Good Evening,
Another severe thunderstorm watch in effect here and it is starting to rain now. We had a line of storms go through around supper time.
YGW, I am upgrading to more detailed rolling stock which for me means seperate grab irons, etc. I don't have that much rolling stock and my layout is very small so detail really shows up. At most I can have about 15 cars in sidings plus whatever is on the train in action. I usually have all but one switcher on the layout as I can store them in the service yard. Over time I have reduced the number of locos from about 20 to the current roster of 10.
Tomorrow I go for a hearing test with a specialist as my wife says I can't hear anything. I do know that I have trouble with high frequencies. I expect it is the result of listening to loud bands in my misspent youth. I remember that my ears would be ringing when I came home most Friday and Saturday nights plus some week-days too.
Herrinchoker, it is amazing how much force water has coming into a small 'hole' in the bottom of a boat. When I had my sailboat I would remove the speed log transducer to clean it which had a 2" through hull in the bottom. Wow, there would be a gyser shooting up at least a foot in the air and I would be in for 10 minutes of pumping on a manual bilge pump after about a minute of water coming in. Sometimes I do miss sailing as it was my passion for 30 years.
Well time for a little TV.

gmpullman,
The flange bolts and nuts were machined from a very hi-tensile steel, and the flange bolts were double nutted. On the face of the valve flanges I would plunge a "v" shaped tool bit into the face .030. and then feed .060 to make a "phonograph" finish to grab the valve gasket.
I learned the trade at Hyde Windlass, we made steering gears for ships, deck machinery, distillers for fast attack nuke subs, forming machines (egg cartons) for Keyes Fiber in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, ASROC rocket launchers, and made propellors for boats up to 180 feet, until the foundry was closed, pumps for GE- multi stage 4-12 feet in diameter, up to 60 feet long, and expansion joints for piplines, up to 6 feet in diameter.
People are not familiar with the power of steam, there was a conversion that was forced to anchor just south of the company while space was made at the main service dock. When the time came to pull the anchor, it would not come up--sooo in comes the Navy rep running his mouth as to how no-good the anchor windlass we made was. Two of the old timers were taken out to the destroyer. After checking the windlass out, they rang for steam, engaged the drive, and walked away.
When the ship had been drawn down almost 4 feet at the bow the conclusion was made that the windlass worked fine, the anchor was stuck in a crevasse in the ledge on the bottom. It is still there.
It was reported that one of the Hyde Employees went up one side of a Lt.jg, and down the other about bad mouthing a windlass he had help build before the jg. had been hatched.

Thanks for the nice comments on the photos.
Rick: I didn't check the fuel levels. I figured the pilot was up there with us too so it was his butt in the drink as well as ours. I think he knew what he was doing.
MisterB: We were close enough. At one point momma Grizzly chased a salmon to within 60 - 80 ft. of us. She didn't pay any attention to us. She wanted the salmon. Bear spray was at the ready.
The camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX300 with a built in telephoto lens. The camera works great, but the LCD display is often very hard to see in daylight so getting the subject centered in the frame can be a challenge.
Ray: Thanks for the travel suggestions.
Richard: Thanks for your comments.

Here is the Ma & Pa roundhouse in Baltimore now owned by the highway dept
It looks like part of the roof is about to collapse. Am I seeing things?
Good Evening all,
Worked today (12-8) Off next three days, back on Fri.
In one of my storage drawers in my room, I have a caboose track with HO cabooses with different roadnames, I have about 6 right now and I plan to add a second track.
These are the cabooses I have so far:
1. Athearn Santa Fe Cupola Caboose (Red/Yellow Cross)
2. Walthers 30' Caboose CBQ (Brown/Black Roof)
3. Athearn Wide Vision Missouri Pacific Caboose (Red)
4. Bowser N5C Caboose Pennsylvania (Brown/Black Roof)
5. Athearn Bay Window Caboose Southern RY (Red)
6. Roundhouse Outside Braced Wood Caboose MKT (Sloan Yellow/Black Roof)
Do any of you guys have a caboose track to show various types owned by different roads on your layout?
This is like the display track at Fullerton Station.
I'm looking for a Trix Marklin' New York Central Caboose, a Walthers Southern Pacific C-30-1 Caboose, and a Walthers CA-1 Union Pacific Caboose.
Good morning ... Last night we returned home from visiting family in Southwestern Ohio. ... I hope to get back to model railroading later today.
Wow !... You Diners have been busy and have much to talk about. I can't begin to respond all the comments.
Dave .. Looks like a trip with beautful scenery and wildlife. ... Eagles are beautiful, nad we can ofetn see them on our property here in wetern Kentucky during the winter.
This eagle is one that was rescued. It has a broken wing and lives at the Nature Center in Land Between the Lakes (LBL). Our property is adjacent to LBL. I took the photo.
Ed ... Nice photos of your B&O and NYC models.
Rick J ... I'm glad to see you visiting the Diner.
ATSF ... Here are some of my cabooses. CB&Q called them "way cars".
I'm very concerned about Ulrich ... Praying he will be okay.

Morning diners,
I decided to work on my UP ARMN reefer cars with replacement reefer units. I wanted to change the new reefer unit on the cars with the old ones that I bought.(I thought this would be easy, but it wasn't.) I slightly chipped paint on the air grill (easily repainted with black paint no damage) on one car.
I thought I would open the car to push out the reefer unit and noticed it might be screwed into the car (which it didn't) and no way to push it out... No one say that these units were glued in place. (Easy to place) yeah right!
It the end I have two springs that I can't put back. A half reefer unit platform slightly off the car. My two cooler units on the cars. No major problems really just need little super glue and the cars will be good as new again.
My wake up today with a very dry throat and urges to cough uncontrollably, but I don't feel like sleeping again. My family can't function without me, I don't why. I know they can wash dishes, cook, take dog outside to go potty. I wonder if I'm emotional sick; day in and day out without realizing it. My dad treats me like a butler.

Good Afternoon!
Just dropping by to say I am still around, though battling my old heart issue and a nasty depression coming from that.
I hope better days will come soon.
Lunch Time !
Another busy day at w**k. Thats okay the day goes by fast !
Ulrich - So happy to see you in here. Been praying for you ! Hope you get better soon.
Henry - The clouds in the back ground look like a tornado forming !
v8 - You were a machinist ! How small were the parts ? My brother and uncle are machinist. I think that is such a fascinating career. You have to know so much about different metals, the degrees of milling have to have such crazy close tolerances...
Lion - Your trip to your brothers is that for fun or is he ill ? Have a safe trip
Angel - Your dad treats you like a Butler ? What does he expect ?
Howmus - Your response violates the rules too.
Flip - Actually the sheriff was voted in this past election and he is not. Thats why I am especially disappointed in his underlings poor performance. I think there is some type of connection just not sure which. Family ? Friend of the family ?
Garry - Is the photo from your layput ? A few months ago I went to some of the other threads and invited peopel ( about 100 ) to join us in the diner, Some seem to think it is only for a few people for some reason. I think some of the increased activity is from that. I am very much enjoying the new folks. I am glad they came !
ATSF - Why do you want different caboose names ? Why from differnt manufactures ? That is a pretty wide spread in detailing stds. Just curious.
Dave - LOL - Well I am glad you made it back from the antique airline trip to the mouth of the river where the man eaters dwell ! What an adventure !
Herrinchoker - "distillers for fast attack sub" ? What do they have a still on board to get the enemy drunk !? just kidding. What is a distiller for on a sub ? How did they get the chain loose from the anchor ? Thats a lot of hacksawing ! I do not understand how some one can stick his hand through the bottom of the boat and not flood the ship. What am I missing here ?
Ken - Just remember a bad day of MRR is better than a good day at w**k !
CN Charlie - What ?! You reduced the number of locos ? Oh say it aint so !
Ed - Very nice cabooses. Did you build these ?
V8 - Man that is amazing. I had one tooth with an implant. It was 5k !
Rick J - LOL - Faster than a dog sled ?! I guess that is the planes only competition ?
FRRYKid - Are tthey still alive ? Were you ever able to show them your tribute ? I hope so.
Well gotta git back to w**k
YGW
YGW,
Regarding the caboose thing, I got the Idea after looking at the display tracks in Fullerton. It's like a museum track for cabooses to give the general public a key to the past.
Sir Madog Good Afternoon! Just dropping by to say I am still around, though battling my old heart issue and a nasty depression coming from that. I hope better days will come soon.
Welcome back, Ulrich!
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Evenin folks!
Ulrich, Good to see you my friend! Do hope the health issues get back to an even keel very soon for you. We all worry about you when you don't post......
I am microwaving a potato and will be frying up a hunk of codfish for supper toninght... Spent several hours today on my hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor. Man, was it filthy in places. It is a heavy tile floor and the grout lines and the uneven stone collect crud that won't come up by simple mopping... I have been putting this off for a couple years now. Want to get it done before the picnic a week from Saturday. I went to the Value Store and got a heavy duty non-toxic, biodegradable cleaner in a spray bottle that is doing a great job of removing the crud. I have it about half done... I may be watching the granddaughters tomorrow so it may or may not get finished then...
Sky is darkening up and they are predicting some heavy duty thunderboomers this evening... Better get the 'puter shut off for a while.
Later!

Hot, humid and just plain icky here.
Forming up foundation walls on house #2 for concrete on Thursday. Had a go-around with the know-it-all inspector today. Showed him that he actually didn't. That'll come back to bite me in the behind, I'm sure. (YGW will understand)

Evening all.
Yes Flo, I am here for my tab. Wifi got knocked out by our weekend storms.... Won't be back until Friday afternoon at the earliest. No Flo, I was not trying to dodge the RBF tab. What's that? Oh, of course I will cover the other flavors as well, yes.
Ulrich - Glad to see you popped in! Hope you get well enough to at least enjoy your trains again.
YGW - Glad your dad is getting better. Shame no charges yet, somebody must have a friend somewhere in that deal... No further comments on that, as I see Vinnie is getting up... No Vinnie, I wasn't going there with this, honest!
W**k - Had a good weekend, even after having to pull a open to close Saturday, other than getting 3 different deliveries! Our back room was full to bursting. Down to a more manageable 150 pieces or so left, from the 307 delivered. (By pieces, I mean totes and/or cases.) Found out tonight corporate doesn't think we associates know jack, they sent out a photo example of what our receipts we give our customers should look like once we highlight the survey on the bottom.... Seriously.... We could figure that one out on our own, guys.....
Hobby - Got zilch done over the weekend, with w**k, and a music party on Sunday afternoon/evening. (I play drums.) The best song had to be when my dad (lead/electric guitar), friends Steve (accoustic guitar, mic'ed up), Kenny (drums, and host), and Steve's sister Michelle (ukulele) did a CCR song, with Michelle on Uke! (Never thought it possible! But it sounded awesome!) The heartfelt moment was singing with a friend who can no longer play, due to advancing ALS. (He was a very good piano/keyboard player.)
Well, hope all are well, and everyone have a good night!

V8VEGA,
Sounds like you were involved with CNC work. That was just coming on line as I was leaving the industry. Much of what we did was +/- .000. We had to factor expansion/contraction of the metal we were working with, heat build up during the machining process, how long to cool the work before making the final cut, in some instances we would go to deminision with oil and emery cloth to bring the surface to size. When I was cutting bearing holders for Penn Crusher units I used three cuttting tools in the holder, negative rake, ceramic coated, and had them staggered so I could cut 3/4" of material off on one pass, with .050 feed. The chips would come off gold colored, and then flash to blue with an audible "tink" about three feet away form the cut. In taking that much off the heat build-up is minimized in the work. I started more than one fire with the chips landing on cardboard, rags, or pallets. I also hid behind a shield to keep from being burned. The rough casting we started with were around 1100 pounds. I lost one when I failed to properly tie it down to the turntable, started the cut, launched the casting, and had it land about a foot behind my right leg (I was leaving the area as it were) Fortuniately it broke through the work platen I operated from and kept it from grabbing my leg. After that I would reef down harder on the hold down strap bolts.
When I spent a time at Pejepscot Paper, the macine shop was belt fed from overhead drive shafts,we only had a German lathe with it's own power feed. The #1 paper machine was made in Baltimore Maryland in 1854, and had it's own shafting lathe built by the same company to use for journal replacement. The Smithsonian wanted the paper machine and the lathe, come that day---- we made about 70% of all black construction paper in the US in the mid-70s.
Submarines use distillers to make fresh water by boiling salt water, condensing the vapor to make fresh water. This is also done on large surface ships.
Ulrich. Glad to see you. Cheer up. Your friends here care about you.
YGW. ... Yes, the caboose photo is on my layout. I think it we good if we added the phrase "Everybody is welcome" to the title of the thread.
This evening I ran some trains over the tracks I have been working on. I'm pleased with the results .
The hole in the bottom of the boat, several issues cone to play, first and foremost crappy maintenance is first and foremost, the area in question was about 4-5 inches is size, was about 12 inches from the keel directly under a 12" suction pipe. The space, (steam generator #s 1&2) was located between firerooms 1&2, so there was no way for the ship to flood due to the watertight bulk heads. The hull is made from a lamanate steel, usually HY-80, sometimes T-1, and when not properly taken care of will rust and delaminate in a harsh enviroment, and can be fairly easily taken apart in that state.
Got the top, open bar, tab on me. herrinchoker
Good evening.
Celebrated number 74 today with a full day's work mowing grass at friend's wild rice camp. We had a couple of breakdowns but managed to mow everything that needed mowing. After mowing we went to check the rice at an other lake and got stuck in a bog when trying to leave. Thanks to an electric wench on the Yamaha Rhino quad, we were able to pull the Rhino out of the bog. Lots of rain early this summer turned the bog into soup.
Freinds took us out for Chinese food for birthday diner and then some homemade cherry pie, my favorite birthday dessert.
Lion, hope you have a most enjoyable vacation trip.
Ulrich, prayers for better health in your future.
Got to talk to my granddaughter who share my birthday. She turns 14 today.

ricktrains4824Found out tonight corporate doesn't think we associates know jack Ricky same here and it had me fuming most of the day! I had a Wells Fargo deal, that had problems with getting the box springs up the stair. So I had to charger her more for split queen box spring. Being a Finances deal made it harder. So I did it the best way I could so the company would get paid! I tried to explain to him on the phone what I had to do, he did not like my answer, so he hung up on me! I came close to walking out! Guess I messed some CV's up some how? I am happy, tickled to see the B&O F7A working for a living! Later, Ken

G'd Evening Gang,
No, I haven't left the Diner. I have been checking in almost daily, but really haven't done anything on the LM&E lately so I just peeked through the windows to see who was around at the time and to keep up with most of the news.
We adopted a new dog when we were down visiting my Son, who had been fostering him for the animal shelter. He was a rescue that had been taken to the shelter because some one had shot him with a shotgun. He has lost his right eye, split the top of his left ear, has a groove across his snout and a pellet lodged in his right ear. He is between 10 months and a year old. I believe he is mainly Heeler, some Lab and Shepard. But he has the most wonderful personality. He loves other dogs and kids and has really taken to my Wife and I. He is house trained and jnows a few basic commands. We have had him for about three weeks now and he and I do lots of walking. he walks on a lead well, no pulling. We are going to start some formal training next week.
Ulrich, I'm still pulling for you. Would love to see you up and at it real soon.
MoonBoy, Happy Birthday, didn't know you were younger than I am. Sounds like you are having a great time on your summer get away. Are you in Manitoba or Saskatchewan, I can't remember.
Garry, You've put quite a few miles on this year. Glad they have all been safe ones. I hope your next trip to Vanderbuilt is successful for you.
YGW. Prayers continue for your family, hope there will be some resolutions on a lot of different fronts there before long.
Br. Elias, enjoy your holiday and I hope you find your Family in good health. And for you, watch yourself in all those subways, we don't want you coming back as sliced wilderbeast.
Terry, Enjoyed seeing the new works going on in the layout room, looks great. Do tell us how good the fishing has been r have you been avoiding it because of the construction schedule?
FrryKid, I waved at you as we went through Miles City both ways. But you can't be too tall as I didn't see you waving back. I like the lettering in the trees, Not a fan of the pink loco though.
CN. Charlie, Nice to hear from you as well and that you are enjoying your pat times of gardening, bird watching eating out and visiting your friends Stateside.
Brunton, was great to see you back on the forums, I have missed you and your Layout. My Son actually lives in Laurel.
Mr. B, is the hockey not over yet ? It will soon be time to start the new season.
Cuda Ken, sure hope the yard war is over soon for you and you get more time to enjoy those added HOPPERS.
Those I have missed naming, I have kind thoughts and wishes for you too.
Many happy and safe miles to all you BIKE Guys. Don't get heat stroke as that is NO fun.
I've got three days off right now and I am quite tired so I'm going to shut down now and bid you all sweet dreams of Streamliners humming through the tunnels of America.

yougottawanta FRRYKid - Are tthey still alive ? Were you ever able to show them your tribute ? I hope so.
Nope, I was not. My grandfather passed in 1980 from a stroke IMMS. (He also had lung cancer and hardening of the ateries.) My grandmother passed Mar 1, 2001 from kidney failure proximate to congestive heart failure. (The diuretics to reduce the fluids around the heart caused her kidneys to shut down.) The road number 3101 is from that date. As an aside, the road number of the passenger unit is 1412, her birthdate (January 4, 1912). Given she probably paid for a fair percentage of the railroad when I was starting out, it seemed a resonable tribute.
last mountain & eastern hogger FrryKid, I waved at you as we went through Miles City both ways. But you can't be too tall as I didn't see you waving back. I like the lettering in the trees, Not a fan of the pink loco though.
Thank you for thinking about me as you drove by. Unfortunately, unless it's Sunday I not usually near the interstate. I will admit that the color most likely would not have been used on a real railroad. The closest to pink I have seen were these DT&I cars as an example:
http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=69221
http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=45683
I had seen these or similar cars in a magazine, I think. At the time this was originally painted, I didn't have quite the internet resources at my fingertips as I do now.
Mornin' Diners. Just a quick pop-in before hitting the hay! Chloe, how about a baked apple with a pinch of cinnamon with a little cream.
I had a sick goat on my hands this morning and she didn't make it much past noon. Had to bury the poor girl, Patty (born on St. Patrick's Day) one of the sad down-sides of being a hobby farmer.
Herrinchoker, those are some interesting stories you have. I enjoy hearing about, and better yet, seeing big, intricate machinery. It would make me nervous getting down to the final cuts on a piece that you have, maybe a hundred hours on, then ouch! Something gets messed up. I've seen it at GE where I worked. Quarter-million dollar part gets destroyed in a sintering furnace or some other disaster... can be painful!
Ken! Remember, Model Railroading is FUN , try to keep repeating that. The truck retainers must have popped off in shipping when the USPS used the box for a wheel chock. I know that Pennsy SD7 is around ten years old or so but I really don't recall running it all that much. I had a pair with the same engine number so I just grabbed one and put it in the box. Now I KNOW you can take apart a Life-Like SD7 and re-assemble it in your sleep so it should be a stroll in the park for you to get them running in top order.
There must be some stray ohms leaking out of your electricity in Illinois? I'm pretty sure I reset both decoders in the A and B units then only set the decoder to the engine number. I ran them as a pair the whole time I had them but I bought them used off the 'Bay. I test-ran them using a Sprogg and everything seemed fine but the A unit was making a drive-shaft ticking sound. That should be an easy fix.
You're using DecoderPro it should be a two-minute job to reset and assign the address. I don't remember what the wiring looked like on the B&LE SD. Presently I'm going through some decoder installs that I did back in 2005-2006 on a handful of engines. Some of these I have old DH-121s in and some have incandescent bulbs that I'm redoing in LEDs. (back then there wasn't much choice in color temp of LEDs)
I feel bad that w**k stresses you out so badly, then you have to deal with DCC problems. The Model RR is supposed to help you forget about w**k!
Anyway, you'll be up and running in no time.
I just got a call from TrainWorld today saying the Broadway Limited P-70 coaches are in and will be shipped today! Fun Stuff!
I wish everyone reading this a safe and healthful day. My thoughts and prayers to all who are in need.
Regards to all, Ed
Good morning ...
JohnBoy ... That's very nice of you to rescue the young dog. I'm sure he will be a good pet. ... I can't stand animal abuse and encourage people to contribute if they can to organizations who rescue animals.... Our neighbors have a rescue cat who was also shot. The cat is blinded in one eye as is your new pet. They named the cat "Winky". ... Thanks for the comments about my health issues. I can do normal stuff most of the time.
Ed ... I like the photo with NYC observation and NYC E8. ..... Goats? ... Actually one of my sisters has some. By now, you've probably heard enough goat jokes; so I won't kid you. ....
FR RY .... I recall see the DT&I freight cars when I lived near Detroit several years ago. They selected Easter egg colors for freight cars. It was mostly for 86' auto parts cars, and I recall being told the colors were picked out by the wife of the DT&I president. It did not take many years for rust to make them look ugly.
Ken .... Sounds like you have some fun times with locomotives.
Jim ... Happy birthday ...
We are enjoying what our weather guessers call "calm Autumn weather", although it´s a bit early for that. Nice and sunny, dry and not too hot. I went for a short walk, but had to stop after 15 minutes or so. That put me back into the doldrums, but not as deep down as the days before. There is a reasonj behind, which I will be able to tell in a few days.
A couple of days ago, I made another short video of my layout, whichj I´d like to share.
Unfortuantely, the loco has started to show more wear and tear since I made this video, so the layout won´t see any train action anymore. Might as well go forward and try to sell it. At least I can say I enjoyed it while it lasted!
Janie, just some coffee for me, please! I´ll be staying at the RC for a while.
