Garry - the 928 was apparently to "soft" for the typical Macho Porsche driver of those days. The 924 had even a worse reputation of being a "ladies car". Adding some extra weight around the hips and calling it 944 didn´t help. Up until today, a true Porsche is only the 911 series, although the original concept has been watered down to give way to modern technology.

Good morning. ... I'll have coffee and an apple turnover, please.

It is good to see everyone here.

Last night I assembled 4 open top hopper car kits. These are AccuRail Great Northern, Canton hooper cars. These kits are easy to assemble and look very good. I'm expanding my hopper fleet because eventually I will add a coal mine to the layout.

Ulrich ... Anytime I see your models, I can tell you are a talented model railrader, but thanks for the complement. There are others in the Diner who deserve praise too. .... Your comment about Germans not accepting the 928 are funny to me. I wonder why they complained about Audi parts. Audi is high quality. .... The 1984 Porsche 928s was the fastest car available in the US car market in that model year. It has a 4.7 L V8. It can go 145 mph, but I won't get even close to that ... This car looks good in the photos, but there are a lot of small scratches in the paint surface. .... The leather interior must be completely replaced. Evidently, this car spent many long hot summer days parked under a very hot sun. The leather is ruined. ... Most of the mechanical stuff is okay, but I did replace a very expensive radiator. There is more mechanical work to do.

JohnBoy ... I'm glad to hear about progress with your layout. Looks like you have a lot more fun projects.

Bear .... Thanks for posting more videos

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual gargantuan cup of coffee with copious  amounts of cream, please.

Just a short note before work.  Translation, I don't have anything to contribute.

Big Smile

We finally have some warmer weather, going to have some rain during the week. It would be nice if the Sierras could get some more moisture.  The drought out in CA is pretty serious.

I've heard that the B&O had water scoops under their tenders and water troughs between the track so the train could take on water without stopping.  We could make water troughs fed by Lake Michigan, or the lake of your choice, and whole unit trains could fly by at 80 mph and load whole trains full of water to go straight out to fill the California reservoirs.  Oh, fuel?  Hadn't thought of that.

I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Gidday Chloe, a hot chocolate before bed will go down just fine, please.
Garry  and Rob , as long as ffolkes are enjoying them I’ll keep trying to post interesting footage, speaking of which, while this first one mentions trains it is more of a travellers advisory...
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD-Ml7mMXBg

Now when I came across this next clip I immediately thought of Galaxy and the Celtic Festival he’s mentioned. Even though we’re a  member of the British Commonwealth apart from a few early locomotives , we never adopted the British practice of naming engines, apart from  the first of the 4-6-2 Pacific Ab Class Ab608, and has been recently restored, who as a memorial to the Railway staff who fell in WW1 was called “Passchendaele”.
The attack by the New Zealand Division on the 12th October 1917 on  Passchendaele as part the Third Battle of Ypres was the Blackest Day in New Zealands history in the terms of lives lost in a single day.

Now if I appear to have an overabundance of clips featuring the 4-8-2 Ja or variants, please just consider my avatar.Smile, Wink & Grin

Good Morning, Folks!

The wind has changed over the night from northeasterly winds to southwest. That means warmer air coming our direction, but also lots of clouds. So we are in for our typical "Schietwedder"!

My back is telling me to go easy today, so I will take a rest from MRRing - maybe just a little bit of soldering. I did a bit of that yeterday afternoon, without getting my fingers burned - that´s an achievement!

last mountain & eastern hogger
Ulrich, so glad to see you are feeling well enough to try your hand at some mrring. You always make it look so easy and yet the product turns out so professional. You are very skilled.

Far from, Garry, far from! The pictures don´t show the areas where I goofed. Doesn´t make me happy, but I am not sad, either. I have decided to take things the way I am able to do them. After all, this is fun and not a race. Whatever the layout turns out to be, it´ll be good enough for me.

Talking of layouts, there are some corners I am not sure about how to do them. Medieval town used every square inch to put up some kind of dwellings. The question not yet solved is how to link the gate to the row of houses in the back. I´d need some kind of a corner building, which is not available. More thinking to come...

Jim - good to see you here! I thought you were busy, but it has been a long time without a smoke signal from your side. Made my worry a little. I now wonder what Chris is doing these days?

Garry  - nice looking 928S. This particular car was not really popular in its days here in Germany - for two reasons:

  • The engine was not air-cooled
  • The engine was in the front

When Porsche released the car, there was an outcry in the Porsche drivers community. To top it off, Porsche used Audi parts in it, which made it a no no to buy. It was a good car, though, and I think its design is still good looking now.

Well, I am off - there is a HD list waiting for me!

Whistling

G'd Evening Gang,

Zoe, For a bed time snack I could sure use a couple of croussants with lots of whipped cream and a H.C.  Thanks.

Jeremy,  I don't like the sound of that (what you are telling us ). You be sure to follow that right through as that is nothing to trifle with. Good luck on Tuesday and don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion as that is your life they are dealing with.

Cape Jim,  Glad to see you back on board here even though we do correspond occasionally, Sure would like to see you get those Shays running, and hope you got a great bed to replace the one you threw out the window.

Garry,  Great looking ride there, swing by sometime and I'll buy you an RBF at the nearest A&W.

Ray, I don't think there is one amoung us that could keep up with you in all of your responsibilities.  BTW.  the house looks great.

Ulrich, so glad to see you are feeling well enough to try your hand at some mrring. You always make it look so easy and yet the product turns out so professional.  You are very skilled.

Barry,  Glad to hear your weather got better and you are feeling good enough to get out there and get things done.  I really like the BBQing idea.  Wish it would work for my throat,  and I would make a trip to your place and Ken's.

Ken,  What have you decided to do about the pump filter??

I have done a litttle more work on the elevated station.  I cut out enough rolled roofing last evening to pave the whole lot around it and the street leading up to it.  The Backside of rolled roofing is what I use for my asphalt. I also got a bit futher with the depressed center flat car & load.. Some bracing and paint for the wheel chokes which would be steel in this case because of the weight now to figure out how to tie this monster mine truck down.   I have some scale chain, but there looks like there is no place to fasten it to. Maybe just go underneth it and CA it in place.

I have not started the second Downtown Deco building yet, out of that set of seven, but it is on my work list to start soon.

So thats it for tonight. I start back to work tomorrow with a split shift that I agreed to. wish I hadn't now, but Oh well this to shall pass.

Night all and sleep well.

Keep smiling even when you are snoring.    ZZZZzzzzZzz

My doctor doesn't know what it may be.ni have been on some heavy duty pain pills all weekend and about a hour ago I was woken up ( went to be early ) with a intense pain in my head again. I already text my boss and told him I won't be in tomorrow.

i have a appointment on Tuesday so hopefully we can get this worked out. All weekend I have had the feeling of my head in a vice

Evenin' Folks!

Janie, just a refill for the decaf please....

Been a long and somewhat productive day here.  I moved three wheelbarrow loads of of the old concrete decorative wall blocks to out back of the shed to use for a couple added raised beds in the garden.  Managed to get some meetings lined up to get some work done for the convention (Having a Name Tag Laminating Party which will also be a chance to make a list of what still needs to get done).  Spent all evening working on the list for donors for the MLK Scholarship Fund.  They get to have their names published in the Dinner Program so I had to print out the Excel Spreadsheet of all the donations and update the list in this years program.  The dinner is just 3 days after the convention so I really need to get as much done on it now as possible or I will never get it done and printed in time.

Jim!  Good to see you back in the diner.  You've been missed!  Also good to hear you have a new job that you are going to enjoy...  Bedbugs....  Yuck!  I have heard the only way to be sure they are gone is to put a heater in the room and seal all the openings.  Then raise the temperature in the room above 115°F (IIRC) which will kill them.  I guess they have become immune to most of the pesticides that used to be used on them...

I have to get up a bit early tomorrow for a fasting blood draw...  Fun!  I will then treat myself to breakfast over at Water Street Café in Geneva.  Yep, I will be having the #2 Special, over easy eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of Sour Dough toast!  The heck with the blood sugar for tomorrow.... Laugh

Have a great evening, be safe, and my prayers to all in need!

The House Dinner Special, please & thank you.

***Bear, I'm enjoying the New Zealand vids. Keep 'em coming if you have more.CoolThumbs Up New Zealand is such a beautiful country. My family loved their visit. Unfortunately, I did not make the trip back then and have never been there myself.

Still haven't taken the time to test run the new little 0-4-0. Extra busy with farm fencing projects.

Have a good night all.

Good Evening, Chloe - I'll have a RBF please. It got warm here in my area today (all the way to 83 F).

Sorry for my absence in the Diner (as they say, "in, like, forEVER!"). Since I was last here, I've dealt with a bedbug plague (think most all of them are gone now, after getting some spray from the farm supply store and tossing my way-too-old bed & bedding into the dumpster), changing jobs (now at an agency where I get to do actually therapy Big Smile). I was able to change jobs in part due to getting fairly decent tax refunds, as well as my having given notice enough ahead that I got back about two months of my ETO [earned time off, which I hadn't used much of while I was there]). Now, so long as I get my client appointments up to full-time before my backup funds run dry... My hours are more afternoon/evening now (people have this strange thing about not wanting to take off work, so) - my earliest appointment was 2:00 p.m., and my latest one ends at 8 p.m.

Not much progress on the layout, however. Embarrassed But that hasn't stopped me from getting some printed background flats and various roofs from KingsMill Enterprises (they have a sale the rest of the month - and nope, I don't work for them). I have three MDC 2-truck Shays around (and I don't think any of them are 'ready-to-run yet; gearing slippage mostly), and (if I had and took the time, there're four GP9's needing decoders installed, and to be painted in the CAW colors.

Hope you other Diners have been able to get more done on your MRR'ing (Ulrich, I saw that you've still been busy with your layout & doing well, as is your usual!). And that those having sleeping difficulties are able to get more Zzz than you've reported recently. AngelAngel for those in need of healing, rest, andor comfort, and a good night to all of you (except say, Ulrich, who's into the morning already!).

Blessings and a good evening,

Jim in Cape G.

Good Evening

Well, BBQ is done and we now have something of a garden set up. Got the tulips coming up, the Daffodils are out as well as the Hyacinth and Crocuses.

Audrey is untangling the little Springs toys...lol. He has just been playing with them, knocking them around, doing backflips and leaping/jumping/standing up with his paws clutching them...for a 17 yr old cat he is quite the little kitteh...lol!!!

Catch y'all later!!!

Good Evening Folks!

The day started nice and bright, but with a strong wind, which brought lots of clouds in the early afternoon. It started to ra*n about and hour ago.

With nothing better to do, I started to lay the track on my little layout. solder the feeder wires to the rails and cut & glued the PCB ties at the module ends. I had to stop as my back started yelling insults at me - Jeff said that a number of times. Now I am going to watchg a few stream movies before hitting the hay.

Ray - your house is looking nice again! I have never seen contractors cleaning up the mess they made - yours must have been special ones!

I see Todd dropped by - good! Any news from CapeJim?

Happy noontime folks!

Just some fresh fruit and more coffee for me for lunch Chloe.

I have already done a couple hours of stuff for the convention this morning and started to move the fancy concrete blocks from the raised bed garden by the side of the house to out back in the garden.  I am removing the old raised bed garden and plan to add to the blacktop area to help with water run off there.  The blocks will be used for two additional small raised beds back there for herbs.  I will transplant part of the huge oregano plant and the chives to start with.

Garry, by midweek those same trees will be full of leaves.  I have noticed a lot come out just in the last 24 hours...  We are right at normal for up here in the Northland of the Finger Lakes.

Todd, The ceiling guy said about the same about the swirl design and that on the slanted ceiling it would be much harder to put in.  I told him I really don't care what design is used, but do want something other than plain drywall up there.  Tomorrow I'll try to get some pics.

Jerremy, I too have a few too many burns.  Had to have two precancerous spots removed a few weeks ago at the dermatologist.  I am not supposed to be outside now without some heavy duty sunscreen on.  She does want me to lay shirtless out there for the psoriasis though....  Go figure?

Another beautiful day here in the Finger Lakes today.  At noon it is 74°F and the high in an hour or so will be 78°F.  I soon will be turning on the air conditioning for the first time this season (want to make sure it is working more than anything else).

I plan to spend more time getting some gardening done and checking the computer for more stuff that needs my attention for the convention or the MLK Dinner every time I take a break...  Later!

Good Morning

Well, as one who was outdoors almost all day doing gardening and BBQing yesterday I do not look like a lobster here. It is called sunscreen, lol.

Sunny and a high near 75F today...another gardening day here.

As for trees, well Whistling, they are still not much in the leaf department but the Maples are getting the buds. But, as well, we are seeing a sure sign of Spring here. The Red-Wing Blackbirds are here. And my daily nemesis, the Great Blue Heron that I cannot get a decent photo of, is flyinig right by our house...Whistling

As I noted earlier, gonna go and do some more gardening, and then another BBQ is in the offing. We went out earlier to get a good walk in and seen all sorts of flowers out ....

Chloe, I'll have a 18 egg omelette with a coupla tubfulls of poutine and a big ol' helping of 50 cup urn boot coffee please...Mischief Dinner

Hi Guys

Just a beuatuful day yesterday and today. I cant belive how many people I saw walk by that are sun burned already, I was out for a bit yesterday and got a little sun. I like a bit of sun but no way do I try to get burned on purpose. I know it has been a long cold winter but. I have seen the scary effects of skin cancer when the wife was going through treatments and wouldnt wish that on anybody. I was talking to my neighbour and he had a sunburn so bad yesterday he was blistering Indifferent He says it will be a nice tan later on Zip it! and its only May 3.

Ooops. Off by a day. Oh well Ray sounds like it doesn't matter anyway. You changed your mind. The Starburst may be what we call a "stomped" ceiling. I guess it kinda looks like starbursts. Glad to hear you had minimal surprises too.

I just noticed that the leaves came out here over the past week.  We still have some bare trees, but those are always late anyway.

Suddenly we got some warm, nice weather.  I will be on my bicycle more frequently now.  The wife signed us up for a matinee concert in Boston this afternoon, but I think tomorrow will be perfect for a road ride.

Mornings are still pretty chilly, though, so I'll have another cup of coffee and then go up to the train room and glue down some more track.

Gooooood Morning!!!

And happy May…um..the 3rd. Yeesh. Gonna be September by the end of the week.

Just coffee for me please. I already had left over Cheesy Dogs from the big garage sale yesterday.

Welcome Matt

I have to agree with Ken on the best looking cars of all. Those Chargers were art. Though I like the ’70 Roadrunner, I must admit I think the ‘69’s are the best looking

Ray- Maybe a bit late, but think about the swirl pattern for your ceiling. I have one and the way it’s overlapped it is nigh on impossible to repair without doing most the ceiling. Had to do over, I’d a stomped it. Swirled looks great and you may never have to repair, but….never know. Get a leak, crack in a seam or a nail pop.. (though most use screws, some will still use nails around the walls. Why? Don’t know.)..and you have to start on one side of the room and work over to the other. Or at least it seems so

Took 3 truckloads of junk to the Township garage, one of which was that bunch of wood and trim I just needed to save because I could use it again, BUT, I can get to the wall area in the trainroom!!!Yeah Progress I tell ya, progress. Today I have to haul a couple more loads of junk for a friend.

Plenty to do today and a door to replace at the restaurant tomorrow so….

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

I see Ulrich hoped we would visit the Puffing Billy Railway which is actually in Victoria, Australia, but as the cost of travelling half way round the world is not inconsequential, it would be churlish not to organise a quick flit across “The Ditch”, so welcome on board......
And here we are, enjoy.......
Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

FOr those in need:

Healing energies,

2. A bone. [plural ossa]

Judy Jarvis; Arctic Monkeys: Neo-Punk Exuberance With an Accent; Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster, Pennsylvania); Feb 9, 2006.

“Naturally, the students couldn’t resist testing the teachers’ knowledge. ‘You’d better slow down,’ they would tell some unsuspecting pedagogue, ‘or you might fall and break your os.’”

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Eat hearty, but nothing low fat, if you please.

Sorry, can't do that...  I have a blood draw on Monday! Whistling

Janie, just another cup of decaf please.

Today the folks arrived to put up a plaster design on the living room ceiling.  I think I decided on the Starburst pattern.  I wanted a swirl but the guy didn't recommend doing that on the inclined ceiling and recommended the starburst.  So that's what I went with....  I haven't been out there to see it yet, but will check it out on Monday when the contractor paints the ceiling.  By the end of next week I should have the room back!  Carpeting will be done either on Tuesday or Wednesday.  I will need to go over and pay for the carpet Monday.

Here is what got finished yesterday:

I am slowly getting everything lined up for the convention...  I hope!  All the clinics are lined up, the layout tours are ready to go, the program booklet is almost ready to be OKed (been waiting on a couple advertisers who hadn't sent the copy for their ads), My second in command has provided GPS readings for all the layout tours and has been putting together the Silent Auction sheets for the 71 items we have for the auction...  I have printed up most of the name tags and hope to get a couple people to have a laminating party to get them all assembled sometime next week.  Still have to get a list of who is watching over the Hospitality Room (Sponsored by Fast Tracks) and even who is picking up all the goodies and making the coffee supply...  Also need signs made directing people to registration and such.....

I guess I have worried enough for one day so,  I'll see you all in the morning.

Stay safe and have a great night!

We'll get there sooner or later!

Galaxy: My favorite quote with the word I'd (sorry, my iPad just wouldnt let me spell I'd) in it is from Forbidden planet, in which the starship's doctor says, "Beware of monsters, monsters from the id!"

I could not let this pass.  I remember Forbidden Planet as one of my favorites as a young boy.  Who could not like it, with shipwrecked sailors on an island with a magician, a monster and his beautiful daughter?  Oh, sorry, that's Shakespeare's "The Tempest," and this movie had shipwrecked astronauts on a planet with a scientist, a robot an a beautiful daughter.  Did you think West Side Story was the only update of The Bard?

Ulrich, I love that old building flat.  Painted up, and perhaps with a few dummy walls around it, I see it as a fine centerpiece for a village square with a train running through the scene.

Forbidden Planet starred Leslie Nielson.  At that time, no one would have dreamed of calling him "Shirley."

Hmmm... my turn at the top.  Eat hearty, but nothing low fat, if you please.

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a glass of red wine, please.

Galaxy:  My favorite quote with the word I'd (sorry, my iPad just wouldnt let me spell I'd) in it is from Forbidden planet, in which the starship's doctor says, "Beware of monsters, monsters from the id!"

Ken:  Is that a scale size billboard picture of Albert Einstein in the picture?

Ulrich:  That's a neat little mock up you have there.  I really like the building flats.

Great to finally have some warm weather.

I hope everyone is, OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!
