Afternoon guys

spent the morning getting out the bike tools and bike stand.in the winter my workshop is set up for just model railroading but from spring to fall it has to share some space with my bike and stand and associated tools. It's a little cramped in there but everything is organized and in its spot. If I am working on a model railroad project I can move the bike out to the basement as it sits right in front of the bench. I'm hoping Friday I can get the first ride of the year in

Hey diners,

It's been a windy and cloudy day with the sun popping out here and there. I washed the dog today and he didn't want to listen to me when he got dirty on our walk. Pretty sure a boring day, and Galaxy I do understand take some rest from the internet and get life back together.

Good Afternoon Diners,

just a quick note.  Taking a short break while MOH is on the phone with her sister.

Galaxy: good to have you back.  Some of us were a little concerned.  Thoughts like "Galaxy's MOH, having disposed of the body......" Came to mind.

tried to make a very weak attempt at quotes, but not to good.

well, back to work.

i hope everyone is OK, safe and warm.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe a cup of hat chocolate would be great right now.

Church this morning was the Confirmation class (high School Kids) putting on the worship.  They did a great job.  Great bunch of young people to a one!  I just got done putting away groceries.  Have a 90¢ discount when the PiP needs fossilized Dinosaur Dung next.  Today have been a mix of cloudy and bright sun.

Galaxy, glad you stopped in.  Yes, we were a bit worried about you!  Hope your counciling (all kinds) goes well for you.  Stop in when you feel the urge...

Barry great on the solar panels!  They are great to have for many reasons...

MisterBeasley
and had an automatic, as all good family cars should.

What?  Who says?  I have only owned two vehicles with the super-sloppy transmissions.  Got rid of the first one after 6 months.  Hated it!!!  Absolutely terrible (Dodge Pickemup truck).  I was driving 4 speeds on the floor when I was 7 years old (and those you had to double clutch to down shift).  At eight I had mastered the old dodge pick up with its 3 on the column and all the cars.  My late wife, both my sons, even my sisters, all prefered 4 or 5 on the floor.  My sister in Canandaigua wouldn't buy an automatic because she doesn't think she could learn to drive something that complicated..... WhistlingLaugh  When I first test drove the PiP (Electronic CVT), I stomped my left foot on the floor several times, turned to the salesman and asked, "Where the HECK is the clutch?!?"  He knows me , so he just scowled at me and kept quiet.  Family car.... Sheesh!

Yesterday I finally hooked up a bunch of tow ropes and tie downs and used my old Come-along to straighten up the mailbox post.  Cut a couple wedges to drive in the ground to hold it in place out of some old treated 2 x 4 stock I had.  Took off the come-along and ropes today after church.

I may be heading over to my son's house in a bit.  They are ordering out for supper tonight and told me to come over.  DIL is taking Granddaughter #1 (I think) on a field trip with her Girl Scout Troop someplace nearby this afternoon...  I'l be waiting to hear from them.

Catch you all later!

Yeah, Ray, I know.  But this was also to be my Mom's car.  She was in her 50s, and honestly, she never learned to drive a car, only operate one.  A standard would have been too much.  I should note in passing that my car at this point was a Triumph Spitfire.  I literally had never driven a standard until I drove it out of the dealership.

When I pass from this earth, if Saint Peter hands me the keys to my 75 MGB, I will know I'm in Heaven.  On the other hand, if I get the yellow Pontiac Sunbird station wagon, well, then I'm headed for the hot basement.  If it makes it that far.

Hi Gang,

Who is working the Sunday evening shift ?  Oh, it must be Brunhilda as those are German or Bavarian smells coming from the kitchen.   Well surprise me, a large plate of whatever you've got simmering out there. Tonight I'll have a diet Pepsi as well.

Talking of cars we miss >>> mine is my 55 Chev convertable, I have kicked myself many times for trading it off.  It was silver metallick with a black top and a red & white interior. I had a lot of fun in that car.  It just had a 283.

Galaxy, I'm with the rest of the crew here and am glad you checked in and OK.  Don't be a stranger, we appreciate you here.

Ulrich,  keep plugging away at getting yourself better. Don't be afraid to go to a Naturalpath as well and get a different point of view and maybe a healthier cure than all the stuff the Big Pharms are putting out.

My Wife just dropped a newspaper over my shoulder and said I should read this article.>> It is pretty interesting, it is about and Artist/cartoonist who sets all his stories in a ficticious place called Dominion City, which in turn he has built over the years as a cardboard model.  Like most of us, he admits that it will never really be finished. He says he builds about six buildings a year and wishes he could build sixty. He only uses household items to build with and most of it is just different kinds of cardboard.  It is pretty impressive and it is good enough to be on a cross Canada tour right now and is in Regina for a while, so I will try to get to see it.   If you are interested to see more, just google  'www.Seth, Dominion City'  and that should pull up his page.    Enjoy.

Well I finished my first Hydrocal building (Downtown Deco)  which was supposed to be a two story Beverage plant, but to me it just didn't work as that. One thing was there was no loading area, no frieght door or dock. So I decided to change it in to something that I thought really suited the structure and that was a smoke shop or tobacconist.  I called it "Kaw-liga's Cigars"  After that old song Kaw-Liga was a wooden Indian standing at the door, who fell in love with an Indian Maid over at the antique store.  So now my focus will have to be finding a figure of an Indian Chief with Head dress to stand at the front door.  Will try and get a pix on here soon.

Think that's all I got for tonight.  It's been rainy here and very cool, just above freezing but still better off than 150 miles north of here as they got 12" on snow again.

Prayers and best wishes for all who stand in need.

Keep smiling, it takes less muscles that a frown.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Johnboy, I turned an old Plasticville kit into a cigar store.

The figure is a Preiser model, I believe.  I painted him dark brown to turn him to wood.  I think he needs to be on some sort of pedestal.  As I recall, there is a full-headdress figure available now, which would be a better choice.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual extra large cup of coffee with an abundant amount of cream, please.

Well Diners, baseball season is underway, which means summer and warm weather is on the way, Yay!  Tis the season for home improvements and planting gardens, neither of which I'm good at.  Changing a sink faucet can be an entire afternoon project for me.

When I was young, I always wanted a Ferrari.  Now, even if I could afford one, I don't think I'd buy one.  (What's next to you on the freeway.)

Quote for the day, sort of..

"All these places have their meaning, with people and friends, I still recall.  i know I'll often stop and think about them, in my life, I've loved them all". -Lennon, McCartney

i hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

I went to the club yesterday and worked on three freight cars so,they will meet my "derailment and troublefree" standards. These three cars was troublesome the last  time I used them.I'll start my inspection and if needed RIP of my cars week after next-no meeting next sunday due to the dog show.

I shall have a cup and look over the forums..

Nicotine is definitely a product of the Dark Side.

Thursday I part with a tooth.  I will be getting an implant to replace it, as it's the last one in the back and the two that used be behind it have already gone.  I'm not looking forward to this.  It's kind of a long process, as Doctor Cynthia needs to build up bone first to hold the implant.

Yesterday, I gave up on the idea of using IR LEDs and cross-the-tracks IR phototransistors for detectors for my crossing gates.  I installed a couple of the between-the-rails visible/IR detectors a bit further up the rails, so I only need one detection point instead of having them on multiple tracks.  I still need to add a bit of supplemental lighting, but these should do the job for now.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a cup of marrakesh Express dark roast coffee (and make another pot please) and a couple glazed sour cream doughnuts for dunking please.

Barry is correct about today so far.  Dark and gloomy and dull here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  I need 58 kWh of electricity in the next 4 days to equal what I got in April last year.  Luckily 3 of the 4 days will have some sun that should push the total over the line.  Today will be around 10 to 12 kWh most likely.  I've gotten so I can guess pretty acurately.

Already done a couple hours work sitting here at the computer this morning.  I will be very glad when the Convention is over!  Still have what appears to be a couple months worth of stuff to do in the next couple weeks to get ready for it....

MisterBeasley

Mr. Beasley, you are quite right....  Reminds me of way back early in my career when I used to smoke pipe and cigars...  We could smoke in the teachers room back them.  One of the 5th. grade teachers who had a really nasty attitude (her father was a local MD and her busy body Mother got herself elected to the School Board so she could screw everything up whenever possible) used to light up s soon as she finished lunch much to the consternation of the rest of us.  She would often sit right across from me (letting me know why Music Class was a complete waste of time except to give her a break) and blow the smoke in my face.  One day I took out a cigar, and in spite of her threats lit up and blew the cigar smoke right at her face!  She started swearing and grabbed her stuff and left the teachers's room whereupon I put the cigar out.  I got a standing ovation from all the other teachers!  The idiot 5th. grade female dog stopped lighting up after that as every time she pulled out a cigarette I pulled out a cigar!!!  Hope the dental surgery goes well for you!

Best get myself back to w*rk!

Good Afternoon!

A dull day here as well. At least the ra*n stopped!

I did not catch much sleep last night - my usual insomnia! When I went for a short nap after lunch, the bloke who´s taking care of the premises here started to mow the weeds lawn. It had grown to a considerable height during the past btwo weeks and the mower could hardly cope with it. That noise took care of my attempted sleep! I finally got up and decided to run a train over my make-shift layout, which I thoroughly enjoyed! My stomach seems to relax a little now - I was able to eat something without it showing up again after 10 minutes.

Kato is releasing an addition to the famous RhB Glacier Express train into the market these days It´ll be the new RhB EMU´s named "Allegra". Althhough they are actually narrow gauge trains, they´ll run on regular N scale track, but can be re-gauged to the correct 6.5mm track. A friend of mine will be starting a layout, using Rokuhan Z scale track. I volunteered to develop the layout idea for him, which will keep me busy in the next days. It´ll be closely based on the actuall track plan of either the Ospizio Bernina station or the Alp Grüm station.

Ospizio Bernina (and Allegra):

Alp Grüm:

Enjoy!

My model railroad friend, Bill from Paducah, has one. He sometimes visits with his red car to see the three layouts here at the lake.. ..... Left to right; Bill, Me, Dan, Gus.  ... This is an older photo, and I lost a bit of weight since then.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Had a faily long post going last night and then my fat finguers hit the wrong button! Bang Head

Electrial Question. OK, I still need to get some kind of flitering going on in the swamp / in ground pool. Cannot afford the surprise of a $500.00 + power bill by using the old and seems to be not working 1 HP pool fliter. Plus I have not ran the pool fliter for 7 years, because of the cost.

I have been thinking about either a 1/4 HP or a 1/2 HP above ground sand filter just to keep the stink down. Not wanting to use it just clean it up some.

I saw this Gas Generator in a Harbor Freight flyer and was wondering?

 http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engine-generators/6500-peak5500-running-watts-13-hp-420cc-generator-epa-iii-69672.html

I have no idea how much electrical power that really is. Any chances it might run a 1/4 to 1/2 HP electric motor?

Dream Car? Hum, when I the win Mega Millions I be hard torn to what the first car would be. It would be between the following.

 1 1969 Dodge Daytona

 2 427 AC Corba

I have ridden or drove both. 427 AC Corba was when I was 12 years old. My dad's friend raced a real A/C Cobra. I got to ride around IRP with Carol and remember being slamed back, forward, left, forward, right and back again! I wish I was just older, like 20 something.

Ahh, 1969 Dodge Daytona. I have worked on 3 and drove 2 of them. Way slower than the A/C and stock no faster than a stock 69 Charger. But I love the look. Sigh That is a good sigh I will add. Looks to me it is going 150 MPH sitting still.

AC will kick the Daytona butt in every way. But, I am a Mopar Guy at heart so it would be hard to pick unless I win say $80,000,000.00 then I have both! And then some more! Laugh

Couple of the Dodge Daytona I was worked on.

Charger in the left background is a real Hemi Charger I did with only 32,000 miles on it.

Mine when I was making Daytona clone. But at last, I got tired of wating on repop parts. Sold what I had and added a 6-71 blower! Big Smile

Ken,  I have run a twin stack air compressor and a couple of circular saws on a 6500/5500 watt generator.  My Canadian friends run a 1 hp air blower on the same size generator.  I have also run a construction sump pump with at least a half horsepower motor with same size generator.  The generator will burn through about 5 gallons of gasoline every 12 hours.

Gidday Chloe, just a cup of green tea please as I am on cooking duties tonight.  Her-in-doors and I have always had the arrangement that whoever is first home from w**k starts cooking tea (dinner). Fresh Green lipped mussels were on special at the supermarket in the weekend so tonights tea consists of nuking the leftovers from the previous two nights, Mussels and Blue Vein Cheese Sauce, and mussels in an Italian based tomato and green peas sauce, both served with spaghetti.  Two courses!!! Very posh!!
Jan, I’m afraid your reference to the ANZACs in Burma has got me scratching my head. After the Battle of El Alamein, the New Zealand Division continued serving as part of the British 8th Army ending their war with Germanys surrender in Trieste Italy, whereas the Australians returned to Australia to defend against the Japanese.
The Forgotten Army (the British 14th) who fought in Burma was mainly comprised of Indian Army troops, along with East and West African, and British troops.
The only Australians I can immediately think of in any number were POWs captured at the fall of Singapore and who along with other unfortunate Allied POWs and large numbers of locals were forced to work on the infamous Burma Railway.
On a lighter note a former workmate who, at the time, was an aircraft engineer in the RNZAF told us of when he was part of the aircrew that made the first Bristol Freighter supply run into Vietnam (1965??) and how at the sight of such an unusual beast, a member of the USAF actually fell of the wing of the aircraft he was servicing. I gather apart from a few bumps and bruises, he mainly suffered with hurt pride. I wonder if he lost balance from laughing so much.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Garry:  That looks like a 308 (Magnum PI car).  If so, those were one of the best designs ever.  I think that's why I also like Lamborghinis because of the designs. Anyway, I don't see either one of those in my future.

Ken: speaking of designs, those Daytonas are very sleek looking. If I remember correctly, Dodge and Plymouth used Roadrunner bodies as the basis for the Daytonas and Super Birds.  When I was a kid, I remember seeing Sterling Moss win the Grand Prix de Monaco on TV. It was my first introduction to the existence of Formula I.  Wow, racing through the streets of town. How cool!  I even laid out on paper a race course through my own home town with all of the twists and turms like Monaco.  Great fun.

Quote for the day:

"the bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."  -i don't remember who said this, if anyone, so I'll say Anonymous

i hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm

Less is more,...more or less!

Brrrrr.  Still in the 40s, with a brisk wind.  Again, it's not a day for bike riding, but since it's hockey night I wouldn't be doing that anyway.  Instead, I may take a drive to Home Depot for some 4-conductor telephone wire.  When I measured the distance from the second set of phototransistors back to the crossing gates, I found my supply of wire was short.  I hope they have the wire.  I'm not sure they even install phone wire in houses anymore.  Anybody know?

Yesterday, I spent an annoying hour and a half on the phone.  I had to call the TurboTax people because the state tax download just wasn't working, and the insurance company still hadn't gotten their act together with premium deductions from my pension account.  For both, I had to go through the endless phone menus with no applicable options.  Eventually, the insurance company offered a $50 credit for each of 3 policies for my troubles, and TurboTax forgot to bill me the $40 for the extra state package, so I suppose it was worth it.

Ken, are all those rear spoilers functional, or are they merely "car art."  As I recall, even at highway speed they have minimal effect.  Racing, yes, but would you race such a classic work of art?

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have my usual dark roast coffee and a couple sour cream glazed donuts this morning.

Sun is trying to shine at the moment....  The weather guessers are calling for partly for most of today, so we shall see what we shall see.

Jeez Ken!  What are you paying per kWh for electricity out there?  I am paying about 14¢ per kWh here and the highest tier where they have such a thing is about 35¢ I think.  $500 at 15¢ per kWh would buy you 3333 kWh of electricity.  Holy crap!  You need to turn off some lights!Confused  Before I put in the Solar Panels my average month use was 570 kWh.  At 12¢ per that would be $68.50...

Some math...  A .5 hp electric motter at full constant draw would use about .5 kWh per hour.  So if you run it 24 hours a day it should consume about 12 kWh a day.  That translates into 360 kWh a month.  Times 15¢ per it should cost about $43.20 a month to operate.  The monster back up generator you want to get at that load would use maybe 5 gal per day (that would be only 500 w draw for 24 hours a day...).  Gas engines are very inefficient when they are idling.  So at the current price of gas in Illanoyzy that would be $13 a day or $390 a month to clean the pool!  So yes the generator is obviously the best thing to get if you want to spend a lot of $$$.  It will also drive your neighbors nuts all night long..... Duh!  Use the grid!  I have to think you had a ground short somewhere in the old 1hp filter to cost that much to operate.  Maybe a bearing going bad or something.  Drawing way more power than it should have.

I best get to w*rk!  Catch you all later...

Gooooood Morning!!!

Just coffee in a to go cup please. Thank you.

Hope nothing major has happened to anyone since like page 10 as I had to skim quickly. I did see the news on Ulrich, I’m sorry for the last biopsy report but CHIN UP!!! They have made leaps and bounds of progress on these things so the outlook has never been better. Hopefully one day we won’t be giving these things any more of a thought than warts.Angel

All town clean up is this weekend so I’ve pulled Brendas’ car out of the garage and have begun to fill the spot with junk and rubbish for to haul away. And yes, I started with the train room and have said several times...Oh My Gosh, I didn’t think you could acquire that much stuff in one lifetime, let alone just a couple years. I really need to reacquaint myself with a disposal method. I don’t need to save everything. Some stuff ok, but not what I do. Or did.

Yard has been mowed three times so far and the outside needs are also being tended to. Keeping me pretty busy. Hope all stays or gets well for others!

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Oh and Mr B, in regards to the spoilers on the Daytonas/ Super Birds, they actually were functional. The wing on the back however didn't work very well though it did work to a degree. The race version worked well, but the street version had to be raised to allow the trunk lid to open fully so it was actually out of the "sweet spot" as they say. If you were to see the two side by side you can see the difference is very apparent.
