BATMAN

I don't usually pay attention to the "star" rating system at the top of the page, however I did notice that this thread has been rated five stars.

Really.........?

Like everyone else reading this, I have stopped in to rubberneck at this car wreck and find it a rather unfortunate story to have appeared on the forum. It is like when people yell jump at the poor guy about to throw himself off the bridge and cheer when he finally does it.Tongue Tied

Brent,

My wife the counselor says if they are really going to jump, no outside input either way is likely to matter, they will do it sooner or later - she suggests they take a taxi to the bridge so they don't tie up traffic.

In her profession they can only help those who want help.

I agree Sheldon and that is not my point. There seems to be a few on here that are taking great delight in  this mans situation the same way some take delight in the poor guy who is about to jump.

Giving a "great thread" rating on something so unfortunate just puzzles me, that's all.

Well after all this ... I kind of had to watch the video, which is not easy to sit through.  The fact that he chose to post it on YouTube is even stranger than his behavior.  I was thinking "and him destroying his layout makes his wife feel bad .... how?"

I was partly reminded of the famous Donald Duck cartoon where Donald goes ballistic thinking his 3 nephews have taken up smoking, only to realize that the cigars they were hiding (and which he destroys) were his birthday present.  He then gets very small.  But I was even more strongly reminded of this scene starring Jonathan Winters in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.  The one where he destroys Arnold Stang's garage ...

Mr. Plumb's comments suggest that the loco in question was a very specific loco.  The layout was of a very specific place he remembers as a child, and there were many social relationships online being built because of his efforts.

It seems, just speculating here, like the layout had more meaning to him than maybe a layout should have.

Maybe the mere questioning of the cost of a loco by his wife was a match that lit a fuse on a powderkeg that was building anyway.  Maybe he simply destroyed something that he felt was slowly taking over his life.  He has been freed.  That's kind of how I see it anyway.

Regardless of what one concluded from watching this 'quiet' and gentle, soft-spoken and mild-mannered, if talented, modeller throughout his many postings, he has managed to leave many head-scratching followers with this one bizarre and (I'm sure he'll soon see...) regrettable act.  Not the posting...it is an exension of his ego and stroking from his followers...but the act of wilfully and deliberately destroying something.  Sheldon's counsellor wife should see it as symbolic of their marriage.  That is why I, who am not a clinical psychologist or counsellor, can see that his wife may be in danger herself.  This was a rage burst, self-inflicted, but it may be inflicted on her the next time he pops.  I'm positive he'll pop again, and soon.  Way too much anger and resentment seething in this person.

When he has time to consider "what she made him do", and that's the classical rationalization of essentially controlling and abusive men/husbands, he is likely to turn on her.  He clearly blames her.  She was his obstruction.

All true enough, but lets not assume it is only him who is disfunctional in the relationship - hence my earlier comments - I would have been gone long before it came to that.

Has anyone considered the possibilty that this was a stunt and that the joke is on us?   Perhaps, he wasn't mad at all.  I actually thought about that as a possibility as I watched the video.

The follies of our modern Era of communication- where everyone can be a star (or something else) for their 15 minutes of fame and allow the stupified and awed public to follow them as if there personally. Quite frankly, I will keep my focus on the less dramatic aspects of our hobby, such as a restful viewing of a train passing through colorful fall scenery.

LOL

I gotta tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed the video.

After all, isn't this part of model railroading?

At least he acted out what most of us want to do at one time or another.

At the start of the video, I didn't think he would get too far, using a 1x3 scrap of wood, but then he got serious and moved to a spade shovel.  The hammer was OK, but I would have used a full length sledge hammer for maximum effect.

ahh, thanks for posting, it made my day.  LOL x LOL

Rich

Nah, use a dead blow hammer, then pour gas on it and burn it.  Just make sure you drag it outside first so you don't burn down your house, too!

Seriously, I kind of feel bad for him.  He reached the breaking point, no doubt from dealing with a controlling, selfish, manipulative woman who envied his talent and hated him for it.  You can sort of see it on his face -- "I'm trapped in a hellish marriage to someone who controls everyone and everything, and when I do something for myself to make my life less miserable, she says no.  I can't leave her because she's an I invalid, so all I can do is destroy the only thing that makes me happy, both to prove to her that she's won and to remind myself that I can't have happiness."

Dumb button.

Anyway, I'm not saying he did the right thing, that he shouldn't leave, or that that he doesn't have anger issues, but it seems clear that his wife is driving him nuts, and she refuses to let him have anything to himself - it all has to be about her.  I know several guys who are stuck in that situation, and they'd rather serve in hell on earth with sure wish wives than risk being alone.  One friend finally had enough, got a divorce, then had his whole life unravel.

I won't even watch it, we had to tear out a club layout as the building was sold. Whatever your demeanor, I've had layouts come and gone, perhaps not in an angry pout tho, but as positive decisions for something better. Perhaps this guy will just build something else after his tirade.

Skimmed through this topic quickly.

First, I prefer topics with descriptive titles - please be kind to us and make your topic title descriptive.

Second, I prefer not to be a voyer to dysfunctional drama in someone elses life so chose not to watch the video.  This aspect of YouTube and the internet in general seems like something that is wrong with todays society and shows the darker side of humanity.  When people talk about the human race "evolving", all I have to do is look at things like this to remind myself that it seems to be quite the opposite.  We all seem to be racing to the bottom.

Wow!

65 posts on three pages about a video showing a guy goings nuts and smashing up his nice layout - for reasons which are very private. I don´t know (and don´t want to know) what Alan P. intended by having this action filmed and published, but I can sure say that this is an unusual behaviour and he should seek professional help. After all, displacement activities can lead actions worse than just destroying a layout.

We could have certainly done w/o this video!

Well said.  Although not professionally produced, the video is an example of how video media can exploit some of the human inabilities to resist more primal attractions.

Oh well...enough OT....

JG:

No need to apologize for the title of the thread. IMO, "Mr. Ed" is over the top. I looked at the video and when I saw enough and got the jest of it I went on to other things.  I can pick and choose. I actually think the thread title is appropriate.

Thanks for sharing.

Guys,

Respectfully, some of you see the issue while some others seem to be mocking or downplaying the scenario.

Perhaps I'm off base but in viewing the video what I saw was a an elderly gentleman that is likely physically and/or emotionally exhausted. From his demeanor one can surmize that he's been experiencing several back-to-back situations that have been taking a toll on his mental well-being. The last scenario regarding a locomotive's "price tag" might seem insignificant, yet it was the "tiny finger" that was strong enough to push him over the edge.

Most of us here would never imagine destroying something that we put so much of our creativity and effort into, but yet when someone is feeling extremely stressed out, that person may lash out at someone or something that they may have a close relationship or attachment to. Is it logical? Of course not, but most of us have seen that happen in our lifetime.

Imho, at the very least, this gentleman deserves our encouragment rather than scoffing. A few words of support on his YouTube video would be a kind gesture to a fellow modeler.

Thank you, AntonioFP45, for putting it so kindly and eloquently. I too saw it as very sad that someone was pushed to their breaking point.
