Ken - Nice talking to you today. The post anchor system works okay for shorter fence systems. Taller fences would not work to well on. Also as discussed the anchor needs to go to the frost level. In general deeper the post the more stable the upright piece.

Recovering from dentist visit. Thank God for pain meds ! Oh geez the dentist was shoving on the insert that he was pushing my head back into the cushion of the chair - hard ! Oh and the drilling out of the bone Ick!

Sir Madog

Afternoon, Folks!

After a rather damp start this morning, a fresh breeze turned the day into a nice one. Not too hot, just comfy. Most of Germany is again suffering from a heat wave, it´s only us up north enjoying pleasant temperatures.

galaxy
Herr Ulrich: do you guys have such things as window air conditioners over there? How much would a small one for your BR window cost you? Maybe we can get you one?

Galaxy - or windows aren´t made for those. We´d have to get a wall mounted one, but then you´d have a problem of getting rid of the water. For those few days we have hot weather it isn´t really worth the trouble (and the cost).

you mea n you have"awning windows" {tip out}? instead of sash over sashes?

If not awnings, can you describe them?

over here we have a few options: one is a stand on the floor model that has an exhaust to the window..it has a bucket for water collection:

like this:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/LG-Electronics-7-000-BTU-Portable-Air-Conditioner-with-Dehumidifier-Function-67-Pint-Day-and-Remote-Control-LP0711WNR/202562960

or:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/LG-Electronics-8-000-BTU-Portable-Air-Conditioner-and-Dehumidifier-Function-with-Remote-Control-48-Pints-Day-LP0814WNR/204684040

Would that somehw work for you?also a dehumidifier can take water out of the air, would that  work for you? {the above unt should also work as a dehumidifier, or a more expensive model will}

or there is this kind:{evaporative cooler or as hte one poster here calls it 'swamp cooler']:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Port-A-Cool-1000-CFM-2-Speed-Portable-Evaporative-Cooler-for-300-sq-ft-PACCYC06/205845248

http://www.homedepot.com/p/UltraCool-700-CFM-3-Speed-Portable-Evaporative-Cooler-for-350-sq-ft-with-Motor-CP70/100664580

or YOU can MAKE one like this with Ice chest, fan and tubes and ice:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2Yv5RyQP4I

cheaper yet wiht a styrofoam cooler:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3YvF4eVQO0

the ice chest air coolers use the fan to blow across the ice/cold water residue to cool the air..it WILL add some moisture to the air possibly, but it might work for you!

 and cheap too!!!

What you think?

MR. B: I did the "make your own developing stuff" in HS too. Don't know whatever became of the enlarger?

VCR tapes...since we dropped the extra high cost cable channels, we also decided that the VCR tapes hadd to go, since we have had a DVD palyer for some odd dozen years now,and a growing collection of DVDs vying for space wiht the tapes,,so the tapes got thrown out, probably should have sen if anyone here wanted them.there are a few disney ones MOH has held onto to havethe titles with which to replace with DVDs if they ever come out again. For once we moved up with the times...

GARY;never had a super 8, but My fahter still has SLIDES, as they thought the best way to save pics was that way!

speaking of that, my parents thought that they REALLY had somthing when they bought a mini reel-to-reel taperecorder! it now sits inthe closet... speaking of which I was surprised to find these still available {and CHECK the price!!!:

http://www.amazon.com/Califone-CAS1500-Cassette-Player-Recorder/dp/B00529QB0W/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1437242320&sr=8-12&keywords=cassette+tape+recorder

both my brother and I had one growing up in the early 70s in fact I think my father still has my brother's model!

well, off to do things. MOH is HOME!

Afternoon guys

well I think my old desktop has finally gave up the ghost. only used it for printing things and playing games. Pretty much everything I do PC wise now I do on the iPad, a lot more faster and nicer picture too. The only thing with the PC was I like using it for gaming. All the important stuff was backed up months ago when I knew it was on its last legs. figures as I had been wanting to play my one PC hockey game for a bit. I play more tabletop sports games now though. Might have to get out the games table and setup a game of strat o matic baseball. I had a nice excel file too that kept track of stats.

Afternoon Folks!

Flo a lemonade please.

YGW---Glad you're feeling a bit better. I literally feel your pain...well felt it up until yesterday. Pain meds are certainly your friend. Why is it the dentist and/or his assistant feel the need to talk to you and ask you questions while having their fingers and very sharp or nasty sounding tools in your mouth?

Its a hot one here today! Finally a normal temperture. I plan on sitting on the porch sipping something cool before heading out back to grill up some steaks and fixings for diner.

Have a good one all and Happy Modeling!!

Don.

OH, I forgot:

Today's Word"

dittohead

PRONUNCIATION:
(DIT-oh-head) http://wordsmith.org/words/dittohead.mp3

MEANING:
noun: One who mindlessly agrees with an idea or opinion.

ETYMOLOGY:
After callers on the talk radio program Rush Limbaugh Show who often unquestioningly agree with the radio host. The word began as a term to describe listeners to the show who would agree with the previous caller’s effusive praise of Limbaugh with the word “ditto”. From ditto (same, likewise), from Italian (Tuscan dialect ditto) detto (said, above-mentioned), from Latin dictus (said), from dicere (to say). Ultimately from the Indo-European root deik- (to show, to pronounce solemnly), which also gave us judge, verdict, vendetta, revenge, indicate, dictate, paradigm, diktat, fatidic, hoosegow, interdict, retrodiction. Earliest documented use: 1989.

USAGE:

Wade Lawlor and all his dittoheads are implicating her in the murder of the colleague she never met.

Evening Diners,

I received my Union Pacific WWD auto rack today. When I took it out out the box, I inspected it up close.

When I bought on eBay it was listed new and undamaged. Only one side of the picture was taken, but not both sides.

By looking at it closer I noticed that one of the doors was loose, the ladder next to it was a little bent, with a crack that connects the toghter, (simple thing to fix with CA and pressure) and bits of paint that came off.

This item was used that he added automobiles and derailed on his layout sometime on its journey.

I don't want to return it because I been looking for this particular auto rack for the past year.

I hope someone else is having a great modeling day.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer please so I can cool my self from the inside. Big Smile

Work Front Speaking with YGW was all most the best part of this day. It was slow again, only 4 customers all day? But like last Saturday, the 4th customer was the one I needed! While it was not a $4000.00 sale like last weekend I did make a extra $120.00 if I have done the math right.

YGW First thank you for taking the time to speak to me. You did give me some great tips with me wanting to use 10 foot spaced post. I did find some OZ-Post that go down 34 inches. I all so understand your's and Galaxy concerns about the OZ-Post System, I all so share them. But I am not worried about them lasting 15 years, I be happy with 5 years.

 See you all later

Whistling

G'd Evening Crew,

Whoever is behind that miniskirt and apron tonight, I'll have a hot chocolate and a couple of raisin oatmeal cookies for a snack. Please and Thanks.   (if only)

Have just been browsing the posts here and unwinding a little getting ready for some horizontal time.

Was out and about today, bought some new carpeting for the master bedroom, also some paint to freshen it up after all these years, so that will be a time consuming projet over the next couple of weeks.  Us old Pharts don't move to fast on some of these chores. But we do get them done.  (Get-R-Done)

Seeing that I was driving by the LHS I had to stop in for a look around. They had,had an Illinois Terminal GP-40 on the shelf there for about two years and I had admired it many times and thought it would be a great looking loco to patch for the LM&E. I have done a couple of ex-Reading diesels that way and the green and yellow really work for the home road colors. In my thoughts I had pretty well made up my mind that I would pick it up today. Well, wouldn't you know it >>> it sold earlier this week. So much for that thought.  But I did pick up a cornerstone model of the REA building that will sit to the lower left of my elevated station.  Looks to be a fine kit and look forward to the build. (Pretty straight forward on this one, might add a small two story extention on the right end of it.

I hope you all have a great Sabbath tomorrow, and that Galaxy and Ulrich get their needed sleep. Sure hope all with dental pain are blessed with it being tolerable and shortly only a distant memory.

Ray, I think it is all your fault in getting me into this redecorating mood, at least you are whom I will blame as you can't get at me. I sure do like how your decorating has come around, but you weren't wheeling the paint roller, were you?

Some great pictures agin this week-end, I love those threads.

YGW., would like to see some of those homes you are describing.

Ken,  I really like framing but I don't enjoy fencing, so, I'll not donate my time there.

We had a good rain here this afternoon, about 1/2 inch. It has been a very long time as we are really dry here. I believe they are getting rain in the north as well that will help greatly with all the fires up there.

James,   Glad to hear your trip went well other than the battery, but if it has lasted that long for you, you really did get your moneys worth.  Usually 5 to 6 years max with our winters. Enjoy your summer escape and hope the fishing is great.

Well all for now as I feel I would only be rambling on.

Prayers and blessing for all in need.

Good Morning!

Sunday again! Seems to remain a wet day, so we are back to our usual, rather miserable Summer weather.

Chloe, I´ll have my big Sunday breakfast of you already know what, and make everything BArry-sized, please!

Today, we are in for some more "Plandampf" action!

In May 2014, a major steam event was organized in Germany based around the town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Nine steam locomotives along with a couple of diesels and appropriate rolling stock provided 5 days of action packed steam.

Enjoy!

GM, MEN!

I see Ulrich has already been in. I am loosing my #1 spot for morning greetings! {LOl}

I actually slept again last night, except for the facilities interruptions I was able to get 7 hours of sleep...hten my back said "HELLO! TIME FOR A MED!"....so I HAD to get up. Bumer,  was hoping for aobut 8 or 9 hours of sleep. With both the A/cs running full blast last night it was comfy in here!

It is 66F out there now, but will rise into the 90s, with heat indicies in the 100s. Our turn for high heat weather now I guess...

I ordered a cologne made in Hawaii we really love, and it was supposed to be 3 of the 3oz ones, and they sent 3 of the 1.6oz ones instead....so I called, expecting only to get 2 more of the 1.6 to equate to about my 9oz total original order, but I guess they will send 2 of the 3 oz ones anyway? good customer service from ABC Stores, Hawaii! {they have one or tow in Las Vegas I guess too, but primarily in Hawaii, Waikiki has one about on every corner!}

The parkign garage collapse at one of the local hospitals is under investigation, but will be i guess many months before the report is ready. There is a municipal parking garage in the city htat is due to run out of "useful life" in 2018 that they have clsoed the top two floors to "repair", but I think it should be just torn down and rebuilt better, stronger, faster {sorry I got carried away with the 6 million dollar man theme opener!}. The one at the hospital was 35 years old ,and supposedly "had original design flaws" and all "all issues" form inspection were "taken care of in 3013"..but you can see the rust {Still, in the news shots of the undisturbed parts} seeping out! DUH! tha and salt from the roads on cars melting off.

I hope his doesn't get to be considered "political"...but WHY is it that ALL municipal projects are built to the minimum code, by the lowest bid contractor, who will cut corners and use inferior materials, all in order to 'get it done On or Under budget, and ON time"??? YGW: no offense since you as you are a  builder, hope you don't cut too many corners!

well, best get some breakfast...

Gooooood Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please, thank you.

Dennis- We have an LG smart TV in our living room for probably 2 or 3 years. We like it and have had no trouble with it at all. We have it on most of the day, even though we're not watching it, and that's like from 6 am until usually 10:30-11 at night 7 days a week. I would buy another LG product in a heartbeatYes.

Ken- OH well if you’re gonna rent an auger then you’ll be done in a snap. Actually, I dig with a 4” “arm-strong” auger that digs easy, and then make the too small four inch hole larger with the regular post hole digger. That is actually pretty easy. I can dig a 2 foot-ish deep hole on about 5-10 minutes or so with little effort. Now if I had to put up an entire fence….yah. I’d get a power auger. And Brenda has the same issue with her right lung. We didn’t hear about the common in the Midwest thing, but that would explain his real lack of concern. The Doctor has been taking catscans every 6 months to watch it for a couple years now and it hasn’t changed so she is at 1 year intervals now. He says he’ll do that for a couple years then every 5 if all is as he thinks and never gets bigger. He says it could go away as well, but don’t count on it. She’s a smoker too.
Aaas for those anchors. Huh?Not a fan. I would agree with the ok for one or two post repair even if a taller fence, but not two together and especially not for several. Shorter 4 foot fence  Confused Hmmmaybe, however for a repair, to get the old post out, you end up with a huge hole anyway so…no need. Also, even if it extends past the frost line, most will be above as well as the flat box the post sets in so as the above ground constricts and heaves, since the anchor is tapered over a few years the anchor will work it’s way up I would think. I mean everything else does, why wouldn't that. May not be too much of an issue if it’s just one stuck in the middle of a fence but then again could be. The regular way has the concrete down there to hold the post from being squeezed up (also why you can get away with not going quite as deep). That tapered thing does not. I'd just hate to have to go back and do the same thing a couple three years later. The posts are too short and you'd have to buy them again too.

WElp, Brenda's up so I guess I oughta start my marinade for the ribs I suppose. Gonna make Asian style ribs today. They’ll marinate for a couple hours then, depending on the rain status at noon, I may have to do them in the oven. If it’s raining like it is now (light and off and on), I can use the grill in the end of the garage. If it picks up or becomes windy/stormy, then oven it must be. With any luck the rain will be over and I can do it out back where I belongSighLaugh.

Morning guys

played around with the desktop last night and it boots in safe mode, ran a disc check which took about three hours and it started fine. went to turn it back on a few minutes ago after I got back home and nothing again, oh well nothing too important on it. Just games which rarely get played anymore. didn't expect to get as long as I have out of it as I have replaced the power supply once before. It's a PC from 2006 so it doesn't owe me anything. I'm sure what I'm typing on now ( iPad ) is miles ahead of what that thing could do. but it was a good gaming computer I will give it that. A lot of the games I played on it were sports simulation games which I'm sure down the road wil have app versions. The one game I play a lot has a app game.

going to dinner at my parents tonight, they are having all the family over. The temps right now are 32c but feeling closer to 42 so I bet there will be some good storms when the cold front moves through.

Good Morning,

Sun so far today and it is nice out, not too hot yet, no idea of the temp as I haven't looked at the weather.

We were down in Thief River Falls the past few days visiting our friends. I did pick up my Klein's order too. That BLI Mike is a very nice loco. I did a very brief test run last night when we got home just to be sure everything is working ok. I will set the   CVs later when I have time or inclination.

Ken, as far as those metal fence post anchors go, I can give you personal experience as I have used them often. Our frost situation here is far more severe than yours with at least 4 feet of frost every winter. I have a 4' fence in the front that is about 48' in 8' sections containing 7 of those metal post anchors. It has been in for over 15 years, perhaps closer to 20. It has never heaved or moved. I also used those anchors to repair the fence along our back yard as the cedar posts rotted at ground level and the fence was in danger of falling over. I drove in an anchor beside the cedar post and then put in a 2' cedar post in it that I screwed to the good above ground portion of the old post. That repair was done on 55' of fence on 6' sections. The repair was done about 7 or 8 years ago and it is holding just fine. A lot cheaper than replacing the fence.  I have used them to repair other posts in a similar manner.

Well time to get at it whatever it is. TV marathon night again as it is Sunday and we like the shows on PBS.

Actully I am in a completely different area of construction. We buy the land, do the design and the land development and then design and build the homes.

In regards to goverenment work whether local, state or efderal I can tell you that it is very hevily regulted. I used to work in commercial side when I first started. I hated working on county and state jobs because the stupid money wasting stuff one had to do to comply with the regulations and eveything was way over designed. It used to tick me off to see my tax dollars being wasted. In this case I bet they will find some kind of design flaw or some unforseen circumstance that contributed to the failure.

Don - I think the dentist talk to you to help take your mind off of the tortue going on in your mouth. yea the pain meds are your friends when he is done !! Confused

Ken thanks for the compliments. One last recommendation on the post. Cut a short piece of post and use it drop it in the top to use for the hammer to hit. If you bang on the metall itself you will probably bend the edges and make it difficult to get the post in later.

Johnboy send an email to my PM and I will send you a link and pictures.

Evening guys

started out this morning heading to my hockey shop to pick up a few things, actually just tape and stick wax.

we had dinner at my parents with the whole family there, a lot of people and we had to dodge some line of storms that moved through. It has been a very hor and sticky weekend. it's nice being able to see the whole family at once. my mom wants to do it each year but can be hard to get everybody together at once. It was a fun time though. Back at work tomorrow but hope I can get out to shooting some more pucks around this week if it cools down a bit at night.

Ken, I second YGW's recommendation on using a short piece of post to hammer in the steel post. I used that with a 5 pound sledge to do the hitting. You can get most of the post in the ground if you are willing to hit it enough but then you have to dig the side of the steel one a bit in order to get at the bolts to tighten the wood post into it.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Work Front Little up set about something. OK big time up set! I post details latter but seems the rules changed about Spiff's and I have lost $200.00 on this coming paycheck.

CN Charlie And here I was ready to give up on the drive in post! I think one of the things that YGW is worried about is I want a 6 foot tall fence.

YGW I will try to find time my next day off and take some pictures to show you what kind of mess I am trying to deal with. Sometimes I feel like I am making a little head way. Then like tonight I just stare at the mess and wounder if I will ever get this place not to be a over grown dump!

 See you all later, Ken

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a large glass of fresh lemonade with a sprig of mint would really hit the spot tonight.

It was a hot and muggy weekend out at the museum.  We only had about 400 guests there (down from around 600 last month).  Today it was over 90°F with around 80% humidity.  The Erie caboose also gets the heat from the back radiator of the 80 tonner if the door is left open...  I am beat!  Air conditioning in the PiP sure felt great on the way home!

Been catching up with the posts.  Hopefully the new furniture  (couch and chair) will be arriving early this week.  The Pip goes in for it's 30,000 mile service on Wednesday.  The computer says I have averaged 74+ mpg over the 30,000 miles and have gotten 30% of those miles purely from EV miles.  It would be a lot more except for the trips out to the museum.....

Taday's local paper listed an obituary for the guy who lives right across the street from me here.  This is the family with the 110lb pit bull.  He had a heart attack a few years ago, but last I saw him he seemed to be doing fine.  There have been a bunch of cars parked over there for the last two evenings when I got home from the museum.  Now I know why....  I will get a card for his widow later in the week when I go shopping.

Have a great night!

Ken, the back fence that I repaired using those metal stakes is a 6' fence.

GM, MEN!

Today is Monday, July 20th, 2015!

well, i didn't sleep much last night.

HAve to to to my Dr, and explain the fiasco I had at the hospital ER before CPEP. He WON'T like it, I am sure! The bigger problem is the hospital farms out it's ER people from the city!

Hmm...I have too many anacronisms in my life that are too close to each other...CPAP machine, CPEP psych org., etc. Can't get them mixed up!

ah, well....

Zip it!

Oh, Today's word:

astringent

PRONUNCIATION:
(uh-STRIN-juhnt) http://wordsmith.org/words/astringent.mp3

MEANING:
adjective:
1. Contracting or constricting.
2. Caustic; pungent.
3. Stern; austere.
noun: A substance that constricts body tissues.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin astringere (to bind fast), from ad- (toward) + stringere (to bind). Ultimately from the Indo-European root streig- (to stroke or press), which is also the source of strike, streak, strict, stress, strain, and strait. Earliest documented use: 1541.

USAGE:

“However, unlike the apple and its other cousin the pear, quince flesh is hard and astringent and cannot be eaten raw.”
Jan Bilton; Quinces, the Perfect Accompaniments; Hawke’s Bay Today (New Zealand); Apr 25, 2014.

Young Ajay Mishra, whose family carries with it a wound that will not heal, reads Ernest Hemingway and finds in that astringent language a way out.”
Amrita Dutta; Remains of the Day; The Indian Express (New Delhi); May 10, 2014.
