April Fools
Posted by BroadwayLion on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 9:35 AM

The month of March is almost over, and It only occured to me that the beginning of March is when the April edition comes out. LION did not recall seeing the April Fools article, so him looked through the issue trying to find it, since nothing was mentioned of he here (that I recall).

Well, I did find it. It took a while, but eventually it grows on yew.

Yes, mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow.

Are you the Lion that March came in like?

Out here March came in like a lamb. Yesterday the LION ate the lamb. Him had rare sirloin of LAMB at the Blarney Stone in Bismarck.

It is also true that from mighty oaks, little acorns grow. So which came first the Acorn or the Oak.

I don't know why people still ask this question as it is always the accorn or egg or whatever.

Yes, this years April Fool's was not as, shall we say, obvious as those in the past.

Took me quite a few read thru's to find it.

April 1st in my least favorite day of the year...I'm not a fan of the Jokes and fail to understand why Model Railroader succumbs to this childish and grade-school type effort of comedy.  I would like to think MR is somewhat mature and above this, but apparently not.

You have to grow old, you do not have to grow up.

Without diving into whimsy daily life would become a grind, and being ground down like a peppercorn is nothing to sneeze at.

Serious is for the brain dead, levity is the salt of life.

Why do you think there are so many LIONS around here?

Wayne ... I'm surprised anybody would say what you said.

Think about George Burns who told funny jokes until he passed away at 100. Somebody that old is not a child, and his humor was not childish.

Have fun.

Since I haven't subscribed for many years, the only way I am aware of the April Fools feature is reading about it second hand on the MR forums, and that I only hear bits and pieces.  My local library carried it when I was in upstate NY but in 2009 I moved to Fairfax county.  The FF county libraries were horrible and had a terrible magazine selection; one of the richest counties in the country with the lowest unemployment at the time, and horrible magazine selection and of course, no MR.  A couple years ago I moved to Prince William county and hurray, great selection there and yes, MR magazine.  I guess I'll have to visit and find the new MR copy and, as my wife would say, see "what it's all aboot", what all the fuss is here.

I once had an April Fool's joke played on me that was devastating...it involved the supposed death of a close family member.  So I'm not a big fan of this day and still think it is childish and at times very hurtful. So no, I don't think April Fool's jokes are funny and I'm sorry if my comments offended anyone. But spend a few hours in grief thinking someone had died only to find out it was a "joke" and you might get a different perspective about April 1st.

Wayne ... I'm sad to hear your story. ... What you described might have been called a "joke", but that's not what is was. ... I hope you are okay now. .. Please understand when others are having fun with real jokes. ... Thanks for taking time to explain.

Wayne:

What was done to you was not a joke. It was a cruel, mean-spirited prank that inflicted pain, rather than bring enjoyment, as a joke should do. There is no way to justify the behavior of a person who would do such a thing.

It's a shame that it has soured your opinion, but I understand your reaction. I hope you can let down your guard in the future and enjoy the fun that April Fools can be, rather than the cruelty that an unfeeling person inflicted by perverting it.

We have our faults, but you're among friends here.

Thanks for the nice comments...I do my best with April 1st and don't get upset with those playing jokes, as most of the time it's just people having fun with harmless antics.

I am deeply offended.  Santa is my Uncle, my mother's big brother.  If I ever figure put photobucket I will demonstrate why I say this.

Welcome to the forum, fellow "Erie" fan!

I'm embarrassed to say that I was completely fooled by that "product review". It never dawned on me what month's issue I was reading. I just did not connect the dots. Guess I'm the "fool" that the day is all about.

I do have to say that i've seen that spoof before though . . . fool me twice!

I didn´t miss it, as it was just too obviously a hoax. I didn´t think it was funny - no offense meant, Neil, but there were much better April fools in the past.

I believe Kalmbach Customer Service can help you restore you original screen name. Or ask Steven Otte .
