YGW There is a spray in place foam insulation, called 2 pound walltight that gives a R-value of 5.7 per inch. This is not do it yourself. You build a 2"x6" wall an inch out from the masonary wall and have it sprayed.
You do not need a vapour barrier over it, just drywall.

YGW In that case the PCM UP Big Boy is like it just out of the box, it broken! I may mess with it again, just giving it a little time to rest.
Just not getting a break lately. One of the cars exhaust needs to be replaiced, it has ture duals so that going to cost $300.00 and last night I heard a small dripping sound from under the house again!

I hope everybody is okay and wishes/prayer for anybody who needs it.

It's October and I'm edging back into trains. I bought my first train-related stuff in months today - a few sticks of balsa wood and some trees at Michaels, the craft place. I'm putting together a few "company houses" from City Classics, and I like the balsa sticks for re-enforcing corner and roof joints.
The weather has turned, but I'm still trying to get outdoors for exercise before I have to start going to a gym until ski season. I picked up a thermal bicycle jacket and some leg warmers so that I can stay warm on my bike for a few more weeks.

Hi Gang,
YGW, in reply to your question in regard to my home. The walls are 2x6 with r20 insulation batts in them, then the outside of the house over the sheating is a couple of layers of a product that was known back then as "Thermax", It is a foam insulation with a foil on both sides of it and then an insulation board in behind the aluminun siding and brick. Anyway at the time I remember working it out with the contractor and it totalled R32.5 for the walls. I have seen where on some energy efficient houses they built an outside wall and an inside wall staggering the studs to get more room for insulation, however We decided not to go that route and saved some $$$ by just using the one 2x6 wall and the outside Thermax.
Well, I worked this morning but took the afternoon off as I have a funeral to go to. I am not a fan of funerals, but one must do the appropriate thing for the Families. I now have three days off and it is supposed to rain some so there may be a chance I'll get to the train room for a while. Several projects that I have been waiting on the mail for, probably won't come till the first of the week now.
Hope everyone escapes the wrath of Jonquin and that you all have an enjoyable week-end.
Stay Healthy and Smiling.
Well that is fasinating. With several layers of foam insulation on the exterior what type of siding did you install ?
YGW

Nor am I. I am even less a fan of viewings. I told my wife, when I die, if she wants to have a viewing, prop me up in my favorite chair, turn on a ball game, and invite everyone over for a BBQ.

Howmus - That is neat meeting two people that love modeling. Did you sign them up for the NMRA ?
Ulrich - Neat design love the castle. I have always been fascinated by castles. Could you add a spur in one of the curves ?
Vega - Have you been back home ? Is the forest still there or is it cut down ?
Galaxy - Weft ?? What a neat word ! Could I use it in "I weft upstairs" ? Or "he weft for heaven" ? Colorado !!! Oh man am I soooo excited I always wanted to go to Colorado !!!
Ken - Grats on the beer free BBQ. Dont sell the 2884 on Fleabay ! Give me a call I am a model train rescuer I love taken broken things and making them like new !
Richard - Good news on the sawbones report. Yea watch the plywood picking up part that is tough on a fully healed body !
Not much happening on the MRR front. Recieved the NMRA Local yesterday and I am excited to see that there is an open house in a town withing a 1/2 hour of me. Gonnna check it out. Well gotta git in my 2884 N&W shaoed canoe fire up the ole boiler and steam across the pond that used to be dryland here in Northern Virginia ! Then I have to disembark and "weft" into some of my houses to check for leaks and make sure the pumps are running !

howmusUlrich, I like the mock-up of your layout. That should be fun for you to finally get to run some trains. Yes, I like the castle!
The guy who is developing the software promised to soon have a feature enabling you to run a train over your planned layout - who needs to actually build a layout then
While nothing better to do, I did some further refinement of the plan:
There is another bridge connecting the castle with the outside world, so Wunifred the Raging does not have to rely on the local parson to keep the footpath past the chapel open for travel.
Mornin' folks!
Zoe, just need another pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee. The first almost woke me up, but not quite....
The City of geneva DPW was just here to find and mark where the water comes in... It was right where it was the last time I had stuff done. Turns out both of the guys that were here love model railroads... I mentioned the water coming into the house in my Model railroad room down cellar and they both lit up.
'tis a bit chilly outside today. Currently 43°F outside with a high of 55° later this afternoon under cloudy skies. Sure hope they get the stoves going in the cabeese this weekend! We will have a new "restored" 1918 NYC caboose ijn the train. That one has a coal/wood potbelly stove in it that isn't yet hooked up. I won't be the car host on that one. Trees have started to turn and some are losing their leaves now.

I am waiting for one of my NMRA members to stop and drop off the projector he borrowed from me. he and some others are on their way to a weekend of operating trains in the Albany, NY area. Wish i was able to go with them, but just too much still to get done around here before I host a "old teachers of the Arts" get together in a few weeks here at my house. I should do this type of thing more offen and it would be a lot easier to clean up the place!
Have a great day!

Good Afternoon!
Our heartfelt condolonces go to the families and friends of the victims of the Roseburg, OR massacre!
It´s been a rather pleasant day so far - at least in terms of our weather. It´s bright and sunny, temperatures are at 18°C during the day, the air is clean and fresh and the leaves are turning golden - a beautiful fall day!
Did I tell you that the bridge won´t fit the way I had planned it? Well, I had to competely redesign the layout to make it fit. It was a heck of job which kept me busy for about 8 hours today. I re-drew the bridge and the chapel, using the kit parts as a template, re-designed the catenary to be closer to the real thing and developed a new track plan, which is basically the same as before plus two lengths of straight track added in the middle of the curves. While I was doing this, I started negotiations with SWMBO on the acquisition of more real estate for the layout and was granted the right to go forward!
Here is the now hopefully final plan (not that the layout will follow this plan 100% )
The difference to the "old" plan is hardly visible in these snapshots, but the track plan shows them:
The due to the changes, the layout has grown to a whopping 1.40m x 0.90m - still a mini layout!
How do you like the castle on top of the mountain?
G-Man - Colorado is a lovely location for this time of the year. The ride from Durango to Silverton must be a real treat with all those aspen trees turning golden! I took the ride back in July 1974. Unfortunately, all the slides I took got lost in one of our many moves.
Ken - good boy!
Richard - no lifting of heavy objects for the next 4 to 6 weeks! Be a good boy and listen to what your docs say about it!
Janie, I could do with a nice cup of hot coffee and a cinnamon roll, please!
Have a good one!
Good morning, everybody ...
Ken and Ray ..... Actually, the photo in MR is a very small image in the Workshop column. I sent the photo of my scrap yard to Jim Hediger thinking MR could use it in Trackside Photos. It was about 3 years ago when I did that. He liked the photo, but they just did a story about model scrap yards, and decided mine was too soon. I did not expect to see it published after that. However, I was surprised Jim used it in what may be his last Workshop column before retiring. The image in Workshop is too small to see details, but I am very honored they published it.
YGW ... The CZ dome observation is displayed adjacent to the Amtrak station in Maricopa, AZ. I see it when we are in AZ... Our daughter lives in Casa Grande which is 20 minutes away on a highway which runs next to the UP main line. ... The public does not have access to the inside of the CZ car.
Richard .... Yes, the weather was hot for certain while we were there.

Had a 300 word Posting last night that just went poof.
I think I broke a few laws last night, I BBQ with out any . Pretty sure there is a law in ILL that states you have to have a few beers when BBQ'ing. After Wendesay night beer fest, I decide letting my self drink when BBQ'ing was a cope out. By the way, I really like the Grunt Pork Rub.
Gary Congrats on the photos being in MRR Mag. Did you send in the phots or did they come out to your layout / home?
Ulrich Feel bad that you got a better camera that will not work with XP. Besides being broke it is one of the reason I have not got a newer computer. I cannot afford new programs if my old ones would not work with Windows 7.
yougottawantaKen - How would one fix teh PCM problem you are having ?
YGW The easy way would be to sell it on E-Bay! For some reasons I cannot get a good Big Boy either from Athearn or BLI /PCM? When I got the engine it had the problem. I sanded out the inside of the C part of the draw bar that clamped around the post in the tender and oiled it up and work fine for some time. But I was having other problems, from shorts inside of the engine. I guess I have had the darn thing apart 5 times now. When it runs, it runs great!
My PCM Y6b on the other hand has been a champ! Here is a link to BLI Y6b at Model Train Stuff. While they are not the PCM version I have, if they are half as good they would be a very good engine.

Cleared to Trainline cleaning cars from my RIP Track last night. The trucks where worn out and they kept derailing. Found that Athean Trucks center holes are the same sizes as the Trainline trucks and was able to get them installed. Hope to get my PK 2000 E-6b going this weekend!
See you all tonight.

take a looky here ^, for instance and you will find some of the places we will visit.
It a state I DOn't recall visiting in all my years in the diner... I could be wrong....
The FIRST place, and probably MOST POPULAR is the venerable Durango & Silverton Narrow guage, just for ULRICH's penchant for narow guage right now...!

Have a great ngiht's rest...
howmus. . Ride On Road, take it easy.... I would think twice about the plywood. . .
Not to worry, I was only kidding (mostly) about the plywood. I will wait until November to start construction.
Afternoon folks!
Chloe, I'll have a cup of hot chocolate to tide me over to diiner, please.
Been a busy day around these parts (so that is the normal for me I think). I have been working on a map to see where all the Cayuga County members are in my division. I have a petition that i am collecting signatures for. The petition has to have a super majority of the membership sign for it to go into effect... Long story and not one for publishing on here yet... I took Manét over to the vet to have his blood sugar checked. It is much better and is now 195. They like it to stay under 200 for cats so he is now where he minimally needs to be. the vet says it should continue to drop a bit more over the next few weeks. His urine sample still shows some white corpuscles so he got yet another antibiotic injection. So I am another $92 poorer..... Good thing I love the little guy! She said he may not ever regain the complete use of his hind legs..... Time will tell.
The owner of a local paving company stopped by to look at what I want to get done. The estimate is $4,500! That includes 3 seperate jobs actually. It is cheaper to get it all done on one day than to have him do it as seperate jobs... What the heck, it's only money! Some of what I want to get done should ease the water problems in the basement as well, so I think it will be $$$ well spent in the long run. May be a slim Christmas this year. He hopes to do them in a couple weeks.
Ride On Road, take it easy.... I would think twice about the plywood as it can place different stress than just picking up 20 lbs. You don't want to tear out the repair! My father did that on his second hernia repair.... It wasn't fun for him. Had to go back in and have it done again and was laid up for twice as long that time! BTW, I'd say about 3.5 to 4 lbs.
I'm now waiting for a Scouting friend to stop by and pick up a bunch of matterials for the handicapped Cub Pack we work with (He is commissioner for the Pack, I am commissioner for the Troop). Then left overs for supper (again). Catch you later!
I just got back from the doctor and the hernia repair is healing up nicely. Starting next week, I can go from lifting 15 pounds to 20 pounds. (How much does a sheet of 1/2 plywood weigh? What's a henway?) I got clearance to start riding the stationary bike next week--a mind-numbing experience, but better than nothing, or worse, sitting on my butt eating potato chips. By the end of the month, I may be back to full activity. He said put in a 6.5cm mesh patch and it will take some time for the muscle to grow into the patch. Modern medicine is amazing.
Good Afternoon,
A very pleasant 65F here and sunny too. We made it through Sept without any frost which is quite amazing. Fall has been getting milder here for a few years now. We used to get frost at the end of August but not now.
Yesterday I had new front brakes and a set of tires installed on the car so we should be good for the winter. I also had to get a front power door lock replaced. While the total bill was substantial I really can't complain as it is the first money I've had to spend on the car since I bought it 4 years ago.
YGW, here walls are often built with 2x6 so they can hold the insulation.
Well I think I will go outside and have a coffee along with the Nov. MRR magazine that came a couple of days ago.
CN Charlie
Johnboy - how do you get an r32.5 wall ? Is it 10" thick wall ? We use a 31/2 wall with a system called "flash&batt. You spray about an inch of foam in the wall and sides of studs and then install r13 batt insulation it gives us about an r15/r16.
Garry - Did you get to go inside the zephyre car ? Glad you made it back safely
Ken - How would one fix teh PCM problem you are having ?
Hello - lion, Gary, Howmus....
What happened to the bloke from New Zealand ?
Good Evening, Folks!
Well, here we are - in the October Diner! Thanks, G-Man, for moving the Diner to this Month´s location. I do see familiar faces around here, so I must have come to the right place.
For those who already hold their November copy of MR in their hands - my October edition just arrived a few days ago!
I am not sure whether this is a good day or not, Yes, the weather has been fair today - just the way I like it, but the rest ... The post man brought those missing kits from Tilly Models in Holland. A quick check with the bridge (the big one at the left corner of the layout), revealed that it doesn´t fit the way I want it. I cannot put it up in a curve - I need to introduce a straight section of track for the trains to be able to pass through the tunnel section of said bridge. This will require a lot of fiddling and tweaking of the track plan. Does not make me happy as I need different track than I have - there goes my October MRRing budget!
My computer issues also have not been solved
Have a great start into the new month!
Garry: Glad you made it home, safe and sound. Sorry we didn't have some cooler weather for you while you were here. Today we are flirting with a record high--the record stands at 107F and the forecast high is 106F. 106 in October!? November-March makes it all worthwhile, at least, that is what I keep telling myself.
I am looking forward to cooler temperatures and the removal of the weight restriction on my lifting to organize the garage. I haven't done much besides ballasting on my railroad. The first phase was the yard so I would have a place to park my trains. With the cooler weather, the ability to lift, and an organized garage, I plan on adding nearly a mile to my mainline, which will allow me to build my town of Bradshaw.
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Heritage Flakes Organic cereal with fresh blueberries and skim milk, please. Oh, yes, a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee is in order as well.
Went to the District Committee meeting last night and right about the time it is supposed tyo get over a suddenly had the realization that I had left a half acorn squash baking in the oven at home..... I quickly excused myself and got home as quickly as I could expecting a house full of smoke at the very least! No problems but the house was nicely heated and smelled like overdone baked squash. That got emptied ionto the trash and the sheet it was on is still soaking in the sink. Early "What's his name's Disease I guess.
I just got back from delivering a sample of Manét's urine to the vet to be tested. he goes in for a blood sugar test later this afternoon. We shall see what we shall see..... He appears to be a little better at times. He can walk a bit farther than he was before he stops and rests. He may never get back the full use of his hind legs I guess. He can jump up on the couch and chairs in the living room, so I spend some time every day scratching his tummy and petting him.
Something called the sun is shining here in the Finger Lakes from time to time today. First day that has happened this week. Ended the month of September down about 30 kWh from last year. Yesterday the panels produced a whooping 1.67 kWh.....
Garry, I haven't gotten my November issue of MR yet. I looking forward to reading it!
Catch you all later!
Good morning .....
Galaxy: ...... thanks for starting October's Trackside Diner.
Everybody : ....... Everyone is welcome to visit the Diner, of course !
.........
Our flight back from AZ arrived at 11:50 PM last night, and it was about 3:00 when we were home going to bed. ... We had a very enjoyable visit with our youngest daughter and her husband.
I'll review recent posts in September Diner when I get a chance .
I'm pleased to have received a copy of November Model Railroader because retiring Jim Hediger included a photo of my "Reggie's Junk Yard" in his workshop column. Jim was a bit creative with the accompaning story, and things were not exactly as he described. However, that does not bother me at all. Glad to see the picture published !
This old CZ dome/observation car is on display in AZ.
Happy Model Railroading
