I used to climb up on ladders with a running chain saw and cut branches. I did that because I thought it was safer than trying to start a chain saw at the top of a ladder. Now, I won't go up a ladder with anything more complicated than a pair of gloves. If something more complicated than cleaning out gutters needs to be done, I'll pay someone younger and more agile to do it.
I've got a long pole with a branch chopper on the end. Basically, it's one of those curved-blade choppers, short blades, long handles, but instead of the long handles one blade is actuated by a rope. The pole is about 10 feet long, and I can get to fairly high branches with it while keeping my feet firmly on the ground.
I've got a 5-foot ladder and an 8-foot ladder. Both are wood, and neither is particularly stable. When we move, I'll probably take the short one and leave the long one. If I need that much ladder, I will buy a new one that's more stable.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Morning all. Kind of a mixed bag here weatherwise. Sun/Rain/Thunder/Sun. Not all that warm like yesterday. It was glorious all day except.......
Some gal rearended me in my pride and joy Firebird Trans Am. I stopped for a yellow light and she blasted me at 60 KM/hr. She said she was looking at something else. I expect playing with her stupid smart phone. Anyway, her sunrunner is a write off. The Bird doesn't look too bad but I suspect it's worse than it looks. I'm going to be some ripped if the insurance company does a write off on it since it's 20 years old but in MINT condition with abouy 45K miles on it.
The only good news is no one was hurt. I'm pretty stiff and sore this morning but nothing serious.
My day will be spent running around getting 3 estimates and talking to my insurance co. She was at fault and got a "Driving with undue care and attention" charge for her troubles.
So, off I go to make the rounds.

Ahhhh, Ken, on the tree limbing, Hire it done! I have some personal experience on that kind of thing, and my advise is, HIRE IT DONE!!! No I don't want to go into detail except to say I was about 30 at the time and it involved a trip to the Emergency room, 4 stiches, and 18 butterfy bandages to close it up. Since that time, unless the branch is on the ground already, I don't cut it up. I don't take it off the tree. And, I had quite a bit of experience dropping trees and limbs prior to that time. I will no longer drop a tree either. I have had a couple of friends who ended up seriously hurt in those type of, "Opps! I thought the tree would fall the other way" things. Too much can happen wrong when you don't have the proper training, experience, and equipment to do it safetly! When I was in the emergency room the nurse who saw me first (and was a friend of my wife who also worked there) took one look at me and said, "Tried to saw off the wrong limb, huh?" At the time I did not think it was funny! All told, I was very, very lucky!
I slept in this morning... Would have stayed in bed another hour except I needed to get up and give Blackie his morning pill. Will finish the lawn today, clean some house (Wow, does it need it!), and will go to a Scout Troop meeting tonight. I am commissioer for that troop and haven't made a visit in a few months. This week is my last chance to visit before camp.
Sun is trying to peek out from behind the clouds every once in a while here in the Finger Lakes, so I best make hay while the sun shines... Catch you all later!

I gotta agree, I love the old cars that were around before my time. THe 1950's and 1960's cars looked the coolest. I'm 22 years old, the age when guys are supposed to love cars and well....I cannot stand any cars, they are all hideous carbon copies of each other. Where's the detail? Where's the identity, where is the artwork? Do we really have to sacrifice artwork for eficentcy? To me, a Toyota camry looks like a Ford Sedan.

Good morning. The eye exam went very well. The doc assures me that the discomfort I'm experiencing is due to pollen related allergies. My eyes are fine. In fact much of the diabetes related damage that there was at the exam last year has healed and there's very little damage now. While I was at it I had her do a complete eye exam and got my prescription updated.I also paid my phone bill. It was a whopping $30 for the entire year. The Magicjack is the perfect home phone system for me. It couldn't be any simpler to use. Plug it into a USB port then plug my phone into it and start making calls. All my calls in the US (including Alaska, Hawaii, territories) and Canada are free and I have many of the features of the more expensive VOIP plans. Call forwarding, free pinless conference calls, call waiting, caller ID, voice-mail via email and more. Can't beat that with a stick.

JIMMY:you are so right about the cars. they all got caught up in the " aerodynamic" look, to improve and meet guidlines for fuel efficiency, that they all start to look alike! Only places are different are the interiors, and they are all starting to look like "cockpits" to me! I like ROOM in a vheicle's inside, like my minivan!
ladders.yeah KEN if you are that heavy, {i thought you we more like me at 250} don't fool with the multi-use ladder.I find the "maximum weight limit" is usually UNDERSTATED. I don't trust most "max weight 250lbs" anymore either.

Ouch I just got a call from my insurance company who informed me that the other drivers insurance is expired and has been for several months...
I've talked to her father who assures me that he personally paid for her insurance a week ago but wasn't sure what company..... Right, this is starting to sound a little stinky. I then tried to call the driver at the number she provided to the police and guess what? It's a wrong number so what do I do.
I called the police and told them the above facts and they are most intrested to say the least. I'm now waiting on a call back from the attending officer.
The driver of the vehicle will be in big trouble now for making a false declaration on her insurance plus if Daddy doesn't come up with the $2,000 to fix my car, I'll be taking her to small claim court. Not that it will do me any good considering she is a 25 yr old college student who is just working for the summer.
What a pain in the tush.
Why can't people just follow the law?????????????

Sounds like the other driver should be prosecuted for causing the collision, for lying about her phone number, and being uninsured. ... Keep us informed.
Ray - Thanks for the information on the Arcade and Attica RR. I saved the link & might change our usual scheduled wine run this fall to take advantage of their schedule. I use I86 going back & forth to Seneca Lake, but it wouldn't be a big deal to use I90 coming home. It looks like something worth doing.
Dennis - Sorry to hear what you got caught up in with the car. I've been there, so I know how frustrating it can be. I kept getting the run around, & it was for a much smaller amount than your damages. After about a month, I talked to a friend who was a state constable & he paid 1 visit to the office where the guy worked. The guy decided to write out a check on the spot. It's a shame people have to jump through hoops to get satisfaction sometimes.
On the new IPhone front, great progress in learning what it can do. I have another workshop scheduled for Thursday evening at the Apple store on using the ICloud. Meanwhile, I'm surprised at the productivity it provides as well as just fun things. Because my bank supports mobile banking, I'm able to deposit checks from home just by taking a photo of them. I like the idea of not having to sit in line for the drive thru teller. I always seem to get behind someone who takes forever to do whatever the heck it is their doing. Now I kind of regret not getting one sooner. At least my niece & nephews aren't laughing at me any more.
Nice photos of the tugs. I should try to get some soon & post them for those interested. I live very near the Emsworth Locks & Dam. Which is the first dam you run into on the Ohio River leaving Pittsburgh. It's closed now, but Dravo used to have a shipyard here on the Ohio & I watched many a tug & barge being built. It does look like someone is building them there again, but I don't know who.

I am restoring aColeman 200A single mantel lantern, and just finished a Clayton-Lambert torch. The torch was completely back with carbon and crud when I received it. Who would have known what a jewel was underneath all that.

In the event of an accidetn, always try to get as much info, including plate #; description of car, etc for the other, cause if all isn't right, they will lie. not sure what your laws are like up there. The police generally don't liek being made fools of!
1}I did once hit deer {he/she isn't paying for any damage but I found out the "act of God" {or of nature} DIDN'T exclude me form a nice rate hike!
2} I hit a kid on a motorscooter...Story here is he came barrelling out of the woods perpendicular to me and I hit him thusly in the side, broke [shattered] the leg betwen the bike and my grill! now his firend had just come through the woods ahead of him, but I didn't expect a second one and already had my brakes on. Kid WAS: SKIPPING school; bought the bike form another kid when his mother and Step-father nixed the idea and told him NO; he was out horsing around in the woods when they shot out in front of me; thusly had no ownership/insurance papers in his name. SO: the cop on the case said to the other cop that "he must have insurance it is registered with current sticker" BUT: the kid whom he bought it from HAD the insurance on the registered bike IN HIS NAME. So, GUESS WHO got the ding? because the kid who bought it didn't yet have the paper proving he bought it, had just given over cash and went joy riding skipping school, He DID NOT get the ding. Later on in life, though his shattered leg will ache him and he will tell the weather by it! Oh, yeah, and he got INTO SOME MAJOR TROUBLE with his mother and stepfather!!! My insurance came out OK. a neighbor hwo haerd the crash asked if I wanted to call the police, I said "yes", she then sat with the kid laying on the ground with his leg all askew calming him until they arrived.
3} I had driven a friend in HIS truck on which HE had insurance to a DWI meeting using HIS gas. I swerved to avoid an animal and hit a tree branch cracking the windshield and MY INSURANCE got dinged because i was the driver! "the insurance goes with the driver", I was told, NOT with the vehicle? then why do we carry insurance on the vehicles then??? shouldn't we be carrying insurance in the drivers?
So: we are both owners individually of our vehicles, but each is insured to drive the other vehcile, adn NO ONE drives ours, and we won't drive other's vehicles ANYMORE. ANY accident will involve the police, first thing to look at is plate #, second color/make of car, and call police if possible.
well, in other news, My back has eased up some, hopefully i can sleep tongiht well.

Work Front Paul was being a total Cabosses today! I think part of it was due to another sales person was there was a toatl Chatter Box. At one point Paul said he would give me $10.00 to keep Carey away from him. That did not keep me from getting a good doose of his Cabosseing.

Jimmy I am with you on that as far as new cars. If I won the Mega Millions there is not really a new car out there that I want. While I like the new Challanger and Mustang it not quite the same. What I rather do is buy a older Challanger and replaces the engine with a current Hemi, Over Drive, Stiffen the chassis, Up Grade the supsuion (spell check), Better Brakes and add some morden safty fetarues.
Tree Front Don't worry about me trying to go to high up! I am not as dumb as I type! About the highest I would go is 6 foot at my feet, maybe 8 foot. More than likely I will go with the shorter ladder, 10 foot, it is cheaper anyway.

Good evening. The outside temp is 72 with off and on thundershowers. My eye exam went well. The diabetes damage that was detected last year has mostly healed. I had the doc update my prescription as I intend to get new glasses this year. The pair I have are at least several years old and while the left lens still sharpens the vision for that eye the right lens is woefully lacking.A string of intense thunderstorms came through earlier and knocked the power out for only a few seconds around 2pm. However the cable was out until just about an hour ago. That means no internet service.I had dinner at my fathers place today. Amish corn and chicken soup with Ritz crackers.Couldn't get the wound vac dressing changed today due to the weather so that'll be done tomorrow. This dressing is a good one and is holding up well so there's no problem with that.Nothing else done today except watching a couple of movies.Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

I had plans to get some lengths of stripwood to start on the engine house, but I don´t feel like leaving home today. I am in no rush, so postponing it has no effect.
I am still not sure what color to choose for the engine house. Heavily weathered bar red? Or just aged and weathered wood - like the docks?

Good morning or should I say wet morning. It's 64° with 100% humidity. The high will be 85° with a fair chance of rain. with Got woke up early this morning by a band of intense and dangerous thunderstorms moving through the area. The rain and effects were heavy but not quite to the point of being severe. I don't know how much rain we got but it was a lot. We're still getting some heavy rain here but the worst has passed.So far the only two items on my list of things to do is to stay dry and wait on the Home Health nurse to call. My eyes still feel weird from being dilated yesterday and they're still somewhat sensitive to bright light. An item of good news is that I don't see any water seeping in around my bedroom window.
Ulrich: I would pick the weathered "barn red" I think you were alluding to. WHy? no particular reason, except that with ALL the wood the same weathered washed out gray, you MIGHT want some color on the layout! I DO realize when I lived on Cape Cod, that many of the houses were all that same weathered look shingled siding, and they DID all "look alike". That is one reason I would opt for a colored building! "gray drab" kinda gets to you affter awhile!
Went to Wally WOrld. Sorry, but NO $25 wifis at my store..the cheapest 300N is $50. well $46.99 plus taxes -easy $50! i just looked, they have several options ranging up to about $199 for them. i DUN'T {to quote Ricky Ricardo} think We need a $200 banger!

Jeffrey: glad t o hear the patchworking is holding..would hate to see you develop a mold problem, develop pneumonia and die...I know you have the A/C, but have you considered a dehumidifier? we have two working ones now, one in the LR and one in the hall. Running them only for about 6-7 hours a night every other night, we still pull out 1/2-3/4 buckets full of water EACH! It helps keep the closed-in, a/c running "musty smell" we get down if we are not carefull this time of year. One should suffice for you. The newset one we have set down to a 30% humidity-desired setting as we found it would not run and therefore not draw out water if set at 60%, the low end of the "comfort zone" according to my humidistat! the new one works on drawing auto matically to the setting it is set at. The older one is set to run constantly, a setting the newest one does nto have. We wondered WHY we had not a single drop of water and thought the new one was defective and were about to return it when i cranked it down and heard the compressor kick on. Then It drew out water alrighty!
Just sayin', think about it, It may help keep down moisture seeping in you can't see!
well, off for a nap to rest my back, I don't want tio over do it today! I have to be VERY careful not doing so!

It has been an early one for me as my wife had a doctor appointment at 6:30. He does start early. At least there wasn't much traffic getting there. Neither of us are what you would call 'morning people' so it seems like noon now even though it is only 8:30.
Dennis, sorry to hear about the T/A but I would agree with Ken in that 2 grand isn't much damage but then again when it is your 'baby' any damage is too much. I had my 2000 Volvo S70 rear-ended in 2011 and the damage was first estimated at $4500 even though the only visible damage was a broken tail light, cracked bumper and a very small dent. Once they opened it up there was a lot more so they wrote it off.
I actually ran a train last night for about 10 minutes which is the most model RR time I have put in for several weeks. I think I drive my wife nuts when I run the U2g as I use the whistle a lot. It can be 'played' so that the end blast has a different sound and it is the correct one for that loco too.
Well we will be heading out to the yard later as I have been informed that several shrubs aren't in the right location and must be moved.
Ken, good luck with the tree trimming. It really helps if you have a limbing saw or maybe you could borrow one. If you plan on using the saw on a different tree, put bleach on it to prevent transferring any diseases. I have to trim a branch off a crabapple tree in our yard so will be doing a similar job. I'll saw off the small branches first as it is amazing how much those branches weigh and how fast they can come down. I will just use a step ladder but I do have an extension ladder to get on the roof. I agee with the others on getting one that is strong enough.

Good morning. Cloudy and drab, but only "showers" in the forecast. Tonight is hockey night.
Got my perscription straightened out. CVS kept telling me they didn't have the perscription, and the doctor's office said they sent it and re-sent it. Turns out, they sent and re-sent the earlier perscription for a half-dose, and CVS wouldn't fill that because the old one hadn't been used up yet. So, the office messed up on the dosage, but why wouldn't CVS tell me that, instead of "we didn't get any perscription at all?"
I pulled the other 3 old Mantua streamliner passenger cars out of service for painting. I've got them all apart, and one of them is washed and tape-masked for primer. I hope to get them all primed Wednesday and painted Thursday. There's something satisfying in taking old stuff like this and bringing it back to life.
Dennis, I'm sad about your car, too, and the grief you're going through with the insurance. Does your own insurance have "uninsured driver" coverage? It's an add-on, but everybody should have it. For one thing, we are close to New Hampshire where insurance, believe it or not, is optional, and there are increasing numbers of drivers who have no licenses, registration or insurance because they are here illegally.
Ulrich, I've got to agree with Galaxy on the paint for your engine house. Heavily-weathered barn red is best. That will give you a bit of color without looking out of place against the weathered gray wood. If you want a "new" building, go with white with black shutters, but a steam railroad wouldn't use white.

Galaxy - I own the modem as well as the WiFi router. The modem was free of charge when I signed up with my Internet provider years ago. When it broke down 2 years ago, I got the latest model, again free of charge. They even sent someone around to install it! The WiFi router I have is a Cisco router, which I bought when we moved into this place. It was about $ 60 at that time. It may not be the fastest one, but for my needs it is OK.

Today is..... ah... one of those days here where the deffinition "If you don't like the weather, jusrt wait a minute" describes it well. Most of the time it is just dark, gloomy, and cloudy out there.
I shall send some time cleaning house today. Then I have to drive to my sister's house to load her lawn mower into the back of the PiP and take it to the Menonite small engine repair and sales place near Penn Yan to get it back up and running for her once again. She somehow broke the cable thingie that you have to hold on to start and run the mower. Well, she said it stopped working, so she had a nieghbor guy (whom she dislikes with a passion and the feeling is mutual) come over to "fix" it for her. he pulled the whole thing off the mower while playing with it, so...... This is a $125 mower she has already spent $200 repairing over the last couple years... I'm wondering what this will set her back? I also will drop off a couple checks to the Big local Bank in Canandaigua to be put in the MLK 501c3 account while I am there.
Ulrich, I will third the use of "Barn Red" on the station. A touch of dark red will give the scene a nice look and break up the weathered wood of the dock, etc.

Been fiddling with my 2 BLI C30-7s. One one fine, the other likes to stall on some turnouts. I cleaned the electrical contact areas with a pipe cleaner (outside bearing) and swapped the trucks entirely between the 2. If the one that stalled works fine, then it's the truck. But since both locos are out of warranty (BLI's is only 1 year), I'll do what a friend in the club suggested and use NWSL washer to remove some play from the trucks...
I got my 3 Athearn RTR boxcars that I only paid $15 for. All three cars would be over $20 a piece if bought from a store. They are in good shape, except for some stirrups are missing (broke). I'll replace them with metal ones when I get a drill bit.
T/A Dennis, Sucks about your Trans Am. For a car that is 20 years old you have really low mileaage. My mustang is also 20 years old, but it has over 241k miles (and I still race it from time to time). My mother's Edge is only 4 years old but has close to 70k miles already...

Ken, I kind of agree with you on the new cars thing. But my by the time you'd buy a old challenger and fix it up to modern standards, you'd probably have spent more than buying a new car and souping it up. However not many people will have older challengers that are up to modern standards. Personally, If I had the money i'd either:
A. Get an 05-08 mustang (roller or V6), swap in the motor, electronics, suspension, etc. from a 2011+ mustang GT. Remove the back seat and maybe add some tweaks.B. Find a 1969 Mustang Fastback, put the new 5.8 in it, newer 6-speed automatic with a stall converter, stiffen up the suspension, etc.C. Find a Ford GT, maybe stick in the new 5.8D. Put together a GT40 kit/replica. use a 351 cleveland, and run with it

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
