 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please.

Work Front. Had a good day, it would have been a Great Day if I was working alone. Whistling Jerry was up tohis old tricks, trying to sale something that we don't have and are not made any longer. Bang Head Saved two of his sales so I got half.

Lion I know how you feel. I clean the desk / work station and junk just shows right back up?

Blow Out Good to see you back on line.

  I am beat, so later.

Welcome back to Barry... you got a tablet or a phone or something.

Credos of LION are on the 'puter, but I doubt if anyone here would stop in to let you know if something happened to me. Of course calling the Abbey would work. The forms on our web site come to me, so those might knot get answered.

LION went up to the train room. Plan of him was to clean the work bench. Him did some of that, but olny a discerning pack rat would notice the difference. My eye fixed on the subway train of him, and with a push of a button... the train is running.

This is one of the ones I just upgraded with a gnu motor. Works perfectly, except... some of the drawbars need work as there is some binding on the tighter curves. Easy to fix.

LION must go down to the metal shop and see if him can find some suitable material to fabricate some new drawbars with.

The Barry-Audrey posts got me thinking. It would be great it all of the regulars would make sure there is a significant other who has the knowledge and credentials necessary to update the others if something were to happen. This would reduce the consternation when someone goes missing due to health problems.

Hello all! Great to see Todd with us once more – always fun to get Toddland updates. Thumbs Up Tea please black, and some real Scottish shortbread with that.  Had great plans for cutting up ply and chipboard for  the platforms under the layout  - but  the weather is decidedly dodgy and since the table saw is in the garage and the door is best left open, I think not. Besides, 1) I haven’t finalized all the measurements and 2) both of the chipboard pieces are stored screwed to the garage walls so have to be dismounted, and 3) to do THAT means clearing off all the stuff on the benches in front of those walls…a nicer day is called for.

Henry:
I would have it do a scan at boot up, sorry I don't remember how that is done in AVG.
http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/scan-on-boot-405972/  suggests it can’t be done that way… Maybe Chris knows how…

Tucson Bob:
I'm slowly trying to make it a more SW look. One idea was to try and model the Magma Arizona RR which ran between the mining town of Superior and the interchange w/ SP south of Phoenix. Not sure where the trolleys will fit in, but I like 'em anyway.
I put a trolley “out and back” line – literally one strip of HO flex – on top of a flatish hill with houses on it at one end of a layout I had in the 1980s. No photos to show – the two I have of the hill don’t show the trolley line! The out and back circuit was from a Klambach Electronics project book now probably out of print.

not sure of copyright issues on this so here’s a link to an auto-roar! LOL  http://giphy.com/gifs/movie-classic-OxDFBxboYnDO0  That will keep going until you get back. Have a good trip.

Ulrich:  That latest layout video is a charm! – and as to the Russian narrow gauge one – I’m emailing the URL to an ex-army engineer mmr friend of mine – should make his day. There’s hope for us sloppy modelers yet (not that my friend is one)!

Ulrich- The layout looks fascinating! Where's the back drop. That video reminds me of the Penn Central video in the 1970s.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the Breakfast Buffett this morning.  Just bring me a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee for my R&GV RR Mug.

Currently 52°F outside under "partly Cloudy" (The sun has been shining all morning here but they say it should clear up this afternoon....  Really!) skies.  Little wheel attached to the inverter down cellar is spinning wery nicely this morning.  I have to get photos for publication of all the art work from the MLK Art and Poetry Contest done this afternoon as I want to get it all back to the schools tomorrow.... All I have is the winners in each catagory and once started, it will take me about an hour of time to get done.  I may have tyo run over to the hardware stare for more making tape to hold the entries on the wall I use as the background first though.

MrMick two days ago as I was having breakfast, I looked out my kitchen window to find two Robins, one woodpecker, and 16 starlings trying to find food in my lawn.  (Mine is one of the few they can feed in and not get poisoned around here...)  Yep, Spring has officially arrived amongst the sn*w, sleet, cold temps., and ickyness of late February here in the Finger Lakes.  They arrived about 3 weeks earlier than normal.

MrB, have fun skiing! I used to do some Nordic skiing, but I am afraid those days are over now.  I'll be happy if I can get up to walking two miles by the end of March.  Should help me working on train this summer.

Back to w*rk!  Catch you later!

Good morning!

First off - don't worry about me!  I'm telling you right here and now that I'll be going skiing later today, and will be off the grid until late Friday.

Thanks to The Lion!  It appears that I've got a bad motor in a subway car.  I started a thread about it in Electronics and DCC, and Brother Elias replied with the part number I need to order from NWSL to replace the motor.  A ROAR of approval, please!

While I'm gone, everyone get well and nobody else get sick, OK?

Good Morning, Diners! Flo, a cuppa coffee with cream and a doughnut, please

Good to hear the Barry is doing better; thanks for the good news, Audrey.

The Decoder expert sent me back the decoder, said it was OK.  I finally finished installing it - soldered the wires, used the shrink wrap, an all - and when push came to shove- I put it on the track and Lo! Movement...Lights...and Sound! I was pretty happy. First time I have installed a sound deocer.

Ulrich, great progress on your layout, I wsh i could say the same, but I will get there eventually.

Yesterday we saw some Blubirds out at the feeder, so Spring can't be far behind.

Best to all

Good Afternoon, Folks!

Yoohoo! Anybody here? This place looks deserted!

It´s a nice day - lots of sunshine, a bit cold, though. I went for a nice walk, so very little wass done on the layout. I took the time to make a new video and here it is:

Zoe, just a coffee and a pretzel, please! I´ll stay in the corner booth, waiting for some company.

Hello

Barry seems to be doing better tonight. Maybe he will be well enough to come here.

Again, thanks for the good vibes and prayers. Audrey

Ken:...I mentioned your comment to him and he said it felt like it was both!!

Audrey ... Thanks for keeping us informed. Prayers continue. Looking forward to hearing from him when he feels up to it.

I will have an appointment with my cardiologist Monday. Everything seems to be under control, and I doubt he will have any bad news for me.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please

What A Day! I feel like I have been beating like a Mule! It was a great day outside, felt like it was around 70 and not a cloud in the sky. I was sure we where going to be slow. Not! Started out slow, then around 1:30 the dam broke! I am not sure how many people really came in, we claimed 19 but more than likely 25. There was no way I could keep count.

Jerry is slow and was not much help. I handled twices the number of customers and had 4 times the sales. If we had some one as half as good as my self, we would have had $5000.00 in sale. I had $2800.00 and Jerry had $650.00. Whistling

Train Front Before we got busy I got one idea done for the new layout bench. I hope to post it here in the next few days. It will have a lift out section on wheel about 10 foot long. Next one will have a duck under so I can get to the Road Runner.

YGW I was going to call you today but we got busy. Coal Cars are still being made and at the Accurail site they are $17.95 each I believe.

Gary Which SD engine as two ladders, 7 or 9?

AVG Yes it did it's job! Yes It was Jeffery that told me about AVG.

Berry Hope to see you in the dinner soon! Was it a burnt Intake or Exhaust Valve? (Car joke folks, Berry is a old Drag Racer like me)

BBQ is done Dinner and so am I.

Hello all

Thanks for the kind welcome.

Ulrich - two of the trolleys I have are Modemo. They are really nice little runners. The layout I got from my friend was supposedly modelled for Salt Lake. I'm slowly trying to make it a more SW look. One idea was to try and model the Magma Arizona RR which ran between the mining town of Superior and the interchange w/ SP south of Phoenix. Not sure where the trolleys will fit in, but I like 'em anyway.

I managed to get an old Trix 0-6-0 running fairly well last night. Think I'll try and run that as a second train on the layout when I get home next week.

That´s why my layout rests on a table with casters. It is really handy to move the layout around with no effort at all.

This is how it all got started!

Good sunny-if-cool Afternoon Diners: Black tea would be fine about now, thanks Chloe…and some dark chocolate biscuits if there are any left…

Der - the cake eater was cute.
From the archive of such Bd. related stuff in my Photobucket account. Years ago there was a chap from Holland in the old Coffee Shop who was the “King of .gifs” so to speak. When he dropped out, I kinda carried on his legacy.
Don't understand the plan for the stuff underneath.
Imagine a platform raised about 3 or 4 inches above the floor under each of the sections of that “L”. The drawer sets will sit on the platforms and so not get in the way when the sections which are on casters, are moved around. Such movements would be to aid layout construction, and possibly maintenance. Now I’ve played about a bit in the SCARM program with the pieces of ply etc. I have available to me, I know that there will be only two pieces to form the platform for the first section. A view from the underside would be
Shame you don't live closer. Today I gave a local pastor a trailer full material and I filled up the back of his truck with tile, exterior trim and the back seat with tile grout. It was either donate it or pay to throw it away.
Thanks for the thought, and that was kind of you. Yesterday I drove very carefully home from the local hardware store with 5 sheets of 2x8 one inch rigid foam insulation on the car roof racks. Not rigid enough , or slowly enough, as the top 3 broke in the wind, and I’m short 2x 1/3rd sheets! Bang Head I should have taken a length of plywood to put on top of the load. Coulda, woulda, shoulda – we get to soon old and too late smart!
Come down this way bring your trailer.
Thanks, but I’d have to buy a trailer – and then there’s Canada Customs on the return trip….! Laugh
Der how is your week been
Very good really – but I share the retired geezer syndrome of the days shmushing into one another!  Happy the layout’s becoming a reality, even if visible progress may be a matter of fits and starts. I’ve got back into the habit of walking – a friend in his 80s does so at the local arena, and I accompany him on his first lap – then take off to do my other 14 which makes 2 miles. He’s done his 4 by the time I’m through. The laps are so similar that I keep count by switching candies from one coat pocket to the other as I pass GO. Wouldn’t it be nice to collect the $200 each time around!

Ulrich: Your layout is looking wonderful.
Henry - my favorite line is the former Furka Oberalpbahn (FO), a narrow gauge railroad from Brig to Disentis.
I have similar feelings for the Romney, Hythe and Dimchurch railway in Kent, England. This is 1/3rd scale live steam. 15” gauge. However I can just vicariously experience your “engineer’s view” ride! http://www.rhdr.org.uk/

Ray, keep going with the exercise.  That's been the key for my improving health with the Type 2 diabetes.  I started out walking a mile or so, but once the nice weather came along last year, I ended up doing 2 hours on a typical bike-ride day.  I do 2 miles on the treadmill in the gym now, waiting for summer, my pastures to change.  I set it to 3.6 miles an hour, a brisk pace.  I want to get it over with because treadmills are dreadfully boring.

Mornin'....  Well, it was when I got home from the fieldhouse!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buckwheat pancakes and real NYS Maple syrup, a couple sausage links, and a large pot of Café Justo dark roast coffee for my R&GV RR mug please and thank you!

Yep, done went over and got my mile of walking in...  Seems to be getting easier to do each time so next week I shall add another lap to it.  Ran into some old friends today.  One is a High School Guidance councilor and professional musician locally.  His daughter was the red head that gave me a big hug a week ago over there.  I found out his daughter is finishing her Doctorate at the college!  He told me just to keep moving and don't worry about how fast I get it done...  He also said just put all life's stresses out of your mind while walking (I told him about some crap I have been dealing with).  So I said that is easy to do and that I like to notice the scenery at the fieldhouse.  He grinned, nodded his head, and said, Uh-huh!!!  I also got to chat for a couple minutes with an old music teacher colleague of mine (we taught music together for several years at the middle school).  He had just finished 50 laps running!!  50 laps!  That is about 9 miles...  He is training for a mini-marrathon this Spring!  He is 70 years old!

When I left to go to the fieldhouse it was cloudy here in the Finger Lakes Region.  Sky is clearing and the sun has now made an appearance!  33°F outside on its way up to 42°F this afternoon.

Todd,  good to see you!  I do love your posts...  Get yourself out and find some waitresses to flirt with. Whistling  I would hate to see the consequences pf eating too many "Horseshoes"...  Your method of dishwashing wouldn't work around here.  The kitties are too fussy about what they want to eat....  I remember reading that your method works very nicely to get guests to go home after they have overstayed their welcome........

Oh... Audrey!  Thanks for the update on Barry.  Please tell him we are all keeping him in our thoughts and/or prayers...

OK, have a lot of "must get done yesterday" stuff to do...  Have a great one!

Good morning!  I didn't sleep well last night.  I took a couple of antihistimines for my cold.  I felt like they might have been the "non-drowsy" kind, but I couldn't find that on the package.

Ken, I've got the AVG free edition.  It sounds to me like it did its job for you.  I have mine set up to run every night at about 1 AM so it doesn't interfere with whatever I might be doing.  AVG has an active component, too, that will generally watch certain things that nefarious hackers will try to do when you visit their pages.

I'm trying to get my other subway train running.  One is fine, but the other one seemed to have a broken decoder.  I had been putting off the task because it's an old Digitrax DH123 that's wired in, and I just didn't feel like soldering.  When I opened up the new decoder and looked closely at both it (a DH126) I found that both actually have plugs at the decoder end, so it was a simple unplug and plug job.  It seemed fine, but after a minute or two the engine wouldn't move and it would sometimes short.  It's time to make a far more intrusive search for the problem.  I'm thinking I may have a piece of wire stuck in the motor.

Gooooood Morning!!!

Cup of hot tea please, thanks. (cough, cough, gack) Whew! What is this? Earl who? English tea? Oh, well I guess I have been gone awhile. I prefer green tea thank you. Whoa, no wonder they put cream in the stuff.

Wow! Where did February go?!

Just stopped in to say I’m still alive and kickin’. Sorta. HmmOlder I get the less I kick. I think I’ll let my hair grow long again. I noticed that my ear hairs grow pretty doggon fast anymore. I’m rooting around in my ears about every three days it seems. Ah the joys of growing old.

No issues with the Chinese lately. Don't really go to buffet much, just carryout from a couple places. Besides, most of the girls have moved on and been replaced by guys. Wife doesn’t have problems with me being nice to guys. But then again, none of the guys have sabotaged her dinner eitherWhistling.

Big SmileGood news on the Toddland (of which I’m king) front, got the drywall and have 4 count ‘em 4 pieces installed.Yes Two more to go. Hopefully I’ll get them up this weekend along with finishing (the part I hate) the portion where my reloading bench sits. Then I’ll push that back, put up a new section making it an “L”, then add some shelving once that measurement is in stone, and hopefully finish (did I mention I hate finishing drywall) the rest after that is up. THEN I can start to put AAAAAAALLL the shhhhtuff that is piled in the middle of the floor up, then I can get to my modelling bench and hopefully, my layout and do some cleaning on it then get a train roaming around. Then I can get back to the hobby I really do missSigh. The room is in such a disaster, it takes forever to do anything due to having to shift shtuff around to do something, then when that is done, shift shtuff around to do the next piece. If Ulrich did to his room just half of what I’ve done to this one, he’d be over hear in the States by now. Petra would kick him so hard he’d fly right over.

Welp, othern the usual day to day stuff I get involved in, that’s the update on me.

What ho?! New menu items from our localness? Well allow me to add the HorseshoeDinner. What is that you ask, well pretty much only those in Central Illinoyz know what it is. It’s two pieces of toast and two hamburger patties (or other meat as desired, but traditionally it’s hamburger) placed on each piece of toast. Cover that with french fries, then cover that with cheese sauce. Many places make their own cheese sauce and claim it to be the best, and I tell you what, there are as many cheese sauces as there are chili’s. Me, I prefer a Welsh Rarebit. If that seems a bit large, you can get one piece of toast and one piece of meat with less fries, and they call it a Ponyshoe. Imagine that. Very common here, and very popular.

Washing dishes? I have the same type dishwasher as Herrinchoker. Mine’s the Labrador model. Washes and rinses at the same time.

Welp, gotta get movin, can’t read the whole month so I just browsed. Hopefully I will be in more so it’s easier to stay caught up.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Audrey thanks for letting us know about Barry, say hi for all of us.

Ken ...Never had that happen, though I have had warnings of unsafe websites or something trying to install a program.  Anti-virus programs aren't always 100%.  Also they don't automatically schedule a scan unless you tell them to.

I would have it do a scan at boot up, sorry I don't remember how that is done in AVG.

 Morning Dinners

 Flo, Coffee Please

Last night while I was posting here in the dinner Iwas looking up a word that I could not spell. My computer was attacked and a bunch of Red Flags Poped Up! AVG shut down the computer (very had that happen before) and restarted it. Seems to be fine now.

Train Front Been playing with some layout designs to see what I can fit in the garage with my 68 Road Runner. While it is tight, there is room for both.

YGW Hope next week is better! On the N&W coal cars, only 1 or 2 of the kits are built, guess that was why some where priced more than the others.

Here is the link to the cars.

Good Afternoon!

Boy, do I need a rest! Janie, coffee in an IV bag and something sweet to chew on, please. Apple pie, topped with vanilla ice cream and rum raisins? Sounds great!

Bob - welcome back! So you have no entered the world of model railroding in the iNsane scale! Trolleys? Kato, Tomix and Modemo have quite a lot of schtuff for that. Arnold, which is now Hornby´s N scale brand, also has a streetcar available. I bet transit modeling will catch on!

I feel knackered! In the morning I had to go to our post office to return the sound module, which just does not want to work. I hope the replacement will do its job! Saturday seems to be the day when the ladies return all those dresses and shoes they ordered that one size to small, so there was a huge queue. Took me an hour to post my little parcel.

Back home, the battle of the foam started ad, at first, it appeared to be an easy win for the foam.In the end I won and I am now not at all sad to announce that there is no more pink foam visible on my layout (give or take one or two spots requiring some touch-up)!

Another little step done!

Lion - lovely picture!

Hello all

It's been a while since I've been in the diner. Glad to see it's been named in honor of Jeffrey. I miss him.

Got involved in N-gauge a while back and then decided it was too small and stuck w/ O-gauge. Then I started volunteering w/ the local historical trolley/bus group and found an N-gauge trolley that is the spitting image of one of ours on the bay. So I got another N-gauge loop of Kato track to run it. Then a guy I volunteer w/ offers me his 3 X 9' layout. I decided to think about it. In the meantime he gives me a bunch of old rolling stock. One night I'm sitting at the kitchen table messing around w/ it and I realize there is more stuff sitting on the table than all the O-scale stuff I have. I was hooked. Well, that layout now dominates the living room of where I live. I ended up trading off a lot of my O-gauge for some older N stuff and here I am again.

Glad to hear BOC did well w/ his surgery.

adjective: 1. Relating to wings; wing-shaped. 2. Relating to the armpit.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin ala (wing), which also gave us aisle and aileron. Earliest documented use: 1791.
