Morning fellas!

Coffee and toast if you please.

Beautiful day here today. The heat finally broke and it's a pleasant high 60's to low 70's in the forecast. Just came back in from the orchards, did some more trimming and pruning and didn't break a sweat for the first time in weeks it seems. Plan on being outside for most of the day...sooooo much to do and sooooo little time it seems. What's that song from that country group "Alabama"...hurry to get things done...or something like that? Well, that's how I feel.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day and gets a chance to do some modeling...I'll be jealous but at least someone will be having funYes.

Happy modeling!

Don.

Morning All, HOT, HOT, HOT.

Currently at 0820, it is 75 with an expected high of 105. W**k day for me today, fortunately the store is air conditioned, but it was still very hot in there yesterday. Been too hot to do much when I get home, so the Walthers Brookside Dairy kit, is still waiting for the walls to be assembled. Several other modeling projects are waiting to be worked on, but the heat makes me so tired, when I get home all I want to do is under the ceiling fan with the ac running.

Well best be getting on with my day.

  Prayers to all in need.

Hello people. There are way too many pages stacked up for me to wade through so I will not even try. I see Ulrich is busy with his political aspirations. I hope you are successful. Jeff: I have never seen that old computer so clean as it is now. It looks great! Are you going to sell it?

CLANG!!! OUCH! Vinnie!! Ok, ok! All I did was ask a simple question. I get the message. All you had to do was say no!

There is nothing of note going on in my world lately. I am almost finished with my college. It has been a hard push going through with no breaks or holidays. I can see the business and accounting degree on my wall now.

Hello.

Started adding my D-Day strips to the underside of my Typhoon's wings. I have yet to add the black strips, but have the white spray painted on. There was some accidental overspray, but it's nothing a small amount of touch up paint can't handle.

Hello again.

Finished with the D-Day stripes on the Typhoon. It'll need some touch ups, but it looks good as it is now.

 Evening Dinners!

 Flo, Beer pleases.

Sue does not seem to be feeling any better. I wished they had kept her but from what they told me there was nothing else they could do. All I can do now is hope.

Did work on the Road Runner some more.

Got the rest of the plugs out and dumped Marvel Mystery oil down the holes.

Found a few more things I am not happy with.

 1. Right front rotor is so rusted the wheel will not turn! Bang Head I hope that will be a easy fix.

 2. Then this.

Not super worried, I have fixed worse! Part is $116.00 but first I need to get it running before I worry about that!

Then I got confused! I have never worked well laying on my back with my hands stretched out over my head looking backwards!

Well howdy guys!  Finally stopping in for a visit after a several-month hiatus.  Work and family have been keeping me away from a lot of hobby interests.  Today has been a slow day, especially since its been raining since shortly after we got out of church.  Finally got started on the girl's bedroom (still remodeling the house).  Got the old closet torn out, along with the old carpeting, now all we have to do is patch a couple of holes in the walls, drop 1/4" luan on the floor and the adhesive tiles, then a little paint and that's it and they are in their new room.  THEN comes turning their old room into Michael's new room.

Oh yeah, got new news for y'all, we will have a new little one joining the family in January.  Unknown as to the flavor of the child, but we should know next month.  I haven't been able to do a single model railroad project in the past few months, heck, I have done well to just be able to read my monthly subscription to MRR.  I have been able to check up on the 1:1 CSX railroad as it runs through the area.  There is a new siding just south of Troy, in Brundidge, AL serving a cold-food storage place.  No cars put in yet, but the siding is set and a fence is up around it.  Can't wait to see mechanical reefers being loaded and unloaded in that siding... Always enjoy seeing new business in the area.

Welp, gotta go throw drumsticks on the grill for dinner, I plan to be back a little later to actually read through everything.

Ulrich, as far as the volunteers go, beat them with a hammer and call them dirty names!

Plenty of lightning, thunder and rain today. Vernon Park Rd which is dirt is a muddy mess. It's only saving grace is that there's enough gravel on it to keep vehicles from sinking in or losing traction if the driver isn't acting like an idiot. Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Hello everyone.

Have connections at PennTech tomorrow, and that is going to be a two day affair, so I'll be absent for a little while. Also got the D-Day strips touched up and have the rockets painted on it. Have the overspray painted over and look to get the detail paint on it so I can get those decals on!

Night everyone.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a cup of decaf while I read whats been going on here today....

Had a good crowd out at the museum today.  Got asked some interesting questions, some of which I hadn't a clue on what the answer was, so that was my answer to the people...  One of the Boy Scouts from the Handicapped Troop I work with showed up to do his final requirements for the RR Merit Badge.  Unfortunately I was tied up with another group of people so I said hi and gave him the Boy Scout Handshake, and he went with another docent for a tour.  I will sign off his card for the Merit Badge next time I see him as he just needs to meet with and tell me what he saw and why museums like ours are important.

Have a great night!

morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD MONDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Monday, July 22nd, 2013 {Yes, already!}

I will light the prayer candles at 9 AM for those in need...

MAKE it A GREAT day!!!

Up to Snuff:

Meaning:

Initially, the phrase meant 'sharp and in the know'; more recently, 'up to the required standard'

Origin:

The simple origin:

Today the phrase means anything or anyone who isn't up to some sort of standard of quality. The origin in a way goes back to that also. Snuff is tobacco 'dust'. And, in the old days men carried around pouches of it, with spoons and graters. Soon, commercial mixes were the mainstream and the  real connoisseurs of smoking prided themselves on being able to tell the real, pure grade snuff from the commercial stuff. Someone who couldn't tell the difference between pure quality tobacco and the mixture was said to be "not up to snuff."

The longer in-depth origin:

'Up to snuff' originated in the early 19th century. In 1811, the English playwright John Poole wrote Hamlet Travestie, a parody of Shakespeare, in the style of Doctor Johnson and George Steevens, which included the expression.

"He knows well enough The game we're after: Zooks, he's up to snuff."

&

"He is up to snuff, i.e. he is the knowing one."

up to snuffA slightly later citation of the phrase, in Grose's Dictionary, 1823, lists it as 'up to snuff and a pinch above it', and defines the term as 'flash'. This clearly shows the derivation to be from 'snuff', the powdered tobacco that had become fashionable to inhale in the late 17th century. The phrase derives from the stimulating effect of taking snuff. The association of the phrase with sharpness of mind was enhanced by the fashionability and high cost of snuff and by the elaborate decorative boxes that it was kept in.

The later meaning of 'up to standard', in the same sense as 'up to scratch' (we will see also {tomorrow}: 'start from scratch' began to be used around the turn of the 20th century}

Good morning, everyone.  Massachusetts has cooled down considerably.  Last night I slept with the fan on and no AC needed, for the first time in over a week.  Ahhhh.....

Wife Penny remains in Florida taking care of her parents.  Her Dad banged up his elbow last week, and is now in the hospital having it treated with antibiotics for the infection that developed.  Her mom has mobility issues, and is condo-bound, so someone has to at least bring her food.  These two people are 96 and 92, and they have stubbornly refused to even consider assisted living, which is really what they need.  Hopefully, this incident will make them realize that they're not getting any younger.  They live in a small but pleasant place, right on the ocean, but realistically they simply can't live independently anymore.

I, meanwhile, have been catching up on my recordings of the Tour de France.  A typical stage of the race is 5 or 6 hours long, and since it's in France, there's a time shift so it takes place when I'm at work.  So, I use the magic box beneath the TV and record it.  This year, NBC has taken over the broadcast, and they are 30-40% commercials.  I couldn't sit and just watch it.

And yesterday, since it cooled off and I was bike-psyched, I went for a ride myself.  Only 15 miles or so, and there are no Alps between my house and the center of Concord, MA, but at least I felt some kinship to those intrepid riders out there in the French countryside.

Best wishes to all.

Good morning. It's 75° with 100% humidity. The high will be 92° but will feel like 104°.

Looks like the weather is tapering off. Instead of being hot and wet it'll be just hot. No plans for today. Yesterday I worked on two of the Apple IIe's disk drives, a Franklin Ace10 and an Apple Disk II. The original beige paint on the metal shells was badly cracked, scratched and crazed and in places was just falling off. The shells were removed and stripped, sanded and repainted. They're now primer gray with a heavy coat of Clear Flat.

No layout plans as of yet. I don't intend on doing anything on that until I've recovered from the upcoming amputation and can get around on my own. I don't want to start something now and have to abandon it then pick it up later or have to rip it out and change it due to some new limitation.

Happy Monday Everyone!!Big Smile

Back to the weekly day -to-day, after a weekend spent playing with the kids. Son #2 came up with his fiancee and his best friend Friday night. We played games til 1:30 in the a.m. Cool Then back up early to go pick up #5 at 7:30, the the local VFD flea market where I score 4 nice oak kitchen cabinet for 20 bucks. They will be real sweet in the garage! Then swimming & BBQ from noon til 7, the a different VFD's carnival!! Finally laid my head down at 11 p.m. Yesterday was a day of recuperation!!Stick out tongue

This is what happens when you throw a ball at someone on the diving board!!Laugh

SWMBO has a job interview this morning with the counties only paid Fire Department. Roughly the same weekly pay as the office she w*rks in now, but with a full benefits package. Surprise These days, thats worth its weight in gold! My fingers are crossed BIG time!Big Smile Yes, there is paper to push at the Fire Department too!

Me? Another meeting tomorrow with a potential employer. He had me for a week as a temp/consultant and afterwards we had a 2 hour meeting where I was able to discuss several things that could be changed or new processes implemented that would all improve his bottom line. This also would put me there on a full time basis. I gave him a week to think about it. Friday I stopped by to check on things  and he said he hadn't  had time to think about it. I pointed out that was one of the reasons I gave him for hiring me. He's constantly running!! We'll see come tomorrow! Smile

Til then,,,,I'm in the basement! Smile, Wink & Grin

Well

GOt a migraine starting to work itg's wonders on me.

Was laying down to ease it, but got a call from the insurance man finally...we are coverd for MOH to drive clients around. BUT I increased our coverage some, then to find out for just literally a few dollars more, we could max out the highest coverages insurable, so I said "go ahead". {It Will mean about a $13/month increase in cost, but I think well worth it}. He said there is a big huge concern going on with the un/under/hit and run insurances as there are idiots coming up from NYC who have little or no coverage on the cars they drive and who don't really know how to drive and are causing headaches with accidents. I upped that coverage to $300/$500,000 so we are well covered to the max there. We are coverd to the max for all now.

The reason I am so coverage minded is that I know of person horror stories from friends church members and neighbors when it comes to accidents and claims. I also know what a hospital bill and simple operation costs nowadays, as I have had many such situations. Never hurts to have too much coverage, but will loose your shirt if they come after you with minimal coverage. If they have no or minimal coverage it behooves you ot have the extra high coverage on un/underinsured/hit and run coverage. Hit and runs are also in the increase...probably because the driver either has no insurance, is wanted, or is under the influence and so they try to get away. Such a thing happens and you are conscious, quickly get a good color, make, model and license plate number..even a partial can help police track them down. With the advent of on board cameras taking pictures of all plates nowadays they can usually pick them up FAST.

Well that leaves the home owners to review in the spring for possible increases in liabiltiy coverage. There are discrepancies as to what the park covers and is liable for and what we as the trailer owners are liable for. Basically assume the park will not be liable for anything and the trailer owner WILL be. If the park is not liable by law, they will try to weasel out someway of not beiling liable. Our driveway is not in best shape and the park was supposed to put in new driveways but never did.  If someone falls on it, should be the park's issue, UNLESS it is due to ice or snow and we have failed to de-ice/de-snow  it. If they fall on the stairs going up to our trailer, well that is technically our issue as we are to maintain those. Fortunately we have good strong porch covered steps.Inside our trialer is our issue, too, obviously.

We are still considering an umbrella policy to cover whatever other insurances do not, and you have to be highly covered on other insurances to even be considerd for umbrella coverage. that is "last resort" type coverage, and doesn't cover business applications, such as MOh driving clients around or rental properties {we have none}.

I Know, you just really wanted an insurance tutorial this AM didn't you? Nobody reads this stuff anyway.

Well, I have some things to do IF my headache doesn't get worse and eases with the prescription med i just took.

Later

  Morning All,

Currently it is 75 with an expected high of 101, so another hot w**k day for me ahead.

Did not get out of the store last night till about 45 minutes after closing time. It was still very hot at 6:00 PM and I guess people wanted to stay in the air conditioning.

I may have gotten a little too much sun last Sunday, as I am starting to have patches of dry skin peeling off my body.

Still too hot to w**k on any modeling projects after work, maybe tonight.

Prayers to all in need, especially Ken's, Sue.

Afternoon folks!

Zoe, still haven't had breakfast yet, so I'll have the #2 special, over easy eggs, bacon, Home Fries, and a double order of sourdough toast with lots and lots of dark roast coffee please.  That should do as breakfast and lunch I think...

Fairly pleasant day here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 79°F with a high of 80° this afternoon.  there may be a thunderboomer or two pass by though.  I need to mow lawn again and take another load of stuff over to the Salvation Army Store.  Also need to take a box to the UPS place to send to relatives in Flowidah...  Bunch of photos from my parents collection of their family.

Little by little i am getting the stuff done that has been piling up around here.

Catch you all later!

Already been to town and back. My father was going in so I got a ride with him. First stop, the pharmacy to drop off a list for refills on my meds. Then to Wal-Mart so he could get some frozen shrimp and a couple other items. I got a 1.75 fluid ounce bottle of GO2GLUE. Never tried it before so I have no idea how well it'll work. Back to the pharmacy to pick up the meds then home.

I worked on a clean-up project this morning. An old Quentin 5.25" computer disk drive. Those not interested in this kind of thing can stop reading now.

This particular drive survived a house fire back in 2001-2002. Mostly smoke and water damage. The electronics were trashed so I replaced the those with boards from an old Apple Disk II drive. I didn't know if it would work. It did. The Quentin is after all an Apple Disk II clone. That took care of the inside. Now for the nasty outside. Now I know there are some out there who don't want to see photos of this kind of thing so I'll post links to the photos.

In photo #1 you can see the drive pretty much as I got it. Brown, dirty, nasty, unpleasant to look at.

Fired damaged drive

I removed the shell from the drive. I then scrubbed the shell down with Krud Kutter on a paper towel to remove as much of the dirt and smoke damage as I could. I used a plastic bristle brush and some 91% alcohol to get off what was left then a little more Krud Kutter to do a final clean-up.

Cleaned Drive Shell

I then reassemble the drive and took the final photo. The drive looks and operates like it was brand new.

Howdy everybody.

I won't have much Diner time if any the next few days. We leave tomorrow for our Wisconsin trip. We're getting too much packed into too few days. We can't do it all, so Mr. Nice Guy here will skip the stuff he wants to do so the rest of the family does their stuff. Oh well. Gotta love 'em. .... Yesterday we drove to Elizabethtown to meet Son & DIL to pick up Cincinnati granddaughters for the trip (They drove from Cincy.) . Got home at about midnight last night...... Main trip has not started, but I'm already worn out. .... Was hoping to schedule visits with mrr's, but no such luck this time.

Have a good rest of the week everybody.

Well

got distressing news in the mail. Seems with MOH back working, the Medicaid spend down cost I pay to have it for me is now TRIPLED again. They failed ot calculate it at the alternative method again. I expected it to go up,but not tripled. Then, MOH gets booted off my case, so now has no coverage now. With OBAMACARE, HAVE to have coverage..tis the new law. NEED coverage too, but...with the cheapest I could find is a catestrophic policy for MOH and what I will pay, between medicare and medicaid and to cover us both will COST 45% of our GROSS monthly income!!!! FOr Health care ONLY! ANd we loose our food stamps too.

That is just plain fundamentally wrong on so many levels its not funny.

I have to go in in person to DSS to talk to htem with documentation. the thing is MOH is MAKING LESS now thatn was making last Dec before the job ended in Jan, SO the costs should be below the tripple they are demanding now! {It goes by income}

So I have the Dr for the nerve test in the arm, then off to fight with the electric/gas company {who wnats no money and SHOULD be billing us} then off to DSS to fight the battle there, then to my fathers for a visit.

May have to call the Insurance man and reduce our coverage again.

Living another day to fight another battle/s.

Well, I can look for another source of insurance, but even though they HAVE to take "preexisting conditions" doesn't mean it is any affordable to me to have it.

Went to my fathers place for dinner today. Chili dogs. I chopped up one of the garden grown peppers on mine. Wow! Those things are hot!

Two more disk drives I worked on today are these two Apple compatible Franklins. They are slightly different models but they have identical chassis. The top drive has no write protection so it can write to a disk even it it has a write protect tab on it. The shells of both were stripped and repainted. I made up the drive badges in MSPaint.

Evenin all! Cowboy

Flo, just a diet Dew please, lotsa ice.

Been a roller coaster of a day. Did my normal morning job search routine. Not sure why I do this on Monday,,,,nothing earth shaking happens after 3 pm Friday. Indifferent  Re arranged the garage a little so we still have ample room for everything til the new cabinets get hung....need 8 pieces of sheet rock 1stIndifferent Then Shop vacuumed the garage,,,,,sucked up sawdust, leaves, spiders etc.  Look nice!Big Smile

Swmbo called. the interview went well. She interviewed with the FD Prez and 2 members of the board of directors. 1st interviews this week, 2nd next. The job doesn't start til after Labor Day, when the current administrator retires. Money is the same, but benefits are awesome! Big Smile

Then an email from Eric Stelpflug at MR. My 0-4-0 with DCC and Keep Alive circuits made the September Issue in the DCC Corner! Big Smile  Sneek peak on how it runs at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21OqYpEihPA

Then an email from a friend Sad  One of my favorite people from the club passed away. Charlie was one of the 1st members I got to know, having joined the club shortly before I did in 1992. He was a retired mechanical engineer for Bechtel Corp, and was MR.Precision in his workshop. He taught me much about Quartering drivers, embossing rivets with a Sensi-press, gearboxes, torque arms, constant lighting, precision metalwork and most of all, using math to your advantage when designing or fabricating parts. In turn, my strong suite being scenery, I sceniced his club modules. His age and his demeanor reminded me of my Grandfather. About 18 month ago, he started selling off his collection. His modules were entrusted to another , younger member, his collection dispersed. His C&O brass Kanawah, and his Sakura 0-4-0 reside in my display cases now. A Mantua 2-8-2 kit is on my workbench, awaiting completion. Charlie it now has moved to the front of the line, and will stay there til its done. Sad

Then the guy whose shop I worked at and evaluated 2 weeks ago called and wants me to start , like, yesterday!Big Smile  Gonna go see him tomorrow (And pick up a 1,000.00  check!)Big SmileCool

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me at the moment...

I've been busy today.  Got about 2/3rds of the lawn mowed today (thick and still growing like crazy).  Ran out of battery about the same time I ran out of steam myself.  Hoped to get it finished tonight and didn't get back to it.  Took a box of dishes (Stoneware) over to the Salvation Army Store.  These would have been able to make me some spare cash if they had not all had chips out of them.  They are usable, but wouldn't bring me enough to pay the shipping to the place the way they were.  Then I went down to the UPS place and sent my Niece in Flowiduh a box of photos of her side of the family.  Cut up a bunch of the boxes the stored item were in and put them out to be recycled.

For supper tonight I sauteed the first zucchini from the garden with some onions and stopped when I was out a got a couple of ears of sweet corn.  First of the season.  That and a bit of aged cheddar cheese made a nice veggie dinner.  Finished off with a bowl of ice cream.

Karl, congrats on the article!

Prayers for all in need!

G I do sincerely hope that things get better for you and the OH.  Its never fun to have things miscalculated and screw up Mr Budget in the process.

Jeff: looks like you're doing well with your old Mac refurbishing, I remember using those computers when I was in elementary school, thanks for bringing back good memories.

Welp, another day and another dollar went into the paycheck from w**k today.  I did get to leave an hour early since we were deader than a loco with a fried decoder.  On the way home I changed a flat for someone stranded on the roadside and kinda made their day (since it was two college-age girls and it was about to storm enough to float the ark).  Got done with that and the girl that owned the little SUV was beside herself that someone would just turn around (I was heading home (southbound) and they were on the other side of the road (northbound)) and do something like that.  IT was the way I was raised, so no skin off my nose.

I think I'm going to sit here at the RC and watch thing progress, may jump over to another site I frequent and look at a few pictures, but I'm sure I'll be back.

Later there, taters!

Morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD TUESDAY MORNING!!!

Todya is Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013!!

I will light the prayer candles while I am home for those in need..

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

We often go "gung ho" on projects SO:

Meaning:

Zealous and eager

Origin:

The short version:

The origin goes back to the Chinese who worked on the Great Wall.  It was noted that their foreman would yell "Gung Ho" and then they'd all get busy in unison.  This phrase caught on with the Marines when General E. Carlson in WWII when he began using it. Soon it became a signal for enthusiastically working (together or single).

The longer in depth version:

This is an adaptation of the Chinese kung - work, and ho - together. The Anglicized term gung ho became widely known in English as a slogan that was adopted in WWII by the United States Marines under General Evans Carlson. The New York Times Magazinereported this in 1942:

"Borrowing an idea from China, Carlson frequently has what he calls 'kung-hou' meetings... Problems are threshed out and orders explained."

The following year Life magazine reported:

"He [Carlson] told them [the Marines] of the motto of the Chinese Co-operatives, Gung Ho. It means Work Together... My motto caught on and they began to call themselves the Gung Ho Battalion."

The first record of gung ho in print was a little earlier. In October 1941, the Oakland Tribune reported a story about some captured short war films. This doesn't mention Carlson or the US Marines by name, but the films relate to their activities:

"Other shorts are 'Information Please' and 'Gung Ho' with Regan McCrary."
