Good evening Zoe, a hot chocolate and an Anzac biscuit please.
Good Grief Frank, bringing heavy artillery to a Bear Hunt is dashed unsporting of you!!
YGW, well they do say don’t come between a mother and her cubs, I guess your late wife was like mine, very protective of the kids. Actually New Zealands only native land mammals are 3 species of small bats; rats, weasels and stoats were introduced unfortunately, so my only experience of large predatory animals has been at the zoo or TV wildlife documentaries. That said a friend of mine while living in Canada did come between a mother black bear and her cubs and had to beat a very hasty retreat!
Particularly enjoyed the Dutch/ Welsh layout clip Ulrich, just shows how international model railroading is.
I was disappointed to see that Barry has got snow again, especially as Ray had mentioned the possibility of 80 F the other day. I had hoped you chaps were going to start getting some decent doses of Vitamin D, while not wishing to diminish the health and other issues of some of the diner’s patrons; it has been a rather dismal place over your winter and, in my opinion, needs to reflect more of Jeffreys positivity.
As this photo taken today from my deck shows the trees are certainly getting their autumnal colouring, and while, apart from a cold snap last week, it is still shirt and shorts weather during the day, 66 F today, more sun and light must be coming your way.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual, please.

Day four and still no Galaxy.  Maybe he's in Perris, CA!

Ken:  you sound like me when it comes to talking about interior design.  Sometimes it's good to do a little soap box.  Gets that cardio-vascular workout going.

YGW:  only if the stripes and polka dots are directly adjacent to periwinkle and chartreuse plaids. Big Smile   It's actually more involved than that.  It's about licensing and public responsibility.  Some are in favor, some are against.

Well, I didn't look up a good quote so....

I'm ready, ready as anybody can be, I'm ready for you, I hope you're ready for me. -Mickinley Morganfield

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good morning. Woke up to frost on the ground this morning.  It was very cool in SE Ohio yesterday.

Second foundation water proofing contractor stopped yesterday.  He wanted to sell an inside basement system in the worst way.  Told him I had no interest whatsoever as it would not take care of the basic problem of water seeping through the block and leaching out the portland cement over time.  He understood where I was coming from and said that they have done exactly what I am looking for and would quote exterior waterproofing and drainage.  Don't know whether I can afford the fix.

On the railroad front, nailing down another stock rail for the second turnout in a wye and laying ties for the wye curve.  May need to stain more ties to finish the curve.

Ken, your Serta comment struck a nerve as we have a very good friend who is doing battle with Serta over a failed two year old mattress.  I can understand your frustration as mattress stores seem to pop up around here all the time.

Ulrich, the steam HOn3 loco is pretty amazing.  Pretty good pulling power considering the very small size and only four driver wheels.

Blown Cylinder, your snow probably explains why it has been so cold here in SE Ohio.

John Boy, hope your part of the world stays a little drier this spring versus the last couple of years.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.  Time for some rice crispies and toast.

Jim

Another day, another loud compressor outside.  We're having the house power-washed in preparation for painting.  I'm going to go to the bagel shop to get away from the noise.

Ken, every time I think about mattresses I think about the episode of Star Trek when Captain Picard and Data spend the night aboard a Klingon vessel.  Klingons, apparantly, sleep on a bed of solid granite, like a kitchen counter top.  My wife likes one of those.  She sleeps on her back, while I sleep on my side and I'm very uncomfortable on those "firm" granite models.  I've been known to pull the cushions off the couch and make a bed from them in hotels with Marquis de Sade mattresses.

Galaxy?  We are getting more concerned with each passing day.

Mornin' everybody!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Natur's Path Smart Bran with skim milk and a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dartk Raost coffee for my R&GV RR mug please...

Outside, when I first turned on the computer a couple hours ago, some really bright thing was lighting up the area!!!  I thought Whoooooa!  Sunshine!  Didn't last... 10 minutes later I couldn't see the house across the street due to something called a "Flurry"...  Right now the white stuff is moving sideways toward the South.  Currently 34°F outside (will get out the winter coat again) with a predicted possible high of 47°F later today.  Sigh

I have to be at the local Boys and Girls Club for the MLK Interviews by 2:30 today.  We only have 5 candidates this year.  All of them should get a scholarship from us as they are all excellent students and kids.  Doing a lot of good things in the community and making good choices for themselves.

Have about 3 days worth of stuff to get done today so I better get at it.  Wonder if I should be the first person on the block to mow my lawn?  Wonder what the neighbors would think to have me out mowing in the snowstorm.....

Last day of doctor-prescribed vocal rest. Voice is not what it once was, but it is not done healing. There is still a little discomfort when I swallow, but again, it is still healing. I have external bruises that are still tender so I have to remind myself the internal bruising is likewise still tender.

It's been 8 months since I played with Thomas, Gordon and Percy. (Bachmann HO, just in case you were thinking G.)

I do have HO track, I don't really play with my friends to much, but I would like to buy some more. I'm going to see if I make some room to play with them within an hour or so, but before I begin I need to get out track that's in the garage and make some room in the living room to exactly begin playing.

Cambus - You must have been really ill for the Hosp. to keep you a week. Me deceased wife had an organ removed ( Gall bladder) and they tried to send her home the same day ! She was so ill that I stood in the way and told them in no uncertain terms she was staying. Glad you are out and better ! Sounds exciting about the new train digs !

Garry - My apologies on two fronts. Please forgive me for forgetting to wish your bride Happy Birthday also and you were ( of course ) right on the car. I stand corrected.

Ken - sounds like the manufactures have gotten greedy. Also possible the contracts protecting an area has expired and teh mattress manufatures have decided not to renew. You are in a bad position if that is the case.

JaBear - Stoats what is that ? Is the photo in your post your home ? Are all of teh roofs there metal ? Here in this area we use "Asphalt shingles which are impreganted with "gravel" ?

UP831 - Chartreuse ? Dont think I know that fellow is he french ? Whistling Public responsibility ? Oh I can just see it know " Mrs. Polka Dot, do you know why we pulled you over ? Your dots were sashaying in Chartreuse and causing eye malfunctions !" Please come with me we have to take you down town to the fashion police station. Laugh

Mr. B - You may appreciate this. A few years ago I was laid off. During that period at night I used to dream about being back in construction. I would smell the smells, hear the noise, compressors , generators, heavy equipments etc... that sounded like a beautiful symphony to me !

Howmus - IF YOU DO  go mow in the snow I want a picture of THAT ! Oh my gosh that would be insanely funny !!!

Brake - It would be really neat if you were to add a real light in there vs. just a fake one.

Went to the mailbox yesterday and guess what I recieved ? My NMRA magazine AND my new NMRA shirt - oh happy day ! Now this eveing when I am relaxing I can wear my new favorite shirt and read the new magazine. What a glorious afternoon its gonna be. Just eight more days until we settle Big Smile

Gotta get back to w**K prayers for all in need and here is a special one for GalaxyAngel

Ah, the 68 Galaxie.  My FIRST brand new car, except mine was more of a gold color (my boss called it "cat scoures brown").  That's a fastback XL model by the way, distinguished by the cast aluminum grille, vacuum operated headlight covers.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, another Beer please.

Wasted Day Off, guess I just sleep badly and was tired all day. Only thing I got done was paying bills and buying Med's for my self and Sparkie The Rocket Dog.

Work Front Even on my day off I have to deal with it. Idiot Dave (X Manager) is off vactaion as of today and should have been at are St Charles store today at 10:00 AM. Want to guess who did not show up for work? Whistling Kamrom want to know if I could work today, but I had to many things to do.

Ken - sounds like the manufactures have gotten greedy.

YGW Not the fault of the manufactures but the U.S. public and the economy! In the 30's, 40's, 50 and 60 quailty is what consumers where looking for. Now it is prices, the lower the better! With you being in construction do you think a house built in 1920 is better built than in 2015? Now I'am not talking about insulation or technically but is skill and quality of material's?

 Later, Ken

Well playing with my Thomas and friends today didn't pan out so well. I had track all over the living room in different directions with only two switch tracks. Which I had to get up and sit down a lot if anything happened. In which case it did, with Gordon and his three express coaches.

After a lot of derailing I decided to call it quits. I couldn't watch them neither because the stuff was blocking the view.

I had two other HO Scale layouts (ATSF, UP) but Thomas has lasted longer, but I still enjoy them when I have the urged.

Nothing makes me happier than playing with N Scale.

Early start this morning as her-in-doors and myself attended the Dawn parade for ANZAC Day, Australia’s and New Zealand’s remembrance day for our fallen military. This year had a special significance as it marked 100 years since the landing by ANZAC troops at Gallipoli and the turnout was at least twice as many as last year, lots of young families with grand or great grandparent’s medals. It was a beautiful clear morning, the Southern Cross high in the sky, the steam from the hot pools drifting over, and then the sun rising over the hills, and reflecting off the calm lake.
So as it is part of ANZAC Day tradition, Chloe would you please administer a tot of Navy Rum to all who would like to join me in toasting those who served.
YGW. A stoat is a type of weasel.
While not in the building trade I’d say that most of the roofs are either of “corrugated iron” or pressed steel tiles, with a smattering of the concrete tiles, there are two such. roofed houses next door to me. I was surprised to see that US asphalt shingles are apparently available. If I were to replace or plan a new roof I’d personally use long run corrugated Coloursteel. My great grandfather and grandmother in front of a thatched roof sod cottage 1908(?)
You asked a while back how was New Zealand affected by WW2 and I only got round to giving you Part 1 of my answer. I have recently remembered this documentary which though it also includes Australia, explains things a lot better than I could. It has been uploaded in parts.
Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

EDIT: as I'm top please ensure a good supply of ANZAC biscuits for the diners to chew on while they have their tot.Big Smile

Good Morning

Whereupon we see clouds, a bit of sun and more wind...and a high of 50F

Going to see a few more people show up for another OP session, and see Spring schmooze some of them, lol.

So far the OP sessions had no incidents, accidents, no show turnouts, burnouts, meltdowns, or other disasterous terms...

Another cold morning, low 40s.  Nighttime temperatures are very close to freezing, and when I look at the weather radar there's snow not too far away.  What's wrong with this picture?

Happy ANZAC Day to our friends on the other side of the globe.  While our own Memorial Day holiday marks a somber occasion, it is, after all, still a holiday, and we typically treat it as the unofficial first day of summer, with cookouts and the opening of swimming pools.  Since most holidays really go back to pagan roots anyway, it seems more appropriate to lift one's spirits while lifting a chilled mug or two.

Good morning.

Bear .... Intersting about ANZAC Day. Hope you enjoyed the tradional rum. Thanks for the biscuits.

YGW ... Thanks for the b'day greetings for Shelley. No need to apolgize about the '68 Ford photo. Hope your new house is a great one ofr you. Is your new layout completed yet? LOL

Gary Weighmaster .... Sounds like you had a nice car back then. I had a '62 Chevy Impala convertible in the '60's.

Galaxy did not reply to my PM a couple of days ago, and I still assume he is without the internet.

Last night we went with neighbors to Patti's Retaurant in Grand Rivers, KY. We celebrated 3 b'days including Shelley's. Also, my good model railroad friend, Gus, has his brithday today. The other birthday was the wife of another model rairlaod friend here at the lake, Dan.

Later today, another model railroad friend will be visiting from Iowa. Hopefully, Mr. Murphy is absent.

Mornin' Everyone!

Zoe, I'll hvae a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend dark roast coffee to start the day.  Yes my R&GV RR mug thank you.

We are having a massive solar spill here in the Finger Lakes today!!!  That means it is a nice day outside.  Should translate into a super day for making electric for me. Need to get 100 kWh yield over the next 6 days to equal what they made last year.  Very doable I think if the weather co-operates....  May have close to 30 kWh of that just today.  Currently 42°F going up to 54° this afternoon.

The contractor is here this morning working on the outside the living room.  He has his Dad working for him today.  They have the new window ready to install and are putting in the rest of the new sheathing on the outside.  Got a few photos already this morning and will get more later.

I will be spending most of the day putting together a file to be able to print out Nametags for the Convention.  Also need to get materials together for part of a news article for the Local newspaper (Finger Lakes Crimes, er, Times...) about this years recipients of the Martin Luther King Scholarship Scholarships.  Great bunch of young people I might add!

Got my car assignment this morning for the LA&L 50th. Anniversary Train Excursions.  I will one of two Car Hosts in Coach #3.  These cars are the NYC Empire Express coaches put in service on December 7, 1941.  (Speaking of Important days to remember...)  They were the best and most comfortable coaches to ever be in service at that time.  The R&GV RR Museum has reconditioned these cars and has made them ready to be used in service for excursions.  The museum works in co-operation with the LA&L (which we interchange with) to do them a couple times a year.  More about the excursion can be found here: http://rgvrrm.org/LAL50/  Here is a photo from a couple years ago.  Motive power will be the LA&L's beautiful Alco Century units.

I better get myself into w*rk mode if I am to get anything done today...  Later!

Afternoon Everyone!

Knock, knock - the door slowly opens with a screeching noise. A big fella limps into the place, quietly sitting down at the RC, signalling Flo to bring him a mug of chamomilla tea.

DO I feel miserable! Those meds really put me onto my knees. The moment I eat something I feel like bringing it up again Ick!. Doc says there is nothing we can do about it, it is supposed to be that way. A cure that makes you feel even more sick than before?

Petra is trying to cheer me up, but it does not work well. For someone feeling sick in his stomach, the prospect of some goodies out of Petra´s hands is not very tempting, unfortunately.

Well, I am positive better days will come.

My email to our friend G. remains unanswered. Wherever he is right now, I hope he´s doing OK!

Speaking of cars we one owned - in my mid-twenties, I had a 1958 Mercedes 180, nicely colored in a dark blue ( a little darker than in the following picture).

It was my every day car, which required a lot of care. I should have kept it, but I could afford only one car in those days, so I sold it to get a more reliable one. Do I regret this today! They don´t make `em like they used to!

Have a great one, folks!

Evenin' folks!

Barry, I'll be right over (as soon as I find my passport).  I always love some good BBQ Ribs!  Think they'll still be warm by the time I get through Customs?

Actually My son called this afternoon and told me to go over to their house for supper as he was cooking out (hamburgers and hot dogs) Barry, did you get solar installed?  I had the best day so far this year.  doesn't get too much better than the output today.  The meter say it made 29.24 kWh today.  Absolutely gorgeous sunny day.  Could have been a few degrees warmer, but all told simply gorgeous out there.

The contractor got the new window installed today...  Some photos of the work.  First some more damage.  The next step will be to remove and replace the Fascia boards:

A good vapor barrior has been installed and then the 1/2" foam insulation under the siding:

Then the wimdow was installed:

Hopefully by the end of the week his part of the project will be done...

Hope you all have a great night.  Also hope Galaxy is OK!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Work Front It was a bag of mixed blessing and feelings today. I worked by my self today and it was slooooow but a good day for me. I had $2330.00 in sales and sold yet another good sizes Spiff Memory Foam mattress set! Yes Yep, the 4th one in 3 days, maybe next month house payment will not be that much as a pain.

Reason I said mixed blessing is because of Dave. His wife finally realized something was not just right with him. His speech was slurred and he was blacking out / fainting and called in to say she was taking him to the ER. I feel bad I never called her and told her I thought something was wrong with him. It is not like we where friends and I knew his family. If Dave comes back, I hope it is the New And Improved Dave, I am sick of dealing with the ate up Dave!

The very first car I had was a 1960 Ford Galaxie 500...with a 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree...which soon got turned into a 427 monster...

Blownout I have posted this before but what the heck. My dad did not want to be a Hot Rodder like him so my first car was a 1963 VW Bug.(Did Not Work) It was painted Plum Crazy with fiberglass rear fenders and chrome revresed wheels sporting G 60 15's. I started out adding headers, then Zenith 2 barrel carb. It helped, but I only got up to 45 HP and stock 1300 CC was 39 HP. What to do, what to do. Whistling

I know, lets buy a 1973 block, get a 2200 CC EMPI Roller Bearing Crank and Barrels (Cylinder's) and pistons. Use 302 Z-28 rods, TRW roller cam, Dual Port Polised Head, Bigger Vales, Bosh Mag, dual Weber 40 IDA Carbs, Holley Fuel Pump, Lighten flywheel and a racing clutch, Hurst Shifter and close ratio 3rd and 4th gear! Big Smile Doing The Tim Allen Grunt!

I never ran the Bug at the strip, but I would guess it was around a 13.5 car. Off the line, well may be 1.6 at the 60 foot mark. My claim to fame was when I smoked a 67 4-speed Tri Power Goat. He had no idea what I was packing and lite his tires and I was gone. Laugh

Hope we hear from Galxey soon, and best wishes for Dave.

Thank you for sharing some of your nation's history. At some point I hope the contributions made by the ANZAC forces in Burma is brought to light. A very good friend of mine was a combat photographer, for what ever reason was hooked to ANZAC forces in North Africa, went to India, and then went into Burma with them when Col. Merill led his raider group in to cut the Jap advance. He always spoke very highly of them. I met some when I was TDY at PhanRang in 63. as I recall they were a stand up bunch.

Enjoy your posts and pictures---

You guys don't need all the drival i can produce. Plus I can get carried away with things like personal details NONE of you really wnat to hear.

I jsut needed a break form here, and concentrated on other sites that had more meaning to me for what is going on now. You might understand you might not, so ask me no questions I'll tell you no lies. It's VERy complicated, trust me. ANd some of you might not approve of the tactics. Lets just say my Mental Health therapsit is on board with what I am doing and up to!!

Thanks for all the "galaxy" psotings. i should disappear more often!!

I did pop in once or twice and didn't respon dto Ulrich's regualr email as I really had nothing to say. Still don't really, just more drival!!

So,that's my storyu and sticking to it.

We won't gete marriage counseling until about mid-june I guess, hope we can hang in there until then.

see you later, but don't know when.

I guess it is now my turn to re-open the moved diner, so You'll at least see me then!!!

see you later,

Good morning.

"G" ... Good to see you. ... I'm wondering if you like 1968 Galaxy's. .... In general, most people need to take breaks once in while from whatever they are doing. .... April is nearly over. Are you or Ulrich opening the May Diner?

Yestrday, a model railroad friend visited here, and we ran trains. The layout performed well, and there were hardly any derailments. Mr. Murphy was quiet.

Happy model railroading.

Welcome back, Galaxy.  We've all missed you, and to be honest, we were worried.

I, too, have issues with my marriage, and I've found that this site and another sports site I hang out on are my only real outlets.  If it ain't politics or religion, and you need an ear, be our guest.  There isn't one of us who is strong enough to carry the world on his shoulders.  (Somewhere, there's an Atlas joke in that, but I can't seem to find it.  Probably stuck on a slow boat from China, like the track.)

Good Afternoon Folks!

A dull and gray day here. We are back to what we usually have at this time of the year - plenty of Storm...

I still have issues holding any food. I am hungry, but without any appetite. The good side of it I have lost 30 pounds. That´s quite a lot in such a short time and I will address it at my next appointment with the docs next week.

Galaxy - good to see you again. We have benn missing you! Take a rest and take good care of yourself!

I did get around running a train on my make-shift layout. It´sbegging for more, but at the moment I lack the strength and the drive to do some serious MRRing. I hope this will come back soon!

Supper time coming up - that´ll be chamomilla tea and salt biscuits for me again - yuck!

My claim to fame was when I smoked a 67 4-speed Tri Power Goat. He had no idea what I was packing and lite his tires and I was gone. Laugh

Ken, when I was in college, my Dad bought a 67 GTO as the family car.  It might have been his mid-life crisis thing.  It was nicely appointed and had an automatic, as all good family cars should.
