my Late Wife's Retirement funds.  I just leave them there......

A couple historical (Non .....  ahem) quotes from me:

"Illegitimi non carborundum" - attributed to British intelligence early in WWII and adopted as a motto by US General Joe Stillwell

"I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again......" - Tubthumping (Chumbawumba)

Have a great night and stay safe!

Working on taxes.   I did not do much stock trading last year and only had 8 pages of transactions.  The rate I am going next year it will be 40 pages.

I cooked hamburgers on the grill tonight, it was windy, sunny and snowing.  I don't think I ever cooked in the snow before.    The wife likes hers well done.....that's worse than my surgery pic.Confused

Ed - thanks again

FRRYKid - I will check the PM. Thanks

Mike - LOL no that guy is a finisher, he had the job of moving the pump hose ( elephants trunk ) around. The grade beams took 8 yards of concrete ! He is waiting for the next truck to back up and start unloading. There were three guys who formed, poured and finished 1200 sq ft of slab in 6 hours ! I think the total was over 30 yds of concrete.

How in the world did you make it to retirement finishing concrete ? Most guys don't last past there 40s before the work kills or breaks there backs and they have to go on disability and or another line of work !

Hi diners!  It's been awhile, but now that you are only 30 miles from my home, I figured I stop in.

Actually, as a retired finisher, I had a sense that concrete was being poured, I just couldn't stay away!  Laugh  I'll have a cold Beer and watch the show.  I love watching other guys work!

Is that the pump operator with the remote?  or is that the lone finisher wondering were the heck his help disapeared to?  It's NOT break time yet! Laugh

And by the way Ed, I think in my Pinterest I have a colored picture of the twins.  I'll see if I can get in here.  I think framed, it will look great in the diner.

OK, lets go, that mud isn't going to pour itself!

Good Afternoon, Folks

On behalf of YGW I'll be posting photos of the progress on his Hobby Barn. Hopefully I'll keep the descriptions in order along with the photos...

Here is a photo of the slabs being poured. To the right the "grade beams" have already been poured.

Hobby barn after the walls have been poured, stripped, foundation coating applied, drain board installed and backfilled. I have installed the pressure treated plates in preparation for installing the floor joist.

The area being framed is where the Train room will be. That area is 24' x 24'.

Well, there you have it!  Model Railroading sure IS fun!!!

Since today's Friday, today's traditional Wisconsin food offering will be only slightly healthier. Practically every restaurant in the state offers a fish fry on Fridays. Must be a state law or something, like the one that says you can't finish out a basement unless you also install a bar down there. Anyway, dig in.

Given the time of year, I will take up your offer of the fish.

Steven ... Your posts remind me. I see Walthers has recenty released a model in its Cornerstone series of a Culvers restaurant which is a Midwest fast-food chain selling butter burgers and frozen custard.

Yep. Culvers' frozen custard is pretty good, especially their "Cement Mixers" (they mix just about anything in that you can think of). But you have to go to a local non-chain custard stand if you want a broader variety of flavors. And Culver's idea of a butterburger is a burger on a buttered bun. Meh.

Good Afternoon!

My back is killing me! The doc gave me a prescription for some really heavy stuff, including something to protect my stomach, but as of yet, I don´t notice any positive effects. I should have gone for that medical Cannabis stuff - I bet I´d still feel the pain, but would be a lot happier Stick out tongue

He also wants me to get an MRT done, just to exclude the risk of a slipped disk,so I called the nearest radiology clinic doing such things to get an appointment. Guess when I will have that? You are right, a week after Easter! I still remember times when you had that done either the same day or not later than trhe following.

No, Vinnie, this is not political nor a rant, just facts. If I have a slipped disk I guess I could be wheelchair-bound in 6 weeks...

I hope everyone is dry and safe!

Good morning .... The cold front certainly cooled off things. Snow is possible tomorrow. So, I'll get back into the model railroad room this weekend instead of outdoor activities. ....

Yesterday, it was sunny and in the 70's. More work on the Porsche plus driving it just for fun.

Happy model railroading !

One end changed fron yellow to black, although the paint coverage was bad enough that I think I might end up using some stripper and start from scratch. The other end gets turned white. (Going very light coats with that. Got a second coat put on four of the cars before I had to go to work yesterday. Those will probably need another coat. The other car is still up in the air.) Hopefully I will see the decal sheets that I ordered in the next few days. Next major purchase will be to save my money and get Adair Shops weight kits for these cars. (They are somewhat expensive but I have them in many of my freight cars and all of the FRRY's passenger cars and I love them. The original five Thrall gons have them installed as well.)

I also got another project in the mail. A major hobby retailer is cleaning out old stock and I got a car for 75% off retail and I will get that one built at some point soon.

Not that I need more peojects but they keep creeping up on me.

They took pictures?!? I guess that's not unusual.

Years ago (1972) I worked at a film processing lab. We did all the films for the Cleveland Clinic. Yes, even back then—on 16mm film—they filmed (nearly) all the operations.

I saw films of early knee replacements back then! It looked more like "This Old House" than a medical procedure. Indifferent I mean, drills, epoxy, big wood mallets, hack saws!

Lots of heart and lung work, too, and a few other operations that are best left to the imagination.

Gee, thanks for the memories, Henry Smile

Cheers to all... Ed

Hey diners,

My siblings broke my weight scale. They were trying to weight Charles to see if he lose or not.

I received my Walthers box with the Woodland Scenics plug light system. I was surprised to see how thin the posts were. N Scale still surprising me of the scale another than locomotives and rolling stock.

Howdy ... We are having storms now, but I'm glad we have not lost our power. A while ago we had hail stones about an inch in diameter.
