Haven't done the math, yet. If .060 roughly corresponds to a 4 1/2" thick wall in HO, then would I use .032 for N?

No, you shouldn't base wall thickness on scale.  Instead, go as thick as you need to.  You won't see wall thickness anyway.  The problem is the classic "Chernobyl Valley Railroad" effect, where a small light inside a building makes the whole structure glow.  Since I light most of my buildings, I line them with cardstock and prefer thick walls so this doesn't happen.

My Oregon Rail Supply crossbucks and flashers are assembled, and I'm painting them now.  Still no word on the Rob Paisley electronics.  I'm buying the assembled versions, as they are only a few dollars more than the bag-of-parts and certainly worth that small extra investment.

There is traffic on the street again.  It's February vacation week for the schools here, but until today it was like some sort of Doomsday sci-fi movie where the silence is deafening.

Coffee in a COPPER BASIN RAILWAY mug, please.

***Ray, here in north Georgia, the high today is 34F and the low tonight will be 8F. Tomorrow the high is projected at 26F. I really wouldn't call this "hot", and I moved here from Washington State.Smile, Wink & Grin

***Garry, are you planning on having any of those sounnd effect cattle cars?

It snowed here today. OK, it only flaked and didn't even stick. That is fine with me.

Hello ..

Mr. B.  .... I have nothing "out for delivery" today. USPS servies has been suspended all week so faras this area recovers from Monday's winter storm. Mail normally is trucked between our post office and a distribution center in Nashville, TN where they had a lot of ice plus snow. Those trucks are not operating yet this week.

Here we have about 15" on the ground, and the strong winds are making drifts.. The Highway Department here does not have enough equipment to clear that much snow from all of the roads.

My truck can go through the snow, but none of the businesses in town are open. So, I stay home and work on the model railroad. I continue building my stock pens for loading cattle onto stock cars.

Galaxy, I hope the procedure was okay for you.

My PM's are still not working, and I still think I have the settings as they should be.

Happy Model Railroading

Good morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual extra large cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.

Just a quick note because I have some errands to run.  It is exceedingly cold today and will be exceedingly colder tomorrow.  It may not even get to zero F tomorrow.  Days like this make me wish I'd never left LA.  However, with each passing day with its trials, spring and warmth is just around the corner.  Just a few weeks away. :)

Haven't done the math, yet.  If .060 roughly corresponds to a 4 1/2" thick wall in HO, then would I use .032 for N?  A lot of HO structures use .060-.062 for wall thicknesses.  I guess I should sit down and figure that out, because I forgot the decimal value for 1" in HO scale.  Wait, a 4.5" wall in N scale is .028.  An 8" exterior wall is .050.  Hmmm, I may just still use .032.  Dunno!

Well have to run.

Galaxy:  I hope all goes well with your procedure.

I hope everyone is OK, safe and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good morning!  We had a weak turnout last night, just six skaters per side, which is bare minimum for hockey, and everyone tires quickly.  Our own Old Joe, who is just a few years younger than me, rose to the occasion with a goal and 4 assists.

Today, I read the three little words that always warm my heart:  Out For Delivery.  Yes, my graphics card is on the truck and I'll have it mid-afternoon.  The train stuff (crossing gates, Tortoise and linkages) should be here tomorrow, but I'm never too optimistic when the tracking hasn't updated in a couple of days.

We are supposed to hit 27 today.  I was out yesterday, when it was 23, and it felt positively balmy to be that warm with no wind.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast coffee and a half dozen sour cream glased donuts to dunk.  Yes my R&GV RR mug will do fine.

Haaaaaaaaaarumph.....  Currently 15°F and going up to 20°F this afternoon.  Forecast for the day? More STUFF!  1 to 3" of white crappy STUFF.  That wouldn't be bad, but the forecast for tonight?  1 to 3 inches of STUFF!  Forecast for Thursday? STUFF with wind!!!!!!!!  I wouldn't really mind that if I could just disappear to the basement and work on the layout, but I have to take Blackie to the vet this afternoon, and have to get out and about tomorrow also.  I wanted to get to the R&GV RR Museum Meeting and Program Thursday night.  I ain't driving all the way to Rochester and back through blowing

STUFF!

RideOnRoad, Usually I like this time of year here in the North.  Just the circumstances of what is happening this year.  I like having 4 seasons like we have here rather than Hot and Too Hot like you Southern guys have.  Our 4 seasons are Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Road Construction.....

I am going to check out a couple of stores here to see if they have any ice melting products left on their shelves...  I hear most places are sold out for the year.

Galaxy, good luck with the injections!  Hope it makes you feel better soon.

Catch a bit later...

RideOnRoad

I don't know how you northern folk do it. Over the past three weeks I have been in Minnesota twice and New Jersey once. Dang, it is cold up here. I am just glad to be on a plane this morning, headed back to Arizona to thaw out.

At the moment it is -8 outside. The heat in my room is turned off, and if the temperature in my room gets above 68, I shall certainly open the windows.

Here in my office I can draw outside air but if the temperature gets above 30, I'll have to turn on the air conditioner.

Summer is so hard on me, what with this fur coat and all. And the church is so warm (others do not seem to think that that is the case) I want to cralw under a pew ang go to sleep.

Well, I could do that anyway.

 Evening Dinner

 Flo a Beer Please

I have not posted for about 5 days now if anyone was wondering where I have been. I have vistied 2 times a day if not more, just nothing fun to post about.

Dr Visit on Friday the 13th did not go well at all. Sigh Seems I have a Major Health problem. He could not find any Pules in my right foot, that is the one that had the Ulcer. While there is no current problem, I know what is coming if there is. Sigh I sure hope I don't go down the road Jeffrey went down.

Hello Diners.

JohnBoy ... If you are here, I'm wondering how your swallowing is progressing. Better I hope.

Hi Garry and Crew,
Garry, I sent you and Flip and a few others a email before the week-end. I hope you got it.
I had a better time after the second treatment compared to the first one. There was less swelling and far less pain and anguish, which I was very gratful for. The swelling has pretty well subsided and I will make concerted efforts this week to start swallowing.  I know the opening in the esophagus is larger as I am starting to have some reflux action that I have not had for over a year. So the opening is there now.
But this is still a long process, the Surgeon says the process will probably last approx. two years, but I'm hoping it will progress a little faster than that.
I find it hard to believe a handy fellow like you doesn't have a snow shovel. I have a number of them here. I can loan you one. They are all well polished up. We got about half what you did over the week-end and the wind is still blowing it around.
I've got some pictures of the north section of my layout on my phone. This is the mountain and river section, now I have to figure out how to get them on the Puter and then onto the Forum here.
That will be a challenge for me, but I will work at it.
I worked this morning and came home thinking I wouldn't have to go out again today, but there is a couple of items I want from HD., and will send Galaxy some funds for Ulrich while out.
Keep smiling, it really looks good on ya all...
Johnboy out......................................

Johnboy, I realize you want things to progress fastly, but sometimes slowly is better! Slow and steady wins the race! Yu don't want any setbacks, now do you?

ULRICH will be most humbly appreciative!

If anyone else wants to contribute to Ulrich's glasses fund, please PM me! Ulrich won;t be in the diner or on the forum much until those glasses are on his nose, as it ddoes further damage to his eyesight! I am in contact with him via outside world contacts, so I will keep you psoted! I will look for funds to be pledged to the EOM, then wait a week for all to arrive adn clear, and then Ulrich will have them as soon as wire gets them there, his new glasses in 1-1/2 to 2  months, I wish sooner.

Like Jeffrey, Ulrich never expected to be on the end of such generosity! He is most humbly appreciative, and once the funds are wired and he gets them, HE will be able to thank you himself!!! I hope our generosity comes to enough! we are currently at about $340. Needing a remaining $560! SO, no, you aren't to late.

Dinner Dinner will be roasted beast, sweet potatoes, geek pasta salad and salad....Yum!

Hello Diners.

We ended up getting 12" of snow yesterday. Normally we don't get much snow. I don't have snow shovles, etc. ... So I drove the truck up and down the driveway a few times, and used a broom and a rake to clear walk path.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes to start the day.  Will need a pot of Marakkesh Express Dark Roast Coffee to warm mme up as well.

Roofers are here chopping away at the ice dams.  He's got 8 guys at it.  Says he has been dealing with a lot of these at the moment.  Told me to turn in the reciept to my insurance and they should cover most of it...  It was back dripping in the window frame when I got up this morning.  He agrees that what happens is the slow melt from the roof fills the eave troughs and then starts the ice dam on the roof.  I will ask about what if I have the eave troughs on that side of the house removed.  The water would not be a problem coming in the basement as this part of the house is on a slab...  Will get an estimate for all the work I want to do out there in a month or so.

Galaxy, my favorite teacher quote is, "A teacher is like a Doctor except you don't know whether the patient lived or died for three generations."

Sun is trying to show from behind the clouds today.  Currently 5°F with high around 20°F this afternoon.

Edit:  Roofers are finished.  You should see the pile of ice they got off the roof!  I asked (the brother of the guy who owns the business) if there is any reason to keep the eave troughs on that side of the house.  He said actually they are what is causing the problem and said it would not be any problem to just remove them as that part of the house is in a slab.  So as soon as it warms up.  They will be gone!  Now to find a chimney sweep!

Catch you all later!

Why does 2-day Priority Mail take a week?  I've had occasion to use this "service" from the Post Office a few times over the past year, and it's never gotten anything delivered in under 4 days, with it sometimes taking up to 10 days. Tracking is next to useless.  I'm waiting for a new graphics card, which is supposed to go via UPS "SurePost" which uses UPS to get the package to town and then the Post Office to deliver it.  But, the PO's web site doesn't recognize the tracking number.  The last information from UPS was that it was at the local distribution place one town over.  I hope they just deliver it to my house, but I'm afraid they will drive right by and go to the local Post Office, which is one or two more days.  Bah.

Anyway, I've been putting together a couple of crossing flashers from Oregon Rail Supply.  Nice little project, but now I'm to the part where I've got to run magnet wire through a narrow brass tube, without scratching the insulation off.

I think we're going to miss the snow from today's storm.  It's passing just to the south of us.  A few flakes should be all.  Still, we will only nudge the freezing point once in the next 10 days.

Good late night Diners,

Brunhilda, no coffee, I'll have a glass of your best whatever passes for wine and some cheese and crackers, please.

YGW:  Since you ask, I am a corporate level Interior Designer and a Kitchen and Bath Designer.  I love what I do!  I did commercial design for over 20 years and more recently I've been doing kitchen design.  The new job will be merchandise layout for a retailer.  Now, all that said, it's not quite as impressive or intimidating as it sounds.  I've tried to get my own thing going for a few years now, but so far have fallen flat.  A lot of it has to do with confidence, promotion, and capital, and only recently have I felt that I could get the business off the ground if I tried again.

I can't speak for other designers, but when it comes to clients, I don't really have an opinion unless there's a code or safety concern.  I won't be living with the project.  The client will.  I am there to help them and guide them to get their dreams within their budgets be it commercial or residential.  Well, I don't mean to bore anyone, but it is something I can get fairly passionate about.

Ray: That's a rather impressive array of icicles you have there.  Probably a day late and a dollar short, but have you been able to rake any of that extra snow off of the roof?  Most often it's a function of too much snow melting and then re-freezing, but it could also be a function of insulation.  Maybe get the scouts over with their axes to get points for their "Toten Chips."  Ulrich, that's slang meaning to carry.  It has nothing to do with dying. :):):)

Well, time to head off to bed.  I hope everyone is OK, safe and warm.

Hi James,

House was built in the 1950s.  The part of the house you see was originally either a side porch or a carport.  Several of the houses in the neighborhood have the same thing, and they all have been converted to using this part as living space.  Most of them have the same problem, but not quite as severe as mine is this year.  I ended up with a lot of snow there due to the location of the house.  My roofer is considered to be the very best in this part of NYS.  Stands behind his work 100% and is the most knowledgeable guy around (according to the City Code enforcement officer for my neighborhood).  There are a lot cheaper, but this guy is the best.  The roof is not shingled, BTW.  A couple years ago I put a new roof and decided this would be the last one I will need (and probably the next several to own the house).  Put on Steel roofing.  A lot of people around here have gone that route too....  I believe that they did put down a membrane as part of that, and if I recall it was for the entire roof.  It's not leaking in from the roof, but rather the window framing.  You can see where the water is going in under the eave of the roof.....

I doubt very much there is any venting in the rafters (most likely 2 x 4s) over this part of the house.  Probably have been filled with wall insolation.  There are often ice dams on the main part of the house as well, but they tend to be self limiting.  Snow would just slide off except it gets caught on the eave troughs.  I think the main problem is that this roof was originally just a roof over a porch...  The roof has a very low pitch as well which contributes to the problem.  I will be tearing off the ceiling inside as part of the repairs over the summer and will be sure that proper venting is added to the roof at that time.  I'll let the roofer and the contractor advise me on this.  (I know who I will hire for the renovation.  A former student of mine who has earned a great reputation for his work standards.)

Thanks!

Lion - sloweed down to 70 !?? Geez what is their normal speed ? To the south oof hear we have highway 95. The cars think that is the speed limit. It is so fast if you go by a cop at 75 the police dont blink an eye. In fact they are likely to be tail gating you trying to get the "slow poke" out of the fast lane.

TTYL

YGW

The Interstate speed limit here is 75 mph day and night. Work zones are reduced to 65 when work is on the opposite side of the median. Ie: face to face traffic on one lane. But then 65 mph is the speed limit on all other 2 lane state roads, and 70 mph on divided non-interstates.  55 is the limit on county roads. 25 is the limit in town.

Police cruisers mostly run at about 65 mph, so you must pass them to maintain speed. They do this so that they can eyeball more drivers. If the cops drove the speed limit they would see nothing but the same drivers.

The fastest I have driven on the interstate was 99 mph from Richardton to Bismarck, but then, I was driving an ambulance.

Howmus,  your ice dam problem looks pretty extreme.  Do you have styrofoam vent baffles under the roof sheeting with open soffit vents and an open gable vent?  Also, you may need 6" gutters and downspouts with heat tap in the gutters and downspout. Do you have 3 ft ice & water membrane under the bottom three or four coarsed of shingle?  That would help but is not the solution alone.  Also, if you have fiberglass batt insulation in the attic, it may be   pushed into the soffit vents blocking air flow.  This is a somewhat common problem that sometimes causes ice dams.  When was your house built?

I have never had ice dams problems in any of my houses but have looked at a few houses and roofs with poor venting that did have ice dam problems.  Your roofer may or may not know how to fix the problem.  A really good carpenter should be able to analyze and solve your problem as it is surely a problem with the roof deck warming up too much.  I certainly feel sorry for you as this has to be causing a lot of grief and will cost a fair amount in repairs.  Hopefully your insurance will help out.

Another cold one here in the Finger Lakes tonight!  Currently -1°F on its way down to -7°F.  So far in the entire month of February the temp has climbed up above Freezing only twice, and then only by a couple degrees.

I spent much of the day clearing the main driveway and opening up a path on the North side of the house so the Roofers can get access to the ice dams on that side.  The main driveway was almost completely drifted in with a 2 foot drift halfway down the driveway.  It had also gotten well packed and was hard to get through.  I cleared the mailbox so the mailman can get to the box tomorrow.  Also spent several hours on Convention items.

Finally just headed down to the layout and did some more scenery there.  Nothing terribly photogenic yet, but I will post the area when it is ready.

Most all the homes here in town have some icicles hanging from the eaves right now, but I think I hold the record in my neighborhood...

I wouldn't want to get hit by one of these if they were dropping off a two story house...

Here is what the problem is at the window.  Water is all over the place.

Just as bad where there is not a heated space under it too.

Hopefully the roofer will have some suggestions to prevent this from happening again....  I used to have electric melting cables in the eaves, but they don't work well with a metal roof (no way to fasten them in place) and they didn't work that well anyway.  Time will tell...

Have a great night. Stay safe and warm!

Good Evening,

Rob, I have removed the lettering from several loco tenders and cabs, both HO and N. I have tried several methods but the one that has worked the best for me is using a product called 'Goof Off' which can be found in the paint department of your local hardware store. It is used to remove marks on painted walls. I put some on a Q tip and rub gently. It works well but you must be careful not to remove the underlying paint. Some will come off but if you are putting decals over, then I have not found it to be very noticable.

Up831 What is your nw job ? You want to start an interior design buisness ? In my industry I watch the designers come through and watch in amazement as they have one opinion and when the owner hs another I watch in amazement as they shift opinion like a cameleon. I shake my head and just walk away. CXant understand why anyone would want to work like that. What is it that appeals to you ?

Good evening Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual humongous cup of coffee with extra generous amounts of cream, please.

Take heart fellow diners.  We are now over halfway through February.  Spring is creeping ever closer.  Temps not too bad today. In the teens.  Wednesday and Thursday supposed to stay in the low single digitS, if it even gets that high.  But sooner than we think, the temps will get warm, the grass will be green, we'll break out the grills, and the trials and tribulations of this winter will be but a faded memory.

At this point, I can't wait to get started working again.  I'm getting eager for next Monday.  I don't like being out of work.  I suppose it might be different if I had a room size layout to work on.  But at any rate, I want to get those bills under control and hopefully save up some money to allocate as risk capital.  I have a dream in progress of having my own Interior Design firm,.....someday.  So far someday is an eternity away. :):)

Well, that's about it for now.  Not much to report MRR wise.

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!
