In addition to liking trains, a number of us are baseball fans. Some of us have been quietly discussing the Red Sox, in the coffee shop and over on the CTT forum.

In light of the Red Sox miraculous comeback, after being down 3 games to none, I think that it is only fitting that the SOX have their own topic center stage.

The Red Sox have long been known for their inability to win it all. Some attribute that fact to the "curse of the bambino". Over on CTT one of the members is a Dutchman just like our good friend Lupo. This is how I explained it to him.

Sorry Daan, baseball is pretty much an American game which has found it's way into the Latin American countries and Japan.

The Red Sox are the pro team from Boston. The rivalry between them and the New York Yankees is long and intense. The running joke is that Boston hasn't won the championship since 1919. Their futility is comical, and tragic.

Babe Ruth was a great player back in the teens, 20's and 30's, and for a long time he held a number of baseball records. One of his nicknames was the Bambino. He started his career with Boston, but was traded to the Yankees, in I believe 1920, and Boston has never won it all since.

Red Sox fans believe there is a curse. The curse of the Bambino.

Does this conversation make more sense now?

One other detail, the Yankees have the most championships of any sports team in any sport here in the US. I'm not sure about the rest of the world.

So, if you like underdogs we can make you a Red Sox fan. They need all the help they can get.

Hey BigBoy, What a Series!! Best post-season baseball I've seen since '75. Good luck to the BoSox. I would hate to see them play the Cardinals in the WS but if the curse has been lifted, Well.....

I know that the best WS I ever witnessed was in 1975. Since I am a Reds Fan, you can imagine why.

Astros v. RedSox Who woulda thunk it. (Maybe,hopefully)

Remember, the curse is still alive--the Red Sox have made it to the World Series, but still haven't won it! Who'll be the Bill Buckner of this millenium? My guess is Manny--not much love in his glove!!!

Another interesting tidbit about this game and the curse. Who threw out the first pitch? None other than B. F. Dent himself. If the curse is still alive, at least the monkey is dead.

Tomorrow's game in the NLCS proves quite interesting--the Rocket vs. Jeff Suppan--2 former Red Sox. How ironic would it be if either won the deciding game of the World Series against the Red Sox?!? Until the curse is truly over, I wouldn't bet the farm!

As you can also see, I don't have any Stars--nor will anyone else until the lockout is over!!!

I'm actually pulling for the Red Sox, but a curse is curse of course of course!

I just got back on as this forum's website link was "down" for about an hour here in Tampa.

Well, I get back on it.......................and on the front page I see "Death toll rises.......

For a few seconds my heart beat rapidly as I hurriedly clicked the mouse. This may sound nutty but I was thinking "Oh no! Another a terrorist attack!" (9/11/01 images are etched in my memory). And since Boston is a major metro area, well you get the picture.

I'm very glad that it was about the Sox! I'm a New Yorker but I'm happy for them. [;)]

But I just wanted to point out that this is a good example of the incredible impact words can have![:p][:0][:D]

Actually I think Antonio has a good point, Elliot, you might want to consider revising the thread title, although probably by now most of the regular posters and lurkers have already opened it and seen what it's about.


Having said that, it was an incredible four game run by the Red Sox. I've lived and died with those dudes all my life and I have to say that this was their finest hour. [^] No matter what happens in the series, they did themselves proud by coming back from 3 down in the series, especially after the humiliating loss on Saturday. [tup]

Great, gutty performances by Schilling and Lowe. Great bullpen support (got to question the move of putting in Pedro as a reliever last night, though [%-)] ). And Damon and Bellhorn finally coming through with their bats, after all the critics were calling for Francona to revise the lineup. Ortiz, as series MVP, could probably get himself elected mayor in Boston right now.

I will say, that even when they were leading 8-1, I was nervous. A true Red Sox fan knows that disaster always lurks just around the corner. He knows that no lead is safe. The announcers kept on saying stuff like "...only 4 outs away from a trip to the World Series..'" and I'm sitting there remembering when they were only one strike away from winning the World Series in '86, and wanting them to just shut up about it.

Anyways, we've got a couple of days to savor the sweet taste of victory before they have to see how they'll do in the series. My heart needs the rest, and I could do with a bit more sleep.

baseball may be very much an american game, but over here in Holland, where we Dutchmen live, it is a very popular game, During the summer when there is no soccer competition there is a lively baseball competition and we have in the city of Haarlem the annual Baseball Week with teams from Europe, the USA and Cuba. The Dutch team is the strongest team in Europe and there are several Dutchmen playing in US teams.

Antonio, the joke is that some fans have lived entire lives waiting to see the Red Sox win the World Series. Since the last time it happened was in 1918, only a person around the age of 90 might actually remember.

There is this documentary called The Curse Of The Bambino, narrated by Ben Aflek, chronicling the futility of the team. In that show, the hypothetical situation of, what would happen if they ever won it all, was raised. The tongue in cheek conclusion was, that the death toll would be astronomical!!!

I expect that in the next day or two, HBO will air the show a few times, in light of the current situation. If you get a chance to watch it, please take the time, it is an absolute riot.

Many of the experts are starting to say that the curse has been reversed, since they beat the Yankees in such dramatic fashion. But others say that they must also win the World Series for it to truely be broken.

So to those Red Sox fans, who may be faint of heart, take your medication!!! I promise you that Doug Mientkiewicz will not repeat the error of Bill Buckner. I sincerely believe that this is the year, and next year we will all be Cubs fans.[swg]

I had no idea that the Dutch were that interested in baseball. Do you follow the North American pro game at all, or just like to play? I think since baseball was added to the Olympics, more people around the world have taken notice. My regular team, the Minnesota Twins, actually have the first Australian pitching for them. Grant Ballfour did pretty well this year.

By the way, until you mentioned Haarlem (we Americans dropped one of the "a"s out of our spelling) it had completely slipped my mind that New York was originally called New Amsterdam.[swg]

"Experts"??? Nonsense! "The Curse" involves the World series, not just the pennant. Although it is a little known corollary of the curse that breaking it involves not just winning the World Series, but going through the Yankees to get there. So they're on the right track. Let's just hope the light they see at the end of this long tunnel isn't an oncoming train.

I still think it would be easier and more efficient to break the curse by digging up the Babe's remains and formally apologizing to them. [:D]

Even worse, IMHO, is the thread title. It isn't funny, and it's wildly inappropriate now, as a 21-year old woman, Victoria Snelgrove from Emerson College, was killed by the Boston Police Dept. during the after game "celebrations". In January, another college student was killed when a drunken fan tried to drive out of a crowd of people after the Patriots won the Super Bowl, so yes, indeed, the death toll is rising in Boston.

I don't know why, but this death has gotten to me. I didn't know her or anyone involved, but still... Maybe because I went to college in Boston not all that long ago, maybe because I play paint ball and have been hit in the goggles, maybe because I was so happy the Sox finally beat the Yanks and now it all seems trite, I dunno. I mean, people die everyday for the most ridiculous of reasons, but to be killed by a suped-up paint ball gun fired by a SWAT team member when one is only standing around (according to reports)... Man, I don't know what to say...
