Flo, I'll have a beer and some pretzels.

Thanks Ray for the help - Your hints worked like a charm. After Train Night this week, I will try to post a picture of part of the Marklin layout, and try to explain why someone today would still use Marklin trains, although I think that the answer will be obvious. I have to admit that when I was first invited to participate running these trains, i was quite hesitant.

No news form the Experts on the decoder I sent them;  No News=Good News? I hope so!

Thanks to all others who chipiped in withtheir tips andhelp onposting Photos - It's what makes the Diner such an inviting place to confab.

Thisis a test.   These are the tunnel portals that I weathered, using a grey wash ( acrylic paint) and black pastel chalk) for the "smoke residue", all sealed with WS Sceninc Cement ( using a spray bottle)

Barry .... Since you are a moderator, do you have any idea how a post I started in the MR Forum ws moved to the Trains Forum?

Probably the same way I got bombarded by Astronomy Magazine's emails, published by, guess who.  The option to unsubscribe sends me to a page were I can unsubscribe all the railroad related newletters but not Astronomy, whose customer support says "We can't find your account"

Slow burn are the only words I can post here. The experience seems to have impaired my ability to think in words longer than four letters.

Der, I haven't been around long enough to catch your name.

Galaxy, your silence in not reassuring, but you have friends here.

Ulrich ... I like the red FO locomotive. I suppse when you complete your layout, FO Means "Finally Operating". Whistling

Good Late Afternoon Diners!
6660:
I decided to pick a pre drawn track plan, I believe it was called the Aberdeen and Rockfish. http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/11/t/115287.aspx the second track plan on top.
Interesting, and IIRC, the poster – P. Carrell is one of our MIAs – from some time ago. Good to see he’s still active in mmr. Use to w*rk for a phone company – I wonder if he still does…

Up831:
Der:  just a thought on you track plan.  At the corner of the "L" if you put a hill or some view blocker there, when the trains come around the curve they would make an "entrance" as it were, and proceed down that straight track through the yard.
– Hmm…well that gave me the back half of the afternoon at the computer! You’re right, and a suitably tunneled land mass provides just the entrance, as well as hiding the return loop effectively. The SCARM program’s fine tuning isn’t great so in automatically smoothing things out, it has half buried my industry! Also, the flat plateau is meant to higher in stages like the mountain in the corner; but try as I might I can’t convince it to do that.  I spent much of the time however seeing if my interchange track would work better up in that area. All in all, while it might, the direction reversal is probably more important to me. Here’s the new look.
And for completeness sake, the different interchange, sans reverse loop
a question for everyone.  If I want to add an avatar, what is the procedure?  What are the parameters?  Do I need to make like a thumbnail or what?
Avatar – Look att  he top right of this page and you’ll see underneath the green block saying Welcome (your name) an second field with a number of possible selections in two columns. The last on the left hand side is “Change Avatar”  Click on that and it will walk you through. No special sizing required, the Forum software does it all.

CN Charlie:

Der, What's wrong with Newcastle Brown? I used to like it but then again I haven't had any for quite some time. I'm not much of a beer drinker but prefer the darker stuff. Keith's IPA isn't bad though.
Well you had to go and ask! Long story short, after the farewell party we gave our close friend in 1966(as in Best Man at our wedding) as he prepared to emigrate to Canada, I had not a few Newcastle Brown Ales. As a result I was sick as a dog and swore off that brew permanently!

Henry:

Der you need to decide if it's color or colour.
For me it is and always will be colour – but if the code takes colour I’d be very surprised. Does it? Is that where I’m messing up?
Brother Lion sorry you have joined the sick bay crowd.  There are too many of us there.
I agree, there are – but in this case I think you’ll find Bro Elias, as infirmerer, was accompanying a patient to the doctor’s.

Dennis:
A old long ordinate freeway bridge over another freeway is being demolished in downtown LA. They say the concrete has weakened, sounds like baloney to me. So the freeway below is closed for a couple of days causing massive traffic jams, actually they did a lot of planning and warning to mitigate this as much as possible.
Saw your mayor telling everyone “The 101 will be open by such-and-such a time” That was before the weekend, I think, or maybe Saturday. Was that the highway in question? Trash blown all over? Is that the black bags acting like tumble weed? Yikes!

Ray:
Brother Elias, I don't know...  Those Wild Horses can have a lethal kick I hear...
Watched the last half of the final quarter. At that time the 5 point Favourites were down 7- 14 IIRC.  We find that the best of the best in sports is usually in the closing minutes of these championship games. The Stanley cup being a case in point. Not sports fans here – but when the chips are really down, the teams generally get serious and play amazingly. …and Johnboy’s heart would not have been disappointed by Mr. Manning! My 2 Cents

Ulrich:
I am worried about Galaxy! I assume they took him back into the hospital which he shouldn´t have left at all before being all well!
– I think you are right. We’ll hear from him as soon as he’s able. In the mean time Angel  Another  entertaining video, thanks. Kris and I were laughing at your choice of score, very apt – but I was somehow expecting to see a damsel in distress tied to the tracks as the music crescendoed!
there were lots of barren properties with weeds growing
…same in the UK as I recall. Known as “Bomb sites” and undeveloped for years. Passed not a few on my walk to the old location of the National College of Food Technology from the Tube in 1959.

Chris:
It took me months to design that PRR logo - but it looks good to me ;-)
– Looks good to me too!” All symbology appearing in this work is fictitious. Any resemblance to real logos, living or dead, is purely coincidental.” LOL Thinking about your “Do you meet each other?” question – there was another chap,  Teffy from Texas, who made a Grand Tour a few years back, and came to the Maritimes. He handed out plaques for hanging in our train rooms to the effect of where those who disapproved of the way we ran our empires could take their opinions! IIRC, he got lost on his way back to Halifax from our place – but not disastrously.  Thanks for the code – I’ll hazard that to see how it goes. I’ve saved the image for later.
I need a decaf and an order of  flapjacks - too early for flapjacks?
IIRC Flapjacks in the UK were something quite different from what they call pancakes in NA. At least, what my mother called Flapjack were – thick oatmealy things, substantial and I liked them.

Terry: Welcome back! I’ve been AWOL myself for quite some time.

Ken:
Still a good looking engine and for $35.00 what the heck!
and being an RS2, it’s shorter, isn’t it than the F Unit would be. So, easier to get into those stub spurs!

John:
and a lamington please
Lamingtons…seems they were on the menu 3 years ago – had to check your whereabouts – and I can now see why you’d favour them.  Don’t mind if I get some for myself…

Jim:
Der, was that Uncle Guido in the trench coat under Vinnie's picture?
My lips are of course, sealed Smile, Wink & Grin

Train Front: Cut the 18” door to give me my 10” and 3” sections. Ripped a 1x3 for the two strips to seal the open edges – cleaned the garage floor first, and put down a tarp so as to save the clean sawdust for later use in the scenery.  So, it has begun. Today I brought all the first batch of lumber, the doors and sections, a variety of tools and the bucket of screws down to the basement to acclimatize. Next job is to cut away the cardboard filling in the open edges of the door sections, clean that up and glue and finishing nail (I’ll use the small ones I also use for track laying ) the strips to fill the gaps.  Kris saw me still typing this and asked if anyone ever got any actual modeling done!  So, if I’m not in for a while, you’ll know what’s up with that!

Ulrich, nice looking electric. Marklin? The couplers look compatible...

Mr. Mick

-Still trying to post a photo-

Not Marklin, but Bemo - a small German manufacturer (!) of German and Swiss narrow gauge locos and cars. Quite pricey, but there is lots to be found on Ebay and, with a little luck, even for a bargain. The above loco was 70% off the MSRP!

The loco runs on 12mm track, representing metre-gauge.

As the saw didn´t even come today, I used the time to give my other FO loco an overhaul and replace the broken of detail parts.

Here she is, looking younger than ever:

DSC_0334_zps9sbx2l33.jpg

Jim - I have no idea where that picture comes from - I didn´t see it in the video. Actually, I was born in Düsseldorf, not Essen, but the cities looked very much alike in those years. While all of the WW II rubble was long gone in 1956, there were lots of barren properties with weeds growing tree high (no, not those kind of weeds Whistling). I did not have to share a bed with my older sister and brother, but the three of us shared one room. As an Assistant DA, my Dad´s salary was not as high as a skilled factory worker´s wage, but fortunately that changed drastically over the years. Meager, but happy days!

Good afternoon, diners.  It is cool and rainy this morning in SE Ohio.  Still stuffed from the Superbowl feast we had a friend's yesterday.

Track laying came to a halt over the weekend when I realized my plans were not going to work out,  I was trying to closely stack three turnouts to make a small yard but the geometry I was trying to achieve was not going to work out.  Now I have a big pile of turnout ties and regular ties that need to have the glue, paint and drywall compound cleaned off.  I am going to try a little more sophisticated attempt at laying out the yard entrance.  Printed off a bunch of track layout templates for curved turnouts and will now get out the sissors and do a cut and paste mock up of the yard entrance.  This is a learning experience for sure.

Hope Galaxy is okay.

Uhlrich, I don't believe I have ever seen the picture of the women and children in color used as the cover for your life in Essen in the early 50's.

Der, was that Uncle Guido in the trench coat under Vinnie's picture?

Have a great day.

Garry things are beginning to settle after last years trials and tribulations. Today we had rain first thing but it is dry and quite sunny first time in nearly 3 months.

Chris It's great to find a few people who understand us Brits it can be a bit confusing at times but I am making progress, but I still have trouble with a few American expressions!

Ulrich I can feel your frustration it is annoying when you are promised something then they fail to deliver!

Health and happiness to all who visit "the diner"

Mornin'....

Zoe, just a small bowl of Heritage Flakes Organic Cereal with skim milk and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast coffee this morning...  Morning Blood sugar was way too high (171).  Must have overdone big time last night at the Bowl Game watching and dinner before that.

I have a dentist appointment early this afternoon and hope to get in a walk at the fieldhouse before then...  I will be spending part of the afternoon trying to get caught up with items needing my attention from the NMRA Division (like where and when the next (Spring) Meet will be!).

So.....  What happened to Galaxy?  Keeping him in my prayers for the moment!

Have a great day out there...

John Busby ... Nice to see you here in the Diner.

Ulrich ... Maybe it will arrive tomorrow.

Mr. B ... The company houses project sounds like a good indoor activity during a winter day.

I continue to be concerned about Galaxy

On my model railroad, I continue working on track.

Sir Madog

Guess what was not in the mail today! Sad

Well, that's too bad.  It's nice to get a new toy to play with, particularly when the weather is bad and you don't feel like even going outside.

That will be our situation today.  We will be getting 3-6 inches of snow.  This should be light snow, though, and probably won't bother our power any like the last one.

I was happy to see Peyton Manning get another Superbowl ring.  He's always been a classy player and a hard worker.  If that was to be his last game, and most of us think it was, he deserved to go out on top.

As for me, I think I'll work on those company houses again.  I've got to paint the chimneys and glue them to the roofs, and then solder some wires together for the interior and porch lights.

Galaxy?  Where are you?

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Hi Sir Madog

Looking at history can be interesting sometimes how things have changed just in ones own life time can be pretty amazing.

Why is it when we look back Bad bit's included it was allway's better back then even if things clearly where not, what is it about the past that has us trapped so to speak in the so called better world of the past.

My concernes are a bit more here and now heard from the surgeons the other day

Things are at last moving on the last phase of fixing my eyes.

When thats done complete my 4'6" square empire

Then on to the NOT The San Juan Central even though its got the same track plan well all most and its a smaller gauge by a whole 1mm and will be a lot greener.

Must get on to Puffing Billy and see if they have a drawing of Monbulk Creek trestle

Oh waiter! a flat white and a lamington please

regards John

Good Morning!

Today is the heyday of this year´s Carnival season in Germany, usually celebrated with big parades in the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz and numerous other towns and cities. But there won´t be any parades today - they have been cancelled due to a bad storm expected to hit. It´s more of a political than a real storm...

I found an interesting video on life in Germany in the early 1950´s . Watching it brought back many a fond, but also not fond memory of my childhood days.

A pretty good description of how life was in those days!  Things have changed dramatically since then. The lack of cars in the 1950´s is intriguing! In 1956, my year of birth, we had a little over 2.1 million cars in Germany or 1 car for 215 people now the figure reads 42 million or 1 car for 1.8 people - what a change!

Well, today my saw should be arriving, so that puts and an to the dust truce!

Have a good one!

Evenin' folks!

Chloe, a refil of my decaf would be great!

Hey, hey, hey!!!  Denver all the way!  I'm really not a football fan but I did enjoy watching the first half of the stupor bowl tonight.  And I am really happy that Peyton Manning gets to finish up a long career with a win like this.  Denver's defence has been their strong point all season (according to my son who keeps track of such things) and what I saw tonight certainly showed that.  Sorry Lion but those Bronco's came out kicking...

Had a nice dinner with the family at a local Italian Restaurant over in Waterloo and then came back to the house for the Birthday Cake and Ice Cream about the time the game started.  I managed to drive to Waterloo and then to my son's house on EV only, charged while I was there and made it home on EV...  I am getting 100mpg on this tank so far.  Have driven 400 miles on about 4 gallons of Dinasaur Dung.  The solar panels on the roof kicked out 13.25 kWh today, the best so far this year, so I am happy at the moment.

Hope you all have a great night.  Stay safe and warm!

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer please and give Henry one as well.

I am done helping Jerry for free! For the last 3 months I have been pretty much helping and not getting my name on the ticket. (means I get half of the commission) In this kind of sales, if you have to ask for help from the other salesperson (In my case manager) it becomes a split deal. I had to help him again today (saved two deals for him Saturday) and I wanted my name on the ticket.

He explained that "With you being the manager it is your job to help me!" I explained to him in this bussines being the manager pretty much means all I do is order over the inventory. I make the same per hour as him, same commission rate and there is no over ride (% of his sales) of his sales. Did not go into the fact that I now make $500.00 less a month because I lost all of the overtime I was making!

Going to talk with Paul Monday about this caboose. If I have to save one of his deals either by closing the deal or fixing a derailment (Thursday he sold 3 box spring, that we only had 1 of) I want half the ticket!

der5997
Ken: Glad your RS2 ran sweetly. 17 cars and not a cough – very nice!

Der Yep a good little engine, but little is the keyword. OK, about the sizes of my GP 7 but is lite weight. After all RS stands for Road Switcher, kind of forgot that till today. Found it limit's last night, it is not going to drag 20 50 foot hoppers. A Proto 1000 F-3 would make short work on that many. Still a good looking engine and for $35.00 what the heck!

BBQ is done and so am I

 Galaxy, please check in soon.

My father took me to Superbowl III in 1969.

Namath kicked our butts.  I'm certain our tickets didn't cost $5000.  We went to the airport after the game and had dinner waiting for our flight out.  Howard Cosell, Dandy Don and Frank Griffith? were next to us.  They had been to the bar before that or maybe their limo had a bar.

Flo, I woud like a cup of coffee, black, please.

I thought that I would take a break - we be getting ready for some folks to come over to watch the game  today.   I been working on  today's Honey-Do list, which was a little longer than the usual, but we're in good shape now.

Galaxy has been missing since the third...I too hope that he is ok, he' has had a rough spell of late, with his buddy Train Nut and some physical things that have cropped up - also hoping that things ar OK with him and family, hoping that he's been taken care off.

Still can't get to post a photo of those Tunnel Portals that I worked on, but still trying, too.  I appreciate all the hints sand suggestions, and if you see a large red cloth going by, that would be the towel I throwed in. Not ready too, yet.  I would also like to post a pic or two of the Marklin layout that I am privileged to work on with maybe  some elaboration on the history-which Ulrich was pretty close to guessing on in his post.

Gotta help Barbara with  the Chicken Wings...wow, that was a pretty strong coffee, maybe next time I'll get it with some cream!

an 'Welcome Aboard', Chris.

der5997,

Thanks for that explanation of "the diner" and photos of our waitresses. Still trying to take it all in.

As it's Super Bowl Sunday, Flo, I think I'll order some chicken wings, cajun crab dip, salami and cream cheese with some chips and dip. I'll worry about indigestion later.

A couple of folks mentioned about colored texts and image sizes. Well I don't know much about tags for this site but you can use "real" HTML markup and do anything you want in the post. Click on the Tools tab at the top of the editor and select source code. If your eyes are starting to glaze over now then move on to the next post ;-)

See the output below:

Hello World

Here is the same image as shown above in a much clearer size for this forum window:

As you can see the exact same image displays in many different sizes without having to resize and save the original image. BTW, thats my PRR (Purvis Rail Road) office above with my water tower. It took me months to design that PRR logo - but it looks good to me ;-)

Back to the real world.  We took off a week ago and drove north to do some midweek skiing.  No crowds, no lines, no clueless teens high on Red Bull.  Now, that's the way to ski.

I don't own a laptop or a smart phone (who needs a phone that's smarter than I am?) so I get out of touch with the world when I'm off skiing like that.  We drove home Friday morning in a snowstorm, and got home to find the driveway plowed but no power.  We were out for about 30 hours.  The power came back Saturday evening.  I was out listening to music at a bar in the next town, and returned to find a warm house and a garage door that opened when I pushed the button.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
