Good morning!  Yeah, it's Monday, but I'm retired so it doesn't make much of a difference to me.

The plan for the day is bike riding.  That's the plan for the day every day, weather permitting.  I need to squeeze in some gym time, too, but this run of seriously beautiful weather should not be wasted indoors.  If my bathroom scale is to be believed, I've lost a couple of pounds over the last two weeks.  The honesty of my bathroom scale, though, rivals that of politicians.

My Fathers' Day greetings consisted of a text from my daughter, a text from a lady friend and finally a line in a follow-up email from my wife after discussing plans to pick her up at the airport later this week.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special this morning, eggs over easy, bacon, homefries, and a double order of the sour doufgh toast with grape jelly.  Oh, yes, need a large pot of Marrakesh Express dark roast coffee to keep my R&GV RR Mug filled for a while.

Yes, I was not able to log in over the weekend either, and I stay logged in all the time....  An hour ago I still could't get in the door.

Opening weekend out at the Museum was very successful I'm told.  Bigger crowds than last year for Fathers Day weekend even with very high temps (85+) both days (It was NOT a dry heat either) and an air quality alert for the Rochester, NY area.  It didn't seem to be that busy but we now are running 3 cabeese.  Last year we had only the two in service so we were crowded most of the time.  Kept on schedule very well both days too.

Both days I had some old friends from Geneva show up.  On Saturday, on the second run when we had set the train at the restoration building we were starting to detrain and the conductor comes out with a big grin on his face and tells me there is a guy on board his caboose who I may know.  Yep!  Right behind him is the guy who used to repair all my equipment back when I was doing live sound and recording.  He is the gentleman who taught me the correct way to solder electric wireing.  He came right back down on the same run but this time in my caboose.  We had a great conversation.  He left the shop he used to work at in downtown Geneva about 10 years ago and now works for the Catholic Church locally.  I mentioned to him how back a few years ago I put on line the way he taught me to solder and was told by several that I was completely wrong and that would give me cold solder joints and that I was an idiot.  Then how an older gent came in and said I was indeed correct and that was the way he learned to solder in the US Air Force in the Korean Conflict and you would never get a cold solder joint doing it that way.  It was taught in a class called Reliable Soldering!  The guy told me that was exactly where his dad (who owned a local TV Repair Shop) learned how to solder and his dad taught him!  He was very surprised to see me working train crew!

Then, yesterday a teacher who taught right across the hall when I was in the Middle School and became my best friend there showed up with his whole family. He is also a "train nut".  That proved to be a major scene of hugs from his now grown daughter (a student of mine) and his wife and back slaps all around!!!  I haven't seen them in years...  Turns out the gent who is in charge of the museum station operations and does all the ticket work prior to people boarding went to college (at RIT) with my friends daughter.  The boarding line got held up for a few minutes and of course the family (except for his son who bought a cab pass) climbed into my caboose for the train rides...  Major fun weekend out there!

Garry, good to see you are home and back in here.  Still keeping you in my thoughts for what you and your family have just been through...

Ahhhh.....  Just got an email from the museum publicilty guy with a link to a local news clip about the opening day of the museum.  You can see the Restored bus and old car #60 in being restored by us.  Car #60 is the last remaining subway car from the Rochester Subway.  Near the end of the clip there is a couple second clip of me standing next to the Erie Caboose C254 ready to welcome guests and a good shot of our freshly repainted and numbered RGV RR #54, our 80 Tonner which was doing the honors last weekend.  Enjoy!

Quiet here today, I guess the diner was closed for Fathers Day, or everyone was out enoying the nice weather.

Must go to Pottsylvania tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good week. Here comes Summer.

Everything was quiet over the weekend, most people were logged out by the new crappy website system and could not log-in again even though everything was all right.

When will IT Idiots ever learn to leave well enough alone!!!!!!

Must go to Pottsylvania tomorrow.

If that means Pottstown, a friend of mine runs a massage school there on High St.  Good place for a legitimate, discount (ie student) massage and the old bank across the street is a nice restaurant.  Not too far from Boyertown Auto Museum.  That part of PA was a hotbed of new car construction in the early 1900's

Hope everyone had a good Fathers Day.   Mine was chaotic as I was left out of the planning loop but ended up doing all the cooking.  Maryland Steamed Crabs for the cosmopolitan members here, are cooked with a spicy and peppery topping.  I'm not clear why we need hotdogs as well.

One son was intent on showing off his virtual reality system.  It required a lot of wiring, his desktop computer, setting up some sort of sensors 8' up in the air.  Once you get past the novelty of it, it wasn't that interesting, at least to me.

My son got me a NWSL chopper so I am happy.

Good Morning.... Wow. Nobody here....

What's that Chloe? No one after cudaken last night? Wow, 11 hours?

Guess I will just take a egg sandwich, and a OJ, to go then... Thanks.

If ATSFGUY drops by, the photos were from my small hometown in NW PA, so, those of you from the area, or who know me from elsewhere, know where that is, based on either photo backgrounds or your knowledge of me. The rest of you, well.....My hometown in NW PA, is answer good enough. (I do not share my exact location online.... Sorry. Just too small of a area to give that info out to everyone.)

Say hi to anyone who stops in, thanks Chloe.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer please and buy the folks around of what ever they want. Guess The Buick Guy Has A Flat Tire Again! Whistling

Work, well it was better than last Saturday. Which is not saying much. Made a extra $35.00.

Credit Front Boy my credit rating took a big hit and went from 741 to 636 which is fair. I knew it was going to happen with the 2 new credit cards. Used Credit Karma and Captioal One simulator so I was not shocked. Credit Karma said it would take about 3 months for the score to go back up. One of these days I like to get it back up to 850 like when I bought the house.

Train Front Looks like I have lost another Proto 1000 F unit. Sigh I have killed around 8 of them, not sure need to count them. I have ran them hard and a lot so I have nothing bad to say about them. With luck, it will just be a bad decoder. They are impossible for me to re-motor and I have tried. Problem is the chassis, it is bulit like a Armour Car. When I can get the worm gear covers off, I have never been able to get them re-installed?

Ulrich Soory to hear you are feeling bad still.

Good Afternoon,

Just dropping in to say hi to everybody. I am feeling miserable today, so what else is new? I hope to recover until Monday. We are invited out by our son for a day at the Hannover Zoo, including a nice lunch, and I don´t want to miss that. I have been looking forward to this since last Christmas!

No, nothing for me today, Zoe - I am sorry.

Today's work project--attaching a compressor-hose-reel to the wall in the garage. I am going to get started on it soon, before the temperature in the garage goes well north of 100 degrees. I need to run to the hardward store first to get the required carriage bolts.

I was out back from my ride by 7:00 this morning. Today's lesson: Riding up a 3% grade with a 15mph headwind--character-building; Riding DOWN a 3% grade with a 15mph TAILWIND--priceless.

Keeping with my penchant for wanting unusual or oddball items, I would like an apple pie milkshake. (Applesauce with cinnamon or apple pie spice, whatever's on hand and vanilla ice cream.)

When I see people grumbling about the "illegal" w-word, there are days that I want to really grumble about my job. However, I look at it this way: If I didn't have the job, I wouldn't have funds to enjoy my hobby.

Sir Madog: As I type this, it is thunderstorming outside. (With the open plains the storms seem to be fairly powerful. Not to the point of Tornado Alley, but we still get doosies every once in a while. Reference the tornado in Baker and that same day there was a cell that had strong winds and large hail. It just missed town proper but had small hail just east of town and the large hail was 2 miles north.) The standard forecast for my area for this time of year is 80s to 90s (F) with possibility of scattered thunderstorms.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, a Beer please.

Sort Of Work Front I should review book's for a living. Only 2 customers today in 9 hours! Sigh

Tin Can Dang you make me feel short and I don't often being 6'3". Far as Tom Cruise be Jack Reacher, what where they thinking? Have you read Make Me yet? I have around 100 pages to go. Other than that I have read all of the books. Have not read / heard the short story's. Seems I can only get them in a Audio Formatt. In my mind I know what Reacher sounds like (Not Tom Cruise) and don't want to ruin it. When they started the Peanut's Movies it sort of runied it for me for years. Then I got use to there voices over years.

Ulrich I really enjoyed the Tom Mays video and the one before it about the Train Sickness.

Well the heat as gotten to me, so later.

Good evening.  Flo, a tall glass of ice tea, please.  We had another very warm day but nothing like Arizona.  It is supposed to be in the 90's tomorrow.  Hope to get the mowing finished in the back yard fairly early in the afternoon as we have a funeral to attend in the morning for a good friend who lost her short battle with cancer.

Dennis, please be careful on the ladder.  Like I think I said last week I have pretty near givern up ladder climbing at 73.

Garry, glad you made it home safely.  Being gone for almost a month gets to be old unless you are some place you really enjoy.

I finished pouring my foundation wall and stripped one side of the form and backfilled the hole so no one wlll fall in it if they are snooping around the back of my house.

Layout wise, still spiking down track.  Haven't spent much time this week working on the layout.  I did finish off a Stephennie Plum novel this afternoon.  Enjoyable brainless reading for change as I have been on a history reading binge lately.

A couple of pictures of my foundation effort.  The pour was 16 50 lb bags of Quickrete mixed with a masonary hoe in a wheel barrow.  The forms worked well using pipe clamps to maintain the foundation thickness.  The first picture is the finished foundation and the bottom picture is the forms waiting to be poured.

Ken:  I love the Jack Reacher books.  I must say I wasn't thrilled when they cast short, little Tom Cruise in the movie role.  But then again, I'm 6'8", and sometimes, I might see Reacher as a younger version of me...

And you are making good progress on the yard; keep it up.

My wife texted me Wednesday that I am getting a pressure washer for Father's Day.  We are trying to clean mold/crud off of our brick facade on the house, and clean soffets/trim in preparation of a paint job.  The squirt bottle that hooked on the hose did absolutely no good.  She bought a 1700 psi electric washer; not what I would have bought; but in two days she has cleaned every square inch of the outside of the house.  And our concrete deck pad; and two nasty dogloos; and 4 plastic Adirondack chairs.  Paint was purchased last night; so I'll get to paint as my own Father's Day experience.

Howdy .

I'm fanally back home. I certainly have much to catch up on.

Here is an interesting vidoe. Perhaps some of you have seen it, but I recently saw it for the first time. It is about the Southern pacific train, The City of San Franciso, being strnaded for three days on Donner Pass in a 1952 blizzard.

Perhaps, Richard can watch it to cool off in Arizona.

Arizona summer temperatures are sort of like blood pressure, there is a high number and a low number, and it is a bummer when either of them get a little high. For the last few weeks, the high has been mostly over 100F but the lows have still been in the 70s. Next week that changes. Starting Sunday, the highs will be over 110 and the lows will only drop into the mid-80s. This means that by 7:00am we will be well into the 90s. This means it is no longer fun to get out early for a ride. Sad

It was a dark and stormy night. The wind howled, the rain poured, the hail clattered and the thunder and lightning were almost continuous. I was awakened, not by the storm, I would have slept through that, but I forgot to put my c-collar on before I went to bed. The CPAP machine dried out my mouth and I awoke searching for my bottle of Diet Pepsi, and then my c-collar which was on the floor by the foot of the bed.
My window was wide open, but I paid no heed to that, it seldom rains in that window what with being on the lower floor and with a great spruce tree obstructing the weather.  I lay in my bed and felt a very fine mist blowing in from the window. It felt good.
But it was the wind. It snapped many trees, and blew down many branches. The trunk of one great spruce snapped in two places as the top came on down. The wind also blew our two dumpsters across the parking lot. Now in the parking lot there were three SUVs and a van. Two of the SUVs belonged to visitors, both were Subarus, and both of these were from Colorado. They were parked Subaru, Chevy, Subaru, and Chevy. And the dumpsters flew across the parking lot striking the Subarus in the left rear window, shattering the window and causing some coach work issues with the one in the middle. But the other dumpster maid straight for the exposed Subaru on the West end of the line. It took out the passenger side rearview mirror fair and square. But perhaps it can be called a sacrificial mirror, as it took the hid and there was no coach work issues with this car.
One monk complained about the loss of the trees. The Business Manager was out inspecting Subarus and I, I was in the court yard, inhaling the fresh arboreal scented air and contemplating a swirl of yellowed spruce needles nestled in a perfectly round pattern.

Over 10 hours since the last post! Boy, this place is deserted! How can Cuz Vinnie and the girls make a living?

Good Afternoon!

Still no tornado, but we are just through a rather hefty thunderstorm, dumping 4 inches of ra*n within a few minutes, flooding the roads. It´s all gone now, but our weather sure has gone crazy lately. The odd weather will last a few more days, and there is little hope for a big improvement in the direction of a nice summer this year.

I went to see my doc this morning and he is not happy with my health. So am I.

We had "Spaghetti Carbonara" for lunch - for the first time. I had complained that our selection of meals we enjoy are basically not more than 10 different ones and was promptly awarded with the task of finding new recipes. When it comes to eating, I favor a German breakfast, Italian meals for lunch and English sandwiches for supper!

Today´s video shows some odd big boy´s toys!

Frry kid - Milk with mint ? Hmm may have to try that.

It was something that sounded good at one point and I went with it. I usually get it when I have a day off and I go to a coffee shop for breakfast. At the convention I mentioned in Fargo, I surprised the attendant at a coffee shop in the hotel with just a plain milk with flavor. She had never had anyone order that before.

It also could be done with any flavor that one happens to like.

Flo, Barry Buger Plater, what? The Buick Guy is hanging out here again? OK, I will pay is tab this time! Welcome back Douglas.

Work Sucked Rail Spikes Good new's is I have a new Jack Reacher book to read. Lee Childs book are all wise good read's and time past quickly.

Train Front Like most of you, I enjoy a slower moving train. But I noticed the wheels seem to get dirter quicker. I have found that if you run them faster the wheels seem to clean them self. Now I am not talking about with them moving faster the lights don't flash as much from the dirt wheels. After I slow them down after lets say a half hour there lights don't flash from dirty wheels?

Douglas Good looking GN. If you start hanging around more, I could use computer help.

 Lates Yard Photo.

While the rear fence still looks bad, it sure is better than it was! Boards where not evenly spaced to start with with the woven pattern they where. So that part is not my fault. Little by little I will replace all the boards.

YGW Would useing a water proof sealent applied first then paint protect the wood better than just paint?

Evenin Folks!

Janie, I could use a nice tall glass of iced tea with lemon right now....  Thank you Ma'am!

I see that A1c tests have been a topic of discussion this evening....  Mine has held at 5.8 - 5.9 for the last 5 years.  My doctor is very pleased with that, BTW.  The Mayo clinic says this explaining the signifigance of the readings:

"For someone who doesn't have diabetes, a normal A1C level is below 5.7 percent. Someone who's had uncontrolled diabetes for a long time might have an A1C level above 8 percent.

When the A1C test is used to diagnose diabetes, an A1C level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate occasions indicates you have diabetes. A result between 5.7 and 6.4 percent is considered prediabetes, which indicates a high risk of developing diabetes.

For most people who have previously diagnosed diabetes, an A1C level of 7 percent or less is a common treatment target. Higher targets of up to 8 percent may be appropriate for some individuals. If your A1C level is above your target, your doctor may recommend a change in your diabetes treatment plan. Remember, the higher your A1C level, the higher your risk of diabetes complications."

Ken, your question is covered in the above too.  You may have had uncontrolled diabettes for some time (hence your foot problem) and while it is in your best interest to get that number down if you can.  Your doctor may think that is basically normal for you now....  Having those nightly Beer Beer Beer can be a major no-no for someone with diabettes.  I have become a basic teetotaler over the past decade.  I may consume 3 or 4 in a year plus a couple glasses of wine during holidays.

Was out at the museum tonight for the monthly meeting.  We offered train rides to the membership and a few guests after the meeting.  We have a BBQ out there tomorrow evening and then Opening Weekend for the public.  Hopefully we will have a successful and safe season!!!

Have a great night!

Mr. B I think excercise should be banned like the word w**k. I hate exc****e. I know its supposed to be good for one. But....

I just don't think of it as exercise, but rather as an enjoyable way to spend some time, get some fresh air and sometimes make friends and have some pleasant conversation.  Bicycling is pure pleasure to me.  As for the "pumping iron" part in the gym, it gives me more strength and speed on the hockey rink, and improves my game.  When fall comes, I'll add a few leg exercises to condition myself for the different stresses of skiing.  Besides, a well-toned male body is more likely to attract a well-toned female body, also an interest of mine.

V8 - Geez I wonder how many ways we have to invent for us to self destruct ? And now they have something called "Spice" ?

Is this the same stuff they called "bath salts" a few years back?

Different thing.  Bath salts were misused products that got people high, while spice is fake weed that, unfortunately, has terrible side effects.

YGW -- The good news is, I'm huge (6-5 and now over 400 lbs after the dietician put me on a diet that increased my weight by 20+ lbs).  The bad news is, that means I'd be the target of said elephant gun!  I'd love to discuss firearms for personal defense in New York, but that would get us into politics inside of two sentences, so I'd better behave.

 Afternoon Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please.

Got the A/C Charged this morning. Best $19.00 I have spent this year! Yes I did said $19.00! Yes R134 cost Bob .06 cent a onces and charges $1.15 per once. I was half a pound low so it worked out to $19.00.

After that I did some running in a cool car and that helped a lot. Went to Lowes to shign the Fence Cotract but Mike was not there. I have a change I want to make. Bought some more lumber for the rear fence and came home.

Yard Wars Boy it was hot!!!!!!!!!!! It was 91 degrees when I started at 1:00 PM and was 95 by the time I said something I cannot post here. Drank 6 liters of water today and took a lot of brakes in the A/C garage. My monster pile of brush was picked up Tuesday and I bet thoses guy had some choises words when they saw it. Have new pile started and still away's to go. But I am getting closer.

Had hope to get the new rear fence board painted. But I got into the cutting and dragging part and it did not get done. But I did uncover some live Garp Vines, I will Nuke Then Wednesday before work. Nices thing about not having a dog that gets to run the rear yard, before I could not spary any thing to kill weeds, trees or vines!

YGW A1C shows the long term blood surgar leves. I think 8.0 is pretty bad. But my wife has a chart that say's it OK. Personally and I think Ray will agree that is way to high. I would like to get mine back down to 7.0 to 6.5 or lower.

To beat to type any more.

 Ken

My A1C  goes between 3-3.5, and my former doctor made me see a dietician, who told me I'm terribly diabetic and need to measure my sugar twice a day.  The doctors changed and the new doctor said my numbers aren't great, but it's nothing to really worry about, and that I don't have to see the dietician or stab my fingers twice a day.  So, bottom line, it depends on the doctor.

Hello Railfans!

ATSFGuy - yes, you are allowed to ask questions (even the one you asked). Otherwise, how would you ever find out whats allowed and what isnt? There are many here who are happy to provide information. Even MRR staff member Steve Otte avails himself now and then, as you see above.

Its a relaxed, comfortable environment where we share a bit more than just the hobby. A place where the hobby itself.... can relax. Yes again, you are allowed to ask in a Private Message sometyhing like a website url.

Yes also, you are correct about the NYC liveries. The 20th Century (more famous of the two trains) was two tone grey. The Empire Express was black and silver. In my personal opinion, i think the EE was the better looking train.

Website - As it happens I updated my profile a week or so ago to include my website and new email address. And everyone is invited to visit as long as you know the site is 90% unfinished.

This is strictly a Pere Marquette site though (or will be). You wont find my railfan pics or vids there like ive posted above. You will find the subsite where i am now hosting the videos for the HO scale working couplers.

(NOTE: I have removed the videos from Youtube. To see them you will have to go to my site)

Steve - you will never have to worry about me and advertising. I despise advertising! It is loatheful, tastless, shameful, and insulting to me. I wouldnt do that to anyone, especially Kalmbach. However, if you visit, and see something not allowed by MR, let me know and I will remove the link.

I made a mistake asking for the name of the website.  Sorry

Can I ask for the name in a private conversation with that person?

If not, I'll drop this topic and move on.

ATSFGuy - Due to forum rule "no mentioning of websites so as not to promote them", I cant print website name here.

Actually it's legal to include your personal website addy in your forum profile

"Within your forum profile, you’re allowed to share your own Web site and blog URL."  from Steve Otte's Forum Policies thread.

I also don't mind it when people put their personal websites in their signatures, as long as it's not a commercial site (not a store, paid attraction, or advertising-driven website) or in direct competition with Kalmbach.

And here in the Diner, I look the other way at a lot of other things. I've said before that it's OK to link to your website as long as it comes up naturally, and not in a promotional way. It's a lot less obtrusive to link to your railroad's homepage than it would be to repost 100 photos from the site here.
