Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a pot of the dark roast Seneca Lake Blend coffee in my R&GV RR mug and a couple of those donuts over there (left over from yesterday.... Hey, don't want them to go to waste.).

Finally got a good nights sleep last night, and would probably still be sleeping but Manét jumped in bed about 9:15 this morning and started to dig the blanket I was under.  You know like he was digging a hole?  Then he jumped over me and cuddled next to me as if to say, "Daddy, it's time you got up and payed attention to us."  besides it was time to give Blackie his morning pills.

Today is the party foe my sister to celebrate her 13th., ah, 70th. birthday.  It will held at her favorite restaurant in Canandaigua, the Mexican one there.  I'll eat when I get home as I rarely find anything edible in Mexican Restaurants....  It's OK for my Sister to "hate" German food, Italian food, Chinese food and others, but since I don't care for Mexican (don't like tomatoes or salsa which is in everything), I need to "Grow Up!"  Oh well the "party" will come and go, my sister will still be about 13 years old (mentally), and I will go on with my life....  BTW, the owner of the restaurant used to be an artist like my sister.  She tells me he used to paint those beautiful paintings on the side of railroad cars years ago.  He now knows it was wrong and regrets his "Gang" days and has turned out to be a gentleman and a good businessman who runs a very successful restaurant here.

Oh,granddaughter #2s 6th. birthday went very well with my card being the last one opened.  She opened it looked at it and said, Thank you "PaPa" and set it down.  I said, Did you read it?  She says, "Uh huh."  Her Mom picks up the card and makes her come over and points out that I wrote something on the card she missed....  #2s eyes get big and she heads for the door to see what is in the back of her Mom's car...  #2 is told she has to put shoes on and the rest of us head out to the driveway.  Her mom makes her close her eyes and turn away while her dad, uncle, and I get the present out of the back of the car...  Here is her reaction when she turns around:

The next hour was spent driving around the lawn:

Both granddaughters know they are share both the Jeep and the Tractor I gave #2 a couple years ago, and both got to ride in and drive the new Jeep:

The cousins got to take a ride also (this one is the little girl with Retts Syndrome - notice #2 is keeping her safe as she rides.  She can't sit up by herself and likely won't live to adulthood....Sigh)

Best start getting ready for the "Ordeal" I guess...

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please. Thanks.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Hm. Well. What to do todayConfused. Replaced the back step yesterday and cleaned out the shed….next is the garage, but after Barry’s experience…Whistling.well I see many similarities in my own garage so I decided to start smallLaugh.Indifferent AND speaking of small, we went to “the other” Chinese buffet yesterday. Long story as to why. Readers Digest version is, friend of mines wife was over to give Brenda a “mani-Pedi”. (strange sounding name and almost can’t bring myself to say it. Kinda like “veggie”) Well, they got talking about the places to eat….the girl is Vietnamese. Came over with her parents about 20 years ago when she was like 7 or 8. Now she stands about 4' 11" inches and weighs...oh maybe 90 lbs? Maybe 100 she's not skinny but waaaaay far from even heavy, but man can she eat. I bet she even out eats Barry. 5 meals a day not counting snacks. LaughShe had to have a couple snack cakes here when her stomach started to rumble or I guess she'd cramp up. Seriously. Pretty thing tho and very, very niceYes. Anyway, they talk about Asian places to eat and of course Brenda brings up the Chinese Buffet and the “interactions” shall we say, she had with Nancy and now of course, SukiConfused. She who now calls herself Lisa instead of Bo, casually lays out her explanation for their actions while skillfully and exquisitely painting little fireworks on Brenda's fingernails... freehand. ApparentlyHuh?, all Asians think alike. Well, that ended any peaceful relaxing meal at THAT place for a whileGrumpy. So we went to another where she could scrutinize the help and I could hope one doesn’t smile more than she feels necessary SighConfused.

Well, I’ve got a pile of brush to get to the village burn pile and then maybe hit some more bushes and start building the pile again, and then it looks like all I have to do is….playBig Smile. I plan on getting in the trainroom today as I’ve once again visited WPF and….well you knowStick out tongue.

Not much else to report as it’s been pretty uneventful around  here. Kinda like rerun season on tv. Same stuff, different order.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

  Morning All,

Currently it is 60 with an expected high of 83 under partly cloudy skies.

Opening shift again today, and the same plans as yesterday, since they did not  happen yesterday.

Today is my sons birthday here, but it was yesterday in Australia where he currently is. Very confusing for me at times.

   Prayers to all in need.

Woke up this morning to find my Audi A8 has gone missing.  I went running into the house to phone the Police but my wife stopped me.  She told me that she has a surprise for me and I'm going to have to wait until after lunch to see it.  Angry  That car is my baby, I'm angry and excited at the same time.  No one has driven that car but me.   I've been wanting some new wheels put on it for sometime now so maybe that's what she did.

Good morning everyone! Not much going on here. Left work yesterday and stoped for a few cold ones and a burger. Between the hours I work and commuting to and back from work makes for a long day. It looks like its going to be another nice day today. We have not had any real humid days here in new england. Took a walk tp go get my ice coffee and now i'm sitting under the overpass waiting for the PWRR to go by so I can take some video and picks. Have a great day!!!!!!

Morning All,

On tap for the day-Trim back a tree, try to figure out why the dishwasher is not draining completely, and last but not least figure out why the pool pump pressure is running high.

Tonight MOH, Daughter, Grand kids, and me are going to Cracker Barrel for supper. (SIL is working).

Well best be getting at it before the temp and humidity are unbearable.

Hope everybody has a good day and prayers for those in need.

Galaxy, thanks for the Sandman info.  DER SANDMANN sounds more like the guy in the Metallica song than the Andrews Sisters ditty! Surprise

During my Junior and Senior years in high school, the marching band actually used to play "Enter Sandman". Liked playing it, mainly because I had a good part to it.

Morning.

Likely will  be going to grandma's later today to help with hay season. Hope to get last of decals on the Mustang today and get the parts to the Typhoon washed later on.

Morning guys,

Already warm here. Its 9am and the temp is 75 but feeling like 90. Still working on the operations schedule. Also thinking about adding another industry to the layout. I have one of those walthers background kits that I never got around to building and might build it and see if I can incorporate it somehow? dont know if it will fit without some construction though.

Good morning. It's 74° with 95% humidity. The high will be 92°.

Nothing really on the schedule today. I may tear up some track later. I think in this new track plan the park is going to have to go. Several other things are going to have to be re-situated as well. The real trick is going to be avoiding creating an 'S' curve.

Well, gotta go, Mr. Sandman is callin........................check out the Sandman Galaxy,,,where did he come from??'

KARL: Just for you,

Mister Sandman, dream me a dream....Make him the cutest that I've ever seen...

OPPS! SORRY THAT song doesn't belong here!

The only references To YOUR 'sandman' I can find is from Wikipedia:

The Sandman is a mythical character in Northern European folklore who brings good dreams by sprinkling 'magical sand' onto the eyes of children while they sleep at night. Traditionally, he is a character in many children's stories. He is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of the child at night to bring on good dreams and sleep. The grit or "Sleep" in one's eyes upon waking is supposed to be the result of the Sandman's work the night before.

The earliest form of published version is found in Hans Christian Andersen:

His 1841 folk tale  Ole Lukøje recorded the Sandman, named Ole Lukøje, by relating dreams he gave to a young boy in a week through his magical technique of sprinkling dust in the eyes of the children. Andersen wrote:

There is nobody in the world who knows so many stories as Ole-Luk-Oie, or who can relate them so nicely. In the evening, while the children are seated at the table or in their little chairs, he comes up the stairs very softly, for he walks in his socks, then he opens the doors without the slightest noise, and throws a small quantity of very fine dust in their eyes, just enough to prevent them from keeping them open, and so they do not see him. Then he creeps behind them, and blows softly upon their necks, till their heads begin to droop. But Ole-Luk-Oie does not wish to hurt them, for he is very fond of children, and only wants them to be quiet that he may relate to them pretty stories, and they never are quiet until they are in bed and asleep. As soon as they are asleep, Ole-Luk-Oie seats himself upon the bed. He is nicely dressed; his coat is made of silken fabric; it is impossible to say of what color, for it changes from green to red, and from red to blue as he turns from side to side. Under each arm he carries an umbrella; one of them, with pictures on the inside, he spreads over the good children, and then they dream the most beautiful stories the whole night. But the other umbrella has no pictures, and this he holds over the naughty children so that they sleep heavily, and wake in the morning without having dreams at all

Then there is a more sinister look a the little imp:

E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776–1822) wrote an inverse depiction of the lovable character in a story called Der Sandmann, which showed how sinister such a character could be made. According to the protagonist's nurse, he threw sand in the eyes of children who wouldn't sleep, with the result of those eyes falling out and being collected by the Sandman, who then takes the eyes to his iron nest on the moon, and uses them to feed his children. The protagonist of the story grows to associate this nightmarish creature with the genuinely sinister figure of his father's associate Coppelius. In Romanian folklore there is a similar character called Mos Ene (Ene the Elder).

The Sandman is a popular character in folklore referenced in popular culture over several centuries, in writings, songs and video industries: notably from 1920 in Japan, and in the 1930s by references in Disney productions, to the 1950's celebration\s, and up to 2011's Peter Luisi film DER SANDMANN .

Good night and sweet dreams form the sandman....

Morning Coffee in the diner...

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Sunday June 23, 2013!!

I will light the prayer candles after the AM service for those in need...

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

 NIP IT IN THE BUD:

MEANING:

Put a stop to something while it is still in its early development

ORIGIN:

THE Simple answer:

Horticultualists learned years ago that in order to produce good fruit, a plant had to have buds snipped off.  This improved garden produce, but was naturally disastrous to individual buds.  It became 'proverbial' that when a bud was nipped off, it would definitely no longer produce any fruit.  Today the word is used to refer to a sudden halt in any plans or project in which no further progress will result

The published reference version:

This phrase  derives from the de-budding of plants. The earlier form of the phrase was 'nip in the bloom' and is cited in Henry Chettle's romance Piers Plainnes Seaven Yeres Prentiship, 1595:

"Extinguish these fond loues with minds labour, and nip thy affections in the bloome, that they may neuer bee of power to budde."

A version of the current 'bud' version of the phrase first appears in 1607, in Beaumont and Fletcher's comedy of manners Woman Hater (a title that they would probably have difficulty convincing a publishing house to use today):

"Yet I can frowne and nip a passion Euen in the bud."

Good evening y'all! Cowboy

Oh my, it was a warm one today. We to w*rk this morning with SWMBO. She gets an extra 100 bucks a week to clean her companies office. I vacuumed, she cleaned the bathrooms and collected the trash, we were out of there in an hour! Big Smile

So Flo, based on that, I believe I deserve a cold Beer !!!! Then we went yard saling, and I go 2 really pretty train jigsaw puzzles. I'll let Danny put them together, since he did the last 2 and hung them (framed) in his bedroom!, cost be a grand total of 4 bucks for the puzzles!Big Smile

Then we stopped at the bank so I could deposit a payment for an engine I remotored and put a sound decoder in for a buddy of mine. Wiseguy that he is, he paid me off in 2 dollar bills! Mischief The bank teller didn't look to happy trying to count a stack of 2 dollar bill so fresh that they were in numerical order!! Maybe Ill just ask for a check next time!!Smile, Wink & Grin

Then we get home and the mailman brings me a check today! Payment from Kalmbach for another article! Don't get too excited, if they run true to form, it may be December of January before they use it!

Then I start on some more engines for MR." 2 dollar" Bill. I decoder is wrong, the other 2 are repaints of QSI equipped SD26's with "confused" decoders. Finally, an hour later I get them straightened out, using my NCE system, Decoder Pro and the "magic wand" that comes from QSI Confused Tomorrow, the get stripped and prepped for paint!

But on the bright side, I did make some good progress this afternoon on my Alco C415 project! Big Smile  I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Curt. Thanks for the compliment!

Garry,, that pic of your house is scary! I too am sending up a prayer for Calgary.

MR B. Don't move south to "not free any more" state. They now tax the rain that falls on your property now!! Rumor is, the "Sun" tax is next!! Sigh  I'm considering a move to Carolina myself!

Well, gotta go, Mr. Sandman is callin........................check out the Sandman Galaxy,,,where did he come from??'

nite all!

Layout front: There was nothing done on the layout today, as predicted. I did look at it a few times to start working out a few plans I've been working on. There's nothing set in stone yet. There's still a lot of track to pull up.

On the computer front: Many years ago I installed a clear plastic fan in the top cover of my Apple IIe computer so heat could be evacuated from the case. Then as now it was intended to be powered by an external power source. I used to use an old model train power pack. Nothing special, just a cheap Bachmann power pack. This worked fine as long as the speed and/or direction didn't get changed. Today I changed that by connecting a 12v 1500mA wall wart. Plenty of power and no chance of the speed or polarity changing. The current is AC but the fan doesn't care. It will run quite happily on AC or DC.

Only watched one movie and a couple of documentaries today.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening guys,

Warm one out there right now ( 82 but feeling like 97 ) was thinking we might get some storms but there chances are low right now, maybe tomorrow. As I am not a fan of humidity I took the opportunity today to revise my operations a bit. I pulled a couple books from the railroad library ( "Realistic model railroad operation" by Tony Koester and "How to operate your mode railroad" by Bruce Chubb ) also thumbing through a magazine put out by MR last year called "How to operate your model railroad". I like turning to these books for tips and ideas.

Kurt- We use to get squirrels on our roof too when we had a tree close to the house. They actually built a nest in the chimney from the furnace. Once we cut it down we didn't have them anymore.

Well Im going to go grab a bowl of ice cream and slip around the forums here.

Evening All,

Had a great Afternoon. I met Phil at Jon's hobby shop and went to lunch togetherSmile. The food wasn't great but the company was. He gave me a old Mantua flat car that I worked on this afternoon and posted a couple of pictures on WPF.

Tomorrow I have to trim a tree so the darn (thinking another word) squirrels can't get on the roof. They have been chewing on the solar plumbing on the roof. That cost $135 to repair.

Garry- Very nice pic on WPF.

Jeff- Congrats to your Father on his wedding.

Karl- When I first looked t those loco's in WPF I thought they were real. Great job.

Galaxy- My first stop was the Blue Ridge Scenic RR. After that we went to Strasburg to the museum and RR. When I walked into the museum on the raised walkway my jaw dropped and I actually got goose bumps!. After Strasburg we went to Steam town and walked the museum and did the short excursion there. After this we drove to Altoona and did the Railroader Museum then drove up to Horseshoe Curve where I caught (video) the NKP Berkshire on a excursion. After this we visited friends and family. We put 3300 miles on the truck during our travels. This was the best vacationBig Smile I have had as a adult. My wife was a real trooper during all this. I went to the train shop by the museum in Strasburg and another one in Lancaster.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Will start work on the Spitfire soon. Also made a stop at the LHS and picked up a Hawker Typhoon. Figured it would look really sharp next to the Spitfire when complete.

Afternoon........ ZzzZzzZzz

Yawn!!!  Stretch.....  Shakes head...  Ah, that felt good!  After we put away all the unsold items from the Yard/Lawn/deck/garage sale and my son's headed out, I sat down here at the computer to see what was going on.  That was an hour ago, and I just woke up!

Did pretty good with the sale.  Cleared a bit over $100 total.  Sold both my old air conditioners and the old gas snow blower.  Also quite a few of the odds and ends from my parents estate.  My son Matt noticed that as usual most of the really nice stuff got passed by and all the old silly little doo dads sold.  There are some plates and cup collections that I have almost intact and in excellent shape, over 100 years old.  I will contact a place that deals in these items and see what I might get from them.  Other stuff I will take to a local 2nd hand shop and see what I can get there.

In a half hour I will be heading over to my son's house for Granddaughter #1s 6th. birthday party.  I assembled the ride in toy Jeep I got her after carefully measuring the width and length of it to make sure i9t would fit in the back of the PiP to get it over to her house...  I didn't, however, measure the height...  Guess what?  So my son had to bring over his wife's big Chrysler SUV.  We put the seats down and did a bit of moving items around and it is in the back of that waiting to be presented to my sweet little girl!  My son brought over a badly beat up artificial Christmas tree to sell...  It didn't, so the tree is in the back of the PiP so I can take it back to him.

Had a huge gathering of little tiny ants on one of my walks out back this morning.  Used some Spectracide wasp spray on them.  Their gone.

Best get myself moving...  Later!

I saw this stuff at Canadian tire the other day, didn't buy it though as I didn't know how good it would be. There are hundred to choose from. I have always had success using the Raid stuff that is suppose to keep working for two weeks but the ants seem immune to it this year.

I have yet to see an ant that's immune to boiling hot water.

Does anybody know how to get rid of little brown ants? I have them at the side of the house, I keep spraying but they come back?? I haven't had any in the house but don't want to have to keep spraying everyday. Anybody have any tips?

Go to Canadian Tire or Lowes or Home Depot and buy a big jug of HOME DENFENCE  Use it for the rest of the summer on a regular basis and the little ants will be gone gone gone.

I use it and it WORKS, I has a residual effect as well so as long as it doesn't get washed away you are good to go.

Dennis

Thanks Dennis,

I saw this stuff at Canadian tire the other day, didn't buy it though as I didn't know how good it would be. There are hundred to choose from. I have always had success using the Raid stuff that is suppose to keep working for two weeks but the ants seem immune to it this year.

Thanks for your concerns about Spunky. I know that she appreciates it. And hey, she had a good life. Even when we got her at age 12-14, she was jumping off of the walls. Age just caught up to her.

Hello eveyone.

Got some cleaning up done around the house this morning. Also finally got the P-38 mounted in my room, it really look sharp, and may get a Zero or an Oscar to be shot up by the 38. Looking to get the canopy put on the Spitfire, and will, and I mean WILL, get some work done on the Mustang. Will also look for a good white spray paint for the Spit's underbelly.

Does anybody know how to get rid of little brown ants? I have them at the side of the house, I keep spraying but they come back?? I haven't had any in the house but don't want to have to keep spraying everyday. Anybody have any tips?

Italian roast coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***Jeffrey, that's a nifty little shop to have.

***Garry, those tracks look like Mr. Toads Wild Ride.

***Ray, sometimes I get tuckered out just from reading your posts.

***Galaxy, teeth can be such a nuisance at times, yet they sure do serve a purpose. Hope you can always keep enough to get by.

Tomorrow I can sand all the sheetrock patching work down and if I still have any of the original wall paint, get that project finished.

Have a great day, all.

  Morning All,

Currently it is 53 with an expected high of 87 under sunny skies.

Opening shift today. Daughters and sil are supposed to come over this afternoon with a vehicle or two to park on the side of the house, since I have the room and they do not. Then pizza for dinner and I will have one of them cut my hair. So it looks like no train w**k today.

V8Vega's question got me thinking also. As I work with the public I enjoy my "alone time", but not a lot of people do. Senior centers, and volunteer work are always good ways to meet others.

   Prayers to all in need.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich please. Thanks.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 11am, then isolated showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91.  Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Jake- Sorry to hear of Spunkys’ passing.

Dennis- No Can’t say as I have. I’ve lived here all my life. I guess maybe get a part –time (gulp) job. Then you’d meet some co-workers and maybe they’ll introduce you around. Just a thought.

Jeremy- Stuff called ant bait. It comes in a small tube and is like gelled….glue I guess. You can get it about anywhere, Walmart, farm stores, etc. Anyway, you squeeze out a glob near the ants, they eat it, take it back to the nest, feed it to the others and most important the Queen. After a day or two usually the hill is dead and no more antsDead. Others say pouring boiling water into the mound if you can find it, for a couple days works too. Never tried it myself.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Happy Saturday to you all.  It's a lovely day here in New England, low 80s, but the humidity is on the rise and I'll be thinking about turning on an AC or two.  We've got a sprawling house with mostly through-the-wall AC units.  The one in the train room gets the most use, as I couldn't care less how hot the bedrooms get all day, and most nights the fan is sufficient.

A few weeks back, I did an Envirotex pour around my car float.  It came out very well visually, but it never hardened and has remained sticky.  That tells me I didn't get it properly mixed.  I added some acrylic paint to tint it, and that too did not come out completely mixed in.  So, last night I mixed up a smaller batch and added another layer.  I had a small job to do anyway, beneath the carfloat apron for when the float itself is "out of port," so I did it all at once.  It should be hard and smooth as glass by this time tomorrow.

SWMBO is also "out of port," in Florida visiting her parents.  So, I decided to go down to the local barbeque bar to eat dinner, have a couple of drafts and watch the hockey game.  I had the wrong day.  The game isn't until tonight, but I had a couple of Dogfish Ales and a big plate of tasty meat and vegetables anyway.  It got to thinking about V8Vega's question yesterday.  Dennis, think about some of the local bars and pubs.  When we were growing up, bars were kind of nasty, smoke-filled places, but in recent years most states, maybe all, have made them smoke-free.  I've taken a liking to them now, and I enjoy striking up conversations sitting at the bar.  Of course, the whole microbrew-on-tap culture has made this all the more pleasant.
