I was mentioning I am working on the headlights of my Burlington E7's. They are Proto 2000 models which came with mars lights. When I changed to DCC , I had trouble with the headlights not working correctly. After some false startes, I decided to remove the mars light because the Burlington did not use them. (Edit: I have been informed the Q's upper headlight housing did have a Mars light. The upper clear light would make a sideways figure eight pattern if the engineer turned it on, but that was not used most of the time. )
Here is an old photo of the Twin Cities Zephyr with E7's. The lower headlight was the running light, and had two beams. The upper headlight had a red beam and a clear beam. The red beam would only be lighted if there was an emergency brake application. The clear upper light was sometimes used as a running light while the lower light was also on.
Here is my model E7 pair with modified lighting. It has a clear LED in the lower headlight. The upper headlights has a red LED and a clear LED. A 4-function NCE decoder is installed. The lower light works with the headlight function key. The upper red light and the upper clear light come on using a function key for each one. The CV's are programmed so the upper lights will flash. The lower LED is lighted. The upper headlight is not lighted, but you can see the red LED. in the photo. My model railroad friend, Gus , worked on my E7's.

Janie, just my usual decaf please...
I spent much of the day just vegging out. Actually fell asleep sitting at the computer doing some research on fencing... Did drive down to the credit union and get a few photos of some dead presidents to carry around in my wallet as I only had 3 pictures of George left. I then headed over to the Value Store to get a couple hooks I can put in at camp to hang the mics from.
I was just settling down to see what was going on here and a couple other places tonight after supper when the phone rang. It was the Tree Surgeon who gave me an acceptable price on taking out the old overgrown shrubs and said he will be here late tomorrow afternoon if all goes well. I called the folks next door and let the lady know. She seemed genuinely excited to finally see the project get started. Don't think she likes the old overgrown Hemlock hedge any more than I do. Next step will to agree on what kind of fence we want to in its place. Been sitting here pricing different options for the last couple hours.
I bought the cats a couple of toy mice when I was there with Blackie this morning. Gave Blackie his late this morning. he just let it sit next to him on his chair... He did knock it around a bit as it is now half way across the room from where I gave it to him. Manét was sleeping most of the day, so he just got his a few minutes ago. He has gone completely nuts with it. He picks it up, throws it in the air, and then chases it around batting it with his paws. Takes it in his mouth, rolls over, then throws it again. Fun watching him!
No Model Railroading today.... Maybe tomorrow while I wait for the guy to remove the hedge...
Have a great night! Prayers for all in need.

SPILL THE BEANS:
{Simple belief}:
In ancient Greece, voting for some of their organizations was done via beans. White beans, for instance, were dropped into a container who favored the candidate and brown or black beans if one did not. Apparently the jar was solid and opaque, so when one went to vote one kept one's hands closed so no one knew what bean you droped. Only the 'officials' knew the actual total vote results . However....on a some occasions a voter would knock over the jar and revealed all the beans. This is where the phrase came from to refer to someone who reveals the truth or hidden secrets
Meaning:
To divulge a secret, especially to do so inadvertently or maliciously
Origin {more accurately}:
The derivation of this expression is sometimes said to be the voting system used in ancient Greece. The story goes that white beans indicated positive votes and black beans negative. Votes had to be unanimous, so if the collector 'spilled the beans' before the vote was complete and a black bean was seen, the vote was halted. That's plausible, but doesn't account for the fact that the phrase is first found in the early 20th century. It's probably best if we concentrate our search there and ignore the ancient Greece references.
'Spill' has been used as a verb with the meaning of 'divulge' or 'let out' since at least the 16th century. Edward Hellowes' Guevara's Familiar epistles, 1574, contains an example of that usage:
"Although it be a shame to spill it, I will not leaue to say that which... his friends haue said vnto me." {note: in 1574 spelling and words were different}
"Although it be a shame to spill it, I will not leaue to say that which... his friends haue said vnto me."
{note: in 1574 spelling and words were different}
That 'let out' meaning was probably influenced by an earlier meaning of 'spill', i.e. 'kill' and the subsequent usage of 'spill blood', which was in common use by the 14th century.
The earliest uses of 'spill the beans' come from the USA. The meaning of the phrase was then something like 'spoil the beans' or 'upset the applecart', which it can be guessed harkens back to the supposed Greek knocking over of a bean container. The first example I can find is from The Stevens Point Journal, June 1908:
"Tawney, when he came to congress, wasn't welcomed within the big tent. He had to wait around on the outside. Then the blacksmith [Jim Tawney] got busy. He just walked off the reservation, taking enough insurgent Republicans with him to spill the beans for the big five."
Soon after that the phrase was used with the meaning of 'upset a previously stable situation by talking out of turn', which is close to how we use it today. That is cited in The Van Wert Daily Bulletin, October 1911:
"Finally Secretary Fisher, of the President's cabinet, who had just returned from a trip to Alaska, was called by Governor Stubbs to the front, and proceeded, as one writer says, to 'spill the beans'."
We have 'spill', meaning 'to divulge', but why beans? Well, it could have been almost anything. In fact, there are several 'spill the' variations - 'spill the soup', 'spill your guts', or more simply, 'spill it', or just 'spill'.

Good morning from rainy New England today. We've been getting more than our share of rain this season. If it keeps up, I may even have a lawn this summer. Keeps the pollen down, too, and it's a lot easier to sleep when it's this cool outside.
Other than that couple of feet of girder rail down by the carfloat terminal, I haven't laid track for a couple of years. That's about to change. The last section of pink foam on Phase 2 of my layout is to become a tannery, so I'll be finalizing the track plan and buying the turnouts. With retirement approaching and with it the inevitable downsizing, I'm starting to regard this as temporary. I can't really build the scene the way I want it, given the space restrictions, so I will simplify the track plan and just enjoy doing the scenery and structures for now.

Well, this is how we vote in the monastery. White Marble = Approve; Black Marble = Opposed. We have a special wooden voting machine for this purpose. The bottom drawer holds the supply of marbles, the upper drawer holds the votes that were cast through a funnel shaped cup on top of the box.
Before the vote the Abbot removes the top drawer and turns it over to show that it is empty, he then places it in the box, and opens the bottom drawer with the supply of marbles. Only voting capitulars are in the room. While people file up to vote the Abbot and the Secretary of the chapter count the house and agree on the number of people present. After the vote (the Abbot does not vote) the drawer is opened and the Abbot and the Secretary count the marbles. Obviously there may not be more marbles than people voting (Sorry Chicago!) and the results are announced.
When we vote on people, paper ballots are used and the winner must take 2/3s of the vote, or the vote is held again. On the third ballot, the one with the most votes is elected even if it is not a simple majority.

Morning All,
Currently it is 55 with an expected high of 85 with mostly sunny, breezy conditions this afternoon. Had some rain yesterday which cooled things down a bit, and we are now back to normal spring, early summer temps.
Closing shift today, but have an 11:00 AM meeting, which will replace the 9:00 PM meeting, so I may not get home that late.

(grumble, grumble, grumble.....) Nasty rotten, yucky, damp, dark, chilly, icky, rainy day out there again... this is happening because I have a long list of outside things that should have gotten done around here outside before Memorial Day and I wasn't able to get to them!
Guess I will get doing some of the long list of indoor things needing to get done instead... Sure wish I didn't have to turn on the lights to see my way around the house though.
Well, well, well... My son just called as I was typing this to thank me for the Christmas gift I gave him a couple years back. It seemks that around 2:30Am there was a crash and a lot of sparks them complete darkness in the area where he lives. He lives just outside the Village of Waterloo, NY and a tree that is on his neighbors property right next to my son's pproperty decided to come down. This is a tree I have mentioned again and again as being a "Widow Maker" and one that needed to get taken down. It had a split trunk and one half of it grew sideways for about 80' and came out right above the utility wires at the road. With all the rain we have had, she finally came loose and came down taking everything in its path with it. My DIL called 911 and a while later the county arrived with all kinds of trucks and equipment. They cut up and removed the entire tree and a large Locust tree in the path of the one that came down. He called to let me know the 4000w generator I gave him for Christmas back then worked beautifully and he was able to keep the sump and a few other things going until they finally got the power back on this morning.
I feel less grumpy now!
Later!
Vacuumed upstairs today. The estimate is back for the flooring but I have not seen it yet, but my wallet is already hurting. Tomorrow I go back to work and with the heat and humidity it will be busy, busy, busy.
This morning when I came downstairs there was water pouring off the roof. I ran outside and our pool solar had sprung a major leak. I isolated it and it quit. Solar guy is coming out next week to look at it.
Today my sitting HO people arrived for my lighted FOM cars. I had to cut off 76 pairs of legs since the Con-Cor passenger seats had almost no leg room. Putting the light boards back in was a little tricky but it got done and all cars tested good. There is something just wrong about this picture

Been working on a couple of old computers today. Both are 1982 vintage Apple IIe's. One is a 128k system and the other is 64k. I'm getting a RAM expander to bring the 64k system up to 128k. I've already put Disc II drive controllers in each so they can both use standard 5.25" drives. One had a DuoDisk system which I hate. I was happy to remove the controller for that. Here's a couple of photos of the two dinosaurs.
Other than that I haven't accomplished much today.
hello everybody a cup of strong tea for me please today has been rather stressful with the washing machine looking like it had sprung a leak which was rather worrying the fortunately it was just the seal round the drum had come lose so i spent about 2 hours trying to get the (Insert curse word of choice here) thing back on i must have made so much noise that the chap that lives next door came around to see if every thing was OK but every thing is now as my best friend says "Ship shape and Bristol fashion" the machine will run a load of washing through with out soaking the floor.

Janie I'll have a Hot Fudge Sunday and a cup of decaf to...... Whoa! What's this? An Apple IIe??? Haven't seen one of those in a good many years! Hey it even has two drives... The 128k machine. Yes! I was the first teacher at Geneva Middle School to have one of those in my classroom. Made a for a real nasty argument at the next Faculty Meeting where the principal had to try to explain why a lowly Music Teacher got a 128k machine when all the math, and English teachers (you know the "real" teachers) only had 64k ones!
The principle finally got a bit irritated and told them it was because I asked for one and that was what he had! It was a cast off from an old computer lab at the high school and he was only able to get one for his building (the others went to the elementary schools) and besides he didn't want the Math and English departments mad at each other! Some of those teachers didn't speak to me all year (which I actually enjoyed, not having to put up with their arrogance...).
I got a bunch of old odds and ends I have been storing sorted and ready to put out for the big neighborhood garage/lawn/porch/driveway/etc. sale in a couple weeks. Still have 10 or so more boxes to go and then the collectable plates down cellar.... My mom was absolutely convinced they were worth a fortune! Might get 50¢ for a few of them I think.
The tree service didn't show up today so he should be along tomorrow morning. I was hoping he would get here today so I wouldn't have to get up at a normal time tomorrow (ergo lose 3 hours of sleep...).
Catch up with you in a bit...
