What Mk of the Spitfire are you modeling? My favorite is the MkV clipped wing and MkIX (favorite WWII era pilot was Johnnie Johnson).  I've built a few Airfix , Tamiya and Academy 1/48 Spitfire kits in the past. Can't wait to see your progress.

Happy Modeling!

Do you remember the IBM compatible that Commodore made? I believe they called it 'Colt'.

My first computer was a Commodore 64, beige color. I never could do a whole lot with it because my computer skills were...are still...terrible. I remember this game I had that had a triangle in the middle of the screen and you shot lazes at rocks/asteroids. My parents upgraded me to a Commodore 128. Those were the days Shy.

Happy modeling!

Morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD MODAY MORNING!!!

Today is Monday, June 24th, 2013.

I will light the prayer candles for those in need..

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

To Crack up:

Dictionary:

transitive verb:
1: Praise, tout  <wasn't all that it was cracked up to be>
2: to damage or destroy (a vehicle) by crashing <crack up a car>
3: to cause to laugh out loud <that joke really cracks him up>
intransitive verb:
1: to damage or destroy a vehicle (as by losing control) <cracked up on a curve>
2 : to laugh out loud

The simpler tales:

The old general stores often had a cracker barrel on which citizens of the town would gather to play games, and tell their stories.  Often listeners did not 'crack a smile'. At other times, a lot of laughter was required.  If a teller of a tall tale evoked a lot of laughter it was like hitting a 'bulls eye', and so faces with 'cracked smiles' meant it was a "first class" tale.  Today the term now signifies anything that isn't 'first class' and is ..."not what it is 'cracked up' to be."

Perhaps it happened this way {Old wives tale?} {?}:     'Cracked Up' also refers to a Civil War time makeup.{?} At this time the makeup consisted mostly of beeswax, and ladies had to partially melt the makeup beside the fire before applying it. After application it would harden on their face. If the lady laughed or smiled it would crack the makeup, and thereby look like her face was 'Cracking Up'. {?}

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

I was fortunate. Sorta. My first computer was a family-shared IBM PC. WHY? because my father worked for IBM...so naturally we wouldn't have a Commodore 64 {affectionately called the "good if you're on a boat" by the IBMers} or an Apple  {affectionately called the "who wants a fruit for a computer" by the IBMers} or even a Radio Shack TRS 80 {affectionately called the "trash 80" by the IBMers}. It came at the tune of $5k for a dual drive {5.5 floppies of course} Model.

When they went to the "IBM training class" when they picked up the PC, they made the group play "LA cucuracha". MY mother looked astonished at my father {the tale goes} and said "$5000.00 for it to play "La Cucuracha? REALLY??"

Of course it had a lto to offer in those days. especially the games {I was still 17 barely 18 when they go it.} My favorite games were  ADVENTURE, WORM {where you add segments to a "worm' {of 0"s} and not run into your tail}. And one other I can't remember.{Old age disease}.

IBM then dumped, for free, the computers to all the local schools surrounding its facilities/plants. that was to get the students into the IBM format!

A few years later as I went to college I bought MY individual one first one..naturally an "IBM clone". it cost me around $2200. I used the word processor the most. {"ZEN" word processor- never heard of it before or since..but it worked for me to get through my reports, term papers  and journals. Clumsy really by today's MS OFFICE standards}

naturally we see whose format won out.The clones live on.

My father, long retired from IBM, recently bought a new lap top, naturally an IBM model. I have stuck with DELLs since My boss had provided them to me in the past, so when I no longer worked there, and had to purchase one, I went with DELL, naturally. and overall I have been happy with them.

Ah, them were the days....

thank you for this stroll down amnesia lane.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a bowl of Commander Crunch please. Thanks.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 7am. Partly sunny, with a high near 89.  Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Ray- My the girls are getting big!

Karl-  It sounds worse than it is when it comes to the waitresses. It matters not that they are Chinese, Mexican, German, Italian or good ole United Statsian. It can be the check-out girl at the Walmart. Yes she accused me of flirting with the checkout girl at walmart one time because I said in response to “thank you, have a nice day”, and I quote…(ahem)….”oh thank you and you have a nice day too.”

Let me explain a bit to the newer folks. That stuff doesn’t happen all the time and way less than it used to. WAY less. And it sounds worse than it is. Really. My wife is a somewhat jealous person and will readily tell you that. (I tell her most times, that is not a reason, that’s an excuse.) Sometimes in her talking with others, she states it almost like it's a badge of honorTongue Tied. She picks on the Chinese girls more than the rest because it’s one of the places I go where I see pretty much the same 4 waitresses all the time. And as frequently as I’m in there, they get to know you better and of course communicate with you more and are friendlier to you as you are familiar to them and they get more comfortable with you just like anyone would. HmmFunny she has no issue with the waitress at the Huddlehouse here in town or the Mcdonald’s drive thru person thoughHuh?. Anyway, the main issue is they are not fluent in English and coupled with their normal manner of speech and it’s translation issues between the two languages, some things end up sounding different than they mean them. I understand that and just laugh at the way things come out sometimes ( not to their faces, I don’t think they would understand why I’m laughing), just like most people do to anyone who says something that came out wrong or sounded different than intended…myself included. Something we’ve all done and laughed about. Brenda however, pretty much takes what you say as you say it regardless. Always has. “No. That’s NOT what she said” Unless it’s her of courseConfused. It’s a quirk I deal with. I’m sure she deals with a few quirks of mineWhistling.  Most all the time my relaying of the event, is told somewhat tongue in cheek (Galaxy…you’re up on that one!), not as a relaying of some big problem. Some may find it humorous, some may not .

A guy with a dry somewhat sarcastic sense of humor coupled with a girl with not much of a sense of humor…..opposites do attract.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning, or at least it's a good morning to be where someone else is paying for the air conditioning.  75 degrees and humid as all get out on the way to work at a quarter to seven this morning.  It's going to be in the 90s.  This heat just drains all my energy.  Over the weekend, I put on the AC in the train room and tried to stay there.

Friday evening I just got sick of the "sticky water" from my last Envirotex pour.  I reasoned that I didn't mix the resin and hardener well enough, and it was never going to set up, so I mixed another batch and poured a second layer.  Like magic, 24 hours later I had the hard, glassy surface I was looking for.  Once it was done, I realized that I'd spent more time fretting about than just doing a second pour and fixing the problem.  You just can't leave sticky Envirotex around - it will pick up dust and pollen, and you'll never get it clean again.

Not happy with my Bruins on Saturday, but tonight's a chance for redemption to force a seventh game.  Either way, the Stanley Cup will be awarded this week.  Next weekend, the Tour de France begins.  Images of Lance Armstrong have been notably absent from the promotional ads on TV.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Good morning. It's 75° with 22% humidity. The high will be 92°.

Only thing on the schedule today is a doctor appointment. We had more storms come through during the night. For having only a 20% chance of rain yesterday it was pretty active. Power went out yesterday and a couple of times during the night. Hopefully I'll be able to get some layout work in later. I have to get rid of some boxes that are under the layout before I can do much more up top.

Good morning all...hope it's alright if I saddle up to the counter. Don't want to intrude. I've poked my head in "The Diner" before but haven't taken a seat or enjoyed a cuppa Joe (milk and Splenda please).

You folks have some interesting and entertaining discussions, so I figured I may as well formally "enter the diner" and listen in as the "new guy". Coffees, teas, and other soft drinks are on me...

Happy Modeling and Good Day!

Good morning ..... Coffee and a carmel pecan roll, pleas............  I have 5 things to say about that: "mmmmm; mmmm;......... mmmm; mmmmm; mmmmmmmmmmm .! "

I was in Cincinnati briefly. Drove there Saturday afternooon.; drove back yesterday after noon. It's over 300 miles one way. .... Picked up Shelley  who had been vising over there with grandkids ...... I drove the truck to bring back stuff Shelley acquired, and (the improtant part) ..... picked up material for more layout construction. Our son there owns and operates a cabinet business, and gets good prices on stuff I need for layout construction.

My mother and about 200 other elderly people had a close call a few days ago at their senior living apartment building in Alabama. Lightning hit the building during a rain storm. .... Thankfully, no fire.and nobody was hurt .... However, the power surge wiped out any unportected electronics. ..... TV's and so on were ruined. A light bulb blew up in my Mom's apartment. Her phone quit working, too. .... I was wondering why she was not answerring her phone when I called her. My sister who lives near my mother told me yesterday what happended.

Mr. B. ..... Just for fun would you like an image to use as wallpaper on your computer screen? I was thinking you are a hockey fan and might like a team photo of the Chicago Blackhawks. Whistling

Uh, oh Todd ........ Are you hitting on ladies again.  Tsk, tsk. Watch out for those WalMart women!

Galaxy and Mr. B...... Perhaps, I should just scroll past your posts about dreams.

Karl .... Have you become the stripper of Elliots Diner?......

It was a remarkable weekend in the DIner!

Okay. I have had my carmel pecan roll, and now I will get busy unloading the truck.

Cheers, everybody!

Edit: ...  I'm at the top ....... Have some carmel pecan rolls ..... They are  mmmmm, mmmm, mmmmm !

2nd edit .... Welcome EMD Don!

"It's Audi Duty time.. it's Audi Duty time...."

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes with real NYS Maple Syrup, a side order of bacon, and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Organic Fair Traded Coffee this morning.  Thank You Ma'am!  What? Yes, use my R&GV RR mug if you would.

Don, welcome aboard!  Always good to see a new face here in the diner.  I'm sure Galaxy will chime in with a quick review of all the rules.  Break any of them and Cousin Vinnie will be paying you a visit with his steel pipe section.  He is the twins cousin and enforces (without being subtle) the letter of the law around here....  Oh, where you are sitting (the counter) is called the "Rivet Counter" and is usually where those folks who are really into proto modeling hang out.  It is also used when someone has some info about a specific prototype to share.

Currently 82°F here in the Finger Lakes with a forecast of thunderboomers most all day.  I will be going out to Boy Scout Camp this afternoon to finish the installation of the second microphone outlet the dining hall and possibly trim around the tent platforms in the sites.

My sister's 13th. 70th. birthday party went well yesterday.  I sat and yakked with a former student of my sister's who now teaches here in in Geneva.  I was right that the food served was not stuff I really wanted to eat, but the Margaritas were great!  I had some chips and a couple rather innocuous looking something or others that the Margaritas could wash down just to be sociable.  (I was careful to not imbibe much actually as I had to drive home.  I had a couple small glasses of the Margarita over a 3 hour period...)  Sister showed off how at 70 she can still bend at the waist and touch her head to the floor...  She is into the Yoga stuff and thinks I should do it so I would have no health problems.....

She liked this card:

Karl, all of them.... Smile, Wink & Grin

Ctch you all later!

Thanks for the hearty "welcome" fellas. You sure make it easy for a guy to sit right down and feel like a part of the group Smile

Is it too early for a cold one...? It's been a day already...

Had to take my car into the garage this morning. It's a 2006 Mercury Milan (think Ford Fusion with more bells and whistles...pun intended Laugh). She's been a great car, never had any issues. But...the AC went on her this weekend. I did what I could but no luck. Took her to the garage that I use and trust (these are good old boys who live and breath cars and I have never felt " taken" by them). Anyways, they hooked it up to their fancy pants diagnostic machines and traced the problem to a sensor. Problem is, to get to the sensor they have to rip the entire dash board out...everything (gauges, airbags...you name it). They said they could do it but didn't advise it as it would be very time consuming (read: expensive), and once you start ripping into the dash boards of modern day computerized cars the affect on other components could be not so good. *SIGH* Sigh. Wouldn't you know it, the misses and I are headed North to Canada tomorrow to visit friends and family and do some railfanning Sad. Well, considering it's age and the risks associated with the possible remedy, I told the boys at the garage to not bother. They didn't charge me for anything.

Now, I remember not having AC in any of my cars, right up into the mid 1990's. So I have lived without it. But it will take some getting used to. I am thinking about heading to Autozone, NAPA or Pepboys to see if they have any external cooling systems. I see them online and they range between $25 and $100...which is far less then risking the fix to the cars internal AC system. How they work...? I have no idea...?

So that's my day so far. I really hope that everyone else here at the Diner is having a better day!

Happy Modeling!

Don.

I'll say one thing for the Blackhawks, their guy who sings the Star Spangled Banner does a great job and he's got the voice for it.  I'm sure you'll all join me in being happy to hear him one more time on Wednesday night before Game 7.

Good evening from a hot and humid Pittsburgh. There is a possibility of pop up showers this evening, and I hope we get them. Everything is starting to get pretty dry around here. We have had a nice time this weekend. Busy with some of our favorite activities. Saturday we railfanned for close to 3 hours and caught 8 trains. One westbound was an empty crude oil unit train with new tank cars, most, if not all, with a build date of May, 2013. The wife counted 101 cars. With a capacity of 31,760 gallons each, that works outto 3,207,760 gallons total, or 76,375 barrels altogether. With my math skills, if this is wrong, I don't want to know about it. Let me bask in my ignorance.

One train caught a stop signal in front of us. While sitting there, a couple pulled up in their car and got out with a little boy about 3 or 4 years old. The little guy was really excited to see this train up close. Then the crew played a short litle tune with the horn. Did a really good job with it too. This tyke was absolutely beside himself. I'm pretty sure he's going to be talking about his experience for a long time. The wife and I usually always get a little toot or a wave from passing crews. In return, we wish them a safe journey.

Sunday was a performance of "Phantom" at the Civic Light Opera. This wasn't the "Phantom of the Opera", but a different musical based on the same story. While the cast had excellent voices, there wasn't any great or outstanding songs in my opinion. We enjoyed it never the less. Afterwards, we went to a nice local restaurant we like for a Bourban Glazed Pot Roast with Smashed Garlic Potatoes. Had a nice Chardonnay to go with it.

Today we had breakfast at Bob Evans, then did some grocery shopping. Came home and I did 5 loads of laundry. Between loads, I got the hedges ttrimmed, and both the front and back yards mowed. Proved to be too much time spent in the hot sun, as I haven't felt up to par this afternoon.

Ray - The girls are growing up fast, aren't they? Staying cute too. By the way, a couple of pages back you mentioned about calling someone about dishes and such you had. It reminded me that about 20 years ago the wife called a guy to see about selling some old dishes, bowls, etc. that were her Mother's and Grandmother's. I though it would be a big waste of time. Wow, was I surprised by the size of the check he gave her. Turned out a lot was from well known sets and there was a big market for replacement pieces. It took months for her to stop gloating about that one.

Well, I need to water the flower beds now, so everybody have a great week.

Lehigh Valley 2089

Got the camo paint on the Spit, hope to have a photo of it possibly up tomorrow at some time.

Night everyone.

Don.

It's an MkII Spit. Like the looks of it. It's camo scheme is freelanced and is rather hard edged, but I like it.

Hello everyone.

Hope to have progress made on the Spit sometime this evening. Mowed lawn at work today and MAN it was brutal. Next few days don't look promising.

Chips with salsa, please.

***Jeffrey, nice layout scene.Thumbs Up

***Jake, sorry I wasn't paying attention so have to ask, is the hay for cows, horses, or do you bale and sell it?

***Tom, perhaps a future model railroader from that experience?

My goal tonight is to paint the patched walls in the Train Room. Will have the windows open to cool the house anyway, so may as well take advantage of that. Need to bushhog the front pasture soon. I see weeds trying to stage a comeback.

Have a good evening all.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Evening All,

Had chicken for supper tonight.

Yesterday we got the tree trimmed without destroying anything elseYes and got the pressure down in the pool system. Never made it to the dishwasher since our daughter and the grandkids came over. Today ran several errands, cleaned house and shot a short video of the layout.

Tomorrow my son and I are going to see World War Z at the movies. The book was great and I hope the movie is a good representation of it.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases

Has anyone heard from Ulrich? Hope he is just busy!

Train / Road Runner Front. Half way thinking of tearing down the layout so I can get the Road Runner inside! While I still love trains and will keep most of the train stuff if not all of it. I still have feels about the Road Runner, I have only owed the car for 40 years!

Plus, lets faces it, while my layout is big and runs well it looks like a 10 year old was given $10,000.00 and he went nuts. Only a guess on the 10K, but I would not be shocked if I have spent that.

Have thought about doing both, it is hard to serve two masters! Confused Getting her running will be the easy part! (well I hope) But one thing I do know, is Body Work and electric HO stuff do not like each other! If I am doing bodywork, there will be a ton of dust! Even with covering the layout remains (K-10 Mining) I would spend more time cleaning than running trains.

Not ready to break out the saw's-all just yet, but I am thinking about it. Whistling Once the body work is done and she is painted I can build a better layout around her!

Ken, thinking about his first love again!

Good Evening All,

Between thunder storms just now. No worries as we're wireless and on battery power just now. Rupert dog on the other hand is trying to wedge himself in the smallest space possible. Ratty is sound asleep on the CFO's lap.

No progress on the layout save for some ballasting. I finally got Scenic Express iNvisble scale ballast in dark grey and cinder (one each) and have rediscovered how tedious it all is. And of course I devoted a full third of the layout to a yard and loop track so massive ballast needed for that.

The other tedious bit is the second river I poured. After 6 months, it is still soft. I used bar top two piece epoxy same as last time but now need to decide do I pull it all out of try to work more hardner into it? Any ideas?

As far as life is concerned, I'm between trips to Mosport and  Mid Ohio so little time off from the job.

Hope you are all doing well, catch Y'all later, J.R.
