Hello Railfans! Top of the evening to ya. Flo - my usual please!

Ken - grab you another  Beer , i sent you a rather long PM. Sorry about your day, but glad your feeling better.

Loved the last pic - now THAT is what a diesel loco SHOULD look like! No stinkin safety cab, no heritage paint scheme on a loco no heritage road EVER owned, no bat wings, smiling for the camera NOT looking like a Cyborg!

Garry - Welcome back from Fla.! Hey, you didnt happen to see two teeneagers in a stolen truck passing out bad checks whilest you was down there did you? Laugh PS - your trains called.... they missed you!

Ulrich - Hey man, thats a pretty nice looking place. I like the 'clean' no clutter yard look. Simple easy house design. Though i can imagine what it must sound like with 3 other families living there. And this is where locos with sound come in! Laugh

As for your latest hobby woes - keep chugging my friend, railroading isnt something that is dependant on $$$, or your house, or if the OH approves or not, track plans, etc etc.  .... its in the blood.  Wink

Howmus - Ya know, just about every post your doing something. Actually a whole lotta somethings. I sincerely hope one day you have this much time to devote to your trains as a nice payback for you.

Galaxy -  Shocking to see you this way. You are usually so upbeat. Now I know why. Just know that i too have - Been there, done that!

Probably no consolation to you except for you to know that you arent alone.

YGW - Congrats on the new homestead! Here's to your future empire! Drinks Hopefully grand-ma-ma will show up again and rescue the kids AND the OH, giving you an evening to break ground (do benchwork) on it.

Well folks, i spose thats about it. I hope you underfeelers are feeling better. Cheers up Thumbs Up Thumbs UpThumbs Up to Ulrich and Galaxy, am pullin for ya guys. Good nyt folks.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf for me, thanks!

Long day....  Actually got some time to do a bit of scenery on the new section of the layout.  Haven't been able to hardly even get down to the layout room for over 3 weeks now.  Spent a couple hours down there today.

I hope the next week I will be able to both get some house cleaning that is badly needed done and have some time for modeling.  Tomorrow I will need to get the certificates printed for the Art and Poetry Winners, but that won't take long.  The main form is already in the computer, just need to type in Name, Grade, and whether it is Art or Poetry...

Have a great night everyone!

Galaxy - I am very sorry that you are having to go through that. Understand where you are and that is not a pleasant place to be. Will keep you in prayer

Cuda - LOL "How not to do it " ? Hey at least it runs right ?

Well good news to report. Think MOH and I have found a new home that we BOTH like ( so far ) it has an unfinished Bsmt ! That means I can build the RR my way !!! And even better today at my daughters basketbal practice I ran into an old friend who also has MR. He quit after his brother passwed away BUT the good news is he has agreed to stop by and bring his equipment by to help me fix a few pesky problems on mine !!! Hoping my friend will reignite the MRR juices and get back into it. Grandma also came by and picked up the kids for the evening Big Smile me and MOH had a gift certificate for Outback ( yummy ) and we went OUT to dinner with out the kids, I love them very much but we had a nice time, YAHOO. And to add the icing to the cake. My NMRA mag came in today. Yep its been a WONDERFUL day.

 Evening Dinners

Flo I will have a JSTL and a Beer. If that Buick guy shows up, give him my tap! Whistling

Today sucked caboose at work. Well that covers that! Sigh

YGW While my POS bench runs well it really needs to be torn down. It looks like a 8 year old had $7000.00 and went to his LHS and Lowes. If MRR Magazine want to do a article on how not to build a train layout they would use mine! 2 reasons it is still standing?

1 To lazy to start over at this point.

2 BoS with the way they dragged things out for 3 year I don't think I will be able to keep the house. Not with my current income.

Galaxy Sorry to hear about what is going on.

Ulrich Glad you are still thinking and planning your layout. The B&O was not bulit in a day. By the way, for low income housing it sure does look nice!

Hey Douglas What is the model number of the IBM conputer anyway?

 Later, Ken

WEll,

you guys lost me for a while and didn't know it. The computer gave up the ghost on the OS today, so I had to re-install it and let Dell take over to complete/update the task. SO now I am back, but this particualr computer has given us nothing but trouble for day 0 2 years ago. Like-remember I kept complaining about the modem fritzing out on us? I kept complaining it had to be "reauthorized" by TWC. Well, FINALLY Time Warner Cable came out and, INDEED, IT was BAD. SO it got replaced FINALLY. That problem asside, this computer has been a headache. SO I will diligently begin the search, probably for a laptop to have as a back-up. That way if it fritzes again,we are nto left hanging and not having a computer for MOH to do "homework" for work on.

As far as meds, Yes, LION, I am aware {saw the news} that generics are going up up and away, due to the gov't saying they must go generic sooner, and the pharma companies claiming they are not "making any money" on them. I will try my best to NOT have so many, and Like I said, if I die due to lack of medication, MOH can sue them.

YGW:AS far as the"D word" you guys have NO clue what is going on,,,it has to do with infidelity and I am NOT the one doing it! So, NO, Garry, I cannot appoligize as I am NOT the one who needs to do so. {there ain't nuttin' MOH can't get at home} Now you get it? I won't mention it any more. GOT it? We {MOH and I} have been through this before, and again, and again, and more again. MOH is a "wanderer" and it takes its toll on both me, and our relationship. "Kissing and making up" may NOT be in the cards anymore, as MOH apparently would rather be kissing someone else {on ocassions}.

So, If the computer fritzes and I am unable to get on, you will know what has happened. This SHOULD take care of it, but it remains to be seenas to why it was corrupted to begin with. Changing passwords may not be enough always.

So later I have a lot of email to go through as havent' been on since I posted my morning greeting.

later

dinner was steak of beef, cous cous, french sliced green beans.Dinner At least MOH ate something and was hungry for it.

Good afternoon

We just returned from Florida.  Nice vacation.

I just glanced at some of the posts.  CAUTION.  Political conversations are not allowed in this forum. Please review Steven Otte'a rules.  We don't want to lose any if you.

Feel free to contact me directly if you wish to talk with me about politics.

Ulrich ... I have a suggestion.  Try modeling a streetcar layout.  You can do a lot in a small space on a modest budget. It would be a fun project.

Galaxy. ... I agree with YGW regarding the D word. Each of the two of you is blessed with the other. Kiss and make up. I suggest you apologize for all of her complaints even though you may think the complaints are not valid.  To meet in the middle each if you must feel like you are reaching much more than half way. You can do it.

Happy model railroading.

Hi Ulrich,

So glad to hear you are still looking at possibilities on your layout plan.

Just a thought here, take it for what it is worth.

If you made your Backdrop/scene divider straight or even slightly curvered the other direction you would certainly gain more real estate for scenery, town, farm or industries.  this would add to the interest and give you more modelling options, if not now , then in the future.  I think what you have there is great , I just see you reaching an end very quickly and not having any room for your wonderful ideas that you come up with.

Why don't you play around with that concept a little and see what comes up.  Remember the railroad doesn't have to be finished by any date.. It's not the destination, it is the journey.

Take a hint from Jeffrey and stop using CAN'T..... Leave yourself some options and just keep plugging away at it as time and funds permit.  Things are always changing, we never know for sure. But the options, I believe, are  the best choice.

Lion - there were A LOT of things I was yelling from the roof top six years ago and people looked at me like I had two heads. Now those same people have a calender going counting to the end of the days. Nuff said. But the current commander in chief caused my deductible to go from 3k a year to 10k a year. Its the ole addage - Lets break it, blame it on (you know he was famous for saying its not my fault it is the last presidents fault, what woose! ) others so we can take control and power. I get ticked off just looking at that Bozo!

Galaxy - You should take that D word out of your vocabulary. It will end up there if you use it enough. Think on the good things about the relationship, the Wonderful and pure things, the happy times etc...Really enjoying the words - thanks.

Jim - if you like wine come to my neck of the woods there are wineries ALL OVER the place ! There are tours that people do all the time. Heck I live across the street from one !

Ulrich - Geez that enging in my other post is SCARY looking ! Glad to see you playing around with design again ! Big Smile

Ken - It appears that you are back on the upswing on modeling. Are you keeping your current RR ?

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just need another refill of the dark roast coffee...  Had breakfast hours ago and finished off with a nioce bavarian creme filled donut down at the church while the judging was going on.

This morning was the annual judging of all the little (and not so little) boys and girls entries for the MLK Art and Poetry Contest.  Went very, very smoothly and they started at 9AM and were finioshed by 10:20!  I got home around 10:45 after getting everything mounted on the display boards and located where they will be for the service on Monday.  The lady who volunteered to do the original sorting and getting the materials out to the Judges last Thursday took all the non-winning entries to her house to sort by school, grade, and class.  She is a lady who was the receptionist for my dentist for many years.  She has been battling cancer for the last few years and wants to do things to keep herself active.  Her husband was the Manager for the local Rammada Inn, retired, and then went back to work managing another Hotel in a city someplace else...  Their daughter was one of our MLK scholarship winners several years ago and is herself now a manager of a hotel.  Wonderful people I might add.

I just may disapear down to the train room for a couple hours this afternoon while i am waiting for the list of winners from the contest.  Then I will be printing out the Certificates for the winners.

Have a great day folks!

One day I don't want American freight trains to look like that other than Amtrak's NEC passenger trains. I don't think my heart can take it, but it will grow on me within a few months.

These past days I was thinking about my dad's Kansas Santa Fe layout. The forum was written last February about the project. I don't why I thought about it other than Atlas making Santa Fe equipment during that era with the new 40' XMs and locomotives.

Another side note my Conrail freight car fleet is slowly growing, to bad for the locomotives in which I have none. Sometimes I wonder if my Conrail fleet is growing to rapidly except for no tank cars, gondola and flat cars. My BNSF and Union Pacific is slow and steady being built one car at a time.

I think I am in a rush to finish a running layout by the end of the year!

Good Afternoon!

Before enjoying a cup of coffeee and some of the delicious "Königskuchen" (King´s cake) Petra made this morning, I thought it wise to go for a walk in the sunshine. Yes, we have sunshine today! It´s a little cold, though, close to freezing. I took my camera along, just in case I´d see a train. Of course I did! Nothing special, just our local commuter train to Hamburg or Bremen.

If the loco looks familiar to some of you, it´s close to the NJT ALP-46. And here is the freight version of it:

This is the house I live in:

The two dormer windows on the left side are the windows of my "train room". Petra and I occupy the 2nd floor. There are 4 families living in this house, each apartment has about 900 sq. ft.

Edit: I got TOPS! Janie, here is my CC, put everything on my tab for the rest of the day!

I take some name brand expensive meds, and some generic expensive meds and I now have a different plan that requires me to pay about 1,800% MORE {yes Eight-teen hundred percent } OR MORE in out of pocket costs than I was .

LION was talking to pharmacist here. Price of generic drugs is way up. Some simple out of patent generics used to cost ther $10.00 / 100 now cost her $100.00 / 100.  LION knows knot why this should be EXCEPT that, if that is what insurance will pay, then that is the price the companies will charge.

And as you found out, just because that is what the insurance says that is the price, it was not they who were going to do the paying. Keeping politics aside (as if a LION *could* keep politics aside) all I will say is: "I told you so 6 years ago."

Prefered Pharmacy. Walmart is the prefered pharmacy under my plan. Only problem is Walmart cannot run a pharmacy in North Dakota. The nearest "prefered provider" is somewhere in Montana (wherever that is--I am *sure* the subway does not go out that far.)

But we selected our plan based o what our pharmacist would accept.

So go ROAR!

2. Having sixth rank.
3. Having six parts or things.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin senarius (consisting of six). Ultimately from the Indo-European root s(w)eks (six), which also gave us semester, siesta, and Sistine (named after Pope Sixtus IV). Earliest documented use: 1661

Good Morning, Folks!

I woke up at 3am and could not find any sleep again - now I feel Dead

I give up on finding an idea for a simpler and maybe smaller layout. Whatever I come up with, is either as expensive as the "big" one, or looks toy-like. But I also decided not to give up on MRRing! The thought of not being able to sit down on the engineer´s seat and run a train is giving me nightmares! So in order to find a way out of the financial dilemma, I re-read the "model railroading on the cheap" thread and found a solution for cutting down the cost - at least the cost for track!

I omitted one of the passing sidings in the storage yard, as I had to extend the backdrop to gain more depth for the scenery. This frees up a pair of switches which I already have. OK, there are Minitrix switches which I intended to use only in the hidden part, but so what! The track does not look as sleep as when using Peco switches, but that won´t be really visible on the layout, as I will mount it close to eye level. All I now need is a double-slip switch from Minitrix and a few more lengths of flex track. The double-slip switch is already on order from the "Bay" at half price!

Savings in total amount to over $ 100!

I think I can also cut down on the cost of the benchwork, if I will use MDF again. I will take a closer look into that today. MDF is only 40% of the price of plywood...

Jim - I´ll go for Atlas code 80 track, then. Give me a few days to come up with a first idea!

Galaxy - your last post leaves me sad! I won´t comment on it, I will just say this - don´t rush into anything!

You all have a wonderful day!

Bon Soir Railfans! Flo - my usual in a frozen glass. And should we juice Kens Beer with some more nyquil or is he feeling better yet?

Galaxy - I just dont know what to say about your situation. I dont think words would help any. Certainly wont cover 1800% worth of increases. Times like this its nice to have a train room to get away from it all. If not for only a few minutes of peace.

Ulrich - Id say the same to you as i did Galaxy - no words to cover the sore spots. With you two in bad situations, plus a few others on the sick list, I would have to say 2015 is starting off on a bad note. Definately wishing all you folks the best.

Ken - hope your feeling better too. Love the B&O pics!

In General - For those with an eye towards the weather gauge, 50F and blooming sunny today.

RR - Thats right, i actually have something to report on the RR front. Of the last two days I spent one grinding through a PM loco diagram book. Ive read it maybe 1000 times, and it still keeps getting more interesting every time i read it.

Day two (today) was spent actually with some hands on modelling. I dont get to do alot of that. And the result is I am happy to say I have finally got a finished, working boxcar with working couplers. Id like another day to make another, then use them for a while.

Next couple of days i have to work so back on the shelf it goes for a few days. And thats about it folks. Two days of RR'ing fun.

 Evening Dinners

Flo a JSTL and a beer chaser. If the Buick guy shows up, give him a beer.

Work It was a sunny warm day and I was not busy. I had 4 customers and 2 bought and I had a fair day with $1256.00. I think I made around a extra $19.00 which is far better than nothing!

Train Front I should have my Walthers Rio Grand Waffle Side Box Car of the RIP track tonight! Big Smile It has only taken me 7 years to build the darn thing? Whistling I think I could hav bulit a real one in that time frame. Laugh I bought and for some reason I never worked on it, like many other projects.

Douglas What is the model number of the IBM you are working on for me? I like to see what one looks like.

 See you all later, Ken

well,

I did 3.5 hours of running and errands.I thought I'd never get back home!

One of them was to take scripts to the pharmacy. As always, COme Jan 1, there are changes, and this year did not disappoint, but BOY, what a shock it was!!!. , well, lets just say they changed my prescription plan to the worse!I have to change pharmacuies too, besides costs going up. WOn't say anymore.

When I have a heart issue and die, MOH  can sue and maybe get something done to change such violations.

Divorce, which may be on the horizon anyway, is really starting to look good now, I will go back to the assistance I used to get, and pay only the $5 or $10 in copays, still a small forutune on my income alone , but....better than...rediculousness!

MOVE OVER ULRICH, I will re-join you in the "poor house" again!

Grr

well, in other notes, I have been home for 5 hours and MOH has slept all of that time, I wonder if time to awaken for meds?

Sir Madog
I don´t know what I did, but the pesty thing is now up and running, although the display still looks, say, different.

Different How? If there is a deep color tint, then one of the pins on your video cable is bent or broken. (Or your video card is finished).

If the picture is too big it went back to the 600x800 pixel format, which could be fixed by boint to display properties and adjusting it there. Sometimes after a lock up the computer will continue to run with out the correct drivers. A re-boot should fix it.

Good evening Diners,

Flo, ok you don't have a good Pinot Noir, what do you have?

Chateau de Thunderbird?!

 Vintage 9:15 am today?!

Hmmmm!  I'll just have my usual gigantic cup of coffee with lots of cream please!

Herr Ulrich, my name is Jim, may I drop the Herr?  Since this plan will be done on the cheap, as they say, I would be using Atlas and/or Peco code 80.  For planning purposes, I would say Atlas.

my son's N gauge set is an inexpensive Bachmann.  The wheels are chrome plated or something like that.  I'm not sure they would even roll on code 55.  He ran it a little and MOH bought him some additional rolling stock, but for the most part it sat in a box and he's long since grown up.

YGW, I had built a 2x4 table using 1/4" plywood and 1x2's for support.  That's thin!  It never got utilized, but I was thinking I could use that and glue a 1" thick piece of pink foam board to help shore it up.  That way I could also possibly add a stream or some other grade variation and still leave the track on the same level.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good Evening!

My old `puter is giving me problems today. First, my track planning software would not run properly, second, the display went black. I don´t know what I did, but the pesty thing is now up and running, although the display still looks, say, different.

up831 - what track do you intend to use ? Atlas code 80, Shinohara code 80, Atlas code 55, Peco code 80, Peco code 55 and Kato Unitrack - all of them I can handle. Just tell me which one you prefer.

Good afternoon Diners,

Flo, I'll have a plate of crispy hash browns with ketchup on it and add some cheese scrambled eggs if you don't mind, and of course my usual humongous cup of coffee with abundantly generous amounts of cream, please.

Herr Ulrich, thank you for the links To the N scale track plans.  Most helpful.  My original thought on a 2x4 plan was to reproduce the HO Railroad That Grows plan in N, which I've always liked, but I don't think it will really work because of the elevated trackage.  This layout may have to slide under a couch, although that is yet to be determined.  On the Mikes Small plans site, I kindof liked plans 1,2,3, and 5.  So, I'm willing to take you up on that offer to help plan.

For criteria, this can be Anytown, USA, probably generic Mid-West.  I intend to someday build all of the structures from the Glen Wagner Boys Life layout, which I have the plans to, so for industries, that would be a grain elevator, a warehouse, lumber yard building, and I'll add a couple of other structures.  I enjoy switching and continuous running.  I'm not big on point to point unless extremely small switching or gigantic running to a destination.

YGW, thanks for the suggestion.  I'll keep it in mind.

And of course, anyone's and everyone's input and opinions will be graciously accepted.

Less is more,...more or less!

Italian roast coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

Have started considering tearing up the Bachmann EZ track on my current layout and replacing it with Kato Unitrack. Not sure how much "damage" this would cause to the scenery, but there are two reasons behind such madness.Hmm

1) I did a lousy job of ballasting and some engines and rolling stock find every flaw.Sigh

2) Figuring out how to incorporate the old layout into the expansion (which I have not started the benchwork for yet) is at best, challenging.Confused

If I pulled up the old track, then it would be a snap (literally) to add a few strategically placed switches over to the new expansion. Still in the thinking stage. It would be a lot of work, but maybe worth the effort long run in how the trains run. What would really help most is if I could magically double the actual room size.Laugh

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Hello all, sorry it took so long to post on here. The new years been interesting so far, I finally have a job where I racked up vacation time- now to wait for the NS steam schedule to be released to put that request in.

Well, modeling wise I got a new Kato locomotive done up, and two new boxcars. The open house schedule went over well this year, over 200 people easily visited- so it was a good year. Now for the club to prepare for our train sale.

Personally not much to report on in my life.  I've still got a job, and told I am one of the best at my job. So that's always a plus. There's been a bit of snow here, but nothing unmanageable. I started exercising as well.

Well anyway, enjoy the day all.

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Mr. B. - Glad the Twire is an easy fix !

Uncle B. - torn miniscus. Had that surgery years ago. Did you elect to get knocked out or just numbed from the waste down ?  Boy talk about pain when the numb stuff wears off Surprise

V8Vega - all that trouble for a fuss ? geez !

Galaxy - When it comes to Patti Label mac and cheese I do not display any Ascesis !

Galaxy, glad to hear she came through it OK.  My wife went to Florida to be with her sick Mom, who has been moved out of the hospital and into a rehab place.  Now, her Dad has something, and it looks like my wife may have it, too.  It's always something like that when she visits.  Maybe she should fly down there sometime when they're not sick.

Great news on the thermostat.  I cut into the ceiling box in the basement that hides the pipe and wire run and pulled down a short loop of the wire.  I cut the wire and started to check the circuit with a meter, and found that the problem was in the "easy" part, the run from there back to the oil burner room.  I patched around it with a temporary wire, and after leaving it for the day and night all seems to be well.  I figured (naturally enough) that the break would be in the completely buried-in-the-walls-somewhere portion of the wire run.  This won't take long at all to replace the wire where it belongs.

The long-range forecast for the Springfield train show is improving.  The threat of "mixed precipitation" for the day before is gone, so the roads should be dry.  That's the part I care about.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

well,

Friday, January 16th, 2015!

we slept long and hard, and no, the cat could NOT wake us. Here it is 7:30 and I just got up!

MOH had some pain at surgical site last night, called for me to help. but was OK at solving problem. SO I willingly went back to sleep. Thing is, with the heavy duty pain kille on board, MOH will sleep often if the pain allows it.SO could sleep all day...

I have a script to go fill for MOH, and a few errands, but MOH will be OK.I gotta call my Dr.s office and find out what about my script refills I called in on Monday!!

FIL wants to be a pain and come over today, won't take "no" for an answer.and NO, it is NOT because of concern over the surgery, he has alterior motives that have nothing to do with that! He always does! SInce MOH can't go to him, he wants to come here. bosh.Just what I/we need.Yes, I "love" the man {about as much as he "loves" me}, but he tries patience so...

Healings for those in need

Make it a great day

Good Morning!

I got up later than usual, so I am really hungry. Flo, I´ll go for a big breakfast, so make it bacon & eggs, hotcakes, sausages, mushrooms, a tall glass of OJ and plenty of coffee for me, please.

I´ll have another go at finding a layout idea which is in my financial, space and ability limitations - I do hope I´ll be able to come up with something!

Johnboy - nice critter! Would you like to have a HO scale (nah, it´s OO scale) model of it, running on 9mm track?

Not exactly the same, but very close! It´s a model made from a kit by Backwoods Miniatures of UK.

The On30 guys are even better of - here comes the Ixion Models "Coffee Pot":

Healing energies to all needing them!

Galaxy, I'm sorry the surgery ordeal too longer than planned.  I'm glad YOH is doing ok.

Last year was Diagnosis Year for me.  2015 looks to be Surgery Year.  Thursday was the day for Operation 1, using a laser to blow up kidney stones.  This was my first time with a laser, and it may be the last.  The problem is the stent they left in me, which shed the string that keeps it, uh, attached and accessible within a couple hours of my arrival at home.  That's not a good thing, especially since they told me, DON'T CUT THE STRING!!  I didn't, but here we are anyway.

I get to have aarthroscopic surgery on my left knee in 2 weeks.  I tore a meniscus, I know not how but suspect it happened while exiting my car to shoot a CSX freight in Syracuse 2 months ago.  Well, at least it may have been train related!!!

Next after that is another kidney stone hoedown, most likely in March.  Then, I may have to have cataract surgery because the vision in my left eye is deteriorating rapidly.  It, and the kidney stones, are apparently related to  sarcoidosis, which was discovered in my system last spring.  Kind of a kick in the shorts, overall, especially since I'd like to get working on designing and building my layout, not spending my time and money on medical bills and field trips to the hospital.SoapBox

Sorry to whine, but I needed to vent a bit.

last mountain & eastern hogger

Take a look and see if you are not impressed as well.   Click link below >>>>

Well, Isn't that the cutest little thing?
I WANT one for my "garden railroad"!

And, yes, there is no thing like the smell of {soot} belching out of a steam loco of any type while watching the scenery go by!
I am pleased I live near so many still operating steamers here in NE of the good Ol'e USA.
I am also fortunate that MOH is into steam trains as well, so going on a "vacation trip for a weekend" to see/ride behind am operating steamer is  a no-brainer, MOH is THERE!
This coming summer we will venture to Conn. to ride behind a steamer taking us to a river  boat for a ride, and back again.
And, for a mere $550 you can "hand on the throttle" operate the steam loco!{must be in "good health" so I may not qualify if We had the money}
Can't wait! It will be our anniversary present {if we survive our current issues}.

Thanks Johnboy, for sharing!
