A good Thursday morning to you all. Still raining, but, well, it's a work day and we really need the rain.
We, too, use all of those plastic grocery bags to line the can beneath the kitchen sink. If we didn't have them, we'd have to buy plastic trash bags separately, and those are heavier plastic and use even more "dinosaur dung." I can see the reasoning behind the "bring your own bag" concept, but it's not clear to me that it's really better. Waste not, want not, and we don't waste our grocery bags.
Penny is pretty much over her cold, after 2 weeks. She's back to teaching her art enrichment classes. This will be the last term for that, as she's "retiring" from this activity. Last night, she was talking about how "loud" these enthusiastic kids are. Yeah, she's ready.

Morning all. My computer suffered the same failure as my old one-and the shop will not honor the warranty-23 days after buying it (30 day). So yeah, I am checking on my phone until I get a friend to fix it. Well not much else is going on.
If the computer is under warranty the shop is obligated to fix it. Not doing so breaches the contract and the shop can be held liable. The only way they can refuse is if you or someone else violated the seal.

YGW. Those things in my hands are... were.. my wooden ramps I designed. I have designed..(and slowly working on it) ramps to help me with all the over's and under's in the large layout. Nothing more or less.. just my attempts to have a large N scale layout with Two Mains.. and maybe a side rail.. here and there.
The other question as far as my wiring goes... well, a long time ago.. all I wanted was a Fiddle Yard. Well .. I am finally there. Aside from the whole layout.
I'm seriously thinking about How to wire a Train Yard. It is separate from the actual Mains. The Mains will be 'HOT' .. always running up and down. With Two Mains... I should have some fun. At the very top is only One Main line... where my Yard is.
The Yard power is separate.. I want to be able to break down and stack trains for going out as well as bring in.
I'm sure, plenty of modeler's would disagree with my attempts.. but its what I want. I want trains running.. all the time.. up and down. If I want them to pull into a Station.. a flip of the switch .. and they come off the main and head down the Yard lead.
My biggest problem is..
The actual train yard is on the very top.
What I see myself doing is after laying the complete soldered train yard on the very top .. is marking area's (rail and cork) with a Sharpie.. of where the holes are to be drilled.. as well as where the wires to soldered.
Then take it to the kitchen table for soldering. But where to wire.. I have some reservations about wiring the Peco switches.. all lined up back to back. SO .. I guess I'll start with wiring the Flexi track in the middle.. (rungs of train yard) .. AND see if I have good connection across... the entire train yard.. including .. especially the Peco INSULATED switches. NOt the Electrofrog switches... I'm using just the Insulated Frog Switches. If not.. I see myself still wiring the switches.. and possibly doing that wrong.
So while I think about thinking about wiring.. I've moved onto making mountains. Compressed landscaping is not easy for me.. in fact .. I might move on.. move back to.. wiring the Train Yard.

Today´s a gray day, so I don´t have a bad feeling for not spending too much time outside.
I am still looking into various different ideas for a layout. I like the urban layout a lot, but the former financial controller in me tells me I need about $ 700 worth of structure kits to complete it! That makes it a no go !
The old layout will be gone by the end of next week, so that leaves me some time to find the "right" idea!

Keith - Peco insulfrogs are actually fairly easy to wire - it does not require any special wiring! Just drop feeder wires to each track in your yaed, that should do it.
Garry - Oktoberfest? I have heard of such an event, somewhere down south. That´s where Hannibal dropped off the soldiers with sore feet while he was crossing the Alps on his way to conquer Rome. Just an excuse for a heavy intake of ! We don´t do such things in my neck of the woods

Well the place where I ordered my C636 from called me last night at almost 8. The store is in New Jersey, so it was almost 9 there. I was suprised they called that late. Unfortunately, the C636 with snowshield I ordered (#4363) was sold out. They said they had one just like it, just a different number (#4360). They said they would throw in a free Bowser car kit for that one.

Good morning. It's 78° with 100% humidity. The high will be 90° with a fair chance of rain. with It's gray and wet here this morning. Been raining off and on for several hours now. My nephew got the Chevy G20 running long enough last night to move it out of the way. The fuel injector cleaner he'd been using wasn't cutting it. So I gave him a can of carburetor cleaner. His argument was that it's not for fuel injected engines. My counter argument was 'So what! It burns and that's what you need right now'. A few minutes later I heard the G20's engine fire up. Carburetor cleaner will also clean throttle bodies and injectors. Who's the dummy here? Today I think he's going to put a couple of cans of Sea Foam in the tank to get rid of any lingering water. No plans for today. I feel much better this morning than I did last night. The high fever went down around midnight to 101.5. A couple of quarts of ice water and a frozen t-shirt helped immensely. Frozen t-shirt? Put a folded t-shirt in the freezer for a few hours. Take it out and wear as you normally would. Old trick I learned in the army.Bachmann GP40 trainset loco with GP38-2 chassis. Looks kind of cute and would be easy to build - no grades a table top surface, foam "mountains". I then made a mistake - before investing all the time and sweat into making a nice drawing, I calculated the cost for all the track and switches. Now, hang on tight - a whopping $ 550! And that´s not MSRP! The "Bay" may bring that amount down to something friendly -. I have to check on that.
I guess I´ll have to pick up a more useful hobby - like knitting, macrame or quilting ...

Good evening. It's 80° with 83% humidity. The low will hit 68°, mostly cloudy with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorm. My nephew was out working on the G20 again today which I greatly support especially considering he nearly had to carry me home last night. Saying my health is poor would be an understatement. I have several infections, under control at the moment, balance issues, and liver damage that still hasn't been identified. My energy level is very low. Just walking from my trailer to my next door neighbors trailer is an exhausting event. It also gets my heart rate way up. I've already said too much about it and I'm certainly not looking forward to my morning email. As always, anybody who doesn't believe me is welcome to come look for themselves. I've had visitors from as far away as Seattle.Today my nephew got the G20 running enough to drive it. However it kept dying on him every thirty to fifty feet. It could be from some water in the gas or a bad fuel pump relay. I think tomorrow he'll replace the relay and see what difference that makes. Myself, I dislike working on computerized vehicles. My Century was so complex that it wasn't even funny. Any time I had to get the computer read I half expected to see the blue screen of death.Time to call it a night. Been a very long and busy day... I got ready to run the vacume cleaner this morning and found that the remote for my hearing aids no longer worked... I called and made an appointment for later inn the afternoon to see if they could fix it. I no sooner hung up than I realized what had happened. When the technition reset my hearing aids yesterday he reset them for the original remote that I wore out... Got down there and he came out and said, I know what happened", I told him, "Yeah, you set them up for the old remote..." He nodded his head. 5 minutes later they were up and working with the new remote and I headed over to get my allergy shot. That should take about two minutes... They, like all the doctors around here are now offering a patient portal that gives the patient access to their records and personal medical records on line. The nurse asked me and told her sure, I already have it at two other docs. So she set it up while I was there, adding another 15 minutes to the visit. Got back home with enough time to vacume the carpet before a Scouter friend who is the other Commissioner for the handicapped units stopped in to have us upgrade the unit trifold flyer that gets handed out to possible new members and their families.
I had baked some chicken wings and put them in the crockpot with Nance's Hot Wing Sauce earlier, and when he arrived we ordered a pizza for supper and updated the flyer. Afterwards he went over to the unit Committee meeting and I headed out to Waterloo for a Camp Properties Meeting scheduled for tonight. I got there and nobody else was there. Waited around for about 20 minutes and one other properties committee member arrived. The Summer Camp Director. We chatted for about a half hour and nobody else showed up.....??? So I came back home and went over to the unit Committee Meeting that was just ending. The two of us Commissioners and the Scoutmaster and his son who is an asst. Scoutmaster then stood around and talked for an hour.... In other words, I was busy as all get out all day and have little to show for it!
BTW, sorry for the rant yesterday. I should know better to respond to a certain person here in the forum..... I will only say that if you are one who is using "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle", Good for you! I have been doing that for over 40 years now. I follow the philosophy that one should, "Live Simply so others can Simply Live!" Nuff said...

I have had such bad news the last two days I have not flt like posting. Lot of health problems in the family. (Myself, I am fine) This meager paycheck is all but gone due to mediacl bills.
Sue stopped taking her diabetic med's right a few months ago. Checked her blood sugar the other day and it was 413! I keeping telling her to stop eating all the crap she buys, yet I keep seeing cakes, candy and junk food! She is going to the Dr Monday, there goes $100.00 and then the A1C test.

Sparkie started throwing up last week. After a few days we took him to the Vet and got him some pills that should have helped, they did not help him. Got him some antibiotics, he is still throwing up. Had some blood work done and he is one sick puppy! Seems he has Inflammatory Bowel Disesas. We are getting some new med's Friday, taking in a stool sample and they want to do a Ultra Sound. That will cost $350.00 by it self. While it is worth every penny, it is just bad timing with my current income.
Decide To Go On A Diet Still sleeping badly even with the CPAP and working out. Just feel so tired all the time, so I am taking the next step. Going on a Low Carbohydrate Diet I have used when I was younger. I lost about 120 pounds that time around. My goal are modest this time, plan on lossing 50 pounds. God, looking at it in print makes me realize how fat I am!

Ken .... Yes, Sue should watch her eating carefully, and take prescribed medications. Regarding medical bills, everyone was promised they would be saving $2500 per year with the ACA. Oh well.
YGW .... I built some of the 1/87 vehicles (3 '49 Mercury's, 2 '57 For Hardtops. 1 '50 US Mail truck with olive paint scheme.) . There are more kits to build some day. Currently, I'm cleaning up and fixing up my main work shop which was getting too messy. This is the shop for power saws, drill press, etc.; not where I make 1/87 model kits.
Regarding plastic bags, that is what we use when we clean the cat litter bioxes. Old litter goes in the used gracery bags. So, tha is sort of recycling. It is not something for the government to get involved in.

The weather beguessers told us it is going to be a nice day, but I have to see that yet. It´s gray and gloomy outside - just the right weather for a holiday! October 3rd was made into a national holiday, commemorating German unity. That´s something I could have done without.
I checked Ebay for the availibilty of cheap used Z scale track and there seems to be no shortage of that. Those curved turnouts sell for about $ 18 instead of $ 58 MSRP. I think I´d be able to bring down the cost of the track to a level where I can handle it. I also looked at the Z scale locos. There seems to be a step-up improvement in detail and performance to what I know from years back. The locos now have a 5-pole , skew-wound motor, and the steam locos of recent release have a complete set of Walschaert-type valve gear. Still not decided, though!
Garry - yes, I am near-sighted. I don´t need magnifying glasses, I just have to take my spectacles off and hold whatever I want to see "bigger" close to my nose ...
Ken - I haven´t had a good night´s sleep for years. I feel tired and wasted during the day, but I try to ignore it, as fighting it made it worse. I have come to terms with that situation. Does YOH know she´s putting her life at stake when eating that junk? Ken, my friend, there must be a reason behind her eating that stuff all the time, which may require some sort of counselling.
No HD list today, so plenty of time to indulge in my favorite hobby - dreaming of layouts which I never will be able to build.
Ken: I thought I told you that I was always waiting for that "perfect wake up feeling refreshed" morning after I go the CPAP? It NEVER came, but over time of using it, I DO feel more rested for the day, Of course both MOH and myself take at least a mini-nap in the afternoon {MOH usually has a pot between clients to take one}, which may only be an option for you on your days off, it will help "pick you up" for the rest of the day..even if it's only a 1/2 hour nap! Just a suggestion. Hope sparkie is all right! THIS is half serious, half tongue-in cheeck!, BUT Maybe you could start sneaking out the junk food when she's not looking and dispose of it at work! Then If you have on a restricted food fundage, she won't have a choice to go buy more! {AGAIN: JUSt A SUGGESTION.don't want to start a war in your house!}
RAY; You didn't sday anything wrong in your "rant' on platic bags at the grocery, so don't feel bad! Reduce/reuse/recyle is agreat idea. I once lived on a large sized island {though connected to the mainland via crossing over a canal}. THERE, you had NO CHOICE! YOU took your trash to the dump with a paid for bumper sticker, reupped every year. ONCE there, you HAD to sort your trash...this was in the 80's. YOur old books in one trailer, your old newspapers in another, bottls had to be separated in separtate bins by color, plastics sorted by color in other bins. All metal went into one bin, and all yard waste NOT in any plastic bags to another spot, then and only then, could you dump "gooey household trash" in another bin.! There WAS a bin called "miscelaneous" that they monitored quite closely. The dump was monitored and secruity was tight, with hefty fines for "not following the rules and sorting" your trash. I learned then of recycling. When Broome county {where I lived when came back form that island} started IT's recycle program they expected to only reduce "garbage"' by about 35%. 5 years after the institution of all recycling, they announced they had cut out about 85%, and the recyclables brought in more money tan expected!!! I say HOORAY for recycling! They no longer have sorting you recyclables here, they have a "single source recycling" so you don't have to sort it, they do it magiacally at their facility. I DO get some plastic bags when shopping if we need them for the garbage cans around the house, and get some paper ones sometimes for putting paper or shredded documents into for recycling. I think all states/counties should recycle! Ok my "ADVISORY" is done!
Jimmy Braum: I agree with Jeffrey, IF they don't fix it, consider taking them to small claims court for either the costs of repairing it at their shop, or preferrably another shop, or if you need to get a whole new 'puter', you may get awarded those monies! But FIle QUICK so you can show it is still warranteed, adn I would buy form them again!

Ken - good luck with all the things. Have you considered the possibility that your mattress might be a problem? I had one that was OLD (probably 20 years), and while I thought it was comfortable enough, was waking up still tired. Got a new one, and it made a marked improvement in quality of sleep.

I go in today around 10:30 guys, its a warm day out and there is a strong chance it may be the last of the season. The temp today is 25c but tomorrow and sunday the high is 11c and 13c so a big swing in direction.

Ulrich ... My eyes are also nearsighted, and I do take glasses off for fine detail work. Even my bi-focals are not as good when working with deatils. Unfortunately, my hands get shaky with age making fine deatil work challenging.
Ken .... Regarding Sparkie, I suspect your vet will explain what is best for Sparkie's diet. We have had vets explain diet for the dogs and cats we have owned over the years. Cheap pet food can kill an animal. Table scraps can be harmful too. .... Hope Sparkie improves soon.
Still working on the tool room / workshop so it will look better and be more efficient.

Good morning. It's 65° with 99% humidity. High will be 82°, cloudy, slight chance of rain. with Magnitude 3.1 earthquake last night. October 2, 2014 - (3.1) ESE of Center in east Texas. Didn't feel a thing here.No plans for today. Checked that spot on my right knee last night. Initially it was infected but a good cleaning and application of antibiotics took care of that. The infection is gone. The wound is healing and has no odor.Don't know if my nephew will be working on the G20 today. Will keep you updated.Click to view video
The weather did turn nice at noon, so it´s all bright and sunny, although the sun is slowly starting to disappear for the day.
I checked the bay and I´d be able to cut the costs of the track by a little over 50%. Makes it more friendly to go down that route. I have a PWM controller I could use (that Marklin Z stuff runs on 10V DC) and also a 9V rechargable battery with sufficient amps to power the layout for at least 3 hours, including the switch motors and lights (LED´s). This would make me independant from an outlet ...
I have also found a loco which I quite like. It´s a 2-6-2T class 64, one of those bread-and-butter branchline locos of the 130´s to 1960´s. But it´s a new release and therefore quite expensive - onlky 10% off MSRP so far.
The whole thing is just a notch over 2" long!
Deutsche Reichsbahn as well as Deutsche Bundesbahn had plenty of them and powered those typical branchlime mixed locals with them, so quite a suitable engine for the tiny layout. The correct cars are also available at the bay for little money (I keep telling myself tany amount below $ 20 is little).
Let´s see how we will proceed.

It is a very cool, windy day here with a high of 40F and winds of 30 mph out of the NW, oh, I forgot to mention the showers. At least there isn't any frost.
Ken, sorry to hear about Sparkie. One thing you should look at is Sparkie's food. One of our Westies had a food allergy to chicken and promptly after eating she would throw up her dinner. We changed her to a hypo allergenic food and the problem went away. Our vet told us that many dogs have allergies to certain proteins and so pet food companies have come out with foods based on different bases. In Pippa's case she was ok with the new food that was based on duck meat but not chicken. It was more expensive food but for a small dog the cost wasn't that high and certainly less than vet bills. Anyway, be sure to try changing his food.
I will be putting the finishing touches on my gas station today and put it on the layout. Next up will likely be ballasting which I have been putting off and may do so again as I have a new station kit that needs constructing. With the weather a little train running might be in order. I have a RS10 and RS11 together on a train. I found that the RS10 couldn't pull the train up the grade so another loco was added in which did the trick. Both are Atlas engines. The grade isn't too bad at about 2 1/2 % but it is on a curve which does add into the equation.
Well time to get going and doing not much of anything.
