YGW - that´s Latin for "where do I go to?" Now and then I have to show off my classic education, which included 7 years of Latin and 3 years of Ancient Greek Laugh. In still remember a few things in Latin, but my knowledge of the Greek language has disappeared completely. Oh, btw, I had only 3 years of English before I hit American soil. It´s amazing how quickly you learn a language when you have to...

Jeff - keeping my fingers crossed for your surgery!

Just a couple of hours until bed time again - unbelievable, how quickly time goes by.

Jeff - that is funny the answer on number one : )

Ulrich - what is Quo vadam ?

Cuda - Ulrich - One thing no one things about is age and replacvement of the roof system. Most roofs are rated for replacement every twenty years, unless you buy more expensive roofing material from the start, 25 and 30 Year shingles for the next level of asphalt shingles and then you have metal (really expensive 40 to 100 year) and then you have slate ( super expensive 50 to 100 year life span ) --- point being if you have to reshingle and then pay to take the panels off and reinstall any savings has just been spent. Dum place to put solar panels - on the roof. I agree with Ulrich the eye pollution on mtns is terrible. Nuff said.

Lion - prayer for your parents

Newlywed front - Honery moon is over and now I am in the "honey do" stage of marriage. Hanging pictures, painting, unpacking etc... hmmm still way better than being a single parent ! Liking this !

Afternoon guys

It's my birthday, but it's not turning out so well already...

Last night at the train club, one of my 2 Kato F40PHs gave up the ghost. It fowards, it runs for a bit then it slows way down, then picks up again. In reverse it barely moves at full throttle. After some investigation, it is the motor that is toast. Springs are still good, it's just the brushes are stuck and the whole area around the commutator is black. I'm going to try to spray out that area with contact cleaner to see if it helps. I do have a few other kato motors that I'm not using, but I can't get the flywheels of the F40PH motor. That and the F40PH has a different power-pickup tab than the others. Kato's site says they are out of the motors for the F40PH.

This morning I woke up and about fell over. Extremly dizzy, like I had been on some amusement park ride. I drank some OJ and took a nap and it seemed to help some. So I decided to go to work (not calling out) but then it came back around 1145. I decided I should be at home if I'm this dizzy, not driving or working.

I'm gonna go lay down now. this dizzyness keeps coming and going

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Mornin' evryone!

Zoe, I could use a refill on the dark roast coffee please...

Gray and cloudy here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Weather guessers say the skies will clear a bit this afternoon.  Good!  Currently 72°F outside with a high of 76°F this afternoon.

Have to take the chain saw I donated to the Museum to Penn Yan today to get it repaired...  Those guys are hard on equipment out there.  I think they probably tried to use gas that had been sitting around for a few years in it....  It still has good compression so and can roll over when pulled so at least they used gas with the oil mixed in... Whistling  Hope I can even get to the chain saw place.  penn Yan is still cleaning up from the flood this Spring.

Also need to finish the little bit of lawn I didn't get done before dark last night.

Later!

Mr. B. - I still owe you a comment.

The label "green" in politics is a permant violation of the "truth in packaging" act. In our country, it means only tapping another source of revenue for the government. We have a number of "green" taxes, fees and charges, which have no other effect than making life extraordinarily expensive in this country. A positive effect on the environment is still missing, sometimes the "green" legislation causes reverse effects.

Does that make sense to you? I bet, hardly.

Germany used to be a nation with quite a beautiful landscape, green hills, beautiful valleys, spectacular mountains. When you travel throughout Germany now, those nice views are "mutilated" with hundreds of wind mills, most of them idling, as the power they could produce cannot be transported to where it is needed. The ones you see rotating at slow speeds are actually consuming power - they keep them turning to avoid the bearings to freeze. No wonder the leading investor went belly up not so long ago.

The damage to our wildlife is tremendous, a sacrifice on the altar of greed.

No further comment, I don´t want to get banned here.

I always know when I've played a good Tuesday Night Hockey game, because I'm beat on Wednesday morning.  This is one of those days.

We're having a couple of hot days, but it will cool down tomorrow and be pleasant for the weekend, although we may get some showers.  I can use some indoor time to work on that truss bridge.

I work later on today, that humidity we had yesterday has left and its now feeling nice out, a little warm but very comfortable. Not much else to report, with this weeks schedule ( and nexts with 6 12 hour days in a row ) I dont know how much I can accomplish on the railroad or Strat.

I am enjoying this job but already starting to get run down working 60 hour weeks.

Lunchtime in Germany!

Petra´s cooking up something smelling awfully nice!

Lion - good to see you here! Healing Angel for your parents!

It´s a beautiful day today. Blue sky, some puffy clouds, comfortable temperature of 15°C - my kind of weather! Petra and I will go for a walk this afternoon to enjoy it.

No real plans for the rest of the day - maybe some ddodling around with some track plan ideas for a fully modular layout according to Freemo standards. Could very well be the right path for me to walk down.

Enjoy your day!

LION been hiding on other parts of the forum. Now him leaving on vacation to Pennsylvania for a vacation with mom and dad.

Dad had fallen recently, and spent several days in the hospital, now he is home, but is confined to the first floor in a house that has stairs everywhere. Mom is not doing so well either, My brother Chuck with his consort will be there, my brother Russel lives in North Carolina, but will stay there and scout out assisted living arrangements in that area, since he is the only stable one who stays put and does not wander about the country. Well, I don't wander about either, but nobody has any intentions on placing them in North Dakota. (Burrr).

I'll have my lap top with me, but there is no internet connection in my parent's home, so I will have to search out some public WiFi.

I may or may not get a chnace to get into the city (NYC) to take pictures of trains (subways) but we will see what happens one day at a time.

All the best from the LION!

Nothing much going on this evening. Not much chance of doing any star gazing tonight. If you don't have have much to do maybe you can answer a few easy questions for me.

#1 A butcher working in a meat market stands five feet two inches and wears size thirteen shoes. What does he weigh?

#2 How many ridges are on the edge of a US dime?

#3 You're in a foot race. You just passed the runner who was in second place. What place are you in now?

Ooooo!  Ooooooo!  I know, I know!  Not to ruin it for everyone else, I'll PM you!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

I do run run, I do run run! Spent a good part of the morning doing paper work for Sue's Hospital bills. Then into the car! Spent about a 2 hours spending and spending. Bought what I needed to make Shish Kebab's, I now know why they cost so much in the store! It took me around 30 to 45 minutes to make 5 of them. I had not made any for around 10 years, maybe longer. Made Chicken and Pork Steak Kebab's with Red Pepper, Green Pepper, Onion and Mushrooms!

All so bought a new Thunb Drive while I was at Wall Greens buy laundery degterant. My 4 Gig was down to 300,000 MB. New one is 16 Gig's and while not free, $9.99 seemed like a fair prices.

Ray again thank you for your time! Yes I will contact Southwest Electric and see what they can tell me about solar. While I don't know the rate off the top of my head, it is high! 20 years ago when I bought the house and the central A/C worked and the pool was open it was not uncommon to have bills in the summer of $450 to $500.00 range! Ick! After I stopped using the pool it dropped to around $250.00 to $300.00. After my old Central Air unit died and I started to use 2 Engery Star window A/C most months it is now around $130.00.

See you all Wednesday after work!

Ulrich reported:

Legislation is now debating a tax for all those home owners who have had those solar panels mounted onto there roofs.

They're going to add a tax for people who have put solar panels on their roof?  Why?  What possible reason could they have for doing that?  That goes against every "green" instinct.

They believe in no free rides. Even if they are paid for.

My father and I went to look at tablets and laptops today. He couldn't get a good one cheap and couldn't find a cheap one that would do what he wanted easily so he did his best imitation of scrooge and didn't get anything. He thinks he'll be able to do all his bank business via cell phone while he's traveling. Has he got a shock coming. On my way home I took the truck to the Pro Oil Exchange and had the engine oil and filter changed out. Guy working underneath  said the filter beat Methuselah by several years! I can believe it. The truck had sat up in my fathers yard for at least that long. They couldn't change out the transmission filter as they were too busy so I took it to Master Lube and had them do it. All told it cost me $160. Money well spent as I see it.

Bedtime in Germany! That´s where I will be heading for in a moment. Maybe to catch a dream of a layout which will never be built...

Ray - solar power was pushed into our market with big money in subsidies, similar to what you received. Legislation is now debating a tax for all those home owners who have had those solar panels mounted onto there roofs. Including this new tax, pay back time for solar power will be a little over 30 years. No further comment necessary, as this is more than the expected service life.

Stepping off the soap box now and going to bed!

Have a good night!

Afternoon folks!

Chloe I could use a nice tall glass of lemonade right now...

Been out mowing the lawn.  Hot and sweaty...  Also stepped in a pile of dog doo-doo..  Probably the dog next door came over by my garden to do his duty.  Cleaned it off my sneaker, but can still tell there is some residue, shall we say.

cudaken
Ray Thank you for the answers about your solar panels! I sure hope you type fast! That would have took me 12 beers to type! I do understand the part about being hooked to the electral grid for the tax credit. Where did you get your information about how much sun exposlier (Spell Check) to excpet? My house is facing North South and the rear gets a lot of sun. I have a lot to get done before I am ready, like getting all the junk out of the pool! On the other hand I would like to learn some more about solar.

Ok, Ken, if I drank 12 beers while I was typing that niether one of us would have any clue about what I was talking about... Laugh  I'll answer your first question first.  The best place to start searching would be at the web page of your local utility.  Then remember Google is your friend...  Do a search on solar power in your area.  If any of your friends and nieghbors have solar, talk to them and see what their experiences have been.  I did research and got estimates from three different companies.  Any installer can give you information about what is available in your state in terms of rebates, etc.  I'm not sure how friendly to solar power Ill-annoysie is.  My son in Chicago was ticked a few years back because his utility didn't offer any plan for any amount of money that would allow him to buy only Wind, Solar, and water power.  Here in NY there are several ESSCOs that offer those plans.  As far as the sun exposure estimate, that is done by the installers before they give you a possible plan for adding solar power.  One company did this by phone and using the internet.  I gave the lady permission to have my computer screen controlled by her for this.  She took my address, and zeroed in on my house.  Suddenly I was looking at my property on my computer screen!  She says, "is this your house?'  I said, "WOW! how'd you do that?"  Anyway she could tell the angle of the roof, the position of the roof, and look at all the surrounding trees and other building etc. that could be problematic.  A couple of the trees are right next door and would only shade my roof during the winter.  Since they would not have leaves then, they were/are not a huge problem although they do cut down on power during the winter.  One major problem was the Blue Spruce I used to have in my front yard.  It was a diseased tree anyway so it got removed before the installation started.  Once the contractor comes they do a test with a GPS device that can give them all kinds of info on how well the panels will do on the roof.  This is done by others as well here.  NYSERDA, when they did the final check after installation gave my roof higher ratings than the installer and the power company did (meaning I would make more electric than we thought).  The guy's actual statement was, "You are going to love these panels in the summer!"

Now, some other thing to consider...  Please know I am a big fan of solar and wind power.  I promote it constantly.  But for you, I have to ask the following.  How good is your credit rating?  You will have to come up with a major payment before you get some of the rebates.  I had to come with $10,390 cash.  Later I got a tax break/credit of $3,117.  The small unit you were looking at put out 240watts?  Cost $1,100???  Even with 4 of those, you wouldn't be able to start the 1Hp motor.  You might be able to run it once it started for a few hours a day when the sun shines.  You would need a battery system (deep cycle) to store power and a seperate inverter able to handle 2500w or more peak to start the motor.  I have one for my car that does 1,000w continuous but can handle a short 3,000w peak.  Set me back about $800.  How many hours a day do you want the filter to actually be able to run?  You say you want to save $60 a month in electric.  How much do you pay per kWh where you live.  Here $60 will buy me 500 kWh of electric.  I use 600 kWh in an average month.  Are you having trouble paying your house mortgage?  How are you going to pay the loan you will have to get to put solar on your roof.  Second job maybe???  Ken, from the things you have told us on here, there is no way you can afford to go solar power at this time.  How many more years do you have before your house is paid for?  That would be the time to look at solar.  That is what I did.  When I put solar on the roof, I had little debt and adding to it would not make any change in what I would be paying every month on that debt.  The only debt I have right now is the car.  That loan is at 0% interest.  I won't ever take out a loan again if I can avoid it.

Morning guys,

Calling for a hot one today, close to 42c with humidity but then dropping right back down to fall temps tonight so Im sure we will get some storms as the cold front approaches later on tonight. I work 10:00 to 7:30 so I can imagine I will be very warm today. I will be fine as long as I keep well hydrated. I work that shift until Saturday.

Well I should get moving, talk to you guys tonight or in the morning.

Morning all, Hope all are well.

Well, I've got some stuff to do today that is not train related, so I won't go into it really, other than saying I got nominated for that "Ice Bucket challenge", and am waiting for around noon to do it.  I may be going after the heritage CNJ/RDG pairup again if I feel like it (Already got it, so not a big deal), and I need to plan some meals this week (Well, at least the price of butter is down to a dollar for a pack of 4 sticks).  Oh, I did design my freelanced railroad scheme.

It's a standard SD40-2 where the top is Soo White down to the railings, where a conrail blue stays on the bottom until the cab area, and then covers up to the top of the cab and leaves the front of the nose white.

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Good Morning Folks!

It´s a nice and calm Autumn day here in northern Germany. Sunny, but with temperatures of 12°C during the day (and 5°C at night) already way too cold for the time of the year.

My mind is in a lock. I have lost all energy to continue with the On30 layout, not only due to the problems I am having with it. It´s the place we live in which makes me sick. The noise level is just too big for me to bear, giving me ongoing heart issues. We are surrounded by kids making such a terrific noise that a 747 taking off seems quiet. We will have to move to a friendlier surrounding, whereever that will be. We have to plan on a move soon, but where to? We are not attached to the town we now live in, so any place which offers what we are looking for is just fine (what are we actually looking for?). All of these thoughts have a tremendous effect on my MRRing activities . Continuing with Keg HArbor does not make any sense, not knowing what space I will have available in the future. However, it´ll certainly take another year or two for us to find a suitable place, maybe even outside of Germany. Two years without any model railroading is unthinkable for me. So, if n´should I do something, it has to be fully portable. That does not leave many options.

Quo vadam?

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Ice pack and a Beer

Some Times Your Hot, sometimes your not. Sigh First part of this month I was cooking with gas! Now it seem's like I am cooking with a ZEPO. I was in St Charles today and we (Cary and I) had quite a few customers! Neither one of us did worth a darn. One of the things that might have hurt is the heat inside of the store, it was 89 at 3:00 PM. We had another A/C unit go down? Whistling Marvin has the worst luck with A/C units.

Workout Front Dang, nothing went right today! Some how I strained my left shoulder at work? It started hurt a tad around 6:30 or so. Still hurt when I got home so I did not risk it. I really wanted to lift tonight! What really made me sad is it will have will been 7 days senes my last arm workout. I am going to workout before I do any yard work Tuesday.

Ray Thank you for the answers about your solar panels! I sure hope you type fast! That would have took me 12 beers to type! Good evening everybody,

Not a lot to report on from around here. We did get in some railfanning as usual this past weekend. Rail traffic was sort of slow from what we are used to, but still better than what a lot of folks have available. We caught only 6 trains on Saturday, 1 crude oil, 2 mixed freight & 3 intermodals on Norfolk Souther's rails. On Sunday, we caught 1 intermodal & 1 mixed freight on the CSX line, then went back for more Norfolk Southern, where we got 2 mixed freight & 1 road railer. I always enjoy catching a road railer, it's such an interesting concept. This one seemed longer than most we see. Out of all that we did see some interesting visitors from the north, namely Canada. On Saturday it was what I consider the nicest paint job & graphics of any type of modern railcar. This grain hopper:

It was in among a string of other Canadian grain cars & was the 1st one I've seen. A bonus was it's being clean & grafitti free.

On Sunday, it was this power house:

Saturday night we went over to my nephews to celebrate the ladies birthdays. That's my wife, cousin & my nephews wife. All there birthdays being in August. It was a very nice evening with pizza, salad & lots of wine. The wife picked up some more gift cards for the audio books she listens to.

Today was our usual shopping & errands day, but we were out & about longer than we usually are. The wife wanted to go to a shopping outlet that's about 45 minutes south of us. What for, just socks. But to be honest, we both need them. Of course, that meant besides eating breakfast out this morning, we also had to stop for lunch. Which was okay because I had a good pot roast sandwich along with french fries covered in gravy. I do sometimes wonder why her favorite stores are always on the other side of the county, if not in a different county. But I'm smart enough not to ask about that. Will probably spend all day tomorrow doing laundry. I did manage to get one coat of paint on the new interior doors last week, & will now aim at getting the 2nd & final coat of sometime this week. So have a good one & stay safe.

Ah Ha!! So its you, Ray that started the riot at your Wal-Mart.

Nah!  I haven't been inside a Mal-Wart in over 15 years...  Last time I did the routine I was in Tops Friendly Market (Regional Grocery store).  The check out clerk just started at me for a second and then broke up completely, but the poor 30 something lady behind me with her bored husband, I thought was going to freak out.  She thought I was nuts!  Well I am but in a nice way.  Her husband was laughing so hard I thought he was never going to get his breath back...  I calmed the lady down and assured her it was just a joke, but don't think she believed me. Smile, Wink & Grin

OK, back to w*rk!
