Todd:That is what happens when you get older, you tend to forget things, like one's own b-day! Guess one could say you "MARCHed into the world"!!!

It's late but Happy B-Day to Todd and Richard and anyone else whose b-day is recent or coming up!

Well anyways: did my morning run of errands used my 70cent discount on gas and saved a bundle on a nearly full fillup. Gas is regualrly about $3.75 here now for the 87octane gas. It'll be well over $4 a gallon and over near to $5 l bet this summer. We have been spoiled of late with lower prices, time to pay the piper!

The I did the pharmacy for scripts.

Then did the breaqd store outlet for bread..there wasn't much at free bread day yesterday and I needed hamburger buns for my lunch, and English crooks and nannies muffins, which all never show up on free bread day.

SO I did one other errrand and came home. Errands not done, though, have to drop the KIA off for the fix of the recalls.that will be late toninght after MOH gets home form work.

Well, now to regular chores around the house.

QUESTION: have any of you seen/heard tell of solid very dark brown or black mice? or do we have other critters in the house? They are also "braver" an scatter around daytime in broad daylight and seem immune to the traps we set. Just wondering.

MAYBE I work in the train room/junque room later...

later

Galaxy - 87 octane gas? That has not been around myneck of the woods for years. All our cars require 95 octane, some even 98 octane.

Remember memorizing scripture in Sunday School?  Well one might save your life....

ACTS 2:38

A woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services,
when she was startled by an intruder.
She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled:

'Stop! Acts 2:38!' (Repent and be Baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ,
so that your sins may be forgiven.)

The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and
explained what she had done.

As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar:
'Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.'

'Scripture?' replied the burglar. 'She said she had an Axe and Two 38's!'

Must be a different measurement scheme over there.  Here 87=Regular, 89=Mid-Grade, and 91=Premium.  (Except in Utah where regular is 85.)  98 octane is racing fuel.  Then again, maybe you are drivng a race car?

Evening. No good about it. I went out this morning to get some laundry done. A couple hours watching TV then pack it up and bring it home. Right? WRONG! I got the clothes in the wash then my father roped me into working on his yellow MTD Yardman. How many ways can you spell junk? We couldn't even get a click out of it. Charged the battery and now we could get a very healthy clack from the starter solenoid.Nothing from the starter. I checked at the starter for power. Zip,zero, bop-kiss! So I pull the solenoid. Are you ready for this!? One of the terminals was burnt clean off! Well that called for a trip to town. We'd get a new battery for it as well. Stopped at the other side of the shed to check the red Murray. The battery wouldn't even take a charge. It was deader than my right foot, and that's pretty dang dead! So, two batteries. We got everything and I was stuck with putting most of it on. I got the yellow Yardman going. My father took it for a test run so everybody could see the work "he" did. I started on the red one. Just needed a battery change, oil and gas. It started righted right up. Later he was talking about all the work we did on them and then it was all the work 'he' did on them. By the time we were finished I was pretty wiped out. We had chili dogs for dinner the I rested there until my back stopped screaming so much, collected my laundry which was done then headed home. I just struggled into the door, put the clothes down and set to work on this post.

I won't be awake in about an hour so it's time for me to say good night and see y'all tomorrow folks.

Well, well, well!

Spring is sprung,The grass is riz
I wonderz where da diners iz???

Ah, I hear something....  Hmmmm, only Jeffrey sawing wood in the back....  Zzz Zzz Zzz Zzz

Busy day around here in the Finger Lakes today too.  Took me all morning to get the kitchen floor vacummed and mopped.  Even had to run to gthe store to get more of the mopping fluid stuff I been using.  Next time I need to get down on my hands and knees and actually scrub the darn thing.  Still looks dirty, but a bit better than it was.  While I was out, I stopped at the dollar store and picked up more syrofoam cups for the Meet.  Gotta keep them old pharts awake somehow ya know.  I will bring my own cup so I don't have to throw away anything more than a paper napkin for the donut....

Drove to my sister's house and fed the kitties.  Clim is starting to not look terrified when I peek into his nest area and say hello to him.  By next Thursday, maybe he will come out and let me pet him again.  He has made himself right at home as an indoor cat....  Got home and did a bit more cleaning then headed over to my son's house to follow them over to the school for granddaughter #1's concert.  They did a great job and show that the first grade have been learning all the right things for first grade music....  Granddaughter got to play some of the Orff instruments and switched instruments several times during the piece.  She had fun and was grinning the whole time.  Grandpa got a big hug after it was over... Smile, Wink & Grin

After I came home I had a quick bite to eat and then headed down to the train room.  Glued the support cable to the sign and the building after saying a few nasty words...  The Blacksmith's shop is officially done.  Just have to complete the scenery around the building and the area and I will be finished!  Also got quite a bit done on the King Post Bridge tonight too.  photos of both projects before the end of the weekend, I promise.

Hope you all are enjoying Spring so far.  We have a black-ice advisory here in the Finger Lakes as it sn*wed this evening, melted, and is now refreezing on the roads.....  Got up to 40°F today but is now back down to 32°F with a low of 28° overnight.

Prayers for all in need...  Too many to list you all!

Hello Jeff, Ray and Barry.

Where are the other Diners this evening?

I'll have cookies and decaf please. Then I'll sit with Jeff Barry and Ray for a while.

Other than running trains a while, I have no model railraoding to report.  Shelley and I are still busy doing taxes for people. We're retired number crunchers, and we hear "You're retired. You're not doing anything." ... Sigh

Also, we have been booking reservations.. We already have reservations for next months AZ trip. In June we will go to southern CA for a wedding. .... I don't like flying, but that's what we will do.

Happy Model Railroading!

Good Morning!

Our Spring weather is back to normal, a warm and wez drizzle of ra*n Crying

I´ll be going to pick up my order of lumber for my benchwork this morning - I may even be able to start building it today. There is an awful lot of w*rk waiting ... How come I can hardly wait to do it? Cool

No difference in measurement, but those small engines we have in our cars require high octane gas. Regular, which was at 89 octane as well, is not marketed anylonger.

Have a good one!

Good Morning All'

34F and overcast as usual. Sun did come out for a time yesterday and it actually got niceish. No s**w predicted til Tuesday for now so a brief respite. I'll just have a regular please, Zoe.

Ray - we're still patiently waiting for new pics of the shop and surrounding terrain. Hope your meet goes well.

Ulrich - muust be some difference in emission requirements between here and there. Of course leaded fuel here now  is for off-road use only (racing) but we have unleaded pump fuel in 87 89 and 93 RON octane. My Fiesta which is a small motor here ran best on 91 - better mileage and noticably better driveability. The turbo Focus ST i drive now uses 93 though I may experiment once the weather gets warmer. We can get unleaded at the track all the way through 108 though for the most part the race cars that need unleaded use 100 or 104. The unfortunate thing here is the corn lobby has gotten in and most of the fuel carries alcohol in it (usually up to 10%) which creates havoc with older fuel systems and rubber parts. FWIW here in Connecticut the premium 93 is the same cost as diesel at 4.14/ U.S. gallon. Some states charge even more of a differential for diesel negating any gain in savings. The diesel is 40 cetane and low sulfer but not the clean diesel you get in Europe thus we also do not get many of the better European diesels here as they can not run on our version.

No train progress but I have nearly wrestled the Kenworth back together. All week fixing the APU and associated covers along with lost of Advil. Ah, the joys of self employment.

Speaking of, I'll just take my coffee and mosey back into the shop. Cheers, J.R.

yard progress - the tracks laid out and the freight house mocked up.

Where are the other Diners this evening?

Long gone to the Land of Nod, in my case.  From the time-tags, that's way past my bedtime.  I still have to rise at oh-dark-fifty for work.  And, with the clock change, heavy clouds and setting moon, it was really dark this morning.

Train show this weekend, no skiing, and it's time to settle down and do those dang taxes.  It's still ski season, and it's entirely likely that this is the last weekend I'll have until the Fateful Fifteenth, the Ides of April.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Yeah, right! I was looking forward to an easy day yesterday. Instead I find myself up to my hips in tractors and I'm having to do all the work. I got my father to hold a wrench on a nut and set a battery into the battery box of the yellow tractor. Other than that he bought the parts and did the test drive. The work on the red tractor I did myself with no help and very basic tools. And he wondered why I was so tired at the end of the day. All that getting up and down didn't do my back any favors. It's letting me know right now that I screwed up. Getting down on the ground is easy. Getting up, that's hard.

Morning. Can't say it's good as I'm in a lot of pain this am. It's 45° with 99% humidity and it's cloudy. The high will be 78°.

My one task for today seems easy on the face of it. Test a rebuilt disk drive. Problem is it has a connector my //e isn't set up for. I have a computer with the required interface card. It's (you guessed it) in the closet. That means getting that computer and a monitor out of the closet and setting them up. Yeah, right! The monitor will be on the floor and the computer on my lap and the disk drive (it's a heavy beast) on top of the computer. That'll probably put my legs to sleep. Guess what. When you have impaired feeling in your legs you can't tell when they're asleep. You go to get up and there's nothing there. The degree of what happens depends on how far you get. That usually ranges from falling to the knees to a total face plant. I try to avoid the face plant if at all possible. The last one would have scored me a gold medal at the Olympics.

Other than that I have nothing planned outside of a lot of time on the bed watching TV.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the breakfast pile please. Thanks.

Galaxy- Sounds like you have a Vole. They are harmless, don’t chew like mice, only eat bugs and yes are a bit bolder. The little guy is really looking for a way out of the house. Trust me. He has no interest in what is inside. Unless you have a bug problem he will actually starve to death if he doesn’t get out. Google Vole and I think you'll find I'm right. Or...you have a brave black mouse.

Garry- The number one thing I hear retired people say is they don’t know when they had time to w*rk. And the number one thing I hear from w*rking people is some version of the same thing you hear, “since you’re retired you have all the time in the world.” Or how about the references to naps. I very rarely get a nap do to those people who joke about me getting naps! But hey. The ones who ask a lot, pay so…Yesthat’s ok. Funny the ones who make the biggest deal about free time are the ones who think I should do things for them because I “need something to do or I’ll go stir crazy”.Grumpy Let me try stir crazy.

WElp, got some tools to get down into the trainroom after the flooring job…, I’m thinkin I really did “help” Brenda do it, much the way Jeff “helped” his Dad fix the tractors. No mention of pay, but then again, I never asked to begin with so….my fault. I’m not complaining I guess. She’s happy and we got to do something “together” and after all, she did say can you help me if I need it. Anyway, I’m gonna try and do some straightening up in there first. Kill two birds with one stone. Mainly as an excuse to be down there and straighten up the trainroom.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Unless you bait your trap with a live bug I don't think you're going to catch anything. As mentioned previously what you desribed sounds like a vole. Give the varmint a way out and he'll take it.

Good morning everybody. .... Oatmeal and OJ, please.

JR ... Wow! ... You certainl;y have made progress on the new layout. Glad to see it.

Mr. B .... Glad you are going to a train show.

Ulrich ... Good to hear you are workin on the layout. I don't really care for the small cars with small engines.

Todd, Jeff and others ..... I started the new year with new years resolutions to do my stuff. After nearly 3 months, I spent a lot of time doing other people's stuff instead. When people finally reach retirement they have a long list of their own stuff. Also, they don't have more time because they are closer to the ends of their lives. As for naps, I take medications which result in more time needed for sleeping. ..... Oh well....

Happy Model Railroading!

Good Morning,

OK I surrender, winter is the king. Today we are to experience a high of 1F with a  -20F windchill. Yes the joy of spring is really an inspiration or a rude hoax.

J.R. When I worked as a sales rep for Sunoco in the early '70s they sold the highest octane gas available at a pump in Canada and that was 104 when other companies had only 100 for their highest. Needless to say we got most of gas purchases from guys with muscle cars or imports. My friend had a '67 Vette coupe with a modified 427 and that was the only gas that thing would run properly on but run properly is a matter of opinion as it idled at 1100 rpm and was lumpy at that. Mashing the throttle at 60 mph was an exciting or scary experience, depending on your point of view. It got 4 mpg.

My current car is supposed to have a diet of 91 octane and they charge a 10 cent/litre premium which is rather steep in my opinion. It is a Volvo.

Well I finally finished all 13 buildings and I put away the paints, hopefully for some time. My little town looks good and I think I acheived a more urban feel for this layout which was my objective. I ordered a gas station as no town is right without one so I suppose I'm not quite done yet with the buildings.

Our tax filing deadline here is April 30th. I used to do our taxes but I hired a fellow for my mothers estate which then involved my taxes so I have had him do them since that time 3 years ago. Now with retirement there are some other not so straight forward issues so I will have him do them for a couple more years. The cost is minimal as he does taxes for something to do. He is a retired stock broker.

We have now paid all the deposits for our trip to Africa next year so we are now fully commited. Some might say we should be committed considering the cost but you only live once and this is likely the last time we will have the resources to do such a thing so why not. There is absolutely nothing like safari for excitement and adventure. To me life is more about what you do than have and the best memories my wife and I have are of trips we have taken especially the safari ones.

Look at that it nearly time for morining coffee, then I think a little train time is in order followed by Sea Patrol at 11. That isn't something I will be on but merely a TV show I like. It is an Australian production.

Talk to you soon,

CN Charlie

Sounds like the story of my life. Oh, you're home all day. You have plenty of time to do X, Y, Z for me, and I need it done yesterday. I could tell them where they can stick X, Y and Z with spikes attached. Due to my diabetes I have very little energy and my meds make that worse. So I have very little time each day to get things done, and yes I am retired, since 2004 when I was forced into medical retirement.

My van was made to use higher octane fuel. However, everything non-essential was stripped off the engine and the electronic ignition disconnected at the source and the distributor replaced with one that has a condensor and points. You could do that with many vehicles made over 20+ years ago. It runs just fine on 87 octane as long as I don't put a heavy load on it.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just my dark roast coffee and a couple sour cream glazed donuts you have over there....  That ought to get my blood sugar up for the day.  I have been cleaning house this morning.  Well, running the vacume cleaner a bit at least.  Most everything is packed for the NMRA Meet tomorrow (I hope).

Currently 30°F outside with a few little white flakey thingies floating around...  Sigh  Supposed to get all the way up to 40F this afternoon.  Then it will go back down to 29°F with rain and icing overnight so I can get on the road to drive to Rochester before th sun comes up tomorrow!  Depressing to say the least.

I best go down cellar and see how deep the water is this morning.  That time of year...

Catch you all later!

Unfortunarely, not yet. My friend is busy the next few days, so we just went to pick up the stuff, which is now resting in his garage. Which means no start before Easter! Crying

Tee hee:

RETIREMENT:

I am medically "retired" as of 2003. I, too, Have "nothing to do all day, every day"....for having "nothing to do", I sure have LOTS to do!! I rarely get a day to do NOTHING {except when I have a migraine headache or am sick as a dog, or my back is severely punishing me for something I did}. MOH complains about working and not having much time off. HA! althought I technically should not have to go out everyday {as I don't work} I usre have a lot of errands to run and places to go!!

FOrtunately, due to my back being in such bad shape, I don't get too many "can you do this's" that involve hard labor"...

Well, the Kia is done and back home . I called my father to help me to go get it...anohter person who is retired and "has nothing to do all day"...He does NOT go out in bad winter weather any more and in the summer is constantly gone "doing things".

Been at the laundry.. a chore that never ends. The dishes were all finished off before 6am this morning, and I have yet to dirty one again.

I don't know why my brain failed me..it took me literally 5 minutes to even come up with the word "morning" for the morning post!

Here are some "quotable quotes":

Life cannot be classified in terms of a simple neurological ladder, with human beings at the top; it is more accurate to talk of different forms of intelligence, each with its strengths and weaknesses. This point was well demonstrated in the minutes before last December's tsunami, when tourists grabbed their digital cameras and ran after the ebbing surf, and all the 'dumb' animals made for the hills. -B.R. Myers, author (b. 1963)

An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy. -Spanish proverb

Ahhhh!  Ehhhh!

Feeling like crap!

Due to a very mild winter...northern Nevada is in bloom way early. The weeds are spewing loads of crud into the air. My allergies are throttled up like an overloaded SD70 storming Tehachapi...and antihistamines aren't working too well.

And I thought spring in Pennsylvania was bad...SURPRIZE!

Think I'll order some high octane ice tea...the Long Island type.

If I'm going to feel like crap...I may as well do it up right.

I know what you mean. When I was at my fathers place yesterday he had gone outside to cut some fresh rosemary. He brought it in and put it on the coffee table not six feet from me. My sinuses instantly went into overdrive! I was beyond miserable. I told my stepmother to put it in another room that could be closed, bag it up or get it out of the house. She exercised the last two options. She sealed them up in a Glad freezer bag and took them to her son (their intended destination from the start) so he could cook up something that required fresh rosemary. You don't get any fresher than picked right out of the back yard. The instant that stuff was bagged up my sinuses started backing down.

Our house is in what used to be an orange grove.  There are still a large number of mature orange trees around and I have a love/hate relationship with them every spring.  The smell of the orange blossoms is amazing.  The pollen from said blossoms, not so much.

Yeah, pears aren't much different. The fruit is great. The pollen is murder!

Never did get around to checking out that disk drive today. Still too sore.

Saw one of my neighbors out washing down the engine in has pickup (small Ranger). I called across and told him that if he does truck engines I have a big greasy 318 he could take a crack at. He laughed.

I was out in the yard earlier inspection the edge of my over-roof as best I can from the ground. I lost my balance and had to turn around and take a step to catch myself. That darn tree (most of it) is still in the yard and I tripped right over it and smacked the side of my head on it hard enough to bring on dizziness and a stellar light show. I've been after my nephew for weeks on end to come and get it. So far he's only taken thirteen feet of the top. I've really lost my patience with that bum! He won't listen to me so I left a message on my fathers answering machine to either talk to him or talk to his parents and tell him to get the lead out of his pants! He makes all kinds of excuses. I don't have time, I'm busy this weekend and it's too important, I'm having friends over, etc. He has time to bum around with his friends, go to parties, drink until the wee hours of the morning, smoke God knows what and work on ATV's for fun but he can't take thirty minutes to move a darn dead tree. Did I mention I'm at the end of my rope with this guy? If I have to move that thing myself I'm parking it right in his yard!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf please...

I hope I have everything done and packed for the meet tomorrow.  Need to be on the road by 7AM so I won't be getting my morning coffee here in the diner.  I was thinking of taking the Blacksmith's shop to the meet to enter in our "Popular Choice" model Contest, but thought better of it.  At this point I would really hate to see it get knocked on the floor or bounced wrong on the way there...  It will be removable so maybe in the Fall I might take it after I have some other stuff I need from this ready to go.

Oh, I did promise some progress photos.... Here is the completed shop siting where it will reside and the beginning of the King Post bridge where It will go.  The King Posts are not yet installed...  I have a lot left to do on it, but here it is so far....

Have a great night.  Prayers for all in need!

Hmm, not much traffic here today. Maybe I put my deodorant on backwards or something.

Nothing additional to report today. Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

it is the 3:20AM "all's well" call!

Morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD SATURDAY MORNING!

Today is Saturday,

March 22nd, 2014!

Healing thoughts,

prayers, energies and

lighted candles for:

johnboy, phil, ulrich,

lexie, friends and neighbors

of diners and for

world peace!

There once was a man named Tom
Who's hair on one side was too long
He combed it across
To cover hair lost
But alas the hair was still gone

A penner of verse named Anon
Has scribbled his odd name upon
Texts of doggerel galore
That aren't worth much more
Than the paper they're written on.

Quotable {mis}quotes:

I have a hard time asking for help...

Sorry you are completely out of the loop...
