After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
Well, the weather people say this morning's edition of snow is almost done. We got something around a foot, but it's pretty light and fluffy once again.
The Hudson is back up and running. Nothing looked wrong when I got the shell off, but when I tried spinning the flywheel I noticed the gears weren't turning. They used a press fit of the gear coupling into the flywheel, and it was no longer holding. A drop of CA seems to have fixed it.
Next I took on my Rivarossi passenger cars. The lights inside used to work, but lately they've dropped out, one by one. I pulled them apart and re-bent some of the metal clips inside. Two of the four are now working, but now I've got to play with the couplers. I used Kadee whiskers, but they are loose in the draft gear. I'm going to trim the side springs off some of the #5 coupler spring pieces, and put those in to reduce the play.
Still waiting for my orders. I realized that tomorrow is Presidents' Day, so there will be no mail delivery. USPS tracking is always marginal, so I really have no idea where things are. I'd sure like to get that graphics card so my good computer will come back to life. This old Dell is incredibly slow. Everything else is for my grade crossing projects, so those can wait a while.
But, I'm warm and dry and well stocked with food, beer and wine. I'll go out sometime in the next couple of days for more coffee, which I forgot on my Snowmageddon Preparedness run yesterday. I've got a week's worth, anyway.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Mornin'.... Uh, OK, Afternoon folks!
Zoe, I see you are still here so I'll have a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark roast Coffee and a Breakfast Sandwich to keep me going for a bit. Egg and Canadian Bacon would do it nicely...
galaxyI MUST smell!
Galaxy, Nah, that's not it. We don't have "Smell-a-vision" yet...
I got up this morning to a major mess! The ice dams are forcing water into my living room area where the big window is and the doorway on that side of the house. I have buckets in place to catch the dripping as much as possible and a phone call into the roofer! Not much more I can do at present. I do not get up on roofs!!! Last night the chimney of the wood stove clogged. Well the wire mesh at the top is clogged, but it means I can't use the wood stove until I get a Chimney Sweep to come and clean it for me. I just said, "I don't get up on roofs anymore!"
I have been thinking about what major renovation will get done next in the house. Now I know. Living room will get done next summer somehow. So much for saving to buy a Tesla... Yesterday I got in the PiP to drive downtown to mail a couple bills out (mail had allready arrived here and I needed to get out of the house anyway) turned on the windshield wipers to clean off a bit of sn*w, and one of the wipers ripped its blade. So I went over to the Auto Parts place and bought some better than OEM replacements for them. Friday the 13th. seems to be hanging around here for the moment (and I'm not a Templar Knight).
Got a long list of other STUFF to get done today. Catch you all later!

I freshened up today, I assure you...
Mr. B. I will be sending you a PM,
Johnboy, I sent you a PM,
Up to 3, count 'em, 3 donors for ULRICH! any amount will do, even if you think it is "too small", it can help! If we can do it once for Jeffrey to save his house, we can do it twice, to save Ulrich's eyesight!
ah well, laundry and such.
It is so cold in here I have th heat up to 70, a rarity for us, as it is only keeping it at about 64 what with the deep cold windchilll and blowing at 45 MPH, it blows right through here, at least the new furnace doesn't run quite constantly like the old one would have!
Well, offfor later
see ya!
Dam! (Of the ice variety.) Ray, I've got water coming in at the top of this window frame, most of the way across. A few years ago, we had one of these winters where the snow kept falling and we never got a thaw, and I had a similar problem. At that point, I bought a section of rain gutter:
I capped the right end and mounted it with enough slope that the water would all drain to that side. Then, I got some plastic tubing and ran a drain. Luckily, the bathroom is just to the right, so the hose drains into the potty.
This roof is at the top of the house, on the third story. I'm afraid I'm stuck with this contraption until there's a thaw, at least.
"Roof's leakin', Bert."
"Ayuh."
"Why don't you fix it, Bert?"
"Can't right now. It's covered with snow and ice."
"Well, why don't you fix it when it ain't covered with snow and ice, Bert?"
"When it ain't covered with snow and ice, the roof don't leak."
Good afternoon Diners,
Flo, I'll have my usual extra large coffee with gargantuan amounts of cream, please.
Galaxy: No, to my knowledge you are not malodorous. :):)
Did anyone ever notice that in application odor and smell are generally negative, while scent and aroma are usually positive? Amusing?!
MOH and I just put chicken in salsa in the crockpot in time to enjoy dinner when the SNL 40th anniversary show comes on. Is it important? Not in the least. But, I remember some of those original skits way back when, so does MOH. So, we'll watch just to see some of those again.
Weather outside is exceedingly (thanks Galaxy) cold! At least it is to me. Right around 0F this morning and not warming up much at all. I feel for you guys who have or are going to have ice damming problems. Been there.
Next month, when it gets a little warmer, I'll want to get into the garage and rescue that 2x4 little table I have, and then get a foam sheet. And I'll get a grass mat! :):):). Just kidding! Ulrich's plan called for 10 turnouts. Those will have to be slowly financed, one or two at a time. But, I'm getting excited.
i hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Evening guys
Havent been in for a few days so thought I would drop in.
Right now we are sitting at a balmy -30c. Yesterday we were closer to -40 in the day. Not much going on Model railrading wise as I am just playing alot of strat o matic baseball. Cant belive spring training is only a week away.
Evenin' folks!
Janie, a cup of nice hot decaf would be great right now. Yes, with cream and stevia, please.
Got a call from the roofers wife finally... Around 7:30 tonight. She asked me to call back tomorrow. I will as soon as I get out of bed. Still have lots of water coming in. Guess I know where the savings will be going come warmer weather! Hoping my homeowners ionsurance might help out a bit. Will have to check the policy... Just came in the other day.
Currently 2·F on it's way down to -7°F overnight. Wind 18mph with gusts to 28mph. Wind chill will get down to around -30° at times. Guess what is falling out of the sky!!!!!!!!!!! Good thing there is a rule about certain kinds of language in here! I am not one for using bad terms, but there is a time and place for all things, they say. Been in a foul mood all day, if you haven't figured that out.
I'm finishing printing the Division Newsletter for the few members that still live in the 19th. century. Amazing that most of them seem to have telephones... All the rest get the newsletter online.
See you in the morning if the house hasn't completely flooded... Stay warm and dry if you can!

Johnboy, good to see you!
Here, like Ray mentioned, it is very cold what with windchill and all... we have been smart to leave the faucts dripping.
-6F AMBIENT temp. out there, according to my VZ smart phone. don't know what the wind chill is! far as I know, the NE and NEw England state are the only "chill ones" in the USA right now! Wait: dew pt: -11, Real Feel is like -30 below zero Fahrenheit. wow, is it cold....don't know if the vehicle s will start.to echo what up831 siad yesterday: Its {very}COLD!!!
I got gas and having to take off thick leather/fur lined gloves to negotiate getting the loyalty card and the Credit card in I about froze off my fingers! I wouldn't have gotten the gas, except I have to go to Bingo to Lourdes to have my Pre-op sesional testing/instructions again. I will meed to get there and back,s o Ig ot gas, saved 84 cents/gallon with my loyalty card. and saved another 07 cents off with my credit card,, so paid a whole $1.28 for my gas per gallon. Higher than last time, still lower than other day's
That about it form me!
RUNNING TOTAL FOR ULRICH'S GLASSES: stands a $220 pledged!
ANYONE interested in contributing contact me through PM, please!
With his permission, I share what Ulrich said to me in a regular email:
"I am having problems to read what I am typing now, I have to grab the handrail when walking down the stairs and I have given up on driving the car. What really kills me is the speed of the deterioration."
Hence, he won't be in the diner much as he says "it really strains my{his} eyes to look at the computer".
This is apparently no ordinary need for glasses! If it was, they would be a cheaper script and easier to fill. Instead he needs the $900 variety. many of us would have trouble getting $900 together for a single pair, and ULRICH is lucky he doesn't need suregery!!!!
If you can/wnat to H-E-L-P, send me a PM private message here on the forums. If you HAVE sent one, and haven't heard from me, ALERT ME HERE IN THE DINER, as It MIGHT NOT HAVE GONE THROUGH!
We ahve reaised $220 so far!
Ulrich and I thank you all very much!
Hello?... Hello?... Hello?... Jello?... Jello?...
Oh, I see cousing vinnie is here, no matter he always is...
I think I hear an echo in here!! I am all alone!
Well, the total now raised so far is $340 towards Ulrich's new sorely needed spectacles!!
I/we won't beg, just asking those who can and want to contribute anything, anything will help! Rome wasn't built in a day!
I will collcct donations til the EOM put in a ITF bank acct for Ulrich, then wait a week for all checks to arrive and clear before sending one on-bank drawn draft fromthe ITF acct. to Ulrich...We will compare transfer costs to see if cheaper to convert here or there...tehn Ulrcih can go get his new glases!
It'd be a shame if we fall short!
In other news,
I go to the Hosptial for pre-suregery checkup, and the roads are nasty with some ice underneath teh gunk on them. SO It will be interesting, MOH cancelled work as had slid right through 2 interesections!
I have NO CHOICE but to brave the *bitter cold* and the drifting sn*w to get there, or it throws off whole suregry schedule!
Wednesday are my spinal nerve injections.
Well, i'd bes tget at it, as I have a shower and to change the foot bandage to do!
Later.
Just the "new normal" cold here. Last I checked, it was 8 degress F out, with the wind chill bringing it down to 12 below. Bright and sunny, but there won't be much melting at that temperature.
It's a holiday, so trash pickup won't be until tomorrow. Unfortunately, this will delay delivery of my graphics card and crossing gates. That will give me time to shovel a path from the door to the mailbox, though. In the meantime, I've got some modeling to do.
Extra large coffee in a STORMY SOUTHERN mug, please.
Bitter cold rain here with sleet/ice/snow on the way. Got the young fruit and nut trees double covered today, crutches and all. Whew, so glad that is over. Fingers went numb by the time I was done. Really windy. The way the trees are swaying, I have my fingers crossed none fall on the power lines. Indoors until evening critter rounds.
For all those having stormy weather, stay safe.
You think you have snow. It is even snowing here in North Dakota! Why we almost have one inch on the ground and alrady traffic on the interstate is down to 70 mph.

Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I need a refill for my dark roast coffee. Oh, another sour cream glazed donut would be good too.
I have been out running the sn*wblower on the Side area of the house where the Ice Dam problem is. Got ahold of the roofer. They will have someone here to work on it sometime tomorrow... In the meantime, as of first thing this morning, the water has stopped coming in the house. May have something to do with the -7°F overnight and much lower wind chills. Water may have found another route... Who knows. I will try to get a couple photos of the problem area later today.
Currently all the way up to 2°F with a high today of 10°F out there. My main driveway is nearly drifted in so you know what I will attending to today just as soon as I clear a route for the roofer to get to the Ice Dams... I have been checking to make sure the exhaust from the high efficiency furnace is clear. If I get a chnace I will also dig out a larger area for that. So far there is enough heat from the furnace exhaust to keep the immediate area open. The dryer vent is right next to it and I have done several loads of clothes over the past few days. That also melted down the sn*w.
Catch you all later!
Coffee refill, please.
Question(s): How easy is it to remove only the lettering on a locomotive tender, without removing the underlying paint? I would like to remove a roadname from (at least) one tender and replace it. Any advise to share on what techniques work best for this? Is a painted brass locomotive/tender handled any differently? Thanks!
Have also been thinking of getting a simple label printer for the new lettering. I need to make this as simple as possible.
Will be in the corner booth near the wood stove awhile.
Hello ..
Until today, we have had not significant snow at all. However, we awoke today with at laest 6" of snow and it has been snowing since then.
I still can't figure out the PM's. My settings should allow them.
Staying insdie today allows time for the layout. I am building stock pens for my originating stockyard. This will be part of the layout extension I am working on.
Rob ... I know there have been several threads in the MR Forum over the years on removing lettering without hurting paint. Look for them... I have used Solvaset to soften the lettering. Next I very carefully scraped it off with an X-acto knife. It is hard to do that without scratching the paint, however. If you are applying new lettering over the surface which had the old lettering, you can't notice any problems when you are done. .... If you don't have Solvaset, try rubbing alcohol.

I've done a bit of letter-removing. I used alcohol and a Q-tip. It seemed to work pretty well. This was on a Proto tender. I re-surfaced the black side before applying a decal with Krylon clear, and looking at it now, I should probably just put another coat over the whole side of the tender (well, both sides, actually) to get a more uniform look.
I think you'd be much happier with decals than with a label maker, by the way.
I did the Daily Dig and now have a clear path in case anyone in a truck drops by with goodies for me. That is, if they get here before it snows again on Tuesday.
Not much going on here on this holiday Monday. I have used the time to get a few games of strat o matic baseball in and just placed a order with them for a few things I need. Might go get a couple more games in before the nights end. Still cold here for sure, not as bad as yesterday but still cold ( -20c ) its feels warmer then -40c thats for sure.
Cant wait for Spring as I have had enough of the cold, lol
Lion - sloweed down to 70 !?? Geez what is their normal speed ? To the south oof hear we have highway 95. The cars think that is the speed limit. It is so fast if you go by a cop at 75 the police dont blink an eye. In fact they are likely to be tail gating you trying to get the "slow poke" out of the fast lane.

Good evening Diners,
Flo, I'll have my usual humongous cup of coffee with extra generous amounts of cream, please.
Take heart fellow diners. We are now over halfway through February. Spring is creeping ever closer. Temps not too bad today. In the teens. Wednesday and Thursday supposed to stay in the low single digitS, if it even gets that high. But sooner than we think, the temps will get warm, the grass will be green, we'll break out the grills, and the trials and tribulations of this winter will be but a faded memory.
At this point, I can't wait to get started working again. I'm getting eager for next Monday. I don't like being out of work. I suppose it might be different if I had a room size layout to work on. But at any rate, I want to get those bills under control and hopefully save up some money to allocate as risk capital. I have a dream in progress of having my own Interior Design firm,.....someday. So far someday is an eternity away. :):)
Well, that's about it for now. Not much to report MRR wise.
I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.
Up831 What is your nw job ? You want to start an interior design buisness ? In my industry I watch the designers come through and watch in amazement as they have one opinion and when the owner hs another I watch in amazement as they shift opinion like a cameleon. I shake my head and just walk away. CXant understand why anyone would want to work like that. What is it that appeals to you ?
Good Evening,
Rob, I have removed the lettering from several loco tenders and cabs, both HO and N. I have tried several methods but the one that has worked the best for me is using a product called 'Goof Off' which can be found in the paint department of your local hardware store. It is used to remove marks on painted walls. I put some on a Q tip and rub gently. It works well but you must be careful not to remove the underlying paint. Some will come off but if you are putting decals over, then I have not found it to be very noticable.
CN Charlie
Janie, I'll have my evening decaf please.
Another cold one here in the Finger Lakes tonight! Currently -1°F on its way down to -7°F. So far in the entire month of February the temp has climbed up above Freezing only twice, and then only by a couple degrees.
I spent much of the day clearing the main driveway and opening up a path on the North side of the house so the Roofers can get access to the ice dams on that side. The main driveway was almost completely drifted in with a 2 foot drift halfway down the driveway. It had also gotten well packed and was hard to get through. I cleared the mailbox so the mailman can get to the box tomorrow. Also spent several hours on Convention items.
Finally just headed down to the layout and did some more scenery there. Nothing terribly photogenic yet, but I will post the area when it is ready.
Most all the homes here in town have some icicles hanging from the eaves right now, but I think I hold the record in my neighborhood...
I wouldn't want to get hit by one of these if they were dropping off a two story house...
Here is what the problem is at the window. Water is all over the place.
Just as bad where there is not a heated space under it too.
Hopefully the roofer will have some suggestions to prevent this from happening again.... I used to have electric melting cables in the eaves, but they don't work well with a metal roof (no way to fasten them in place) and they didn't work that well anyway. Time will tell...
Have a great night. Stay safe and warm!
