RIP, Paul Kantner.  The Jefferson Airplane was one of the most popular bands of its time, back when I was in college.

David Bowie, Glenn Frey and now Paul Kantner.  2016 hasn't been a good year for old rockers.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

We are almost plowed and cleared at w**k. Today we finsh the City sidewalk ( cannot believe the locals pay thousands and thousand and thousands and thousands of dollars to these local gov. folks and they DO NOT clear the sidewalks ! Some of these Homeowners pay 12 k to 15 k on just their house every year not to mention car taxes, food taxes, utility taxes etc and what do they get ? NOTHING - UNBELIEVABLE - so they fuss at me and ask me why am I not clearing the City sidewalks ? My response, you are paying the taxes for them to maintain the streets and sidwalks why dont you call up the city, the sidewalk do not belong to me. Super Angry okay I feel a bit better - sorry for the SoapBox

Ulrich You are a good husband I can tell givingh up MRR for a day for YOH

Garry Wow ! I didnt think that word was allowed in here ! But thanks for the good thoughts !

Howmus - I hope that word (w**k) Surprise didnt offend you to much ! Water breaks it is that season

Henry - That is some nice work at the club !

BO Cylinder - what is non tremoring ? Is there earth quakes going on in your neck of the woods ?

Ken - Hope you feel better soon. Why do the saw bones think YOH leg is not mending ? Is that a Big Boy in the photo ?

Jimmy Braun - I love the Peanut. When I was a kid I thought snoopy was the greatest. Especially his plane flying skit !

DER - Have you gotten any feed back on the operations on your plan ?

Gotta get back to w**k

Ken - I think the oiling may have beentoomuch; I agree that if it runs on DC then the decoder may no be totally fried - maybe just wiping ouot any  excess oil will fix it; also, I have a habit of not plugging inthe wiring harness tight enuf, and it vibrates loose and  everything stops.

Henry, really nice layout pictures.

Hope all you diners have a good day. I gotta go troubleshoot a balky sound decoder; may have to package it up and send it back to the experts if I can't make it work. Sad

LOL!!!  Nah, just gotta have a bit of fun once in a while!  Being an old retired guy I generally have to check to see what day of the week it actually is.  I now have 6 Saturdays and one Sunday every week.... Whistling

MrMick, if Ken's loco will run on DC then the MOTOR is OK!  Otherwise it would not run at all on either DC or DCC....  If the MOTOR runs then the MOTOR isn't the problem!  He needs to check other things (The Decoder for instance) to find the problem. If you have a light bulb that doesn't work and you screw it into another socket and it does work and you screw another lightbulb into the first socket and it doesn't work...  The problem isn't the lightbulb!!!  Basic electricity 101 my friend...

Got an email from the city letting me that there indeed was a watermain break up the street.  They are asking us to run water to get all the loosened crud out of the line....

BO Cylinder my tremors were bad after heart surgery. I couldn't hold anything on a fork for 2 days, not that I was hungry for synthetic scrambled eggs and turkey painted to look like bacon.

Good evening Diners!
All the conversation about castles has my creative juices running in over-drive. I’ve had a long hard look at the Caerarvon castle kit and I think, despite its 22”x15” footprint it may well be do-able. However, in looking at just where to place it, I’m leaning towards a total switch around of the mountain / town placements.  I’m thinking the castle would represent a major tourist attraction, and might even merit a N3n tourist branch? Haven’t had time to develop that idea on the plan – but the castle and mountains re-arrangement is coming along. I’d show you, the 3D view, but Photobucket seems to be down today, so I can’t upload it.
Before I go get what is happily calle d”Bed lunch” in these parts, I’ll just comment on something Angellob6660 mentioned earlier.
I thought of modern era with Union Pacific and Amtrak. I got the locomotives and coaches and probably choose four diesels. I could make the 1990s but the locomotives that Atlas makes has no ditch lights, and can't find a manufacturer that makes them in N Scale.
Here’s a thought, if you care to add just the ditch lights to your existing locos. There are very small white surface-mount LEDs available  http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/smd-chip-leds.html for instance. I’ve bookmarked that site for my own possible follow up.
YGW: Feedback has been helpful, and it seems I'm not too far from the mark, so I'll go with the plan for now., Thanks.
It’s been snowing heavy wet uck for hours, and may all night. See you later..

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll just get another cup of decaf to tide me over at the moment...

YGW, One of my favorite ways of putting it (I think somebody used on here...) Is:  "Been busier than a cat covering poop on a marble floor...."

I have been busy sending emails out to the Division membership today.  Actually have heard back from a few more.  Guess we are going to have to pick up the phone and start twisting arms!  Several of the folks will be at Springfield this weekend, but will be back home early next week.  A couple are exhibitors and others are just going to the show.  Sent a couple Scholarship requests to the bank that handles them through a 501c3 account for us.

Even got some time in the train room.  Built the second cut stone support for the Girder Bridge.  Got a couple photos of the first one sitting where it will go, but can't show you because Pffffotobouquet has been off line all day, as someone said earlier.

A few days ago I read the gas and electric meters and sent the readings into NYSEG (my supplier).  Now I realize that this January has been a bit warmer than last January (but not really that much).  Found my Natural Gas usage was down by 24 therms from last January.  Now last January I was cranking the wood stove as much as I could!  Hmmmmmmm.....  Maybe the rebuild of the living room was not a bad thing in some ways.  There is now better insulation in the ceiling (wasn't any there as the dumbies put it on the roof allowing the warm air to freely flow into the attic and out...) and side wall.

I'll catch you all in the morning.  Prayers for all!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Felt pretty good most of the day at work. Starting to fade right now so I will be heading in pretty soon.

Mr Mick and Ray I have not given up on the PK 2000 B&O GP 30. I have to agree that it could be a simple lose wire. I may have over oiled the motor and gummed up the brushes as well. I was under the weather a little more last night and should had let them sit. Plus it does not help that the Proto motors have the flywheels pressed on as far as they do!

One of the things I like about my Atlas B&O GP 38 is the lube points are easy to get to. Yes What hate, is again I cannot get the darn shell off! Bang Head When it comes off this time, I am cutting the pounting taps off!

YGW Sue leg is doning fine, her foot on the other is not. While the fractuer bone is part of her little toe it is close to the ankel. About 3/4 quaters of the way back. Reason they know it is not healing but in fact worse is they took X-Rays last Wednesday and comparied them to the day after the fall.

 Later, Ken

Guys:

I have bad news, very bad news.

SOme of you may remember a while ago I asked for special prayers for train nut friend's son. He had demons wiht alcohol/drugs and suffered at least great depression, if not bipolar as he would fly into manic rages.

Well, he always threatened suicide if he didn't get his way, often usually geting money for his beer and drugs from his parents, train nut friend and wife.

Speaking myself after 3 attempts, last on in 2008,and last June I was in suicidal ideations, so went to CPEP and was taken involuntarily, even thoug I was there voluntary BEFORE anything happened again.

Well, last night he succeeded. He hung himself.

He was just 24.

RIP, Christian.

Prayers please.

Angel

Good Afternoon!

Galaxy- this is awful news! My sincere condolences to your train nut friend and his wife! You know my son´s name is also Christian ...

Photobucket is back so I was able to upload a picture of my layout I had taken yesterday.

It´s coming along - slowly. Well, I have to confess - I was bad. I had promised to stay away from carving the foam for a few days to keep the home nice and tidy, but I couldn´t resist to do at least some w*rk on the layout. OK, I cleaned up the mess, but Petra will still find a crumb of that foam stuff here and there.

Tomorrow I´ll be seeing my other train friend. I hope to get the loco you see in my avatar back into service.

CU later, folks!

Thanks for the reminder, OBVIOUSLY I wasn't thinking in copying that usage quote. I couldnt find an acceptable usage quote to use, but I think everyone knows the siren song mthology, maybe not.

I had to go back and look at what you were complianing about as it didn't register with me.

Good late morning Diners!
Dennis:
Surfs up for all the surfers in the diner.
good to know, thanks…We’re more like
This is how the man-door to our garage looked just after it stopped snowing last night. Never seen it completely covered before!
Now Photobucket has maintained itself, here’s the 3D view of how I think Caernarvon castle might fit on the layout. I have to configure the landscape more accurately for the N3n tourist line; and also to give more room for bus parking and facilities, but that end of the layout has more potential for both, I think, than does the corner, or the left hand end.
Henry:
turkey painted to look like bacon.
…that on toast, plus real scrambled eggs is my regular Sunday breakfast – no really, I’ve come to like it! Smile, Wink & Grin Glad the surgery was successful, and the tremors stopped for you.
Galaxy: Sorry to learn that. I’ve sent you a PM.
Ulrich: That is looking so good! Maybe Petra will find it in her heart to cut you some slack on the house cleaning front! Whistling Once your avatar loco is running, do you plan to model the catenaries? If so, in how much detail?
Well, it was supposed to be a Grand Lunch with friends coming over – but last night’s snow has left them powerless, and not wanting to risk the roads. So, it’s rather a smaller lunch today, and we’ll try for the “do” tomorrow.  See you later…

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 Special this morning!  Haven't had that in a long time.  Over easy on the eggs, Sausage links, Homefries, and a double order of the Sour Dough Toast!  Yep bring over the grape jelly and I do need a large pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast coffee too.  Thanks!

Well Dang, Galaxy and Garry, I get here late and I miss the offending stuff....  LOL  Whatever it said, glad you got it up to the standars of the Diner.  We don't want Vinnie to swinging that tire iron he carries with him, do we! Whistling  Galaxy, how awful about your train nut friend's son.  I remember you mentioning his difficulties before.  Let them know that we are praying for peace for them here in the diner!

I will be driving to Canandaigua today to take care of the kitties for my sister.  My SIL has been going some days.  She told me this morning she actually got to pet Iilya (the cat that was recently taken in) yesterday.  The poor little guy was dropped in the neighborhood and made foriends with my sister.  He is terrified of the car carrier and anyone he doesn't know.  I'm hoping we will become friends by the time my sister gets back from Asia.  Iilya did walk by when I was there a couple days ago.  Was very timid but didn't run off.  Just gave me a very wide berth to get where he wanted to be.  He is enjoying having a kittie friend in Claude as well.

I'm going to see what else I can get done in the train room before I head off to Canandaigua this afternoon.

Catch you all later!

Ulrich: That is looking so good! Maybe Petra will find it in her heart to cut you some slack on the house cleaning front! Whistling Once your avatar loco is running, do you plan to model the catenaries? If so, in how much detail?

John - she is actually quite generous, but I don´t want to overspend that credit Smile, Wink & Grin My plans for the catenary - as detailed and prototypical as possible. Sommerfeldt of Germany makes the appropriate catenary for the Rhaetian Railway, which is reasonably priced for the amount of detail you´ll get. Of course, there are much more detailed catenary systems offered, but at $ 70 compared to $ 7 for a mast they are silghtly out of my budget ...

I am just glad it´s such a small layout so I don´t need that much...

Now I maybe risking you getting mad at me, but somehow I am not happy with your plan of the new layout. While Steven as already commented on the switchback access to the yard, i.e. time saver, my concern is that all of the track aside from the interchange and the return track is nicely lined up with the edges of the layout. If that´s intentional, I´ll keep my mouth shut, if not, my question would be how open are you towards other design ideas?

Good afternoon

Galaxy, sorry to hear about your friends situation. Prayers, certainly, for the family.

Ulrich, nice photo on the progress of your layout - it's coming right along.

Well, I was unable to get that sound decoder to peep; it's back to the manufacturer, I think it's under warranty so maybe I will luck out, expense-wise. Although some regular decoders are not too pricy, sound decoders are a different story.

Weather here is getting warmer; I was able to skate a bit this morning (there is a small pond out back of our house) but now the ice is getting soft and wet. No freezing weather in sight for a while, very odd for this time of year in Maine.

Supper is on, see you all later...

I have been busier than a cat covering up poop. Yes, I believe it was Me Ray!

Galaxy. Sorry to hear about Your friends Son...that is truely sad...someone so young taking their own life and no one could help. Prayers for the family, along with the poor soul.Angel

Garry, Thank You for Your kind words.....yeah it was a four handed project...but I cheated and make two jigs for holding and gluing...that actually took longer than making the porch. LOL. But now, with the jigs made, I can use them for similar projects. Check out WPF in awhile and You will see the plan unfolding......

Thoughts & Prayer's, for All.

Today was Train Show day - the big Amherst show in West Springfield, MA.  The weather was totally pleasant and driving was easy.  I got there at 10 AM, which is a bad time.  The traffic was backed up all the way to Route 5, the main thoroughfare through town, and I was glad I printed a map so I could take the next exit and meander in the back way.

I spoke with maxman and Jim at City Classics, who are members here and vendors as well.

The only thing I specifically planned to buy was an interlocking tower, and I found the one I was looking for.  Then I saw the same tower being used on an operating layout, so I asked one of that club's members if I could look at the back side of the tower, because I wanted to see if there were windows because I plan to detail the interior.  Two windows, not a full wall, so as I passed by the Tichy Trains booth I bought some windows to bash into the tower, and also some picket fence for the new City Classics houses.  "Ah," thought I, "I need a dog to put inside this fence."  The B.E.S.T. booth, which features lots of nice detail castings, had cats and dogs.  One stop shopping, even I was on my feet for 5 hours today.

More of us than just me will be happy with the revival of Scalecoat paint.  It's now sold by Minuteman Scale Models of Hollis, NH.  I was able to get a spray can of Scalecoat II (for plastics) in Milwaukee Orange, so I can now repaint my Erie and Lackawanna switchers to road-appropriate colors and re-decal them.

Not bad at all for a day when I didn't plan to buy much of anything.

Yep Under The Weather Again. Sigh I was sort of OK when I woke up. By the time Jerry got to work I started fading fast. By 3:00 PM I was ready to go but I had a customer come, so I hung in there. Got the sale and then it was time to go.

Galaxy Sorry to hear about Train Nut Son.

Good late night Diners!
A productive day on SCARM adding some N3n tracks to service the Caernarvon castle tourist attraction.  The landscape is a bit strange, but mostly shows what’s possible. The track plan is now  with the N3n along the right hand edge, going into a tourist pleasing switch back to the castle. I 3D it’s like this  Part of the morning was spent adding turrets to the castle towers where the plan called for them.
Ulrich:
but at $ 70 compared to $ 7 for a mast they are slightly out of my budget ...
You don’t say! LOL  Knowing you, the final result is going to be awesome!Bow
Looking at the plan as dispassionately as I’m able this late at night, I can see that I could, if the inside curve can be made to work, rotate the whole of the mainline section on the top portion of the “L”. The rest of the plan is a compromise with the space available and what I want to do in operating it. I acknowledge that it is rigid looking, but maybe I can fudge the scenery features to break up that impression.  What were you thinking?
Must get to bed. ‘night all.

The kid threatened all hte tiem if he didn't get his way. He was jsut in the psych ward and checked himself out by saying he wasn't going to hurt himself, I told train nut and wife to NOT let tehm let him go home! Been there, DONE that, have the T shirt and the pic to prove it.

The arrangements will be to cremate the body and have Just ONE service instead of 3 days on end. I don't knwo yet what will happen wiht the ashes.

Don't feel up to posting a word of the day, with this going on.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Good Morning!

It´s bright and sunny outside - for a change. Nice Sunday weather!

Flo, I´ll have my big Sunday breakfast with all the works. You know, crisp fried bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs (the high cholesterol kind), a tall glass of OJ (just because it´s healthy), buttered toast, assorted jams and honey and gallons of coffee, if you please ...

Galaxy - what a desperate soul he must have been! And how terrible it must be for parents to lose a child this way! I feel so sorry!

I really have to give Petra a rest from being confronted with btiny bits of foam all over the place. These are just crumbs blown into the nooks and crannies of this household which take years to get rid off. There are clear signs of her turning into a somewhat sour mood Tongue Tied

Have a rewarding day!
